That looks like an excellent system Keith. Nice work. Something I thought while watching, you could paint each side of the blast gates with red and green paint to make it more intuitive to see at a glance if they're open or closed. Just an idea that popped into my head whilst watching 👍
Nice! It is worth remembering that the cyclone needs a large enough air-flow to separate the dust efficiently. If you hold the nozzle face down to the bench, there is not enough air to operate the cyclone, and it will by-pass the square box and go into the suction collector-can.
Not only the ‘catometer’ but also blowing into the pipe to test air tightness and then testing suction on your face.....😂Absolutely brilliant! Brilliant system. 👍

I think it would be a good idea to fashion a little hood for above in the inlet fan. If it's wet outside the fan will suck in water. A little "awning" above the fan would keep water off. This is one thing I liked about moving from the UK to the US. Dust extraction is so much cheaper here. My whole garage system cost around $300.
That is exactly the setup that I have. Cyclone, shopvac, sewage pipes. Works really well and is cheap. I just don’t have blast gates. Ill add them in my next workshop.

Awesome job, mate. The outside addition is a brilliant idea, and deadens the noise considerably. I love having a clean shop, but cleaning up is time consuming. Vacuum systems helps to free up some of your time. Fantastic.
You certainly made the right choice by buying the Numatic dust extractor with the micro-filter! Numatic International is the best company making vacuums like that. Good one, mate!
I knew a man once who did a study at University forthe idea of the British Standard Cat Unit. He actually researched how much room it took to swing a cat. No cats were harmed in the experiment. However it turns out most modern homes are smaller per room than a British Standard Cat Unit. Such is life.
Really nice setup! I’m sure some people will comment on how expensive and offer cheaper solutions but none will be as nice as your setup. The level of fine filtration, the size of the system and the low noise are amazing and cost money. I use a shop vac with a washable HEPA filter and a cyclone but the noise is so loud. Same with my compressor, I end up wearing hearing protection non-stop while in the shop. There can’t be enough said about the importance of protecting your hearing and lungs!
Thanks James. Yeah I agree. If I was doing woodwork once a week the noise thing wouldn't be so much of an issue but I'm trying to think about the future when I hope to be doing it more regularly!
I urge you to install a bug barrier for each fan if you don't want to see nasty invaders in your shed extension! Good job on the dust collection system considering the size of your workshop!

I really like the free hose suspended from the ceiling for vacking your worktops, what a great idea. And those blast gates are really simple once you know how. Nice project, well executed. Almost a thousand quid though - eek!

Nicely done. Might I suggest wrapping some bare copper wire around your pipes with the occasional screw fastening through the pipe as a means of grounding out the ductwork. These systems generate a lot of static electrical charge that poses a potential explosion hazard. Cheers Kevin
Good vid Keith, I have the single motor version of that extractor, no HEPA but I planned to pipe the air outlet outside the workshop instead. Sending the nasty stuff outside. FYI, I have my extractors and fixed machines on those remote switches you can buy from maplins, just plug in and one remote for 4 machines. Yes they really do suck!👍🏻
I'd be willing to bet the only reason you got any dust in the vacuum at all is because the suction is so powerful that the Cyclone can't generate enough centrifugal force to keep the Dust Away from the intake. Great set-up, I'm jealous!
I like your dust extraction setup. The quieter compressor and extractor are added bonuses. There's one thing that did stand out as a candidate for improvement. That's the intake and exhaust ventilation fans. Seems that they'd be exposed to precipitation, mostly rain. Perhaps a two part modification would mitigate that concern. The first part would be to pull the fans inside the extension a bit. The second part would be the addition of louvered vents on the exterior. The intake fan could use a rigid louver. The exhaust fan could use a self-closing louver commonly used on exhaust vents of clothes dryers.
Really nice setup, Keith. Planning something similar under my mobile saw station and this gave me some good ideas. Might use a plastic bin instead of building a wooden one after seeing your setup. Thanks.

Rag 'n' Bone Brown I have 2 Titans. They both have stronger suck than our house vacuum. The wet and dry one is very noisy. The other (with triple filtering) is relatively quiet. I don't plan to get rid of them, but plan to use alongside a bigger collector. I have some dyson parts that I plan to use to make cyclone pre-stages for the two vacs.

I like your set up a lot. This is not critic but what I would done differently. The external fans covers appear to have large openings, this may allow wasp to enter which is a problem in my area. I would run cyclone through hole in floor, then back into shed and ventilation system. Just think the tote being outside would make easy empty and less dust. Great look at your system, very much given me food for thought. One thing I don't understand is why you have gone to the expense if an M class filter? If the dust is being pumped outside into the extension why filter it at all, just collect it. Your workshop will be clear of dust ticking the health and safety box.
Two reasons: because I won't be here forever so the extractor may not be in the extension forever and I don't want dust exhausted in to the extension as it'll go over the insulation and make going in there to empty dust unpleasant

Your exterior fan placement makes sense, cross circulation. It will keep things cool. I would've made the cyclone the centerpiece in your extension. You're going to be accessing it much more than either of the other pieces. Not a huge deal, it will just take a little extra time.
I've watched this video several times to get ideas for my shop. I do hope it is insulated though. By the looks of the gap around your shop door, you'll never be able to keep heat in. Have you thought of a regular door for better closer and security? I was inspired by this outdoor addition for your dust collector and compressor, that I have drawn up a design for an outdoor "closet" if you will to the back side of the shop. I'll be able to stand in it if necessary. I have a type of compressor that is whisper quiet but it will go in there with the 2hp dust collector for space saving reasons. I do wish though they made a dust extractor here in the states that are as compact as yours. I'm even installing a couple of small computer fans as you did only they will be solar powered. I'll try to soundproof it to keep to the noise at a minimum and every seam will then be filled with a rock hard mastic so rodents can't enter and make a mess of the insulation. In the future when supplies and funds allow I will be building a lengthways extension to the "closet", keeping the wall to separate the two spaces, for dry wood storage. My shop is 16' long and I'm making the closet just below 6' so the wood storage will go the rest of the length of the back shop wall. It is hard not to worry about the cost of a good extractor system, but isn't the health of your lungs worth it? I would still wear a dust mask even with dust extraction. Thanks for the tips!!.
Just a suggestion, try venting or extending the the air intake and exhaust through the wall of your external shed which would reduce or remove the need for the little fans. Also the dust in the extractor is usually cause when the the suction is block or the air flow is block while changing between blast gates. This will suck the dust out of the cyclone collector. All in all a good video... thanks
Amazing work, this a realy improvement of your workshop. I don’t think the blue barrel was to thick to resist pressure. Then the box is a better choice. 👍🏻
I have one of those blue barrels - it is very good (and relatively compact), but I've managed to collapse it twice in the last six months for not having a pressure release valve... :-( I've been looking at metal alternatives, but the plastic box could be an option.
Great project - I was seriously looking at installing fixed pipes for dust collection, great to see it in action, and also all the adaptors - not sure I could stretch to the vac though!
Rag 'n' Bone Brown Did you consider about using 2" plastic waste pipe, available from plumber suppliers, appreciate not from Screwfix. Just wondering if you would get any blockages in 1 1/2 pipe. I'm using larger Triton vacuum from Screwfix currently, so don't have much spare suction to lose - just thought larger pipe would provide less resistance to air flow - Pat
You need a static discharge on that pvc pipe for safety, woodworker friend did all his, its a rare thing,but a fire can happen other wise.very easy to do. But great work mate.
A good Nilfisk or Karcher vacuum can work really well with dust extraction for tools. With excellent airflows and PET filters. They can start at about £150.
Hi Kieth, also run twin 12oow vacuum from Axminster but mine is inside my small shop, however the exhaust air from the vacuum does warm the shed up on a winters day
I will be using some of your ideas as I have built a small shed extension similar to yours, I will probably use a Record extractor as they are cheaper and filter down 0.5 micron
As Long as it does what you need it's good but some suggestions for improvement are as follows Use 68mm down water pipe ( tool station ) very cheap you can buy bends and tee connectors and 3 times more volume within the pipe . Another very common error is to vent the air outside the room it is been sucked from this means the air is the room must be replaced via gaps in doors etc this can also affect the air flow
if you hardpipe that extractor where the pipe will be semi-permanent (inside of the extension at the least) you will significantly reduce resistance from that flex hose and thus improve performance. if possible, flip the cyclone around so the horizontal tie in faces the extractor to keep the length as short as possible, and use 45 degree fittings rather than 90's. you can use a single 90 to pass through into the main shed. i install air ducts for a living - trust me, this will be money well spent. we do not even use flex pipe on exhaust or return (sucking) systems, only on supply (blowing) systems because it limits airflow too much.
you have a great machine there. iv got a twenty five year old model with 3 motors, can have 1,2 or all running and its still going strong. its Very loud though.
Great video. for the cabinet airflow, it may have been better to have one fan at the bottom and one fan at the top. This way you make sure that the airflow is optimized. Otherwise, you may end up with fresh air at the top but still warm air at the bottom. My 2 cents...
The fans probably aren't necessary, but they won't hurt. The ventilation holes alone should suffice. A hole in the extention's floor will allow more natural flow from thermal dynamic action. Window screen to stop most bugs might be a good addition, however. Did you install rain hoods? Since some of your blast gates are near your ceiling, you may want to change those. I once saw a man build triangular gates operated by short cords. If I can find it again, I'll edit this comment. Geeks Wood Shop has the video. The title is: Dust Collection Blast Gates. The fans are definitely necessary for the extractor as it overheats when they’re not turned on (found out the hard way!) possibly not for the compressor though. You lost me at the thermal dynamic action comment I’m afraid! Yes rain hoods have been installed. Blast gates on the ceiling are working fine (it’s not a high ceiling so easy to reach and out of the way!) thanks
That was already an expensive December month, but well spent! Btw, two fans are always better than one! you can keep the RPM down to get the same airflow, which means a lot less noise! So I would probably let them run a little lower if possible. Also airflow wise two fans is a better solution. It would maybe only a little more sense to mount one of them lower for a better flow profile.
Still seems to have a lot of suction even that far away. I wonder if there are any leaks or weak points. The cyclone box or those blast gates for instance where you lose suction power. Good job on the build and video.
I would fit a gravity weatherproof external vent cover to prevent rain from entering the extension! Otherwise the horizontal rain we get here in the UK will ruin your expensive equipment...!
I agree Keith a couple of screws the threads are stripped off on mine and i have not been anywhere near them. I read the manual and it states that the piston rings should be replaced after so many hours of use. So i E mailed the importer he replied spares are available readily{ which i doubt} and he knew nothing about the piston rings/seals so make of that what we will .Merry Christmas.

At 17:50 you should have a numatic HEPA flow bags in it do it doesn't plug up the filter as quick. You'll have better suction this way

I've watched this video several times to get ideas for my shop. I do hope it is insulated though. By the looks of the gap around your shop door, you'll never be able to keep heat in. Have you thought of a regular door for better closer and security? I was inspired by this outdoor addition for your dust collector and compressor, that I have drawn up a design for an outdoor "closet" if you will to the back side of the shop. I'll be able to stand in it if necessary. I have a type of compressor that is whisper quiet but it will go in there with the 2hp dust collector for space saving reasons. I do wish though they made a dust extractor here in the states that are as compact as yours. I'm even installing a couple of small computer fans as you did only they will be solar powered. I'll try to soundproof it to keep to the noise at a minimum and every seam will then be filled with a rock hard mastic so rodents can't enter and make a mess of the insulation. In the future when supplies and funds allow I will be building a lengthways extension to the "closet", keeping the wall to separate the two spaces, for dry wood storage. My shop is 16' long and I'm making the closet just below 6' so the wood storage will go the rest of the length of the back shop wall. It is hard not to worry about the cost of a good extractor system, but isn't the health of your lungs worth it? I would still wear a dust mask even with dust extraction. Thanks for the tips!!.

That's a decent workshop mate and I like the dust extraction system.. really well laid out.
Just a suggestion, try venting or extending the the air intake and exhaust through the wall of your external shed which would reduce or remove the need for the little fans. Also the dust in the extractor is usually cause when the the suction is block or the air flow is block while changing between blast gates. This will suck the dust out of the cyclone collector. All in all a good video... thanks
Thanks for the info. The fans are actually needed to keep the extractor cool as it has overheated once when I used it and forgot to switch them on
Amazing work, this a realy improvement of your workshop. I don’t think the blue barrel was to thick to resist pressure. Then the box is a better choice. 👍🏻
I have one of those blue barrels - it is very good (and relatively compact), but I've managed to collapse it twice in the last six months for not having a pressure release valve... :-( I've been looking at metal alternatives, but the plastic box could be an option.
Great project - I was seriously looking at installing fixed pipes for dust collection, great to see it in action, and also all the adaptors - not sure I could stretch to the vac though!

Rag 'n' Bone Brown Did you consider about using 2" plastic waste pipe, available from plumber suppliers, appreciate not from Screwfix. Just wondering if you would get any blockages in 1 1/2 pipe. I'm using larger Triton vacuum from Screwfix currently, so don't have much spare suction to lose - just thought larger pipe would provide less resistance to air flow - Pat

You need a static discharge on that pvc pipe for safety, woodworker friend did all his, its a rare thing,but a fire can happen other wise.very easy to do. But great work mate.

A good Nilfisk or Karcher vacuum can work really well with dust extraction for tools. With excellent airflows and PET filters.
They can start at about £150.
Hi Kieth, also run twin 12oow vacuum from Axminster but mine is inside my small shop, however the exhaust air from the vacuum does warm the shed up on a winters day

I will be using some of your ideas as I have built a small shed extension similar to yours, I will probably use a Record extractor as they are cheaper and filter down 0.5 micron

As Long as it does what you need it's good but some suggestions for improvement are as follows
Use 68mm down water pipe ( tool station ) very cheap you can buy bends and tee connectors and 3 times more volume within the pipe . Another very common error is to vent the air outside the room it is been sucked from this means the air is the room must be replaced via gaps in doors etc this can also affect the air flow

if you hardpipe that extractor where the pipe will be semi-permanent (inside of the extension at the least) you will significantly reduce resistance from that flex hose and thus improve performance. if possible, flip the cyclone around so the horizontal tie in faces the extractor to keep the length as short as possible, and use 45 degree fittings rather than 90's. you can use a single 90 to pass through into the main shed.
i install air ducts for a living - trust me, this will be money well spent. we do not even use flex pipe on exhaust or return (sucking) systems, only on supply (blowing) systems because it limits airflow too much.

Great video. for the cabinet airflow, it may have been better to have one fan at the bottom and one fan at the top. This way you make sure that the airflow is optimized. Otherwise, you may end up with fresh air at the top but still warm air at the bottom. My 2 cents...

The build quality is poor to be honest, but it works well and is really nice and quiet which is more important to me than anything.

The fans probably aren't necessary, but they won't hurt. The ventilation holes alone should suffice. A hole in the extention's floor will allow more natural flow from thermal dynamic action. Window screen to stop most bugs might be a good addition, however. Did you install rain hoods? Since some of your blast gates are near your ceiling, you may want to change those. I once saw a man build triangular gates operated by short cords. If I can find it again, I'll edit this comment.

The fans are definitely necessary for the extractor as it overheats when they’re not turned on (found out the hard way!) possibly not for the compressor though. You lost me at the thermal dynamic action comment I’m afraid! Yes rain hoods have been installed. Blast gates on the ceiling are working fine (it’s not a high ceiling so easy to reach and out of the way!) thanks

That was already an expensive December month, but well spent!
Btw, two fans are always better than one! you can keep the RPM down to get the same airflow, which means a lot less noise!
So I would probably let them run a little lower if possible.
Also airflow wise two fans is a better solution.
It would maybe only a little more sense to mount one of them lower for a better flow profile.

Still seems to have a lot of suction even that far away. I wonder if there are any leaks or weak points. The cyclone box or those blast gates for instance where you lose suction power. Good job on the build and video.
I would fit a gravity weatherproof external vent cover to prevent rain from entering the extension! Otherwise the horizontal rain we get here in the UK will ruin your expensive equipment...!

I agree Keith a couple of screws the threads are stripped off on mine and i have not been anywhere near them. I read the manual and it states that the piston rings should be replaced after so many hours of use. So i E mailed the importer he replied spares are available readily{ which i doubt} and he knew nothing about the piston rings/seals so make of that what we will .Merry Christmas.

Really good video and excellent choices but since the extractor is in the shed extension which is where the air is expelled why did you need a Heppa filter.
