That was a tough workout. Excellent demonstration of skill and know-how.

It certainly was a tough work out. You'd think by now I would be used to it, but it's not about how long you've done it's about keeping physically fit that makes hand tool woodworking enjoyable.

Sometimes I'll pencil the board to show if I've coveredthe whole board with the smoother.

It's a good idea and it's something I don't do anymore as I ddon't need to. However, sometimes I find helpful when flattening my waterstones.

Does burnishing the final surface impair the finish (paint, oil, lacquer) on the surface?

Burnishing the surface can sometimes affect how well finishes like paint, oil, or lacquer work, but it depends on a few things. When you burnish, you're smoothing and compressing the wood, which can make it harder for some finishes to soak in properly, especially oils. For paint or lacquer, it might not stick as well if the surface is too polished.
If you’re burnishing, it’s a good idea to test your finish on a small spot first. If it feels like the finish isn’t going on well, a light sand with fine-grit sandpaper can help. It’s all about finding the right balance for your project.
