I am also very upset. This time I will not upgrade, but wait for MSFS and rather try them out and even save. I do have X-Plane in use as well, yet it does not go as good with my G1000 bezel as P3D does. Having already spent way too much money on Orbx etc it is not an easy decision to make, but it has to stop somewhere. I guess Lockheed´s P3D is making it’s money on ATDs and military users and should offer retail clients a reasonable priced update. For me personally this would be around 50 USD every second year.

POINT OF CORRECTION: It has been pointed out by a number of people, quite correctly, that MSFS is based on the DX11 API and not DX12 as mentioned in the above video. Apologies for this error. As mentioned by Asobo in Seattle in 2019 there are plans to port MSFS to DX12 at a later date. I believe the aim is to complete this prior to release of the program, but I am not in a position to guarantee this.

As interesting as this is, there's not a chance I'm going to sink $200 on this before seeing what MSFS 2020 looks like, particularly with the X-plane Vulkan upgrade looking quite promising for a quarter of the price. Lockheed and P3D served a very valuable role while Microsoft was in the wilderness keeping flight simming going, and arguably helping to rekindle its resurgence, but it rather feels it's time to hand the baton on.

I never go for the pro versions of P3D, so $60 USD per major update is about the most I generally pay. As an owner of both XP11 and both P3DV4, I've always predominantly been a P3D user simply because it has the addons and features that I want. There are some neat stuff that XP11 has that P3D V4 simply lacks (such as updated airports, improved graphics, and sloped runways), and it seems that V5 helps bridge the gap between P3D and XP11. While FS2020 is indeed coming out soon, I feel that I will still maintain my P3D setup for some time yet, as I do use the platform to also stay proficient for irl type rating recurrent purposes. Therefore, I think I will upgrade, provided that at least my most important addons still work.

Same here, I don't know if this deserve to be updated.
I'm currently using P3D v4 heavily modded runing like a charm (or a least as much as my old hardware allows it :)). I was planning to upgrade my PC this year and it will probably already cost a lot. Yes, the performance gain offered by Dx12 is really interesting and the new lighting effects seems cool as the slopped runways. I don't like how the clouds looks with TrueSky (I didn't already liked them on FSW).
But in definitive does this require spending another $199 (not including the price of updating some addons) and all the time it will take to re-download and install these addons ? I'm not sure.
Not even speaking about XP12 and MSFS20 incoming...
A discount for v4 users would maybe help to take a decision but right now I don't know yet if i will go with v5...

Not sure the pros really care about lighting effects, TrueSky clouds, NVidia Waterworks or Dx12... Stay safe.

Despite my earlier comments about waiting for P3Dv5.1 I purchased a Pro License last week.
I’ve been trying it out on my desk-top pc with various combinations of ORBX software and with ASP3D beta.
Now, this is a top-end W2F pc and I’m getting a very good visual experience using ORBX TE Washington and TEGB Central at 30 FPS. It’s just a bit jerky at ULTD.
I also tried the P3DV5 experimental weather settings. I like the way it does haze layers but if I wanted an “orange porridge” sim I’d go straight to XPlane.
What is impressive is the ability, with DX12, to get a true 8/8 undercast at Fl 390 that extends to the visual horizon and doesn’t stop the sim working.
I’m shortly going to move the license to my other pc which drives the sim for a Jetmax 738 sstd using sim-avionics. It’s a couple of years old and has a 1080 graphics card. But, I only use ORBX OLCs for high altitude flying, plus specific airports and AS/ASCA for weather so I’m looking forward to the comparison.
MSFS 2020 is “jam tomorrow” and I’m looking forward to trying it out.
But, with a significant investment in ORBX, and other software, that is transferable to P3DV5 I will have to be convinced as to the benefits of MSFS202 over P3DV5 if I’m to move totally to it.

Thanks for the video and update information. My initial response was that I was probably not going to upgrade from P3Dv4 to v5 ... at least not for a while and until I know what add-on developers will be charging for upgrades. (BTW I’m not an X-plane user due to all the FSX and P3D add-on investments over the years). However, it seems that there is generally 100% backward compatibility for most scenery (as before) and most developers are offering free upgrades - including, most importantly for me, PMDG (although not 100% confirmed as yet). The trueSKY and WaveWorks 2.0 Visual updates and the DirectX12 performance updates are very attractive to me. Sloped runways are also very nice to see. While I am hugely looking forward to FS2020, I would most definitely like to get much more mileage out of the large number of add-on investments I have made over the years in FSX and then P3Dv4. I’m a very happy P3Dv4 customer and will most likely upgrade to P3Dv5. One area of ‘concern’ for me currently relates to the flight dynamics and physics (which has received much treatment in FS2020) - so I’m hoping that this will receive some attention in the point updates. However, it is good to see that ground contact reaction is now done per contact point - so there are some signs of improved physics :-). Take care and looking forward to your next video as always.

First, I generally wait a year or so to upgrade to give the third party developers an opportunity to catch up. A lot depends on how well version 4 addons work with the new simulator.
Second, a lot depends ol MFS2020's backward compatibility. How well will my old addons work with it? If there is no backwards compatibililty, then I expect it to take years before developers to catch up, and I am not at all sure if I want to re-purchase addons I already own for FSX and Prepar3d.

I uninstalled P3d sometime ago, took the plunge into XP11 after being a former long loyal supporter of the P3d product. It must be said P3d was able to provide me with an intriguing and very satisfying flying experience for many years and it’s not difficult to see why it still has such a massive support base. I am still of the opinion that XP11, despite it’s shortfalls, provides a very realistic flying experience, it’s constantly updated and what’s greatest of all is the sheer amount of free quality addons available, it’s a great platform for those wanting maximum realism on a moderate budget. IRO MSFS2020, with so much said, the community has pretty high expectations of this upcoming platform. MSFS2020 will not be a refined out of the box product, it will (hopefully) be constantly updated, and as with predecessors and modern day flight sims, require a whole bunch on tweaking and refinement to find an acceptable tradeoff. My advice, forget about what you’ve invested, and invest in what you mostly enjoy, wait for MSFS2020 and if it’s your primary preference then transition as and when you wish. Long post, sorry for this but it’s about the best advice I could possibly offer in a few sentences :)

When it comes to choosing between FS2020 and P3D5 I made my decision last week and went with P3D5. My ultimate aim with flightsimming was to get a 300 million dollar simulator in my home where I can fly a fully functioning 777 or 737 anywhere in the world. With PMDG, ORBX, PFPX, Navigraph and ActiveSky installed I have what I want. Yes FS2020 looks amazing ...... however there are too many questions regarding costs such as how much bandwidth will it cost me flying a 777 from Sydney to London at high altitude? When I am away from home in an area with limited Internet I can fly with P3D..... this would not be the case with FS2020 where you would need a good Internet. So.... at this stage, I am happy staying with P3D5.

I haven't spent a single dime over the purchase price of $60, and I have gorgeous textures (Ortho4XP), lots of free aircraft (of varying quality), and a very realistic flight model. All I can say is, I'm glad I made the choice. :-)

I don't want to be negative, but I am really tired of spending so much money upgrading my computer (spent over $7,000) just to get the sim to run smoothly at its full potential, spending money on sceneries, Aerosoft, PMDG (all aircrafts), REX, Active Sky, Chris Bell, Quality Wings, etc. Now Prepared wants us to purchase another license to upgrade to V5 without any discounts ! I understand they worked hard on it, but still give us discounts. I just can't wait for the new 'Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020' to be available.

I wasn't aware that P3d users were NOT given a discount for renewal, and lets face it there's been quite a few updates and upgrades . . . .I am pretty shocked if not disgusted that they haven't been supported with relevant discounts for there commitment. Take a third party like Orbx whom have honored their customers with a multi install across at least three platforms, FSX / FSX-se / P3d v1 through to v5. Now you would think a much larger company like "Lockheed Martin" might Honor the very customers and franchise they bought into! I was thinking of buying into P3d for the first time while letting FS2020 slide for a few years, but this has me thinking!

Guys lets not forget MS Flight, oh that just sank. oh not to mention internet connection required all the time and the thing is you are required to pay a subscription for what amounts to access only, I'm as eager as any for all the new sims but not sure paying an ongoing subscription for something that can be turned off and left with nothing is an option for me. At the very least both Xplane and P3D are solely on your PC and can be for as long as you want, so if you don't want to trade up or in then keep using the old car and yes I'm in the same boat as most with the investment in add-ons.

I will be waiting on the release of MSFS. I’m happy with P3DV4.5 and have some favorite planes that I like to fly. I even still use FSX to fly other planes I don’t have in P3D. I also enjoy flying Xplane11 and with the recent release of the 11.50c, it is showing great performance improvements particularly for flying in VR. With three good Sims and MSFS with all its Utopian appeal, I think it’s better to wait and see how the new sims measure up. Particularly as for both, there will be a need to purchase planes of choice as they are made available, not to mention customized scenery and airports etc. I don’t like to think how much I’ve sunk into simulation over the years.

I just want to clarify a small mistake: DirectX 12 is not a graphics engine, it's a graphics API. Things like Unreal, Frostbite, CryEngine are graphics engines, while DirectX, OpenGL and Vulkan are APIs. APIs are what you use to build a graphics engine.
This is to say that P3Dv5 and MSFS both eventually using DX12 means nothing, it's like saying that Hamlet and some random teen romance novel both use the english language. Or for a gaming related example: Doom 2016, Doom Eternal and X-Plane 11.50 all use Vulkan, but that's where the similarities end.

    • @SimHangerFS

My 2 cents: I'll be waiting on purchasing either the new P3d or MSFS2020. The former because I want the shakedown cruise to occur before I invest another $60 U.S. and the latter because there is no VR support expected for the near future. That's a total non-starter for me.

Unfortunately for me there is no WOW factor in the version 5 release. With a level change (and a further licence fee) I am looking for something that makes me want to buy it coz it';s so much better than the competition. Cannot see that in P3Dv5. It's just coming up to the standard of the current Xplane11 beta. However from what I've heard from every MFS2020 Alpha user is WOW. So that's why I'm saving my pennies until MFS2020 is released. Until then I will continue using the current P3Dv4, DCS and Xplane11.

Personally I'm going to play the waiting game. I usually skip a version update because I know one will be coming soon. So I went from V2 to V4. Anyway V5 looks awesome but with MS2020 and Xplane 11 Vulcan update, I have more reason to wait to see what each one will bring to the table. I hate having to lose ac due to updates but I know that happens.
Still, there is going to be enough content to give us options. Personally, I tend to purchase sims based on third party support. So at the end of the day, I'm going to enjoy what I have, watch where things go in 6 months to a year of release then press the purchase button on which sim I feel will give me the best experiences for my money. I can't afford to buy them all anymore. :-)

I also have invested a considerable amount in P3D and addons. I will not be updating anytime soon. Most addons currently have limited information about update compatibility. That combined with several customized files that need to be carefully saved so they don’t get written over after update. Last update I spent days getting my system stabilized and working again. The update cost and headache at this point doesn’t seem worth it. Not saying updates should be free at least a discount could be offered to existing customers.

Like many I've sunk thousands and thousands into P3D and so many scenery and utilities, and also done the same with X-plane from 9 to 11. The frame rate improvements with XP11.50beta are just gob-smacking even with the settings fully cranked up to a level I previously thought impossible..
The only reason I've upgraded/rebuilt (the last three times) my PC was for P3D but even a 5Mhz 8700 with 64GB Ram and RTX 2080TI have made little difference (not so for XP11)
Knowing how good MSFS 2020 will eventually be is very exciting and of course it will be on my PC on day 1 but I still won't dump X-Plane and look forward to v12.
Unfortunately, I haven't experienced value for money with all my P3D upgrades.
I just feel most of what I have been paying for is bug fixes and of course, each time, some payware aircraft and scenery have to be dumped or upgraded at significant cost with very little to show for it all.
I'm pretty sure I've spent more time reading in the forums and tweaking and tweaking in an attempt to gain just one or two fps than I have spent flying.
I think I'm going to need to see some really amazing fps boosts (close to double which is what XP11.50 is showing me) and some major visual improvements (scenery popping, black spots, stutters, pauses) in many UA-cam review videos before I would consider a P3Dv5 upgrade.
Given the time, money and tears I have given to P3D, it's going to really hurt to give up though, but definitely time to slap myself and get over it and move on.

Is it very much like FSX? I went to X-Plane while I wait for the mothership to come to port. But had always been a Microsoft guy.

    Hi Mark
A provocative little video, but I think we’ve all been anticipating P3D.V5.
A colleague of mine used to say “never fly the Mk1 of anything” and I’m grateful I just missed the Mk1 Buccaneer.
Now I’m not going down the XPlane route. I don’t like the “orange porridge” and it’s not compatible with Sim-Avionics.
But, like most of us, I have a significant investment in ORBX for P3Dv4.
So I’m just going to sit on my hands and wait to see what pans out.
A major factor will be what ORBX does wrt upgrading current purchases to both P3D v5 and MSF 2020.
I currently run two licensed copies of P3Dv4: one driving a Jetmax 738 and one for VFR in both fw & rw ac.
So whilst I will be replacing P3Dv4 on both idc the replacements my be different depending on how each fit my requirements for the two different types of “swimming”.

the key (for me) is that so far, none of the addons I run will incur an upgrade fee. Indeed, compatibility is so good that at least one dev said you could just point v5 at your v4.5 libraries and they could be shared. Another said a simple copy-paste from v4.5 install to v5 should work fine.
Combine that with my $69 Academic License, and it makes sense for me to upgrade, since we've no idea when MS FS will actually be released (esp given the pandemic).

If we are all honest, then it’s the $199 license we should buy. Again, like others, I’ve got the sim looking pretty good. Lastly, and the ultimate deciding factor is I cannot really afford it right now. With the state of the world, I like many are self employed so waiting for some government help. I too have invested way to much money in this hobby. I might would consider v5 if and only if all my payware can be installed with it and not need a bunch of updates. You can count on many third party companies to charge for v5 updates, PMDG being the main one. Thankfully ORBX seems to be doing the correct thing, as they usually do. Thank you for the video and thought provoking question.

So if you already have the P3d v4 Pro, this update is not free?? Then i Know i will wait til the FS2020 come out, spent enought on this platform already!

Thank you for those insights and your thougts. Mine go in the same direction - on the other hand, all my investments in p3d over the past years will most presumably be usable in v5 at no extra cost. Not sure, how all the developers will handle this for MSFS2020. But for the very moment, I hold my credit card still, enjoy my new hardware and v4.5 on it. All the best to you, stay safe in those times!

I don't see any major changes to the upgrade apart from cloud art and water art which can be easily applied using third party addon. I wouldn't upgrade to V5, rather I'll invest in MSFS 2020 to atleast get realistic building and environment textures around the airport.

I agree there should be a upgrade price that at least respects those who invested in past versions. A sliding scale for v4, v3 etc. I can get a upgrade on say a video converter that 30 to 50 percent of a new users price, why would i pay full price for a new version of P3D that's lets say 40 percent better than v4. Do the math = 40% better but 100% the price. .. cheers

    Well Mark,
Let's turn the question a little bit to another perspective: Would you/we buy this V5 version IF MSFS wasn't on the horizon?
I think the proper question is: Are we willing to spend (more) money on prepar3d/X-plane knowing something big is coming?
If I was a virtual bush flyer the answer would be, certainly not cause what MSFS showing us so far, that new sim would be a perfect match for this kind of simmers.
On the other hand, we don't have too much proof/information (yet) that the new sim ( MSFS) will bring us the virtual tube line simmers enough
    possibilities to continue towards MSFS.
If tube line flying is rewarding enough at the start when MSFS is released, then an investment in prepar3d is something we can argue about.

I used P3D v4 for about a year now and switched to X Plane 11 i feel that P3D has some good feature like ProAtc and the PMDG planes but it costs too much to get at least a little of realism as in X Plane the price per realism it s quite balanced
Me personally i will stick to X Plane till MSFS comes out hopefully MSFS it is what it promises

Wow, $199.00. I think I'm in the same boat. I've purchased hundreds maybe thousands of dollars on scenery, weather engines etc. Not to including the investment in all the PMDG aircraft for both FSX and P3D. Lets not forget my recent hardware purchases Yoke/Throttle Quad. I think i'll stick with version 4.5 until MSFS2020 hits the street. I guess i might follow Mr. Fuller idea and start planning on a new build for FS2020. Or possibly find a new hobby. (Not really) just venting! I think it will be hard watching all the other simmers flying this new platform so i might need to tune out a bit! Great vid as always, Thank you for posting. Standing by to see what you do as well. Stay safe and healthy. Happy Easter to you all.

I hesitated going from p3d 2.5 to 4... But in the end paid the price. Then i find out A2A wants more money, for upgrading my old fsx/p3d installs up to the new standard. That closed the casket for me. Now i do get that they need to pay bills, but i think they overcharged, so i lost interest completly sadly. p3d without A2A planes is pointless to me. so now i only play DCS

I stuck to P2D v2.5 for a long time because I didn't want to throw away my investments as many 3rd parties asked for a huge amount of money just to go to the 64bit with no extras. When I upgraded my computer last year I switched to X-Plane especially because of the sloped runways and the open character of addons. I will definitively not switch back to P3D with MSFS2020 coming up.

As a user of both P3D v4.5 and XP11 I am interested to see how the actual release of v5 actually plays out. I have a pretty high end system and have been fairly disappointed by the performance of v4.5 on it. XP11 as well disappointed me but to a much less degree and with Vulkan looming am hoping to actually be able to release the beast so to say that my system is. If the DX12 API can do for P3D what Vulkan is looking to be able to do for XP11 I would likely jump in to the pool. But for now I will wait and see. I am a new full time streamer of Flight Sims and would love to showcase the wonders of v5 if it turns out to warrant it. But as of now most of my P3D flying is off stream as XP11 even pre-Vulkan has proven to be more reliable and visually pleasing. I have thousands of $$$ into my aircraft and scenery in P3D and would love to be able to use them proudly like I currently do in XP11 on stream.

I plan to do what everyone will likely do, buy all three and compare. I think the decision on when Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 comes out will play a role on if people wait or buy Prepar3d 5.0. I think for the Linux and Mac users, it is an easier decision due to X-Plane is the only one to support those platforms. My investments today are in X-Plane but I love having choices. It is a good time for the the flight sim industry.

I'm in the same boat - probably $2000 into v4 add-ons alone. Rex, AS, traffic, all of Orbx North America, countless other airports, most carenado/alabeo, aerosoft, pmdg, cap'n sim. . . Add on compatibility AND ease of installation are primary to me. Am I gonna spend 3 days reinstalling all of this stuff? Secondary is performance/bugginess. If I spend more time combing thru forums looking for tweaks/fixes than flying, booooo for that. What are they charging for this thing, like $60? No problem as I spend that weekly on gas. I'm not driving for obvious reasons. So I'll probably buy it, but discard it if aforementioned criteria is not met

Another good video sir . I think they are going to have to look at their sales model . A heavily discounted upgrade price would go a long way .They need to do something if they want to remain a viable and popular platform for simmers . MSFS 2020 is going to change the simming world . If it`s as good as we are all hoping , everything will be affected . If it`s only half as good as it looks . There will be a lot of people considering any other platform upgrade . Wait and see is going to be the path i choose . I think it`s going to be a well trodden path at that . Keep up the good work sir .

Out of the box P3D is pretty bland, but when you invest in new aircraft, weather and scenery it becomes an enjoyable sim. I will want to know that the majority of my add-on's are compatible, before I upgrade to the new version.

Having just got Xplane11 and with MS2020 heading our way I find it hard to justify going down the P3Dv5 route until MS2020 is launched and the community has a chance to review it fully. My concern, quite possibly erroneous, is that with my 10Mbps internet speed I won’t get the full benefit of the MS2020 scenery, in which case I might get P3Dv5 and keep using the money pit of add-ons I have accumulated!

I would have expected - rather hoped for - LM to at least discount the new version for those who had purchased previous versions. I have purchased all versions thus far, with my first purchase being the Academic Version before updating to the Professional Version because of the annoying watermark on the Academic Version (that was almost a tongue twister). This watermark was designed, I would say, to drive people to upgrade to the Professional Version and of course hand over more cash. Flight Simulation is a very expensive pastime (or training tool) when combined with scenery and other add-ons, and of course hardware. I feel for people with limited funds.
X-Plane and AeroFly both disappointed me and although I still have them I find them frustrating and slow to update - so they gather virtual dust and will remain that way. So that leaves only P3d for me and I suppose I will have to dish out more cash without a discount (they give you nothing for loyalty). I think Microsoft FS2020 can't come quick enough despite the monthly subscription. I added all my FS costs up a few weeks ago and it came to around AU$40K since 1993 - I don't regret that but I am getting older and I wonder if shovelling more costly coal on the FS fires is worth it.
LM may be shooting themselves in the undercarriage by maintaining their current pricing model.
