@@jaredtandle2596 I completely agree with you Jared. He leaves these pauses after a sequence to let the reverberations die out, so in that sense he's playing the hall as much as the instrument. It's Xavier Varnus btw and he really varies the timing beautifully.

Fun fact, this is one of Bach's lesser organ works (it's actually dated as among his juvenilia). It's a very catchy work but once you start delving into Bach's more beefier pieces (such as BWV 582, 543 and 538) the realization of his greatness just comes as a shock.

The Fantasia in g minor is even more extreme than the Toccata. Insane chromaticism, wailing solo lines, and an internal coherence that puts his earlier work in its place. The corresponding fugue is based on an Dutch dance tune, so it really can be made to move.

Love it how the first comment you made was about it being played in the wrong key just by hearing the notes, without trying it out on an instrument yourself, and you were spot on! I read up on the organ this was recorded on and it indeed is tuned one half-tone higher, a1 = 466 Hz so indeed the D comes out as an E flat. Kudos!

Fun fact: It is very likely that Bach DID NOT compose this on organ, but on Bratsche (Viola) or Saitenclavier. I don't know the English word for Saitenclavier...it was THE instrument for organists to practice on. We also know from historical sources that Bach was nothing short of a beast on organ; his improvisation talent was legendary and he was considered the most virtuous organ player of his time, and is often regarded as the best organ player and organ composer of all times. He used his skills to give paid opinions on organs, and Bach was actually feared amongst pipe organ master builders (Orgelbaumeister). There are many reports of his contemporaries, that he often made the master builders sweat like apprentices:
During his infamous paid pipe organ tests, especially when it was a commissioning/inauguration test, he pushed the instrument to its absolute limits, doing things nobody would dare.
His son Carl Philipp Emanuel noted: *The father laughed merrily yet insidiously, and said for fun: "Above all things I must learn whether the organ has got good lungs!" - and to explore this the father pulled on [drew] all sounding registers [stops] and started to play as polyphonically as possible ...and the organ master builders stood in shock and turned pale, but then they heared an effect which left them astonished and deeply impressed.*
Bach was known for his great ability to take a simple melody and quickly improvise it on organ into 4 voices or even 8 voices.
Fan fact 2: Bach took the original composition for Bratsche or Saitenclavier and transposed/rewrote it for pipe organ, playing and creating it on the Arnstadt organ, most likely in 1704-1705, when he was 20 years old.
This is it: The piece played on the organ it was composed hundreds of years earlier: ua-cam.com/video/HrOt-TNujHo/v-deo.html
And here is the piece played on a Baroque organ with Baroque tuning as it was very common during Bach's lifetime: ua-cam.com/video/Nnuq9PXbywA/v-deo.html

Watching a master pipe organist at work is very similar to watching musicians working with the early Moog synths back in the day. So much going on. Your working the keys with your hands, the pedals with your feet and trying to find time to push/pull those levers off to the side and god forbid you don't have a page turner ;-) Not disimilar to having to move patch cables on the fly on a Moog. Also , great analysis of the theory.

Bach, himself, was known to experiment with different tuning systems till he found one that he preferred the most, he was also known to reach in and retune harpsichords to his liking, he came across a tuning system that allowed him to modulate to other keys without having to retune his instruments and he composed two complete books of music, The Well Tempered Clavier and The Well Tempered Clavier II each book covered compositions in every key of the chromatic scale from C to B including all the sharps and flats, this new tuning system was the basis of our current equal-temperament tuning system we use now.

Shred, you rock, thank you for this. I love that you actually read our comments and take our suggestions for videos. This is my favorite piece ever. While I admire Leo's playing, Xaver Varnus gets the win for playing it from memory, no sheet music help whatsoever.

If you've never been in an old stone church with a good organ and a great organist in a sanctuary with good acoustics, I highly recommend it. Don't know how to look for one, exactly, but I grew up in one. That organ could make the room shake.
Very cool of this channel to show the connection between metal rifs and JS Bach.
Very nice of you to play the whole thing through. It made it sort of a reaction video, and I usually don't care for reaction videos. But you made your points and you managed not to step on JS Bach.
Yeah. His études are very evocative and refreshing. I'm like them every bit as much as concertos.

Just found out and suscribed!!! I think Chaconne from the second partita for solo violin is EVEN MORE METAL! Written in 1720 at the death of his wife. Nicht Bach, sondern Meer sollte er heißen!

Getting closer and closer to sell my soul... For me who is trying to get some understanding of theory & be able to play the guitar this is pure gold, reaction, analysis and some playing with explanation in perfect speed. I would love to see this with Wagners Tannhäuser, The Overture. Also love the explanation of all the terminology regarding classical music, the fugue etc. Soon maybe soon u own a soul in Sweden. Thanks for all your work.

i did appreciate the Spinal Tap reference, but also the tremendous analysis of this wonderful piece. Even just watching it in Fantasia as a kid who hadn't gotten into metal yet, i was immediately attracted to the music. there is just this visceral quality about it that i can't explain, but you can just feel it when you're in a big cathedral and the organ is playing this.
you wouldn't expect it from The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, but their organist Richard Elliot does a fantastic performance of this piece, they even transformed the stage of the conference building into a grim and spooky graveyard in a forest vibe with smoke machines and lightning crashes, it's awesome.

Ok. I have to say, I'm not really knowledgable in music theory and history, and metal, and it's my first video from this channel, but I honestly found the intro really captivating, almost as if... Some otherworldly power forced me to keep watching on the video! Maybe I'm just easy to satisfy, but I give you a thumb up for that, and I give like, one thumb up every three months :p.

There were quite a few notable headbangers during that era. Let's not forget Vivald and the Four Seasons, particularly the shred in the Presto of the Summer movement.

Interesting - I’m an organist, and always thought it was metal. Listen to Messiaen or Langlais and you’ll get more closer to modern metal for sure.
As for tuning - baroque tuning would bring “d” closer to a “c#”. Perhaps it is the tuning of this particular organ.

Wonderful! Thanks. This piece works in so many arrangements, from solo keyboard (any type) to string quartet; full orchestra (Stokowski, in 'Fantasia'); solo guitar, harp ... and metal guitar! Other pieces for Full Metal Treatment? Berlioz, in particular the 'tuba mirum' and 'dies irae' from his Requiem. The apocalypse like you've never heard it before! Also part of his 'Symphonie Fantastique', specially the March to the Scaffold. There. The scaffold alone should grab attention!

You know classical music was metal in its earliest form when the pipe organ player starts banging his head to the music

Fun fact: rock and metal came about in large part due to the rise of home organs in American and British households, combined with the influence of delta blues from black musicians from the south moving to northern cities. Many of the OG rock people got their start on the organ/piano, and likely had experience playing this kind of music. You can hear the influence of a lot of classical and romantic repertoire in metal, many bands even borrow or modify licks from classical music. Anyone who's interested in metal should get familiar with classical if you want inspiration (or free material to steal or modify 🤫) Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Liszt are all great sources for inspiration.
