I put one on my 93 ranger about five years ago. Its just a basic flatbed on it though. Its awesome to see someone else build one out of wood.

I used 3 inch square tubing as a frame with 4 inch wide wooden decking. Then i found a 45 degree fuel filler pipe, flush mount fuel filler cap (for a boat) and a cheap breather filter for the fuel tank.

Thanks for posting this. I've been wanting to do something like this with my '83, and you're right - nobody seems to do this kind of build with Rangers. Which is a shame, because it's a good look.

Hey dude, good job and thanks for sharing this on UA-cam. Finally someone built a wooden flatbed with wheel wells, I hate when they make a completely flat one and build it too tall. Put part 2 out please!

Thank you for the comment man! I've always felt the same way about really tall and really flat beds that just aren't aesthetic to me! I've been poking around at doing part two but will get started on it much quicker now!

Whats the point of a flatbed with wheel wells? It just takes away space.

Did you use pressure-treated wood? Did you build an access port to get to the gas tank?

the reason why people don't do wooden flat bed is that wood shrinks over time and its heavier

  • @jeh4138

I looked at old clothes dryer tubs from scrap dryers as fenders. Not wood, but it is an option. Most are quite a bit larger diameter than an oil drum. They are relatively strong and I noticed that some had bolted on "paddles" or whatever the things inside are called that push the clothes around the drum.
    Just unbolt them.

Pretty cool. I'm in the process of building a wood flatbed for my duramax. I torched the wood and stained it heavy with deck stain.

My cousin did something similar to this. It looked great, but one issue was it kept water in the frame and caused more rot than normal. Something to consider for the rest of you

Hey, how has the bed held up over the last 5 years? I just built one now everyone is telling me that a wood bed will just fall apart going down the highway! I know better but I’m interested in hearing what if any problems arise over the long term. Thanks

@@ZanyBuildCo the frame is treated lumber, I floored it with 10”w X 1 1\4” aluminum planks that are used on semi trailers. I did seal the frame with a good quality barn an fence paint. I put strips of 3/4” thick rubber mat between the bed frame and truck frame rails to allow for frame flex. I’ll watch for the video!
