  • Ok; I know that this video has been uploaded elsewhere and has achieved the not unworthy feat of 6 billion trillion squillion hits, but I wanted my own copy so your going to have to indulge me.
Its not like me to champion what are known as feel good songs. No, for me the miserabilism of Morrissey, Thom Yorke or Peter Hammill is what, errr cheers me up. However this is most definitely the exception to the rule.
I know very little about Men Without Hats (laziness prevents me from browsing their site) other than they are from Canada, the lead singer is called Ivan Doroschuk and the video was filmed in West Kington in Wiltshire. Oh yes, the dwarf is an actor known as Mike Edmonds who has appeared in Flash Gordon, Return of the Jedi (as an Ewok), and Time Bandits (as somebody or something called Og). He also operated Jabba the Hutts tail as well.
I am not entirely sure why I like this song. I am not entirely sure what the song is about, other than encouraging people to dance. The video does not really clear my confusion up. I am not entirely sure why the performers in the film are dressed in attire more akin to that found within a novel by Chaucer. I am not entirely sure why the end of the video flashes fleeting glimpses of nuclear missiles. I am not entirely sure why I adore this song. But I do. The video always brings a smile to my scarred and weathered visage.
Oh, by the way, does anybody know the name of the blonde cavorting alongside Doroschuk and Edmonds?

This video has strong feels of the scenes of pagan rituals from The Wicker Man with its sort of harvest festival / ancient old English traditional ways of promoting a good harvest for the following year.

Seeing as it came out before "Somebody to Shove" by Soul Asylum (released 1992), I have no answer to your confusion. If it had come out AFTER that, then it could have been seen as an answer to the other song, lol. Aside from that part of my comment, I love this song but especially the video and the little person in it:).
