Nothing more fun than working on old car or truck back in little garage or outside it in a grassy area under an old tree with no one around to bother you.
This is the last year for the bed on my 2002 Dodge Ram. I've been watching different videos and even got to see one today up close and personal. I believe I will sand and repaint the frame while I'm at it. Nice job and nice video.
@@meridethmade100 I plan on doing this to my 98. F-150 also a long bed. If you're not going to talk in the video this is definitely the way to do it ! Everything was very self-explanatory. Did you come across any hiccups along the way that may help me out? Keep up the good work Buddy
ryito1122334455 just always be aware of we’re the sparks are flying lol. I was carful not to have sparks hitting the gas tank while cutting. Other then that take your time and have fun with it!!!
Getting those boards on the bed perfectly straight can be a pain in the ass. It's easiest if you've got a straight reference, like a chalk line on the first board. Then you make your way down the board with your screws, adjusting for bows in the wood as you go. Then you can measure the gap for the rest of your boards, or just eye it.
Thanks for sharing, I am in the process of doing just that and have an issue with the fuel filler neck. Not sure if I should lift the bed higher or run the neck through the flatbed portion and out the wall.
It actually turned out great for the way I use it, only thing I would add is a place to store the spare tire, other then that I’m really happy with it !
Hi I really like the way you made it, I want to do mine the same, but I’m wondering what did you use the square box Steele for ? And what wood did you use for the deck, I’m thinking yellow pine is ok stained? Thanks for the inspiration
Nice backyard project, next time just do a little math and make all the boards the same width, cut them all down instead of only cutting the last 2 boards you installed. That left you with a 1” noddle board that screams I fucked up lol
Usually you leave a gap because wood swells and shrinks with different temperatures. If they were too close together, they could break the fasteners, possibly cause other damages
Is it okay to make the truck bed longer than the hitch? I don’t plan on using is trying to get a little more length I don’t know if there is a code for that or not
If you are going to make the bed longer and use wood I would suggest no longer then maybe 2 feet and I would use 2x6 length wise from cab running backwards then notch 4x4 with the 4x6 as cross braces use 2x for the top decking beware this will be heavy might have to redo springs but built this way has worked for years on the farm
@@mattmadison4731 hey you seem pretty knowledgeable about it , you think this design with the 4x4 beams can hold up to 3000lb of weight on the bed? Any experience?
What species of wood did you use and were there any corrosion issues where the wood sat on the truck frame? A lot of internet chatter about both PT and white oak being corrosive to the truck frame.
Yea I am very curious about that too. What if you use a galvanized steel small plate or something where the beam touches the body. You think that could prevent it ?

Everyone should try it

Definitely gonna toss this one in the saved folder...bout to drop the rusty bed off my 86 and build something like this. Nice work bud!
I got a rusty bed on an 87 F250. I can punch a hole through the bed itself
Cool, I would have made it one board wider .

cool idea im gonna use some of your moves bro
Awesome content. Keep it up man!
Bryan Cheesman thanks man!
good job bro. made it with basic tools.
A darn good job my man (-:
Love it can you tell sizes of wood used please
I have watched life flash before my very own eyes
Great build Brother! I was just wondering if there is anything you would do differently.

SPARE TIRE GOES BEHIND STEERING WHEEL IN EVERY VEHICLE I HAVE EVER OWNED.
@@jimherman859 I see what you did there.

The steel was used as a spacer , the frame isn’t flat so the front had to be spaced up so all the boards set evenly. The wood is just tested pine .
@@meridethmade100 great thanks so much for reply
Nice job
And he use a black and decker nice
How is it holding up 3 years later?

Any issues when fueling it? I know thats a common problem with flatbed builds.
Nope no issues so far!
Why put such a large space in between the pieces of wood. Why not but them tightly together

The bed is not wide enough.
I'm doing this with my 08 250 cuz the bed is shit. Thanks for making the video. I

@@Nimesh222 I ended up cutting some rubber scraps (old inner tube) to lay on the frame between them
