The Lexus IS500 is the sole option in its segment that still brings a glorious naturally aspirated V8. Definitely earning it the title of best sounding compact luxury sedan. But how does it compare to cars like the Audi S4, BMW 3-Series and more in terms of daily driving and performance? I spent a week with a new IS500 F-Sport to find out! Enjoy this vlog!

Thinking about trading my '18 Audi S5 Sportback for one of these. Drove the IS500 a couple of days ago. Definitely different going from a turbocharged V6 to a NA V8. Really liked it, but just a different power delivery. The biggest reason, truth be told, that I'm seriously looking at Lexus is because of reliability. The Audi is currently in the shop waiting on a new engine. 40,000 miles. Never tracked, never driven overly aggressive. I Thank God I had an extended warranty. Audi is VERY proud of their engines. To the tune of $30K.
Should have used LiquiMoly
I did. Not so smart now, are you?@@juniormeyer27
That’s insane! I love the S5 SB, I never thought that engine would die so early. I bought a Stinger GT2 cause of the warranty and cheaper maintenance. I can’t actually see myself going to Lexus after owning German cause it’s just not on the same level. No HUD and not even an automatic trunk on the IS500…but if you’re in it for that long term reliability then I get it
it’s not about the reliability of just the brand, think about just the general reliability of a turbo charged engine vs a higher cylinder NA engine. The NA engine is always gonna outlast the turbo charged, way less strain on the engine and no power taken away from it. Hope you switched over
The styling is probably some of the best that Lexus has ever done on a sedan. The 5.0 is a great motor maybe a little outclassed by its other N/A V8 competitors but it came out in 2008 originally now with a few improvements, but it can definitely hold its own.
There aren't really any NA V-8 competitors anymore. If you want to include random cars that have NA V-8 engines, well, this 472-horsepower engine makes more power than a Camaro SS and the S550 Mustang GT (excluding the Bullitt or Mach 1) and though a 392 Charger has more power, it's also several hundred pounds heavier. If you compare it to other compact luxury performance sedans in the same price bracket, it makes the most power. The RWD setup really limits this car 0-60, but some better tires will help out.
@@ARentz07I thought this had 402HP
@@marcuspage2026 pretty sure its like 474 or something
I bet this V-8 is the most reliable.
That blue really pops. Also, $65,000 for a quality luxury brand like Lexus with that naturally aspirated v8...Definitely worth it.
Curious, why does natural aspiration matter?
Bought a ‘23 IS500 in May. It replaced a’14 F10 M5. It’s taken a bit to adjust to the difference between the two. I’m finding what a couple other posts here said about how much better this NA V8 drives at high RPM to be 100% true. I don’t miss the M5 and off track, I think this 500 is even more fun than the BMW.
Is this faster than your bmw on the track?
@@theanimerapper6351 Not a snowball’s chance. The M5 was built to crush tracks. This 500 is a sporty GT car not at all equipped for track work.
@@bhongtasticso what makes it more fun?
@@jameshumphrey3425Some cars are more fun to drive slow than fast if that makes sense
@jameshumphrey3425 that NA engine is something you have to experience. Its the perfect daily driver since under 2500rpm its like a regular comfortable sedan and at higher rpm you get that power and beautiful sound.
Can't wait to get mine in ultrasonic blue and red interior! 4-6 weeks left!
Oooh that’ll be a cool color combo
You won't regret it. It's fun af in sport+ manual
Congratulations!
Mine is at the processing center right now same ultrasonic blue red interior 💪🏾
I debated this Color but I think I am going to with infrared and black interior
Some people rag on this car for being too ‘soft’ and lazy but the reality is that how the car feels depends on how fast and aggressively you’re driving it: The faster and more aggressive, the quicker the shifts, the stiffer the suspension, the heavier the steering wheel feels. It feels soft at street speeds because the ECU ‘knows’ you’re not racing it. To bring out the “beast” in this car you would have to work for it and it definitely doesn’t fail to deliver.
Exactly agreed, and tbh I only see this as a pro since you get "some" more MPG
Nice review, thank you SO MUCH for highlighting the need to let the engine and transmission warm up. I think too many uninformed reviewers hopped into the car, took off, and were disappointed by the response. It takes roughly 10 minutes to warm up effectively, use the remote start, get your stuff ready, and you'll be able to hit the ground running. I drive mine in manual & Sport S+ about 98% of the time and I rarely shift before 5000K RPMS. Gas mileage is terrible, but that'll guarantee a quick response from the transmission, anything below and you will see what you saw. Additionally, thank you for recognizing Lexus' mission behind the IS 500. It was not meant to be a track weapon, but instead a daily commuter during the week and a mountain sweeper on the weekends. Other than the build quality and longevity, the car is not the best in its class. However...it does everything quite +well+ and it should be seriously considered because of it. NOTE: The wheel spin is no issue at all with the Pilot Sport 4S tires. Hooks up every. single. time. 😈 Thanks for posting!
I’ll be test driving is 500 in couple weeks I’ll let ya know it drives
@@joemilazzo7830 It’ll be awesome, let me know!
If you just drive the car hard, the transmission will shift a lot faster. It's not really happy in manual mode below 4000 RPM. At high RPM it'll do whatever you want. Just something to note if anyone wanting this car is put off by the transmission. If you upshift before you hit about 5000 RPM it'll probably feel jerky. But, above that, they are nice and snappy shifts.
Some people say it's best to leave it in automatic mode, but personally, if I am on a back road, I am going manual mode.
Also critical to understand that the transmission requires optimal operating temp. before it's programming allows it to shift the way it should. Many reviews are not aware of this.
it's a crime Lexus did away with manual transmissions, we're stuck with autotragics now with issues like this ^
I’m definitely getting one after Easter. The reviews are so compelling. Thank you guys
The IS500 is beautiful. To me nothing beats a naturally aspirated Lexus V8. I had an LS460 and the buttery smooth, linear power band is beautiful. Add in the low maintenance costs and reliability with Lexus and tremendous resale value and this car is a winner.
That is really sad about throwing the egg at the car. Juvenile act, hopefully you washed it quick.
Looks like an egg. Sounds like an egg. Smells like an egg. It's a potato...
@@noob.168why the hate ?
Insane Lexus !! 💙💙
When I worked at Lexus many years ago, I drove a IS 350 F-Sport and put it in Sport+, it was surprisingly fun. I would imagine this car being more fun with the added power. Btw, nothing wrong with a nice sound system with a cd player 🙂
Do only some IS350 models have sport+? I don't have that on mine just sport mode
I can't wait for the new ISF!!! Hopefully it happens!
3:31 those are BBS wheels.
Mine is the same colour, it looks so amazing in person, it's such a phenomenal car, I wish I had 2
One of the most accurate reviews of the IS500. I'm completely happy with mine. I find reasons to drive this car. The V8 was the selling point for me. I was happy with my Stinger but as soon as Lexus announced the 2UR-GSE I started making calls. I fully understood this wasn't a track car
I love my IS500💖
How does the IS compare to the stinger? I currently have a G70 and have been considering the IS
@@jaker6037 the Stinger was a very good choice. I would get another. I tried to get my wife one but she opt'd for a Red Sport
great video, love the colour
damn, sick ride!
Some small thing car reviewers need to understand is that a cd will always sound beter then some compresed streamed audio.
This and a corvette man I tell you. I wish I could have both. Currently only have a IS 200t. I def want the 500
Good looking style and the roar of a V8 sound!
I'm picking my my 2024 IS 500 in Blue Vector on December 27 2023. I was initially going to get this in Cloudburst Grey but then saw a Blue Vector in the showroom and it looked stunning. I am worried that it's too loud of a colour. For those who are interested I've owned a 2012 BMW 335 and then later a 2015 BMW 435. I'm not an aggressive driver or do I track my cars. The BMW's are great cars but regardless on how much I pamper them there seems to always be a reason they need expensive servicing. My 2006 RX400H which I've owned for over 15 years has required less maintenance and have cost me less than both those BMW's which I've owned for roughly 6 years each (and both had extended warranty). I'm sure I'll have so much fun with the IS and enjoy excellent reliability.
Did you get the Lexus? I am thinking M340i or is500
@@echoalpha9157 I ended up picking up a 2024 IS 500 in Vector Blue. Comparing it to my 2015 435 Xdrive I'd have the say the IS is way more comfortable to drive as a daily driver. I think the acceleration won't be as fast as an M340i but I don't really care about that as I'm not racing it. The IS 500 is definitely fast enough for any of my application when merging or passing vehicles. I will say that I felt a bit more confident in my 4 series in crappy winter driving conditions here in Canada as it was all wheel drive. I also bought the Michelin X-Ice 3 winter tires for the IS so I'm comparing apples to apples. Regarding technology, I use Apply Car Play so it's really good. My wife and kids say they prefer the IS500 over the 4 series. I think it's because it's simply a more comfortable ride. My biggest complaints so far: 1) the side mirrors are manual so going through car washes I have to physically come out to turn them in. 2) the Mark Levinson speaker system sounds OK but nothing crazy. Mind you I haven't played with the settings. Regardless, if you want better sound in the BMW or Lexus you gotta get after market. 3) I wish there was a sunglass holder 4) This could simply be a RWD thing but I feel the rear wants to get squirrely when accelerating hard on wet/slippery surfaces. I didn't feel that in the BMW AWD so I felt more confident on turns.
Otherwise, really great car and I'm sure in the long run the cost of maintenance will be less than what I paid for the BMW 4 series.
@@user-nd5yr9ol5i thank you for answering - very informative. How did you decide on a colour for the exterior? Hahahaha I am trying to order one by the end of this weekend. Also, is the new red interior too aggressive? I am looking at the resale value of what colour combinations will help retain a good price / value
@@echoalpha9157 Yeah colour is simply personal preference. Previously, I've always gone black on black with all my sporty cars. I also have a business SUV (GX460 black edition) so I wanted to go with a more fun and visually pleasing color. Personally, I'm not fond of the red interior as it looks too lipstick like to me. If the red interior was more darker I would have liked it. Initially, I was thinking of the following: 1) going red exterior with black interior 2) ultrasonic blue w/ black interior 3) play it safe with cloudburst grey with black interior. Then I saw the Vector Blue in the showroom and I was sold. However, I still had some reservations because it is a loud colour. Then I told myself "who gives a sh!t, this is my fun car". After owning it for 6 months I don't regret the colour as it is a head turner and I get lots of compliments saying they love the colour.
@@user-nd5yr9ol5i wow this is great intel. I appreciate the feedback. I will sleep on this decision on colours because I am looking to at least have this car for over 15+ years. I think the combination of colours you have contemplated is what I have listed as my topic picks including the white. Any feedback on the incognito vs iridium vs blue as well?
Thank you for making this Eddie!!!! I would’ve lost it if I got egged for a car that’s not even loud and I have that same Grecian water that’s my baby. …….and you do have to let the transmission warm up so I do get the frustration.
This is absolutely a great looking sports sedan, it’s a shame about the dynamics. I drove this car recently and was super underwhelmed with just about everything dynamically. Steering was typical Toyota/Lexus so light and no feel, suspension felt firm and yet underdamped, transmission was super slow in its manual shifts, and engine was not nearly as exciting as you’d hope for a relatively high HP naturally aspirated V8. That being said, the car is desirable because it’s beautiful to look at and fit/finish is as good as it gets. Just wish the driving experience lived up to the rest of the car 😞
Picking up mine today bro can’t wait
Congratulations!!!!! 🎉
@@JloveLamar thanks bro
Woot! Woot! Hope to see pics posted somewhere! Would love to hear your initial driving impressions after the first start up. You never forget the first time. 😍😜
Congrats. How are you liking it so far?
I’m in love w it. I’m hoping to get my drone this weekend and go shoot some video. It’s an amazing car, Ik some people have complains about the transmission but it feels really good. I don’t feel any lag from the transmission.
That color is love and life 😍 🔥 i own a 2023 IS350 F Sport RWD in Ultrasonic Blue Mica 2.0 with white interior! Absolutely stunning! Of course IS500 is better but im happy with mine for now 😊
My cousin has one coming in with Iridium for the exterior color and circuit red for the interior. Great car but sadly it is the last of its kind.
That’s for sure man💯💯
Eddie, those ARE the BBS wheels on your car. They are the same ones as you get on the Launch Edition. 😄
Also, re: the exhaust volume. It's basically the very same setup you get on an RC F or GS F. Neither of those were very loud. What can we say - it is a bit of a parts-bin car! But I am so glad this exists.
Oh thanks for the correction!
Being an older guy with an OG mindset. The person who threw that egg would have had a regrettable moment.
What a great car interior and exterior and engine and transmission. A great sedan may be best in the world period. May be the sliders for AC were bad but I am nitpicking. It would have been the car when sedans ruled the world. Now it is a curiosity but still perfection.
Great video bro 🔥🔥 and did anyone else see that random lady squatting at 33:08 lol
Wowww! A cd player!
I want this just for the CD player
Traded in my ‘23 zl1 for one last week. Atomic silver. Loving it so far.
Wow, how do you feel about the move down in power? Both the Camaro and Is500 are great cars.
@@Barbwire710 definitely miss the excessive power that the zl1 had at times but there was often times where I felt like I couldn’t completely enjoy all the power (never tracked it or any cars but track motorcycles pretty often). The transmission (10spd) in the zl1 was definitely a lot smoother. That being said, the is500 is much more well rounded in comparison to the zl1 (space for my 5 yo son, capable of spirited driving, better interior than the zl1, etc). I’ll probably end up buying something else to add to the stable soon (hopefully a gtr or a 911)
Pick up a used RCF.
Gut it out (keep both seats) upgrade the suspension light performance mods and put a roll cage. Now that will be a nice race car to compliment your Is 500.
Only thing I disliked was how quiet it is compared to the LC500 stock. But I forgot you can always get new exhausts. Would get a full cat back GTHaus if I end up getting one. Brings out the v8 to life
It's really unfortunate that Lexus doesn't go the extra mile to put a better transmission in the car. It's such a good motor, but a motor's capabilities are only as good as the rest of the drivetrain can put it down to the wheels.
Car is a beast
glad to see that #EggGang makes makes a cameo!
Eddie- Did that egg come off the paint ok? That can do serious damage to clearcoat 😳
The reliability factor has me leaning towards the IS500
over the M340i as well as maintenance costs. More money spent on gas obviously but would probably save money in the long run
Did you get the lexus or BMW?
I'm definitely getting one I just hope they offer a new color option for 2024
Let us know what color you end up with.
@edwardcarballo5843 still waiting for a new color option 🙄
get em while they last!! I'm keeping mine forever heheh
hope it will be next step after my GS460,dont see alternatives except 2UR-GSE (LC500/IS500)
my question would be would you rather get a mustang gt or the is500. Before you answer what car would you rather cruze around in and also road trip.
In living with the white interior… do you have to watch what you wear? Jeans n such? Do your clothes bleed color on the seats?
Car looks really good. The only problem with sedans at this price point is the CT4 V blackwing
Yes and the Caddy comes with a stick
And caddy low reliability 😂
CDs use lasers so they are kind of better then alot of things in some ways like audio quality
How’s the room ? I have an es might upgrade
Coming from a 22 is350 i hate the throttle lag being a v8 does this have better off the line performance /less lag worth the extra price ?
This is a Fsport performance which is in between F sport and F
Does this car 2022-23 model in F Sport have that stupid engine auto shut-off feature when you are driving light to light? Only thing that is preventing me from buying the 2023 F sport is500 is I can't get a straight answer on if it does have the shut off "feature" and if I can disable it.
No auto stop feature
I was between this and a Camaro SS1le for a daily. Totally different cars but I wanted a V8. I ended up with the 1LE, really happy with the Camaro but I still keep looking at these. I think I might have to own both soon. Camaro is really fun to drive but the interior space sucks, but all that power and torque plus the exhaust pops make us for the limited space😂. I think the IS500 is both fun and roomy.
Can't speak for you but the SS 1LE would also be the choice of the two.
I have a 2023 Is 500.
Raced a SS and it was dead even both times.
Lexus cost more but you will notice the quality.
Torque in the SS is better fior daily driving.
Both are great choices.
No need for buyers remorse.
Such a bad ass car
this car is the best daily driving v8 rwd sports sedan in the world.
Your opinion. What is the best sounding four cylinder cold start.
I’d guess the Giulia from what I’ve heard from people I trust. The Giulia Veloce for instance 4-cyl 280 HP. 8 spd tranny. It’s a terrific engine. Alfa Romeo nails engines and chassis dynamics.
Those ARE the BBS wheels.
Thanks for the video Eddie. Sorry about the egg. Just ignore them. Jealous/enviously unemployeds

I'm only 3 minutes in but could you do an exterior walk around?
I dislike the cd player also, but the reason Lexus puts it in the car is for optimal sound quality for the Mark Levinson, CDs are lossless.
For the old timers as well but it’s going to be excellent quality of sound like you said.
The only issue I had with IS earlier models is that if you take a road trip, the place where you want to lean your right knee is all hard, so it hurts after a while. Not an issue for anything less than a few hours, but after 12 hours, it can become an issue. Looks like they added some padding for that exact reason.
Are you talking about the hump from the transfer case. If so that's only on awd models. Rwd models don't have the hump. This Is500 is rwd.
There is a pad there in the 2021+ IS models.
@ARentz07
The hump I was talking about is on all the awd Is and Rc cars my 2016 Is350 awd had the hump,my 2018 Rc350 rwd does not have the hump.
@arthurl.9985 OK well an IS500 doesn't have the hump. It's RWD.
It has a pad where my right knee goes. I think they added the pad for 2021.
I think I'd rather have the 350 but this is still basically a dream car to me. Reliability, luxury, power all in one
Luxury with no HUD and no automatic trunk lol?
I didn’t know those two things defined what a luxury car is lol. Plus, only the C-class and the G70 are the only ones on the top of my head that have a power trunk in this segment. If you’re going to rag on this car for that, rag on the others. The HUD is a miss but not really much of a deal breaker. Unless, you absolutely cannot have it
@@mrscottmescudi10 I don't really like HUDs, but I do like ventilated seats, which are not available on some competitors.
@@2isadventures You can get a 3-series with a power trunk as well.
@@ARentz07 I knew the earlier model years of the current G20 3 series had it, but I thought they removed it from their later model years. Thanks for the correction lol
Wait, you weren't clear, is that an IS500? 😊
The car looks good bro but that exhaust is pitiful 😂😂😂 still nice none the less for a Lexus 💯
Correct me if I'm wrong but you are wrong and the Lexus IS 500 F sport has an active exhaust.
It's a nice car to go out with a bang on. I just wish Lexus or Toyota at that matter put more power in their cars. They look fast, but get outperformed by quite a bit of other options.
your instantly sacrificing reliability once you start turbocharging small engines, which is how the competitors reach those better numbers on paper. Audi, cadillac, BMW, hence why they’re so damn unreliable. Toyota/lexus knows this
luckily lexus/toyota have been working on a TTV8 Hybrid with 900+ HP for a couple years now, should be announced sometime soon
Is that rear turn signal incandescent??
Yes
Equivalent GM would be CT5 if they put naturally aspirated Camaro/Corvette 6.2 liter in it.this is the type of vehicle GM doesn’t have to guts to make unless it is a full fledged blackwing too expensive ride.
Hate the pop up monitor/navigation screen in the middle. Looks like it's sticking up or glued there. Same reason I got rid of my GLC 55 AMG.
Is the last Lexus v8 2024 or
1:10 be careful with playing with that feature too much. When it breaks, it’s over 3k dollars. Ask me how I know…

How is this comparable to an Audi S4 that has 349hp and the m340i that has 382hp when this has 472hp , first time I see someone looking down on the is500.
Because bmw makes 380 to the wheels
No power folding mirrors on the car is inexcusable.
No mats!
i like lexus/toyota but they been lackin on the interior design and features. new 2023 models are better but still
It's a 5liter v8 RWD IN A TINY CAR why are you complaining 😮
Not sure but a lot of the driving seemed to be filmed with your phone, I’m assuming one hand on the wheel one on the phone, if that was the case please invest in some kind of chest or head mount, it only takes one bad accident to ruin your life, it would suck for that to happen to you, keep up the good vids otherwise though, and please stay safe
Hmm might trade my BMW for this for that price?
I prefer the IS350. More chance to accelerate on the road and feels lighter.
I had an es350 with a similar engine to the IS350 (I think just detuned a bit and transversely mounted) before I got the IS500, I love my IS500 but one of my few complaints is that its just too fast for normal roads, if you try to make the engine sing your instantly doing loose you license speeds. The ES350 was perfect it was super satisfying to rev out and you weren't doing triple digits after going through a few gears. I live in Canada, and will park my IS500 all winter, I wish I could afford and AWD IS350 F sport as well and use that as my winter car.
@@85CEKRboo hoo😂
The IS500 feels more special to drive. I don't think it's too powerful for the street, either.
They need to stop using gloss black lol. It shows every spec of dust.

Not happy about the built-in spy cam...I mean dash-cam.
I love my dash cam. It is good peace of mind in case any other driver causes an accident involving me.
Lc sounds much better also transmission not shifting quickly I don’t think it’s worth 65 k 😏
come on lexus. a $65k car and no power folding mirror... and rear turning signal gotta be led....
Love the car, but the archaic infotainment is inexcusable for a vehicle they released the same year as their new one, Lexus Interface. Not sure why Lexus always has such issues with lagging behind every other manufacturer with infotainment updates- just comes across as cheap. It took until the last 2 years of the GX460 (2022-23) for them to finally update the Atari it had inside to this old generation infotainment the IS500 is using.
Newer is not always better. The old DCM is not annoying vs newer one with glitches and almost 95% of the latest bleeding edge Wireless charging in Cars are wonky and heat up your phone fast plus all the screens and shit is not good either finally the new Lexus interface sucks, toyota motor corp takes time is not a good trait but it helps in some reliability factor.
@@lostalx wireless AA/carplay and a fast, intuitive UI is what matters most IMO. sad to hear interface sucks- infotainment has always been their achilles heel. Having the prev gen infotainment in my '22 GX is fine because it at least aligns with the charm/age of the vehicle... but when I get in my '22 F250 with Sync4's great UI and wireless android it's a much more modern experience.
@sly9263 agree. I think the Android OS has a nice alternative, which is Motorola MA1, which enables wireless Android Auto. However, it is not a factory, so maybe be some UX changes.
rest assured, that Karma is coming back for those who threw eggs at your car. Amen & God Bless.

You are so wrong about thinking CT4 is anywhere as good as this.
You’re right, dynamically the Cadillac is in another universe. But as an overall car taking in practical considerations like build quality, reliability and resale the IS makes up some ground
