- In a time of social unrest and crimes against humanity, you'd expect celebrities - those with large followings, influence, wealth, resources, and fame to speak out against it, especially when their own government is backing the regime, but instead many key players have decided to stay silent or apathetic. Selena Gomez even recently said 'a post won't change the world.'
While other celebrities like Melissa Barrera and Bella Hadid have supported Palestine and the people of Gaza, unafraid of what it will do to do their careers.
In this video I delve into reasons why celebrities choose to stay silent in the name of injustice and pick and choose when they do have 'influence', and how by being ambivalent to their actions, we're actually just helping them to feel comfortable in their complicity.

I'm not entirely disagreeing. But I think it's worth remembering that there's a lot of steps in between proposing bills and making real change. We saw a lot of performative bills and actions in 2020 but, despite all the present gaslighting, police were never de-funded or even significantly reformed in almost any major city or country. When you focus on major changes celebrities do in fact have quite limited power. Firstly because, by dint of being celebrities 99.9% of them will not challenge the power structure in meaningful ways e.g. how many of them actually put their money where their mouth is and fund truly radical groups that are pressuring for things like de-fund the police. And secondly, because the power structure is just too good at making superficial changes to make people think they're listening when they aren't. When the bills celebrities push for do things like return the country to the old school antitrust laws for every major monopoly, or if they're actually creating major changes in labour relations or the structure of society, then I think you'll see real power. Me too is probably the only recent example I can think of where there was a real sea change in terms of where companies put their resources.

@@werecookie I live in the damn city that it happened. Tickets for fun was atrociously criminal? For sure, they're scum, they had fcking metal floors installed knowing it would be 40°C heat and cut off mechanical air circulation for God's sake, but to tell me Taylor's team didn't know about the structure and the climate is just laughable. They have a say on every aspect of the Tour, but let's say they magically didn't know. DOZENS of people were already fainting during Sabrina's opening. The concert should have been cancelled right there at that point. There wasn't even enough medical aid to all the people fainting. No matter how many water bottles Taylor asked for the fans, it was not enough for everybody, also the water was hot. Ana was near the stage after all, and this fact didn't help her whatsoever!!! I strongly suggest you stop denying evidence. Taylor doesn't care, she actively denied it happening during the concert in her "letter" instagram post (which the authorities confirmed it DID happen during the show, after the second song of Taylor) just to avoid legal problems. There are actual WITNESSES but Taylor said it happened BEFORE the concert. Ana wasn't even from Rio, she and her friend paid almost 5k to get there. It was her dream to see Taylor live. Taylor didn't even help the family to pay for the body to be transported back to her hometoen, the brazilian fans did. No matter what PR stunt Taylor did the next week after that to save her neck, we will never forget, neither will Ana's parents and loved ones.
@@werecookie also we know she postponed the concert on the 18th because of the backlash. It was the day after Ana died. HUNDREDS, if not THOUSANDS of people were ALREADY inside the stage when the news about the postponing were dropped. It caused a lot of chaos afterwards. Inform yourself.

the thing is you can't justify silence anymore imo when it comes to the point when you actually realize how much influence these people have. you literally have millions of people who will hear what you have to say. celebrities don't have to be activists, but just posting a donation link isn't activism, it's just trying to help out.
Posting a donation link is a minor form of activism, and that's okay. I don't like this idea that being an activist is controversial, so celebrities need to be made comfortable with what's asked of them. Especially when they're mega rich and have a cult-like following.
Y'all are expecting celebrities to do the heavy work for you and spoon-feed you where to click, where to vote and for whom. Do you hear how ridiculous this is? C'mon celebrities are not bigger than the news and news networks. When anything major happens most people would've heard about it. That's one. Two. Y'all are grown adults. Go donate yourself, go write letter to congressman yourself. Everything you're asking from a celeb, you can do yourself. What you're basically expecting from them is for them to *organize* this for you. Go reflect on what you just said, taking into point my message. People don't actually need these celebs for activism the way you think you do. In the end, only people interested will be involved. And those who want to be would do so without a celebrity intervention and speaking. Matter of fact - Americans biggest cities are so heavily dense unlike smaller countries - that you can go downtown and set up a stall and you'll draw up enough attention for your favourite cause. And the longer you spend there (days) the more visibility and people you'll reach. What's holding back highly interested in this topic individuals from doing it all themselves? @LovelyLittleLillies The thing that's stopping interested individuals from engaging in all the forms of activism that suit them is time and finances. It's that simple. The vast majority of people need to work on order to even have a place to go back to after canvassing. Canvassing is extremely expensive in the long run, and it was done in the past and today through finals and large scale organization. Most donations don't tend to simply come from other workers in your immediate area. Being sponsored by a wealthy benefactor in a capitalist society goes a long way. It's also disingenuous to ignore that, in America, grassroots movements, especially ones that directly counter capitalist interests, tend to be directly sabotaged by the even more powerful interests they're protesting.
You're engaging in the dumbass "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" mentality that plagues the conservative, reactionary mentality of America as a whole. Celebrities have an exceptional amount of power. It isn't about convincing activists, it's about convincing their millions of followers, as well as utilizing their millions of dollars in capital to help support these grassroots movements. And claiming they neither have a responsibility or even power to do so is just showing how narrow your grasp of politics is. You know how pretty much every single celebrity you know does ads? That is one of the many, many things they're obligated to do to curate an image for themselves and the people that pay them. Making sure that people don't know a company engages in slavery or partially funds a dictator is an expensive campaign. Ads exist, in part, to present an appealing image to a wider audience in order to increase the passivity of the populace towards capitalist endeavors.
Just because you're ignorant about how connected every system under capitalism is doesn't mean people are just being lazy or stupid. You're just not informed. Celebrities are not just popular people.

I know very well the resources average people - especially someone from middle class - has to create movement and change. Because as a marginalized person I used many resources, be it financial or emotional or other, from small charities and spaces created by no one particularly big. They just put in the time to fund rase or seek out financial aid for sustenance wherever they can. And also buying groceries from East European markets and following the conflict in Eastern Europe, I'm well aware of who did what and helped how. Help for Ukrainians came first and foremost from their own people - if you look at refugees at the Mexican border, they were not taken in by some us organization but they managed to get into us by knowing someone (like a relative or friend) there. Then there was Poland - who gave the most help. And who's Poland, if not a neighbour and friend to UA. And at Eastern European local delis they set up donation boxes along with websites that organized donations and help in Ukraine. In the end, most of the help and financial aid came from Ukrainians living abroad and the other biggest help came from a neighboring country that gave temporary shelter. So while that country asked for help from everyone they could - as a westerner, you wouldn't know that North America did very little for Ukraine in aid other than the sanctions. Majority of aid came from fellow slavs.
So if Eastern Europeans can come together, then so can Arabs - which have been helping p a Les tine for a while now.
You just have a very western perspective on this conflict bc in us people think silly little social media posts do anything or comments from celebs are more useful than financial aid for people who are left without homes and food.. to organize financial aid for pal est inians doesn't require a celebrity intervention
It's a statistic that when it comes to charities, most charitable donations are done by the lower classes and not the wealthy. So again, you're misinformed. Most donations for poverty, ex, are done by nobodies. Go look at Value Village - do they have ads and celebrities campaigning? Only public celebrity campaigning is done for organizations that are known for cop most of the money for themselves. So again, you don't need a celeb.
I told you, didn't I - big metropolitan cities in US are so heavily dense that you can supplement a NYC times sq billboard ad by just setting up your own table downtown. Who needs to pay for ads when you got free access? My family used every resource imaginable and available when we were poor, that's how I know you don't need big names just to create organizations that facilitate help in your local community. Idk about where you live, but where I live even big name companies and banks donate annually locally for small local charitable things - you just gotta reach out and apply.
So like I've showed you, I'm much more versed on this matter than you because you clearly have never been involved in any function that was organized and funded nor charitable organizations nor used any financial aid in local communities, like price organizations. You're busy speaking of "I can't" instead of doing something. There's a famous quote out there that will tell you Mu sk (or was it Bez os?) got where he did, and created what he did because he didn't focus his energy on "you can't" and never took a no. People are creating all this fuss online over celebrities all for nothing. It just shows your mentality of waiting in on others and being dependant then to start up things yourself. Oh and I remember a little boy who got famous in 2000's for setting up access to water for Africans simply because he aspired to, and he successfully managed to raise fun in hundred thousands or millions. There are multiple accounts of indigenous people destroying their own land, either via civil war, having an authoritarian regime take power, corrupt politicians or simple industrialization and population growth which is in general pretty harmful to the environment.

Instead of working with Palestinians to achieve the liberation of Palestine, they use their wealth and influence in a paternalistic way to push their own vision of what Palestine should be

Look at Beyonce she stood up for BLM, raises black voices, literally ENCOURAGED focused protesting for BLM and donates to HBCU's. Similar pathways can be taken to show support in Palestine....yet celebrities dont do it including Bey. Of course Beyonce cant single handedly solve police brutality but she can help raise awareness, donate money to the right sources and even skew people's opinion and share knowledgable information to a large amount of people at one time.

I would argue celebrities ARE NOT people. They are people who play a celebrity role. Taylor Swift is a person, but Taylor Swift the celebrity is a brand, an amalgamation of publicists, marketing companies, advisors, etc, etc. No matter what Taylor the person believes privately, Taylor the celebrity can only present as much as the amalgamation can agree on is good for the brand. Celebrities are more-than-people.

Girl, I love your videos, you're probably my favourite youtuber in this area right now. I used to be a really big fan of Taylor Swift, when she came to brazil i travelled the country to watch her live, it was a very chaotic, we were going through a heat wave and a girl died while attending her concert. She said nothing about it, only a short cold note on a Instagram story, she didn't pay her any homage at the concert, didn't even say her name, and her family had to go to national tv begging for the fans to help transport her body back to where she was from, there's no proof Swift did anything but invite her family to another concert. Her fans worldwide seems to ignore this has happened, and makes me think if it was an american or even european fan it would have the same silence, silence from her, her team, the media, it just seems like our lives don't matter, the 3rd world lives are just not as important as americans. I used to think Taylor was a decent human being till that day, then i realized she probably doesn't care, when she talked about american elections was because maybe she thought it was safe enough for her to get envolved in this subject, would cause more good than harm or maybe because she cares about american politics, but what happens in the rest of the world? I don't think she gives a damn, and that was very sad to realize because I loved her and she said in her documentary that she wanted to take part in politics more often and she wanted to be in the right side of history. hey! i am not from brazil nor have i ever been close to going to see her live, but i definitely agree with everything you said. when i learned about the story of the poor girl who died, i was absolutely disgusted by how she handled the situation : the videos of her singing « bigger than the whole sky » in homage or whatever were very unsettling for me to watch because people were singing along as if the whole situation was yet again about her, not about a poor girl who lost her life because of bad management AT HER CONCERT, i couldn’t understand how she managed to victimize herself when she was (even if its indirectly) responsible for the loss of a life cause after all it’s HER show !! i found that very disturbing and one life is already a big loss but no one cared so how would you expect these delusional and heartless people to feel bad about tens of thousands of innocent people getting killed ?? i too used to love her a lot but it’s all changed and even though we may not have enough power to voice our morals with significant impact because she’ll always have obsessive fans who only breathe for her music, we can still boycott and stop supporting her, so that if no matter what happens we can say that we stood on the right side!!

The whole conversation about Palestine and Israel is happening because a foreign power (Israel) is attacking Palestine and enacting a genocide on the people. That makes it an international conflict, and thus creates conversation around the world.
At the same time, Sudan and Congo have internal civil wars, that kind of makes it their problem to solve, right?

Let me explain nationalism to you, because you clearly don't get it.
In nationalism, the borders of the state coincide with the borders of the nation. Meaning that wherever the population is in its majority of one nation, that land belongs to that nation.
So tell me again, how does that principal work with Israel and Palestine? Was the majority of people living there Israelis? No, they were Arabs. So, it is therefore rightfully Arabic land.
I understand but they are getting some great coverage on socials where it starts and of course we can do more. I think Palestine right now has gotten the most because it has happened for over 70 years at this point and they don't even have a country of their own at the moment and are being pushed out their own land by someone else. Their population has also decreased drastically. In a perfect world all three would be getting huge coverage but at the moment it's hard to get people and celebs to care about Palestine which is truly heartbreaking. We already having boycotts, posting, and outraging and its still happening.

She only speaks on issues to capitalize on them and make her look good. She showed a very LGBTQ+ front during her lover era but has remained incredibly silent since even tho there have been some pretty controversial bills passed regarding the LGBTQ community to further marginalize them

I realized this about her when she released “You Need to Calm Down.” Everyone praised her like she did something revolutionary but it made me angry. That song is not going to help ANYONE, it’s just going to make the LGBT+ community look like an even bigger joke.
I do feel that the kind of people who would do the right thing in these situations would mostly be excluded from these industries before they became big and influential. I agree that it's a moral obligation to stand in support of Palestine, but I simply don't see celebrities as moral models in any way. We should see them as the funny corporate toys they (more often than not) are. The fight is happening far away from social media accounts and movie studios. Power, i.e., the potential for change, rests in the hands of the workers and soldiers who are either blocking supplies to Israel or fighting to defend the Palestinian people.

i understand the frustration, and the fantasy of having big influential people sway the stance of politicians. when they did the Live Aid broadcast fundraiser in 1985, they raised a ton of money for the famine in ethiopia. if they can do it back then, why not now? but instead of raising money, urge people to write to their representatives. the answer is, it’s easier to raise money but how that money is managed is out of our control and almost futile. politics will always make people wary, because the established powers that be are firm with their stand. artists are human too and are beholden to their industry which sadly is pro-Israel and can’t fathom the idea that supporting Palestine doesn’t mean you’re antisemitic. the only thing we can do is do our part. but thank you for contributing to the discourse, cheyenne. always love listening to your takes.
The matter of whether or not celebrities should speak out about these issues was never a debate in the past. Many of the artists that they look up to were holding benefit concerts for resistance groups, mobilising and joining protests.
I’m South African, many of our musicians during the apartheid era would release songs that were anti-apartheid and they were widely popular and used their gifts to spread the message of freedom. They drew more attention to the issue locally and internationally and were often jailed, exiled or had their music banned.
Cultural boycotts matter!
I think I'm too far removed from celebrity/influencer culture to have any meaningful input. In the same way that ads on YT just make me never want to buy those products, celebrity endorsements of anything (be it products or causes) only serve to increase my skepticism of said thing.
I don't get my news from them and I don't believe they're better informed than me just because they have millions of dollars (in fact, much like you said, they're probably NOT as well informed as me due to the detached nature of their existence)

I agree with what you said completely. On one hand I understand why people want celebrities to take stands because fans would be pointed onto an issue. However, I think that in itself is a problem. Because how is it that people depend on celebrities to know what is going on in the world. People need to inform themselves regardless of what celebrities think or do. I don't know how to explain it but I don't put that expectation on celebrities because I inform myself on issues and make my stance on what info i got. I am a fan of taylor swift but I don't expect her to speak out on things because shes famous. I do think a lot of these celebrities are probably being aggressively told by their PR to not even hint at their stance on the situation, regardless of how they actually feel. People like Selena Gomez and Dua Lipa that are signing the letter but otherwise remaining silent at the least give me that vibe -- that they care but are being told not to speak out publicly by some sort of manager or agent. I know I saw Dua Lipa get bad press about what her stance *might* be (based on nothing but her family being Muslim from what I could see) without even saying a word.

Tbh, I’m annoyed how much trust people place in celebrities for activist causes. They are influential, but people also vastly overestimate their power. Taylor Swift has previously endorsed political candidates who didn’t win, she’s not going to stop fighting in Gaza. It’s easier to be an activist for feminism and LGBT rights because they can relate to these personally. And the average American barely has a grip on domestic politics. Most of us can’t even find Palestine or Israel on a map. I don’t expect celebrities to do better than the average American. Ultimately, nobody owes you their activism. I’m not saying this to defend their inaction. I wish they would speak out. But I’m just being real and urging we spend less energy on this. Sure we can continue to pressure celebrities but it’s more important to pressure politicians and reach out to our friends and community, spheres we actually have influence over, than try to make heroes out of entertainers. Celebrities will not do the work for us.

we should be pressuring politicians but what's one way to build pressure on them? to build more support for and awareness about your cause so you can get people to mobilize. who can possibly help with that bc of their insanely large platforms, reach and influence? celebrities. you can argue till you're blue in the face about how yes most of the energy shouldn't be directed towards them (and it isn't by most activists!) but these criticisms are fair and valid and it's important to have a conversation about how those we keep giving so much power, money and influence show so little humanity at times and what it says about our culture as a whole and the need to transform it.

In principle I don't want to contradict; on the other hand, every person - even a prominent multi-millionaire - has the right not to share their point of view with millions of others. And if you're honest... How much knowledge can such people have about such sensitive topics? With this in mind, I personally prefer it if they say nothing at all.

Being a celebrity brings a lot of sway with it, but it's better to be indirect with it, to show people to good causes they can help, rather than run them yourself. Unfortunately, this word is "influence" but the message still holds.
i cannot express how glad and thankful i am that you made this video ! first of all the fact that you were able to give context, summarize the genocide of palestinians by israel, highlighting important elements in just a few minutes is incredible : there are so many sources online, quick to read and understand for pretty much everyone but some people apparently are not able to do the bare minimum of educating themselves and sharing information. for the past four months i've seen so many of my favorite artists and content creators do : NOTHING. i've seen so many of my friends do nothing. i know i should put my energy else where (and i do so, by sharing information on social media despite my very small number of followers) but this makes me so angry and sad, i just can't understand how some people can literally just sit here and stay silent and not lift a finger while a genocide is happening (and so many other crisis and issues in the world).
(kinda using this comment as a diary here sorry but i need to vent) tbh i've been very conflicted the past few months because on the one hand i want to radically change my media consumption and only listen to or watch people who do try to do something (the bare minimum at least) (i am definitely learning to not put my favorite artists on pedestal like i used to); and on the other hand i still kinda turn a blind on some artists who haven't spoken up because tbh it would disrupt my comfort as well (a part of me still waits for something or wants to believe they have a good "excuse" for not speaking up even though there's really no justification at this point). same for my friends, i've been thinking about reducing my circle to only keep friends who have showed interest in various national and international issues and cutting ties with the ones who have stayed silent all this time ; i'm honestly afraid of doing that once again because it would be a radical change for me and my comfort but at the same time my friends' silence has also been something that has angered me and made me upset so idk what to do. if anyone reading this has been through a similar situation, i would love to know your perspective on that !

@@annemxma hey!! it’s not my video or my comment section but i still wanna say you don’t have to apologise for the length of your comment 🫶🏻 your words really resonated with me and i am going through the same situation as you, meaning that i want to change my media consumption radically and stop supporting anyone who doesn’t share my morals or values especially about a subject that is so heartbreaking and awful: it’s a genocide not a trend or scandal, how crazy is that ?? but yea i’ve been struggling as well and sometimes choosing to ignore my moral compass and listen to music (taylor’s for instance) or watch content because just looking at our brain chemistry it’s not easy to cut off habits like these especially if we have emotional attachment to them or they remind us of fond memories, however, i can tell you that going out of your comfort zone will not kill you or change your life drastically, if you put all your heart into setting these boundaries you will find yourself naturally growing out or it ! i genuinely stopped liking taylor’s music and its been sounding like trash to me even though i used to looove her and only listen to her because it’s been established in my mind that she is not a person that i want to support and when i stopped altogether i felt so much better and i started listening to a whole other genre and local artists of my community, don’t worry about feeling bad, celebrities only have the power we give them over us and you can take it back anytime !! you might think its just a stream or whatever, but it’s all about core principles and values even though we may not be powerful enough to change the world we have a say over who we support and give our time and money to and it sure as hell shouldn’t be people who choose not to take sides and spread awareness about a genocide.

my thing is, I feel like celebrities are quite in tuned with the world around as they maintain their image while knowing what to say and what not to say but what is confusing is if they are in tuned and they are seeing the same horrors as us, as a human who is seeing what other humans are going through, you dont want to say anything? Like nothing at all? I dont really expect much from celebrities cause it very disappointing but you dont want to say where you stand? I also wish celebrities group together and did something against an industry that seems so against celebrities speaking for themselves and their views, if that makes sense.

Before even seeing the video I do think a post can change the “world” specifically I refer to the posts the former president of the US would pull of course it changed a lot of dynamics between the public . Influencers/celebrities have more power than they think they do . A counterpoint, in my mind, against that screenshot on Lady Gaga's subreddit/forum at 7:28, was that Lady GaGa and other famous people have strings or connections related to some political party. If their political views align with helping push a ceasefire in Gaza, they can do that! The most a non-famous person can do now is get word out and talk to politicians advocating for ceasefires! Famous or not, you can definitely put in the energy, time and money (what the average person could possibly afford, not accounting the wealthy) into calling a ceasefire and refuge for Palestinean/Gaza people. Even if posts on Instagram equate the same to the black photo image during the BLM movement, it certainly got the word out, and you knew who you aligned with.
Honestly, I think any form of help is good even if it comes from vanity. As long as they do something right instead of looking away, I don't really care for the reasons behind it

What's happening in Israel isn't the worst thing happening in 2023-2024. Since 2011 and 2014, Arabs had been killing themselves in Syria and Yemen more than people died in thr Palestine affair since 1948. I'm part of the crowd who says celebrities don't have to speak up. Especially for such a nuanced and complex topic like Israel-Palestina.
Not everyone is able to properly understand it.
Like I definitely understand why they should speak out and it does make me question them as people if they don't, but I also understand it. Personally I've decided to step out of the discussion for the larger part because it would be to the detriment of my mental health to partake in it. I know this is really ignorant and privileged but I just can't afford going into a depressive episode. I'm siding with Palestina because I learned about the issue in general before the war broke out but concerning what's going on rn? I have no idea what's happening.
And I also question the audacity some people have, requesting celebrities or even regular "influencers" to speak out about the war.
I follow a food content creator and her comments are filled with people getting angry and insulting her because she hasn't said anything yet. But she's barely 18 or 19 years old and just finished school last year. And she makes food recipes!! I don't think it's her place to say anything unless she wants to.
Hell, even then. Nowadays people are required to have an opinion on everything and I don't think that's healthy. Sometimes it's just better to shut up if you aren't propels equipped to do so.

Influencer are people. I don’t think everyone is « required » to have an opinion but as a human being you form opinions same as any influencer.
I don’t know enough is an opinion. I’m scared to say the wrong thing those are all opinions. Obviously getting harassed in your comments for a comment on Palestine can be daunting and intimidating but it is a response to having cultivated a group of people in a particular space. Palestine is an issue that people are talking about everywhere because of the immediacy of the issue. The biggest ask Palestinians have had for pro-Palestinians has been to speak up for Palestine and not let them die silently.
It can be very difficult to manage your own mental health while bad things are happening but things are happening regardless. As an update on what has happened is that a couple weeks ago the ICJ ruled that South Africa’s case was plausibly genocide (which is as much as they can say really) with near unanimous vote and then Canada, USA, Britain France and some other countries took away UNRWA funding. UNRWA was formed because of the nakba and is the biggest aid organization in Palestine, functioning as essentially a government in gaza. Subsequently on Sunday they started a land invasion and bombing Rafa the place that Israel told Palestinians to move to to be safe.
Celebrities are human beings as I said and they live in community with us as our equals. If I can ask my roommate or my teachers or my parents or my friends if they think genocide is bad. Cause that’s really all people are expecting. Then as fellow people I can ask celebrities. It is their choice to respond. It is my choice to ask.

I have my opinions on the war and they are uninformed opinions, which is fine! because that isn't my job . if a celebrity voices an uninformed decision though.... that's plainly dangerous. they are influential people and thus they should carefully consider their words.
Also, the part of "bad things are happening anyway" is exactly what keeps me away from the topic. I feel helpless knowing I can't do anything, that I can't change it. And it's not like this is the only bad thing happening in the world. Knowing about even a little bit - like your update - is crushing. It's true that celebrities have the power to change things, but let's keep in mind that their interests aren't the same as ours! Taylor Swift, for example, is a Billionaire. She causes huge environmental harm with her god damm private jet. If she started actively making politics it wouldn't be to our benefit.
