  • One of the most famous results in the FA Cup (and this at a time when the FA Cup meant more than simply giving your second team a run out). This game is best remembered for Ronnie Radford's sublime strike late in the second half and which /forced the game into extra time.
Newcastle were a potent force during this period, with previous year's signing
of Malcolm Macdonald being a notable point (the media had erroneously quoted McDonald as saying he would score ten goals against Hereford). Indeed the commentator on this clip compares Macdonald's fee of £180,000 from Luton against that of Billy Meadows who was signed for £300.
Hereford were playing their football in the Southern League and as such were required to start their cup campaign in the Fourth Qualifying Round stage. They met Newcastle after having beaten Cheltenham Town, King's Lynn and Northampton Town (after two replays). Newcastle being in
the first division meant that this was their first cup game.
This tie was originally played at Newcastle's home of St James Park which had resulted in a surprising 2-2 draw (if anybody can show me footage of this I would be delighted). The replay at Hereford's Edgar Street ground was delayed twice due to poor weather. Somewhere in the region of 15,000
supporters squeezed into the ground with those unable to gain access trying to get vantage point from the trees outside of the ground.
As noted above, Radford equalized after an earlier Macdonald goal. The simple fact of scoring a goal against such overwhelming favourites is amazing enough. But to score such a brilliant goal elevates this moment into folklore. Radford was a part-time footballer and it should be noted that prior to this game he was employed in a roofing job.
The winner comes in extra time and is scored by Ricky George who also achieved fame as being the part-owner of Earth Summit the 1998 Grand National Winner.
Hereford eventually got knocked out of the cup by West Ham, but did manage to get themselves elected to the football league after finishing as runners up in the Southern League.
This is without doubt one of my favourite sporting videos. The fans invading the pitch (a sea of flared trousers and Parker coats), the mixture of disbelief and delight that Radford displays after scoring (does he know where he is running to?), the commentary, the ground, all make this a classic moment in football.
