    I feel like Tom and Trott in combat really perfectly personify wizards and sorcerers. Tom is thinking about things and strategizing really hard and pulls out masterful moves like a wizard, and Trott seemingly doesn't think about anything at all sometimes and just instinctively pulls out the most insane stuff ever like a sorcerer.

    The image of Hesper desperately searching for Quill, splitting himself into many possibilities and using all of his remaining magic for Quill. That made me cry. And I will never forget it.

    Watching the show you forget how brave a thing it is to put a character (or world) out there and let all of us randoms watch and nitpick every decision made in the heat of the moment. Hearing you all reflect on old choices and how you’ve grown as players (including DM in this) has been a privilege and a pleasure, and has (hopefully) gone a long way to improving the way I play in my own game. Thank you for 5 years of top tier escapism, looking forward to campaign 3 and watching you all create another excellent story!

    Quill's flight was the first time I legit sobbed in this campaign and I was at work listening to it haha. And I had just rewatched the How to Train Your Dragon movies so I remember when Kim described the wing as HTTYD esque I was like Heeell yesss. I had "Test Drive" playing in my head the entire time when Quill was flying and to this day I probably associate that theme as much with Quill as I do with HTTYD.

      I recently got a new job and our employers let us listen to stuff while we work. I binged the shit out of aerois to get caught back up. Those last two archs, man. It's hard to work and cry at the same time. "Howard" made me cry laughing so hard I almost puked.

    My favorite character arc was definitely the evolution of Quill and Nova. Their conflict and arguments causing a rift in the party, and then them learning to trust each other when Nova finished his wing, and then everything coming full circle when he went to the astral sea to bring her back home. THAT SHIT FUCKED ME UP EVERY TIME

    Watching this really highlights what makes High Rollers so special for me, it's how highly collaborative it is. Mark is an amazing DM, NPC creator/player extraordinaire and fantastic world builder, however, it is the clear that so much of what he is able to create so well is in large part due to the players own efforts (absolutely zero disrespect to Mark intended, the opposite in fact as he as a DM has made that contribution by his players possible, it's a fine art to master and he is amazing at drawing his players into the story and giving them all a meaningful contribution to the story/world). Each one of them is individually very talented and creative but High Rollers is way more than the sum of it's parts because you are all so invested in the stories and characters together.

      Also, going high level is easier in systems like WoD (my experience is of NWoD e1 which from e2 became Chronicles of Darkness and is now published by Onyx Path). The xp giving/spending and character progression is way more nuanced and individualised and allows or more tailoring of campaign to party and is less stressful for the DM to manage players having cool powers with creating meaty foes. Mechanics are also simpler dice and roll wise and they feel like they get in the way less (especially when it comes to cool player ideas ands improv) and provide basic structure more. It lends itself to the sand box "here is the world/it's issues/mysteries/politics etc what are you going to do with that?". We've been playing one fantasy world (home brewed world and home adjusted system) at different points of it's history and with a different cast of characters for over 20 years (with the odd 1-2 year break into a bio dome world or vampire game while the GM updates the world/system/take a break to get inspired for another story).

    21:22, that's how I use injuries in my main game. When they fail that last death save or they take mass damage, I give them the choice and roll on an expanded table based on damage type.

    A late to the party comment that I can't resist making. I've watched 191 episodes in just under three months. I've never watched a full D&D campaign before, and this has been... well. You know.
    A few thoughts as I watch, which I will try, and fail, to keep brief.
    - Injury rules. Loved them. So many early moments were defined by them. I was disappointed that you stopped using them, though I understand why.
    - Fighting the wraiths of Rosehall was probably the moment I realised I was hooked. Lucius and Qill were both so close to perma-death, I could barely breathe through the tension. The Aegis V escape was a similar feeling, and I hated it (while loving it).
    - My favourite thing throughout was Nova's progressing relationship with Kalus and, without doubt, that moment when Qill confronted her. Kim and Tom both did such amazing work in that. I think that if Nova hadn't been 'caught' like that, she may well have done more to help Starbane early on (particularly since he's working on an alliance with Vortinsaar, and her interest in planar magic might have been suddenly valuable) - but her grief at losing Qill's trust broke through the initial confusion. Fully agree with Kim that it was perfect representation of Nova's arrogance, thinking that she could outsmart Starbane - and the disastrous consequences that came from destroying the ILS rattled her so much.
    - Qill being captured by Xarkira was another favourite moment. She was, without doubt, the greatest villain of the show. I fully supported the decision (such as it was) not to kill the Mindflayer, ensuring that Xarkira saw the vision - it was one of those pivotal moments that changed the course of the entire campaign.
    - Mark, you are an incredible DM. I would be honoured to have you kill my beloved character (honestly, I think you would have been kinder and more supportive than my actual DM was). Your world building is stunning, particularly the depth of your NPCs. The trust between everyone in your team is incredible. Not to mention, a beautiful LGBT-friendly world, including role-playing the growing relationship between Nova and Thalia.
    I didn't know any of you at the start of this. Now I love you all. Especially Rhiannon's out-of-control laughter in so many places. And Kim's notebooks. Probably you won't see this, but thank you. I don't know what to do with my spare 4 hours each day, now... except maybe to see what this Lightfall stuff is all about.
    PS. I made it through the finale without crying. Then heard the weather for tomorrow will be "clear skies" and I was gone. XOXOGossipBird.

    For Dead Reckoning, or, more accurately, the next evil spin off like it, I think the party being established friends with previous successful missions together would help justify why the party directs all their shitty evil tendencies outwards, not internally.

    Injury system idea.
    When you go down 1st failed death save you get disadvantage on ability checks, attacks and saves on the turn you get up.
    2nd fail you get an injury point.
    Obviously 3 and your dead.
    But if you get up and go down again every fail, 1st and 2nd would give another injury point (as well as the disadvantage when you get yp for 1 turn)
    If you went down in a fight you roll on a minor injury table.
    If you got x injury points you roll on the major injury table.
    Instead of tables of specific injuries its tables of effects, eg lower movement, less perception, disadvantage on physical stat.
    The player decides how to RP that effect as an i jury.

    15:35 The lowest Con characters being injured most often makes sense. Unfortunate though.
    I had an idea for an injury system based on damage sustained from a single source (wouldn't trigger on psychic damage though).
    25% of target's max health causes a minor injury to one bodypart. Anything that involves that bodypart has a disadvantage. Cured by Lesser Restoration or Long Rest.
    50% of target's max health causes a major injury to one bodypart. The bodypart ceases to function properly. If this is head or torso, the victim is immediately reduced to 0 hitpoints and can't regain hitpoints until it is healed. Cured by Greater Restoration.
    100% of target's max health causes destruction of one bodypart. This can't be torso (major injury instead). If it is head, instant death, plus Raise Dead and Revivify won't work.
    200% of target's max health is instant death, the target cannot be brought back by Revivify or Raise Dead.
    Which bodypart is hit would be rolled, with arms and torso generally having the highest chance, the head having the lowest chance.
    34:50 Having a wild woman named Ayla or something similar is very popular.
    Ayla from Children of the Earth, Ayla from Chrono Trigger (which could reallistically be based on the one from Children of the Earth), Aela the Huntress in Skyrim, Aila from Alfhaim in Aerois
    and Aloy from Horizon 0 Dawn.

    i'm only sad that mark is now going to stay clear of high level fights. all those new mechanics, goals and phases were a great inspiration for my games and i can only hope in future campaigns there will still be some of these incredible climatic encounters.

      High level stuff is my favorite parts in D&D. The absolute grandness and titanic scale is amazing to imagine. It sucks that it’s tough on DMs to do higher level content because of how the system is

    I think a fun idea for injuries I've heard before, but have yet to use, is allowing players to take on injuries in order to mitigate something else. For example, if a player sees a really big Crit is about to hit them, they can take an injury to take normal damage, but now they have the injury. In the world of the game, they basically took the same amount of damage, but now the players have agency over what that looks like.
    Edit: There's tons of ways to do this, that was one idea, another would be to let a player just halve the damage of anything for an injury. But also, something that applies to most of these injury systems is that they just don't work well with things outside of physical injuries.

    when a character takes a crit they can decide to take the extra damage, or take an injury?
    3 injury tables based on tiers of the damaged dealt 1-10 t1, 11-20, t2 30+ t3

    SPOILERS FOR AEROIS ENDING BELOW
    I just wanna thank these goofballs for making me teary-eyed again for the first time after the campaign ended. Just like ten minutes in and you mention Kira's boss fight when Quill died and I'm on the verge of tears again. I was SO shaken at that moment. Nothing else in the entire world makes me cry easily and I mean it, but your silly asses always get me. I don't have teary eyes syndrome but this campaign specifically found me during such a dark moment of pandemics, isolation and suicidal thoughts, ripped my heart out, fixed it and put it back in its place. I will always come to tears when remembering so many sweet and gut-wrenching moments spent with you.
    Also you single handedly taught me to comprehend spoken English, taking me from comprehending like 5% of speech to near 100%. Thanks to you alone I can understand almost all of spoken word English-language media.
    I'm not through with the Q&A yet but I felt the need to just come and say this before plunging deeper into tears. Thank you thank you thank you ❤ Clear skies 🫡

      @@captainslender12 ikr? It's quite weird, even more bc they're British and that's not the accent I'm used to in the media. But yeah, somehow I learned from them. I had a good grasp (not excellent, like 70%) on grammar and written language and that probably was a good starting place, but never once did any collection of media (games, movies, songs) help me like listening to these weirdos did. The start was rough, I couldn't listen to the podcast, I had to have visual cues to understand. I remember exactly the day I listened to the first episode on Spotify and was like "who the hell is saying what and what the hell are they saying" lmao but yeah turns out everything *does* come with practice

    Holy wow, only 4-6 hours per week and you consider yourself a big prepper? Teach me your secrets! I'm closer to 10-12 hours using largely pre-written campaigns.

    So many high points during these 5 years! I do think the viewer experience would have been better if rhe campaign had been streamlined to 3-4 years though, it felt a bit to slow-paced at times. I wonder what their time plan is for next campaign :)

      I would assume it's more of a passion project, but I say that without any basis.
      I think Katie works in advertising??
      Trott is obviously with HAT Films.
      Tom I think is an editor/podcast editor for the Yogscast.
      Kim... might also still be with the Yogscast? I'm not quite certain at this point.
      I'm honestly not sure at all about Rhi either, but I know her husband also is a member of HAT films.

    I had the absolute pleasure of finding High Rollers quite late. Only at the start of 2022... i do a lot of painting for work and the Aeoris campaign has been my go to for passing the time while im painting, I've been so absorbed... I've laughed out loud, I've sobbed quietly, I've trembled with joy and excitement.
    Thankyou guys. Its been amazing. I am however massively missing a huge section of my working life so if you could get a shuffle on and get something else going asap thanks 😛😉🤍👏👏👏
