  • This is a simply superlative goal from Micky Walsh of Blackpool against Sunderland. This was a second division fixture from 1975 (for those of you not familiar with anything other than the Premiership, think of the Second Division as akin to the Championship).
This clip has been uploaded previously elsewhere but the quality is not very good.
When viewing this clip don't just concentrate on the final shot, but also look at the way Walsh controls the ball on his chest and turns the defender. As for the goal itself, remember that this was in a time when footballs were much heavier, defenders were able to assail their opponents with more 'vigour' and the grounds more muddy and uneven.
The delight of the fans is apparent as some of them jump the advertising hordings, avoid falling over their flared trousers and start dancing about. For the record, Blackpool won this game 3-2.
Mick Walsh was later to play for Everton, QPR and Porto (incuding a UEFA Cup Final in 1984) and according to Wikipedia is now a football agent. In the interview following the clip he mentions scoring a similar goal against Norwich and I would welcome any directions on where I can find this.
I have enjoyed preparing this clip so much (probably due to my love of football from 1973ish - 1998: this is the perfect antidote to the anodyne sanitised crap that is the Premiership) that I hope to start a series containing goals that I could only dream of scoring. Please note that few if any will come from the Premiership.
Also note that any comments of the type that flourish on other sites with regard to football (you know who you are: you pretend hooligan types who are ever so hard behind the safety of your PC) will be deleted.

Lovely video. For a start, it had to be some shot to beat the legendary Jim Montgomery. But for general 70s aficionados, the ad hoardings are perfect: nothing in Vietnamese, ads for anoraks, bitter and Pontins, and 'The Green', which was presumably Lancashire's version of Manchester's Pink. How delighted we all were, to read reports of matches that had finished just 2 hours earlier!!

So glad you posted this. Without doubt my favourite goal of all time. I love the way you know he's got nothing else on his mind but to score. The camera position helps too, completely behind the ball. You're right, this was before balls were like balloons and the pitches were like ploughed fields. Superb skill and to beat Jimmy Montgomery from that distance had to be special. You've got to love Barry Davis too!
