Number one goal is to build relationships - absolutely! Building trust, getting to know people and finding ways of supporting the members of your new team, will ensure you go a long way

This along with the no excuses video will help a lot for being the new manager in a restaurant where most employees are used to getting away with slacking. This will be useful in leading them the correct way.

Jason Salistean I’ll be the first to admit when I can get away with slacking I’ll slack. You don’t let me I won’t. And I don’t hate the boss for not letting me slack. In fact I respect them. But not all people feel the same and I get that. But it needs to change.

My last manager had that mentality. "I'm the manager and you all must bow down." He was a big micro manager, too. We hated him. He was transferred to a new store after about 8 months because he couldn't sustain the upward trajectory of the store that the previous manager had set.
We were one of the best selling stores in the region and he felt the need to come in and change everything. Now we are at the bottom of the list in everything; sales, customer delight index, etc.

The best relationships I had was form by going through the suck together. The civilian world it’s not near the same, so when something that might suck like staying late, be sure to be there with them and find ways to help. Go grab a meal and snack (one that’s specific to each individual too) while they get the job done. Pay attention to someone having a bad day and grab them something, ie a cold brew from their favorite local coffee place.

I’ve just taken over a restaurant. I am younger than every chef except the apprentice. This is a well functioning team and turns over high volume of customers, they do have their issues and inefficiencies however. I feel strange to be honest and it’s been a struggle to gel with the team

Yessir. What people overlook is the little aspects of extreme ownership. Ive found it to be an unforgiving and ongoing process when you adopt this mindset in your day to day life.

Sadly some basic elements of leadership are sorely lacking in the business world. I currently work 'for' a GM that berates the entire team (except me-cause he knows I'm not only squared away but I don't take any shit either) and then expects everyone to be 'on board' and toe the line until the next berating rolls in. Things will be much different when I take over.

There's nothing wrong with being a nerd. Great advice though. 👍
To make the point further in case someone didn't get it, be the strong, smart one in the group if you're going to be the leader. Sometimes you have to be very firm and show people who the boss is, it's GOING to happen. But if you do it in the right way, and you treat them like PEOPLE when you do it (no matter what you may be "feeling"), they will have amazing respect for you in the end that won't be shaken from then on (either that or you're rid of them).
Don't be a thick headed egotistical ball busting killjoy. You may think it doesn't matter, you may think people don't matter, but in the big picture you will answer for it in some form or another. God has a very low tolerance for people like you.

The only difference between me and that big shot Detective from New York, (not Augusta) is the body of water. He's a barracuda in a Sea of Evil. I'm a shark in a pond. There's not a fish in this pond I haven't studied. That's the only difference. I knew the people that Murdered my mother. I still like the Sound of Music, though.

Whatever his forte is it isn't being a president or the leader of quote the most power full nation on earth !
