About the fingers vs pick thing on bass As a bass player, I think there is some very good benefits to both styles, but its hard to pin down which one is better. For metal obviously you think the aggressive sound of pick would be better but then you remember people like Steve harris, Cliff, and even Steve diGiorgio in some capacity. Just shows that if youre original enough, you can make it work in any way you desire
harris gets that sound because he doesn't anchor his thumb to anything. his hand just sort of floats, and he smashes the strings against the fretboard.
I also want to add that solo part on seek destroy, came right from the band Saxon. That part where there's a ref, then a little solo part, then a rif again, is something saxon would do go listen to the solo for princess of the night.
Clifford had the musical genius and neoclassical training that made Lightning and Puppets arguably the best metal albums of all time. Hi Scott! In fact, I think that Cliff contributed much more than the songs in which he signs credit. I still believe that «...And Justice for all» was composed to a large degree from the loose annotations of the famous notebook Cliff left -and can be seen in the disjointed and less complexly articulated songs regarding «Ride...» and «Master...», even "Kill'em all"-... After which Metallica was just a commercial American rock band (damn Bob Rock), with no real musical innovation. As for the bass player issue, for me Newsted was just wasted time, and not only in terms of instrumental technique... Obviously, Trujillo is a good fit in Metallica, but perhaps he arrived with many routines already established in the band -or, rather, I must say in that some kind of monster. Thanx, Scott; I love your way of analyzing music combining solid theoretical knowledge with just pure feeling 🎸🎵🎶
I’m in the minority, but I never got into Metallica after Cliff died. First 3 albums i obsessed over. I bought AJFA when it came out, and it’s good-but just wasn’t the same. I still respect the hell out of their art. It just hit differently without his influence.
Well yeah considering master and ride the lightning had him on it. Bass playing it wasnt that he brought in that composer atmospheric feel to production.
Cliff is my favorite Metallica bass player, maybe Trujillo is a better technical player than Jason or Cliff. Cliff was the best musician in the band and contributed more to their compositions than most people will ever realize. Cliff wrote most of the early acoustic intros and he would figure out the harmonies if Kirk and James’ wanted to play a harmony line in a song, Kirk said Cliff saved them hours of figuring it out on their own. Jason was a great spokesman and mascot when he was in the band. Trujillo is an awesome player but I don’t think he plays up to his potential in Metallica. Cliff was the only one with any music theory back then, and he also put very interesting stuff in the first three albums if you can listen on a stereo you can hear what he was doing, he was a busy boy and way ahead of his time as far as metal bassist goes. Love James’ bolt on Electra Flying V, Kirk’s is a “real” Gibson and when Cliff didn’t have his Rickenbacker he played an Aria, they used what they could afford. David Elefson is the best thrash bassist that uses a pick and it ain’t even close, but I prefer Metallica with a bassist using his fingers to me it’s one of the defining differences between Metallica and Megadeth the approach of the bassist.
The Zakk Wild vs.Randy Rhodes guitar battle. Ozzy: "Zakk Wild is now as good at guitar as Randy annnnnd..... Hit em' the saxophone solo now Randy!" Randy Rhodes: (Proceeds to play soulful saxophone music. And has one of those really good saxophones from the 40's.) Zakk Wild: (Puts down guitar and goes into fetal position.)
I think Rob is fantastic and is just as good as Cliff. Their styles are just different. However I'm a beginner bass player and know NOTHING of music theory and actual playing. So I might be wrong lol
Metallica was great with cliff, because they used to make better music in the beginning. Plus the real Bass Gods out there are Steve Harris and David Ellefson 🤘🤘🤘
MetallicA was better with Cliff? Yes they were....BUT Seek and Destroy was just superb LIVE with Jason....he was a showman and his vocals were second to none..amazing stage presence.
yeah but metallica sucks since cliff died. the best albums are also in chronological order. i don't know anything about the albums after the black album. if any of them come on the radio i hit the seek button immediately... as in seek and destroy.
the 3 albums with cliff they gained something each album without giving anything up! it was pure forward momentum! ......every album without cliff got progressively worse! Justice of course the first album without cliff they made gains in terms of it being the tightest they ever sounded! that was the peak of james rhythm playing!.....BUT it was the start of their decline in terms of musicality! .......other than "One", which is a great song, and the melodic parts of "to live is to die" which were really beautiful, the hooks just werent there!.....many of the songs sounded the same! ......cliff was the musicality! i respect jason for what he had to put up with and having impossible shoes to fill! but i dont agree with those who say he was such a great fit for metallica!....every live show i see footage of from jasons first few years, i always catch him out of the corner of my eye thinking "who the fuck is that?" .......what i liked about cliffs presence is it was a loose aggressive! ...by loose i mean he was intense but almost relaxed at the same time!.....he kinda held his bass like an extension of his dick! ...almost like a slash quality! ....hed bang his head violently, but seemed effortless at the same time! and seeing him and james beside eachother rocking out is the best thing ever!....... jason was very intense, but it was kindve a stiff intense! ....more of a chest beating intense!.......where cliff would often have a smile on his face, and to me that just feels more confident and baddass.
the "new guy" on bass is easily the best bass player they ever had. cliff was the original, newstead made them tight (they were sloppy as fuck with cliff), but trujillo can play literally anything, from jazz fusion to metal. cliff is my fav, but facts are facts.
Jason and Rob are fantastic in their own right. But, IMO Cliff is what made Metallica special and separated them from other thrash metal bands at the time.
Hi SHRED! 100% Better with Cliff Burton, whit his passing they started to change and after the "Black Album" I stopped caring, because it is not for me. Metallica was a better song writing machine with Cliff. But Jason was every bit as good on stage as Cliff was IMO, and his backing vocals added a TON. But all things considered, YES, Metallica was better off with Cliff.
I like the fingerstyle bass undergirding Metallica’s sound. It’s much deeper and richer. Strange, cos I think Megadeth sounds perfect with a picked bass.
I was at this show! James threw out copies of Kill ‘‘em All at the crowd. Sadly I didn’t score a copy. Man to be 16 again! P Also, someone is out of tune. Kirk I think?
No. Numbers don't lie. Clearly, the "best" Metallica recording is the black album, that makes Jason Newstead the best bass player. The most skilled bass player is Robert Trujillo. That actually makes Cliff Burton the "worst" bass player.

@@smith97320 He bought a lot of influence in that he introduced James to music that broadened his writing style but what I mean is he didn't write very much., Some people will have you believe Dave mustaine and cliff Burton wrote the first 3 albums and it's just not true.
rob rock with the black album is still 10x better than what they are now.
@@smith97320 but rtl is still thrash and still metal and most of all technical.... if you dont' count the drums .. what they are after cliff is well garbage.
Id like to know how Justice would be different with Cliff in the creative room
The intro was heavily inspired by Sucking My Love by Diamond Head
You should check out how low they mixed cliff. You could hear him way better than Jason in and justice for all of course, but when you actually listened to the isolated tracks, you will be shocked at how much you can't hear in the final mix.
Yes but kill ‘em all’s bass is super loud
Cliff Burton would have been better without Metallica.
Cliff only wrote what he got credited for and only wrote the intro and outro to to live is to die on the and justice album
@@deletedhero5579 Any reading comprehension problem?
@@miguelanxomuradolo2638 No I read your theories just fine but it's still nonsense
This song was written before cliff. It was Ron mcgovney. Cliff changed the whole bass structure, but in James' riff writing, it was all him
Happy birthday Cliff!!!
I'll watch a 20 minute video I already know the answer to because Shred is entertaining
Actually Metallica had 4 bassists. Ron McGovney played bass on their demo.
Why is it that they only have Tributes to Cliff then? Hmm, go figure! Cliff was the effing Man!
They were younger, cliff was amazing, Jason was good and Robert doing amazing job .
Can you react rot Apocalyptica + Simone Simmons “Rise again”? 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Yes without question or disrespect to Jason or Rob
The Zakk Wild vs.Randy Rhodes guitar battle.
Ozzy: "Zakk Wild is now as good at guitar as Randy annnnnd.....
Hit em' the saxophone solo now Randy!"
Randy Rhodes: (Proceeds to play soulful saxophone music. And has one of those really good saxophones from the 40's.)
Zakk Wild: (Puts down guitar and goes into fetal position.)
Metallica was way way better with cliff. I think everyone knows this but some are still afraid to admit it. That was a huge loss and that's sad 😎 🎸
you should've reviewed the anesthesia solo from the same show man cmon shred
I think Rob is fantastic and is just as good as Cliff. Their styles are just different. However I'm a beginner bass player and know NOTHING of music theory and actual playing. So I might be wrong lol
I feel like no one gives Robert credit at all obviously Cliff is the best but Robert did and is doing an amazing job
Metallica was great with cliff, because they used to make better music in the beginning. Plus the real Bass Gods out there are Steve Harris and David Ellefson 🤘🤘🤘
I think cliff could have topped both of them if he had more years to prove himself. he is certainly the best composer of the 3.
MetallicA was better with Cliff? Yes they were....BUT Seek and Destroy was just superb LIVE with Jason....he was a showman and his vocals were second to none..amazing stage presence.
I would choose Cliff Burton but all three bass players are awesome
yeah but metallica sucks since cliff died. the best albums are also in chronological order. i don't know anything about the albums after the black album. if any of them come on the radio i hit the seek button immediately... as in seek and destroy.
13:11 the best 😎
the 3 albums with cliff they gained something each album without giving anything up! it was pure forward momentum! ......every album without cliff got progressively worse! Justice of course the first album without cliff they made gains in terms of it being the tightest they ever sounded! that was the peak of james rhythm playing!.....BUT it was the start of their decline in terms of musicality! .......other than "One", which is a great song, and the melodic parts of "to live is to die" which were really beautiful, the hooks just werent there!.....many of the songs sounded the same! ......cliff was the musicality!
i respect jason for what he had to put up with and having impossible shoes to fill! but i dont agree with those who say he was such a great fit for metallica!....every live show i see footage of from jasons first few years, i always catch him out of the corner of my eye thinking "who the fuck is that?" .......what i liked about cliffs presence is it was a loose aggressive! ...by loose i mean he was intense but almost relaxed at the same time!.....he kinda held his bass like an extension of his dick! ...almost like a slash quality! ....hed bang his head violently, but seemed effortless at the same time! and seeing him and james beside eachother rocking out is the best thing ever!.......
jason was very intense, but it was kindve a stiff intense! ....more of a chest beating intense!.......where cliff would often have a smile on his face, and to me that just feels more confident and baddass.
the "new guy" on bass is easily the best bass player they ever had. cliff was the original, newstead made them tight (they were sloppy as fuck with cliff), but trujillo can play literally anything, from jazz fusion to metal. cliff is my fav, but facts are facts.
they weren't sloppy because of cliff though. they were sloppy because well.... you know ... l... a... r.... s....
Jason and Rob are fantastic in their own right. But, IMO Cliff is what made Metallica special and separated them from other thrash metal bands at the time.
CLIFF best bassist, jason made them Even more brutal with his live shows, back up vocals etc, rob dosent fit in IMO.
Yes, metallica was much better with Cliff! Cliff is a legend 🤘 miss cliff😞
Hey shred do a video watching Alice In Chains ! With Layne
Yes but Jason and Robert are still solid bassists. I don't think Metallica utilized Jason's abilities after And Justice for All to be honest.
"metallica has had 3 bassists"
why is everyone always forgetting Ron McGovney
Jason was my favorite, nothing against Rob or Cliff
Hi SHRED! 100% Better with Cliff Burton, whit his passing they started to change and after the "Black Album" I stopped caring, because it is not for me. I love Jason, I think he was awesome and allowed the band to connect to a younger generation, back then, Plus he had the best hair, haha! Trujillo is great and I loved him in Suicidal but find him weird in Metallica. Not that he is not competent, just makes no sense to me. Take care!
Without a doubt! Cliff was the Randy Rhoads of bass players. He also would not have approved of anything after the Justice album!
Why? He was very vocal about Metallica moving away fro. Thrash
@@swampcrypt I know, especially as Cliff wasn't even a huge fan of thrash and wanted the band to take a different route eventually
@@deletedhero5579 yeah he wanted them to become more technical and less of what they currently are... searching for the word.... sh*t
@@psilocybemusashi Not really he liked some progressive stuff, but he envisioned they would mellow out and "work some big name producer one day" he would most likely have been a fan of some of the stoner rock vibe that ended up on Hardwired
Favorite V shape guitarist??
The lineup of James, Kirk, Cliff and Lars was incredible and unmatched but Jason and Rob were the best replacements
Nah man the Mustaine burton lineupwas the best one
Ouch is right!! Kirk has always played loose and sloppy, same with Lars..Watch the 30yr reunion with Mustaine on a couple songs, he really is soo much more precise and in the pocket than they were it was great to watch. Mustaine, the thrash guitar God!!
LOL Dude, Mustaine's solos at that 30th reunion show were total unmelodic slop - Kirk's solos on those songs are much more precise.
The solos Dave played at the reunion were terrible
Unpopular opinion: Metallica was only Metallica with Cliff Burton.
Cliff was the FUEL of Metallica. Mecraptica died when Cliff Died
One pick to a minimum of 5-6+ counting the palm? \m/ Cliff. Robert has filled the gap nicely.
Dave was a good teacher
He taught them nothing so can't be that good
@@deletedhero5579 you're entitled to your opinion Sir or Madame, may peace be upon you
@@triple6wolfi I feel bad now I assumed you were just a Megadeth fan trolling Metallica content! But I cannot argue with such a good natured comment, I reciprocate your gesture and also wish peace upon you Eric.
@@deletedhero5579 no worries. I am a fan of Megadeth, no trolling was intentional however my apologies. I also enjoy Metallica though haha. It's like saying you enjoy rib eye over new York strip. Just my own opinion. They both have excellent riffs and song writing. Thank you again for you kind words
@@triple6wolfi Absolutely! Both fantastic bands with amazing music to enjoy! 😁🤟
Of course Metallica was better with cliff Burton no ?'s no doubt
Imo the notes of the intro are stolen from the second opening riff of the Van Halen song I m the one.
James was clearly buzzed here 😎
Will you react to seek and destroy 1989 Seattle please!
Dont even need to watch the video. Its a hell yeah they were
Yes
short answer - yes
long answer - hell yes.
Mustaine was playing a BC Rich at that time.
Metallica and Eminem IMO both their first 3 albums will always be my favorites
This isn't about Hip-Hop Em stan
Cliff is top 10 metal bassist all-time.
YES Cliff defined the band he was the driver and major influencer brought harmony and classical music theory taught hetfield he made the band what it was losing him they lost part of that and knew it they took it out on Jason unfortunately
In some alternate universe Cliff never died and the band became bigger than The Beatles, Zeppelin and The Stones combined.
In another universe Mustaine stayed in the band (but Cliff still dies) and never stop thrashing.
Which would you prefer?
um cliff living would be best. Metallica may suck since dave left and cliff died but at least we have great material coming out of megadeth still. there isn't a song I will even sit through once since the black album. and seriously i have never listed to a single song since that crap all the way through.
Metallica was a better song writing machine with Cliff. But Jason was every bit as good on stage as Cliff was IMO, and his backing vocals added a TON. But all things considered, YES, Metallica was better off with Cliff.
A different question: Was Cliff BETTER because he was in Metallica?
Ron Mcgovney???
I dont care if the bass player plays with a pick or fingers. Lemmy played with a pic Nuff said 🤘
I like the fingerstyle bass undergirding Metallica’s sound. It’s much deeper and richer. Strange, cos I think Megadeth sounds perfect with a picked bass.
I was at this show! James threw out copies of Kill ‘‘em All at the crowd. Sadly I didn’t score a copy. Man to be 16 again!
P
Also, someone is out of tune. Kirk I think?
poor kirk but he is never going to live up to mustaine.
No. Numbers don't lie. Clearly, the "best" Metallica recording is the black album, that makes Jason Newstead the best bass player.
The most skilled bass player is Robert Trujillo.
That actually makes Cliff Burton the "worst" bass player.
CLIFF EM ALL !!!
🤘❤️🇨🇦
