  • Welcome to Colour and the city!
In this video, I review the Faber-Castell Black Edition 100 pencil set, and compare it to Prismacolor Premier pencils.
Since I live in Europe, Prismacolors are rather expensive here, at least compared to the US, so I have been looking for a more affordable alternative that still has the same creaminess and softness of Prismas. While there are differences between them, of course, I think I found one! The Faber-Castell Black Edition pencils.
At the time of writing, 15 March 2024, a set of 100 Black Edition pencils can be bought for 40,95 euro on the Dutch e-tailer Bol.com (www.bol.com/nl/nl/p/faber-cas....
A set of Prismacolor Premier 36 pencils costs 57,95 euro, on the same website (www.bol.com/nl/nl/p/prismacol....
These prices may vary, but this is what the situation is at the moment.
This makes the FC Black Edition pencils much more affordable. So I got them and decided to give them a try.
In this video, I review the following elements:
    - The packaging.
    - The pencils themselves.
    - Their colour range.
    - Sharpening.
    - Paper test on Johanna Basford, Mythographic, Rita German, Amazon and Melpomeni Chatzipanagiotou paper.
    - Blending.
If you are looking to add some soft core pencils to your collection that don’t break the bank, hope this video helps with your decision! Of course, what I share in this video are my thoughts, just one perspective, and with the prices from a particular geography. Things might look different where you live, so the decision is completely up to you.
Wishing you a wonderful colouring month!
    All the best,
    N.

    Why this channel?
When I was in secondary school, the subject I got consistently low grades in was art class.
I made it mean I was not good enough: I lacked talent and I'd better look for something else to do with my life because painting was not going to be it for me.
Decades later, after taking a completely different career path, I am giving myself the chance to learn art again. Colouring, drawing, painting, sketching and illustrating. I’m trying them all.
    0 expectations.
    100% fun.

I have both sets, and for me FC Black Edition are the closest to Prismas I've managed to find (in some aspects), though still not exactly the same. They feel almost the same when laying down on paper, work well with Amazon printed coloring books (many colored pencils have issues with their paper), and are opaque enough to be used on top of other media (e.g. alcohol markers or watercolor/derwent inktense). On the other hand, their pigment does not move after placing some layers the way prismas' does, so you cannot blend two colors together as easily, and I can put fewer layers on paper with FC Black (approximately 3-4 on smooth papers, though I'm fairly heavy-handed, I admit).
All in all, while they are not exactly like prismas, they are my no. 2 colored pencil set, and I highly recommend them for anyone using mixed media or people who prefer soft pencils but do not want (or can't afford) to buy prismas.

That is the thing about Prisma.. the way they spread and mix.. literally like butter. One of my favorite things to do with them is lay down some dark or mid tone color in shadow areas and spread it out over paper with the blender, white pencil, or even just a light color.. so fast and it just "auto blends". Nothing else I've ever found does it the same. The light colors are amazing highlights over other brands as well.. I keep a set of pastel colors in my Polychromos set just for this purpose. They go down smooth and opaque. I have a Prisma white in every set of pencils I own. I feel bad for the folks in Europe who have to pay so much for them... but I've tried every artist pencil currently made, along with dozens of budget brands, and there is nothing that matches them. FYI this 100 set of Black Edition is like $100 bucks in the US, so we have to pay way too much for other brands too.

@@waymire01 True that, for me (in Poland) FC Black are "budget prismas", as I can buy the 100 set for an equivalent of 45$, while for 150 prismas I need to pay like 250$ (and ~150$ for a set of 72), with importing from amazon US actually being the cheapest - though still not cheap - option, even with all the taxes and shipping fees.
In case they are similarly priced, I would strongly recommend prismas as well, unless their softness and waxiness is actually an issue for someone, or for unusual, vivid colors of FC Black, as they definitely neither layer, nor blend as good as prismas do. And to my regret I did not find any other brand that blends so well either.

I love Faber Castel and use every type of pencils they have, I have never bought dearer brands. As a cheaper brand I think that they are up there with the best. My Albrecht Durer Watercolour pencils are my most expensive, but I buy them open stock. The dusting and smudging you get with Prismacolor would drive me to madness as I am not huge on backgrounds. A friend of mine had Prismas and now she uses Black Edition and will never go back to Prismas. Glad you found them to be an alternative and are happy with them, enjoy. Happy Colouring.

My sister brought me a smaller set from Germany, I haven't tried them too much but they are very soft which is nice because I think they are supposed to be more of a school pencil compared to Prismas.

Hi Dee, yes, they’re definitely aimed at a younger or beginner audience. I wanted to give them a try because of their softness. Don’t think I can ever find two pencil brands that feel exactly alike though, I’m afraid. Which pencils do you find yourself using most?

I’ve been looking for something instead of the prismacolors. They are way too expensive in our neck of the woods indeed! I’ve been wondering about these FC Black Edition ones but need to order online, can’t test them anywhere that I know of (Belgium). So this review and particularly, the comparison was very welcome, thank you ❤

I've been on the hunt for cheaper Prismacolor creamy pencils too at a more reasonable price. I got my large set for free thankfully but need to buy some more single colors I use a lot. I know nothing is the same as Prismacolor but enjoy trying different pencils to find something closer. I keep eyeing these too so thanks so much for sharing your experience and thoughts on these. I heard so many lovely things about these but I'm still hesitant. I am holding off for a sale on them. Mythographic paper isnt great for.some pencils so that test made sense. Still lovely color laydown from your tests.

Je kan bij Amazon hele mooie mappen kopen om je potloden in op te bergen en neemt minder ruimte in dan een houten kist ook makkelijker mee te nemen

Could you please do a blending test on them too? I have several brands that go down nice, but don’t blend well. Thanks
