  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In this powerful talk, Thomas Lloyd talks about taking pride in owning his identity and the strength that stems from that ownership. He talks with admiration about a movement that learnt that changing a community is much easier and much less damaging than changing one’s own identity. In his journey he has learnt to walk in solidarity with not only those he identifies with but also other marginalized groups in society.
    Thomas Lloyd is a Senior in the SFS majoring in STIA: Science, Technology & International Affairs. For the last two years he has served as the President of GUPride, Georgetown’s LGBTQ Student group, one of the only such groups at a Catholic school in the country. As the group’s president, Thomas helped raise the profile of GUPride and its catholic-campus LGBTQ work to a national level, while refocusing the mission of the group on to questions of intersectionality. Thomas has also been an RA at Georgetown for two years, written a regular column for The Hoya, and coached debate for The Bronx High School of Science for four years (his alma matter).
    About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    Being homosexual(gay) is nothing more than being attracted to your own gender. People saying "Why are you so gay?", "That's so gay", "you walk so gay", "she is so gay" etc. are delusional. Men being flamboyant or/and feminine does not automatically mean they are homosexual. Same with women being manly and masculine. This is your typical stigma around homosexuality. People believe it's more than being attracted to your own gender.

      djroberts92 that might have been the case with those individuals you met, but that is not the case for the majority of individuals that identify as part of the LGBT community. So make sure you understand that before you generalize with your comments. I'm a gay men and has nothing to do with what female I have been around. So yes, I'm a gay men.

    This is why teaching autistic kids to act normal doesn't work. Being autistic and trying to act normal means constantly monitoring your tone of voice, how much eye contact you're making, what mannerisms you're doing, etc. And at the same time, you have to expend just as much effort monitoring the *other* person, to read those nonverbal cues you don't instinctively pick up. I'm all for teaching autistic kids useful skills, but those people who try to 'cure' an autistic kid just by training them to act normal are forcing their 4 or 3 or 2 year old into a closet just as binding as an effeminate gay guy trying to act straight.

      gtrmaster2000 Interesting. Please expand on your "slow manipulation theory."

    • @gtrmaster2000
      @gtrmaster2000 9 років тому +8

      Certainly. Throughout your entire life, the moment your senses adjust you are constantly absorbing information. At this current moment you're consciously and subconsciously absorbing information. Every choice you make is determined upon data already collected. In fact you are born with innate data which allows you to survive as an infant, or rather the need of existence. These would be instincts. Another instinct would be to procreate and the continuation of a species. That’s fine and dandy however, how do you know how to procreate? Fairly simply put, you actually don’t. Not until absorbed data takes place anyway. This absorption I argue with a few things one being data collected through smell, pheromones, designed to attract the attention of the opposite sex for procreation. Being attracted by smell is not the same as enjoying sex with either sex though, it’s simply a way for the bodies to notice one another. It’s what you do with this collected data that matters. Absorbed data naturally has variables, be it what you’re exposed to or not. For instance, if you are raised by a family with specific religious values, you tend to follow them due to exposure. This does not however mean you will explicitly follow what you're more exposed to. For instance, say I whole hard idly believed in something and I’ve believed this for 30+ years, yet my fellow peers all agree it is nonsense. Being exposed to this and the constant influx of contrary data, could potentially cause me to make the decision that this is nonsense, or it could even strengthen my beliefs depending on whichever other variable of data is collected. You can’t specifically choose things to expose to someone and have them make a choice based on that exposure every time though. There are far too many outside variables. I do believe though if you were to do an experiment on a child in a controlled environment, never exposed to males or females directly, I mean sound/sight/touch all senses, they would neither be straight nor gay, in fact I’d argue they would be attracted to a female based on innate data from birth, but that doesn’t mean they would like it. They wouldn’t know what they like, until the rest of the data was collected, touch/sight etc.
      Id continue but I feel that's already relatively long.

      gtrmaster2000 Influence due to environmental factors does not at all mean that a conscious decision was made. I agree that sexuality is a very complex mixture of both innate, biological tendencies paired with environment as with most behavior. However, would you say that someone chose to have post traumatic stress disorder, a bacterial infection, a dismembered limb, etc? No. These situations are all directly caused by environmental factors, but people did not choose those environments. Also, biological features play a far bigger role than what you are presuming. It is theorized that homosexual brains differ from heterosexual brains (content.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1815538,00.html). It is also theorized that heredity plays a role as well (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1691850/pdf/15539346.pdf). Overall, I agree that the environment likely plays a role in sexuality, but this does not correlate to choice, it does not mean biology is not a factor, and it does not mean that homosexuality is preventable at this point in time.

    • @gtrmaster2000
      @gtrmaster2000 9 років тому +3

      Kevin Demontbrun I never argued that people chose what environments were exposed to them... In fact I clearly stated that variables exist multiple times in the assessment. I thought I made that very clear. Of course I do believe heredity plays a role, I also mentioned that with innate genetics... Yes environment definitely has influence on choice. Does it force you to choose? No, but it certainly makes you think of the possibility and to deny that is in and of itself nonsensical.

We open our minds to new things especially in a world that is rapidly changing. We choose to learn, explore other things and areas.

I was bullied, because other kids knew I was different even before I did. I was smart, and fairly good at faking my pain. When I finally found out, in my twenties, that I have Aspergers, I felt so much relief. I felt like now...I don't have to hide. I don't have to put up a facade that takes all of my energy and happiness. Now I try to own my identity; to be who I am. The world may not like that I don't fit in it's box of normality, but I can never go back to how it was. Not when I'm finally me.

I cut my hair short because i was just convinced I thought thats how it worked. And I realized 1. Im not gay 2. Having short hair dosent make you gay 3. Dont let people tell you who you are. But most of all I learned my short hair shaped me to become who I wanted to be and I am a 13 year old straight girl and I have short hair and I love myself as a person and I will not be told different.

    Interesting to note that many people who are offended by homosexuality, seem to be under the impression that their individual morality is the gold standard of morality for all peoples, everywhere. The interesting part about this line of thinking is that the individual is outwardly attempting to define what is right and wrong for rest of the human inhabitants on this planet.
    The most important thing to take away from this, is the philosophical viewpoint known as "meta-ethical morality" which states that each individual defines their own view of right and wrong, good and bad.
    Using this logic, one can see clearly that when an individual exclaims that "being homosexual is bad" or "the LGBT community is in some way wrong," what they are really stating is that they have somehow created a wall inside of their mind with a "my way or the highway" attitude and expect most other individuals to have--or at least conform to--the same thought processes and belief systems.
    Think of morality and perception like this:
    Each individual lives inside an enclosed cubicle.
    Nobody can see outside, but each can make educated guesses about what its like.
    This is perception.
    Nobody can define global concepts of right and wrong, without actually experiencing an upbringing in every culture, religion, and time period; living in every possible situation that has ever been presented to each individual. Even then, it may still be subjective.
    ***********************************************************************************************
    In order to preserve the human race, and the future of our children's children, their children, and thousands of generations down the line....
    ....I beg of you, please put aside your individual concepts of right and wrong, and instead place a greater emphasis on how we can work together as a species. Not as a tribe, a race, a religious group, or a specific culture, but a species.
    The species is what matters most.
    Even ants know that.

      No it isn't subjective. Hatred almost always stems from fear. It is an old outdated animal instinct.
      Primitive man threw rocks at other primitive men that looked different. Nowadays people use better rocks. We call them bullets.
      Senseless murder happens everyday, perpetuated by either fear or greed. Homophobia, Racism, Anti-[insert religion here]...Its all the same really.
      A species that kills itself in huge masses for no viable existential reason, is paradoxical at best. At worst, its a species bound to be extinct.
      We have already destroyed 90% of the Earth...You know, our only habitat...Should we spend time acting like primitive man, throwing rocks at eachother, or should we evolve and rebuild our habitat, and advance our species?

      Great comment. You could argue, however, that objective morality could be based solely on whether or not something is harmful (directly or indirectly) to other people (maybe even more generally: beings that are able to experience pain?).

    His points about the energy he used up to 'cover' being gay really struck a chord with me (but it took me far longer to see that).
    And as he says, while this is an issue for many LGBT people, I think huge amounts of energy that could be creative goes into covering - for example, the twists and turns needed to survive as a minority in repressive cultures (including religious minorities). Accepting diversity is not so much being 'PC' obsession, but a basic necessity for viable communities. Syria is a tragic example of where cultivating intolerance can lead.
