I used these pencils for years. While they got through me through and I managed to use them well for my style at the time, they were definitely a cheaper entry level pencil. Many of the colours had pigment issues with flecks of darker colours through the core, scratchy cores, not highly pigmented etc. Fortunately I've always worked with a very light hand so I had no issues layering and developing blends with colour tone changes. But having used what I'll call proper artist pencils (Polychromos and higher grade Derwent pencils) I will never go back to using the Derwent Studio pencils. It's like chalk and cheese for me. Plus due to the hard core/lack of pigmentation I found I always had issues with my hand and elbow after using them for long periods. Granted I never used them on sanded paper, but certainly not a pencil I'd recommend for anyone who has issues with their hands.

I have just purchased 11 of these loose pencils and I do suffer with my hands and trying to find out if its arthritis or carpel tunnel. I don't find these easy to layer at all though 😣

I just have to say, I bought the Derwent studio about 20 years ago. I absolutely loved them. I bought 12 count. It took me me a while to finally buy the 24 range simply because I bought so many other Derwent lines and other brands. The 24 count was a recent purchase. I swatched them....noticed they weren't the same. Swatched the older studio ones for comparison. Guess what? I was right! The older ones actually had a very pigmented formula. The new ones feel more like a student quality than for professionals. I truly believe that the formula changed...who knows how long ago. That is why I believe everyone is so disappointed about without realizing it. They actually used to be amazing, the older formula. If you can get your hands on a much older set and compare them, I think it would make for a very good review and revelation.

I work on pastelmat and the derwent studio and artists are vibrant on that surface, though muted on paper. They are great for initial layers on pastelmat to fill up the tooth if you don't like grainy look and don't want to use solvents. The black studio on, pastelmat is dark and is great for doing details like black whiskers.

Thanks for the review Harry, it’s good to come back to an art supply after a while when you’ve got more experience. I have these and really enjoy using them as detail pencils and sometimes on full pieces. If you’re prepared to be patient and layer then I find they work well on fairly smooth surfaces but a little tooth really helps, especially if you want to mix the colours on the paper. The colour range is beautiful, particularly the greens, which is what I’d expect from Derwent. I don’t find they have worn down quickly either. Thanks again for the review, looking forward to the next :)

Harry- I had the same issue with the Derwent Watercolour Pencils. They were all over. Partly it is the slots are too large but also because the bars weren't installed properly. You can correct that by either adding a strip of craft foam on the back of the bar or you can move the metal tabs down just a bit by very carefully adjusting them down by just loosening them or you might actually have to redrill the holes for them and re-install the metal holder. Just moving the bar down into the box would keep the pencils from moving around. I agree Derwent needs to put better slots in.

Who would give you a thumbs down for this professionally filmed review? Crazy.
I had no idea these were the same core material to the Artist pencil. Paper is so key for pencils. I’m only just starting to realise that. Great review Harry. Hope you are well.

Thank you so much Sue, you are an amazing friend and supporter of this channel I can’t tell you how much that means to. I am so fortunate to have so many wonderful subscribers to the channel, in fact I hate the word subscribers, I think in my case I prefer Friends.
As for the thumbs down, we all get that no matter how good the video is, but if you look through my videos I get one thumbs down in almost every video and sometimes more, especially in the earlier videos and quite rightly so, the quality was never there. But I am almost 80% positive who that one person is that does it in almost every video. I mean even if I was 100% positive on who it was I would never reveal the information because even that person has their own option and is rightly entitled to it.
I personally think that UA-cam should have a system whereby when we leave a thumbs down on a video, a reason has to be given but there would be an option of anonymity. I didn’t realise the importance of thumbs up or down until very recently and so if someone thinks I am failing at something or missing something out, I would genuinely love to know so that I can try and rectify the mistakes I’m making. I just think a system like that is more beneficial to the creator. I never shy away from constructive criticism in fact I would say my video quality, content and audio has improved via critique from viewers of the channel, I think it is vital to growth and improvement.
Any way rant over 😂🤣😂🤣 thank you so much sue for your wonderful comment and support

Thanks to your reviews I bought a couple of ProColour, Coloursoft, Artists and Lightfast pencils open stock to try them out. So excited!
I also did a lot of research online to compare prices and I must say that I'm a bit bummed out that the the 48 Set and some full range sets only come in the wooden box and no tin option.
I just have no use for te wooden boxes, they are too clunky, heavy and expensive, so I wish there was a cheaper way of getting full sets of the Lightfast and Artists for example, without wasting money on the box I'll throw away.
Faber Castell wooden boxes are the only wooden boxes I'd want because they have super story trays, while imho the Derwent boxes are one of the ugliest and most impractical looking wooden box sets out there.
Thats a big issue for me, because I dont want to miss out on the nicest colors just because 72 is the biggest available tin set. Also the 48 sets have a way nicer color selection, but sadly make no sense to buy money wise.

Derwent have a wide range of different pencils you could look at, it depends what type of pencil you are after.
Derwents Lightfast pencil range is arguably the best pencil about at the minute. It would be an argument between them and Caran D’Ache Luminance or the Faber Castel Polychromos. bit.ly/2ItMPBM this is a link to my review of the Lightfast
Then there is the Derwent ColourSoft Derwents version of Prismacolor. Not quite as soft as Prisma bit.ly/2iQWQzD
Derwent Studio and Artist Pencils as mentioned in this review are the same ingredients but very different pencils. This link is to my review of the Artist bit.ly/1QrH3kO
The Derwent ProColour is smack bang in between the softness of the ColourSoft and the hardness of the Artist. bit.ly/2scCOBL this is my review of the ProColour
The Derwent Drawing Pencil is only a 24 set but the colours in the set are so unique and beautiful it is a set almost every pencil artist should have. bit.ly/2idzHZa
I think that is it for the so called wax or oil based pencils in the Derwent arsenal. They do of course have a lot more Water Soluble pencils and Pastel Pencils. I hope this has helped you out a bit

@@TheArtGearGuide hi, i was wondering what the derwent academy range is? Is it a student grade?

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  3 роки тому

      Hi Rathna
It’s been a long time since I used the Academy range from Derwent and I am going to say that a few things have changed for the better regarding ingredients etc, so I don’t really want to say one way or the other, however what I will do is order a set right now and add them to my review stock. I think it is an excellent idea to review these and have them among my catalog of reviews because I know quite a lot of people are interested in them.
I am so sorry that I couldn’t give you a helpful answer right away but as soon as I have completed the review I will let you know.
I don’t like just answering questions if I am not 100% sure on the correct response, I’d rather say I don’t know and investigate rather than waffle and potentially cause someone to spend hard earned money on a product that isn’t right for them based on my reply.
Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful but it is on the way I promise

I have some of these and the pigments are not that strong on paper unless you put down heavy layers. Overall they are quite decent but not worth the money compared to the coloursoft which is a much bigger bang for your buck. I use Faber Castell for detail work overall they are, better value, last longer, never break, and have stronger pigments. I like Derwent but these are not great pencils IMO.

Thank you for another amazing review!
I'm just questioning: by saying "the same ingredients" you mean also "the same proportions"? I ask this because I feel a bit of difference between the studio and the artist ... but maybe it's me .. quite confused XD

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 роки тому +3

I completely understand your question my friend and you are absolutely right, both pencils do feel different when using. The ingredients and proportions are exactly the same, but the difference is the size of the core.
Because the Studio has a much thinner core than the Artist is feels almost softer than the artist when being used. Even when I asked Derwent about this and the lady I contact with went away to ask someone in the factory making the pencils, the first thing she said was that the ingredients are exactly the same but they do feel like different pencils because of the core size difference.
I completely understand your confusion and I am so happy you asked the question. That is the purpose of me and the channel, to help as much as I can when it comes to certain concerns or inquiries about a product. And if I am ever asked a question I don’t know the answer to, I am in a unique position to ask the companies directly in order to help you. Thank you so much for your question.

@@TheArtGearGuide hey there, I wanted to ask you a quick question. I have always, ever since I was a small child loved colored pencils and preferred them as a medium when creating/drawing. Of course, this was only ever a passing thought that would tumble in, and then right back out, of my head on the rare occasions I would actually sit down to draw. Well, it was, until recently when I have gotten back,in a major way, into mainly watercolor and copics, but also colored pencils. I absolutely LOVE my Caran D’ache Pablos especially when paired with the Supracolors, but I’ve really been thinking recently about springing for a complete set of one of the big three, Polychromos, Luminance, or Lightfast OR a complete set of Caran D’ache Museum Aquarelle’s, seeing as how watercolor really has been my main focus and I thought the museum aquarelles would be a fun way to incorporate colored pencils with my new found hobby of watercolor. I stumbled upon this video while looking for a review of the Derwent Artist 120 set and mistakenly clicked on this instead of the review I was looking for. Anyway, that’s all, debatably, extraneous information, what I really wanted to ask you was, would I be throwing money away by springing for a set of either the Polychromos, Luminance, or Derwent Lightfast? Are they really that much better than the Pablos? Are the Museum Aquarelles really that much better than the Supracolors? Out of the 4 which makes the most sense to you? I know these are all highly personal, subjective questions but I really respect your opinion and kinda just need a nudge I’m the right direction or I’ll be stuck here deciding forever lol, I’m sure you’ve been in the same place, stuck between a rock and a concrete wall that you poured just right on the other side of that rock right before you slipped in between the two hahahahah. Anyway, I know this short question has turned into a Youtune Comment’s section edition of the Odyssey so I’ll stop but definitely be looking forward to hearing what you have to say. Thumbs up and many thanks for your videos and your channel, you are a consistent voice of reason and entertainment and if I was being honest, I’d have to say that even though we’ve never met, I probably consider you one of my good friends the amount I hear from you every week, I mean shoot, I feel like I watch your videos more than I talk with my friends in the real world sometimes these days hahah, the sad truth, anyway, I’m done for real now, thanks again and I’ll keep an eye out for your reply

I have no problem believing that the Studio and Artists share the same core formula, as the lightfastness of each Studio pencil corresponds to the Artists' one, as opposed to their other lines. However, the Artists' core is 4mm, not close to 6. My only issue with the Artists' is finding the right sharpener that won't damage the wood; I always get a compression ring at the base of the point, where is meets the barrel. Doesn't affect the pencil or further sharpening, but I dislike it. Same problem with the Lightfast and with Caran d'Ache Luminance. :(

Hay Margareta thank you so very much for sharing your experience with us, I know the folks from Derwent always check out my Derwent reviews and so I hope they see your feedback. It is important for companies to know where they are going wrong if they are. In my own personal experience, and I mean before I became a semi known reviewer, Derwent have always been incredibly helpful. However, it is so frustrating when Pencils are off centre as they can at times prove difficult to use no matter how much you sharpen. I am very sorry to hear about your experience but thank you ever so much for sharing it. Thank you so very much Margareta for your comment.

Derwent studio pencils have found them own special place on my art gear and i do like use them. The 24 set I bought from art shop for professional artists. The man who have work there many years told that I'ts very common for them to send reclamations about those pencils for replacements. Quality control issue..?

  • @rebeccawilliams2410

My local art shop has these on sale for £1 each so I chose 11 colours to get started because all my other pencils are water soluble (inktense, caran dàche and another more expensive one I can't think of) so I wanted to have a go at just pencils. I used mixed media paper but I found it quite hard to layer the colours. Which I thought was such a shame. I do light layers. But with being used to high intense pigment like inktense and my water colour pigment I feel like these aren't as vibrant as they promise.
I will have another go this evening.
Any advice would be great. Thanks for the video x

Just thought I drop you a mention after me sobbing all over my derwent artist pencils. I found I could actually get m to work brilliant for me on a pastelmat paper from claire fontaine. Should you ever get the same complaints on pencils as I did'bc companies do change sometimes; rather then throw m out, thank God I didn't,bc I was close to that, try the pastelmat paper, it worked wonders for me. I know that paper price is ridiculous; but then again,If it saves you from throwing out expensive pencils, I'd say its a win.
