@@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines My thanks to you, sir! Daily, I navigate Boston. The legend is, that the roads were laid on existing cow-trails, effectively allowing much of the city to be planned by cattle. The average driving commuter spends 164 hours in traffic per year. I daydream about fixes I will never see implemented. Watching this is very cathartic.

It's called a mini roundabout. Very common in the UK. The idea is to implement roundabout rules to a junction that has no space for a full roundabout.

So by the magic of the YT algorithm I watched a driving instructor video on mini-roundabouts. It seems Britain is weird about them (not as weird as the French though, so that's something), you have to yield to traffic from the right (left for right-hand traffic countries) regardless if you're in the junction or before entering? but what about "normal" roundabouts in Britain, do you have right of way after entering those?

    • @ninesquared81
      @ninesquared81 4 роки тому

@@RogerNorling mini roundabouts have exactly the same rules as normal roundabouts: absolute priority on the roundabout (at least in the UK). Due to their size however, this usually boils down to giving way to traffic approaching fron your right, but really it's giving way to traffic on the mini roundabout.
Also, a rule that is often ignored by drivers is that you're supposed to go around the 'middle' of the mini roundabout, not across it.

It is clear that the game was not designed to allow for a perfect simulation of something as "compact" as the swinton roundabout. But you also had a lot more room there - it not having to fit into pre-existing space - so you could have done it using the less compact baseline roads.

There is a logical reason. Instead of the need to circle hole runabout if you should turn left you take inner one and is out ASAP, if you go right, the outer one.
On the real thing those small once also do so you depending on traffic can take different path to the same exit depending on traffic.

  • @aubergine10
    @aubergine10 4 роки тому

I heard you had trouble when trying to move from STABLE to LABS version. It's due to game engine issue:
    1. Only one version of TM:PE can be used at a time (others must be completely unsubscribed - disabling is NOT sufficient, they must be completely unsubscribed)
    2. After changing mod version you MUST exit to desktop, then relaunch the game. If you don't do that, the old version will still be active in memory - the only way to flush it from memory is exit to desktop.
This is due to the way Mono (which Unity engine runs in) handles its AppDomain mods. It's not something that can be fixed at the modding level.

    You and your rotaries...
BTW, ever wonder why the USA doesn't have many rotaries? It all has to do with the number of "intersections", i.e. potential stop points. This includes for both pedestrians and vehicles. And since pedestrians have ultimate right of way, you could theoretically clog up the circle. Not to mention each intersection is a potential accident point (and let's face it, compared to your requirements for attaining a driver's license, we effectively just have to back out of a parking space and we get a license). So the various DOTs much prefer traditional intersections with tri-color signals or stop signs (yield signs are a rarity outside of ramps).

It would be kinda neat if done well. Maybe not a full blown collision detection (that would be kinda hard on the game I reckon) but maybe a risk factor on junctions that are based on traffic lights, allowed speed, amount of streets in that junction, amount of traffic, etc. And then accidents may occur from time to time which need to be handled by police/ambulance/hearse causing traffic jams, closed lanes, etc. Yeah I would play with that mod.

It's the game getting confused with the angle of the connection and you can fix it by shifting the segment around very slightly with moveit.
He's the author if the cul-de-sac pack you've already showcased and also the Tiny Highways pack that this roundabout is made of. The highways pack automatically draws continuous lane lines through nodes and make super awesome looking junctions automatically. Definitely a creator to keep an eye on!

Most traffic congestion problems in this game are created by people’s lack of planning and building a better road network. I see too often someone made a roadway intersection thats a bottleneck simply because they did not build other parallel road routes. One key strategy of traffic management, whether in reality or fiction, is having redundancy in a network...not to rely on one intersection or road to manage traffic access to an area.
Roundabouts work in certain design situations, but they are not a “solve all problems” solution. Back to back roundabouts or even signalled intersections without proper road distance in between is another traffic congestion generator. Its called “access management” in civil engineering, which is my real world industry.

    • @Texelion3Dprints
      @Texelion3Dprints 4 роки тому +1

I think that most people start playing the game, with limited amount of cash and locked upgrades and just build stuff as they can until they realize it doesn't work and now they need even more cash to solve the problems, just to create other problems down the line. Or just start a new city, over and over.
You CANNOT plan ahead unless you've played the game for dozens of hours or read/watched a bunch of guides. But if a guide just tells you what to do, what's the point of actually playing the game ?
On top of that you need to know which mods to install because the base game is lacking a lot of options.

A note about speed limits on the toll roads: here in Oklahoma (USA) we have little sensors that is placed just below the rear-view mirror on the windshields. There are scanners placed above the lanes with a wide angle lens, so they can scan cars as they pass in our automated toll roads. So, no need to slow down at all. Traffic flow is much, much better and cars can maintain speed. The only time a car has to slow or stop is when they pay cash, and those have a exit/on ramp to an area off to the side of the main roadway. Needless to say that is not often used, but is a feature of toll roads here.
Magic Roundabout: Looks nice, a bit more for the intermediate and advance Cities Skylines player. However, after watching you use this, I can see myself placing and setting it up nicely! Thanks for the mini-tutorial in game! Also, it looks like the center of a spider web! :) Very happy with this segment of the video.
Also, a side note about trains, I was looking around on UA-cam, and noted another player using the landscaping tool to "sink" tracks a tiny bit, so that the road going over is at one level, and the tracks are not underground. Would you ever use this technique in your city for train tracks or even roads? It is a realistic feature of cities in the US, not sure of other countries. Just a thought, and though you do have a very unique play style (which I do love!) this would also add some variety to the look of your city.

    • @battlestar79

Christine Murphy - I use terrain editing all the time to fine tune grading design for road and rail crossings. Hardest thing to edit is tunnels that afe changing grade inside hills or mountains, as by default, gradeline wants to follow parallel to surface. Building a spiral road inside a hill or mountain is hard. In one city, I have some underground freeways and interchanges. Unfortunately I do not yet have a video camera or know how to do videos like ones used for these city tutorials.

@@battlestar79 This player just lowered the terrain a bit, added the train tracks and then put the road over the train tracks. I know it is used a bit in the city I live in, and in the rural areas, they don't use concrete on the sides, but in the cities they do. It's not quite a tunnel, but is still requires a bridge.
Use programs like OBS (Open Broadcast Software), which is free to use. You can also use it to stream with (both Twitch and UA-cam).

    • @agsystems8220

Because it copes much better with right turns than a regular roundabout (UK, so all the way around the roundabout). If you have a route of heavy traffic that mostly goes all the way around a roundabout then that can cause very long waits to traffic from other directions, because inflow is never going to be interrupted. By diverting right turning traffic away from the rest of the roundabout other directions are guaranteed to be able to get into the junction, balancing the flow.
It sounds like a fairly obscure case, but if you have a large commercial area one way and a large residential area in an adjacent direction it will happen in either the morning or the evening.

Binged your city fixing while playing the game...
I started playing last sunday early morning hours, I already have 81 hours in the game. (Yes life is a foreign concept to me)
My city is only little over 50k. And I have micromanaged the living crap out of it.
I've also made 10 million, but the last 30 hours it has just been going back and fourth between 8 million and 13 million.
I'd love to send my city for getting insight to everything that I'm doing wrong, cuz having this many hours and such a small city and barely making any money since the first expansion to it and being "afraid to expand" because it will cause more traffic, just can't be normal.

SPOILER ALERT! Great channel Biffa, and well done to the person that re-created the Swindon Magic Runabout. It must have taken a lot of work. Also it looks great in Biffa's City-scape. (DON"T READ THE NEXT BIT!)
It IS a bit late. BUT! my OCD keeps kicking in badly. I used to Live near Swindon and drive though those roundabouts often. I noticed a slight error in this design. The outer extreme 3rd anti clockwise lane is suppose to be the footpath/sidewalk. Instead of 2 lanes and the single going anticlockwise (outer ring). The 3 lanes are together. Easy mistake.
If you view The SMR in Goggle Maps. Use satellite view and zoom in, At first glance it is great copy. (In a reverse direction which is even harder.) Count the lanes Also go to street view. Look to the outside edge. The 3rd 'lane' is not a road. It is for pedestrians. (Looks like a road).
This doesn't really change anything. It still a 6 lane roundabout. This one might even be better.
SORRY! This has bugged me for ages but I didn't want to spoil it for everyone. I hope no one sees this. But at least now I have 'confessed!'
    Have a great day:)

A new trend is to reduce cars in cities. Here in Nice, France they just deleted a dedicated bus lane in major streets. leaving only one lane shared between emergency, bus, cars (bonkers) but on the side there is a nice garden with a zigzaging cycle lane. All that is bracketed by a tramway that is going underground, not all the way but mostly. Is it possible in simulation to really draw down cars trafic, and make more pedestrian, more bike, more bus more tramway viable ?? (in Nice their thing looks crazy because busses have trouble turning now with those reduced intersections, but we all know that real life sucks while simulations rocks !!)

Why would you use the toll policy and then keep the speed at 20, i'd set it the same as the highway speed.
Its my experience (albeit limited) that tolls make little to no money at all, its not worth the hassle.
The road-about doesn't look very good, it could use some aligning etc. As for the arrows in the wrong direction, there may be 2 nodes on top of each other ?

Kinda logical why the winner runabout goes the other way, that makes it so effective cause you can take the closest way.
If you come to it, and should turn left, you simply take the inner runabout and are out, if you should go right, you take the outer runabout.

Regarding 4:00 I once made a Toll loop whereby they had to go through the toll 4 times by using lane management to slowly move them through each lane-booth until they had passed through all 4 and the last one exited onwards. My wife said it was super mean but I thought it was an epic way to generate money.

      - Go to Steam Workshop for Cities Skylines (steamcommunity.com/app/255710/workshop/)
      - Find the mod you want and click "Subscribe"
      - Get into the Mods section of the game and activate it (and change its settings if needed)
      Some important mods:
      Traffic Manager President Edition
      Move it!
      More mods:
      Roundabout Builder
Parallel Roads (a bit buggy I'd say, but sometimes worth trying)
      Network Extensions 2 (additional roads)
SimpleClock (You _will_ lose track of time and the game doesn't originally have an ingame clock???)
Fine Road Tool / Fine Road Anarchy (two mods)
Prop Precision / Prop Snapping / Prop & Tree Anarchy (three mods)
There are plenty more of course, that's just a few suggestions.
