  • How to build bass drum control and speed using Gary Chaffee’s “Time Functioning Patterns”. This video covers page 11, the first 15 “Fatback Exercises".
This is just the very first page of exercises in an awesome book, can’t recommend it enough and it’s available here:
    amzn.eu/6JSrrfl
Nail these 15 exercises down at slow tempos, playing hi-hat on 8th notes in the first instance, and then gradually increase the tempo to develop control, speed and creativity on the bass drum. Take your time and go for accuracy, not speed at first. Speed will come once you have control over your foot.
If you want to cut my talk-through and just get into demonstrations of the first 15 fatback exercises, go to 9:18.
Have fun, and please let me know if any questions.
    Mike

Pure gold ! Great book, worth the money just for that Fat Back page ! Never had so much fun practising.
Struggling with the triples on the bass drum - I'm guessing stick with it and build up the relevant muscles ?
Vids are great Mike - keep them coming please !

Nice one David - yes the doubles, let alone the triples take serious time to settle in my own experience. Stick with it is dead right, I'm 28 years in and still very much working on it! Basic technique I use (which I think you've probably seen) is here: ua-cam.com/video/UhQM3oHHlM4/v-deo.html
      Cheers!

There are a number of extra displacements that could also be done, I think this exercise is best learnt as a displacement over a single beat which you put together irrespective of the snare on beats 2 and 4, this means you get the syncopations, doubles and triples etc occurring with the snare and kick landing together. I.e you end up with a bossa kick pattern one example, also 2 kicks semiquaver rest on the and then kick on ah, then repeat all the way through the bar. assign all the displacements letter values, then you can practice e.g. aaaa, abaa, abba, abbb, acba, etc etc. This is the method Benny Greb uses which I think is a tad more rigorous.

How do you know so much about drums man!?

Lindsey Martin ha don’t know about that! But have had a lot of experience playing drums over 25 years or so, and just thought it’d be cool to share some of the stuff I’ve learned and what’s helped me develop. Thanks for watching man!

Beautiful explain of this exercise. Just a question, do you have a special app or software to increase the tempo?

Thanks Christianhe! I just use a metronome, or if playing to music I use the Anytune app - anytune.us/. Cheers and thanks for watching!

The app 'figure' by propellerhead (sadly only available on Apple devices I think) is an intuitive midi loop music maker, but I often use it like a more interesting metronome. I program a very simple minimal loop with a 1234 bass line and press play. You can change the voice of the melody, the tempo, the key, mute layers etc. Having the musical element behind it helps you appreciate the change your playing makes to the music, and it is arguably easier to hang on to than a straight metronome. Not a substitute, but can be a nice change :)

Nice advice! I practice fills and tecnic exercises with different method each time. This for explore and give more flow to my groove. Thanks for your advice, it´s a serious good option. Cheers!

Question: on exercise 12, why is the line on the first 16th note not joining the second note? Anyway we call that whole beat as 1e&a, playing the bass for 1 and a. I just can't seem to get my head around it.
Anyway amazing video. Watching this after buying the book based on your suggestion.

Ah cool man! Because that’s how “1 e a” is notated. Videos coming up about notes values and notation very soon! Thanks for watching :)

@@MikeBarnesDrums thanks. Also the page 19, the Hi hat exercises, so for example I play the ostinato on the ride and play the hi hat exercises with my left hand is that how it is? Sorry I'm bothering you, I currently don't have an drum teacher, plus my laptop doesn't have a CD player!

    • @MikeBarnesDrums

@@jusaguy20 For page 19 you play whatever pattern on the ride (probably eighth notes at first) then you play the written hi-hat patterns pedaled with your left foot. That page gets pretty tricky quite quickly! Cheers :)

When you hit the bass drum it kinda sounds like your hitting the rim of the snare

Ever noticed how the great teachers always have crappy sounding snares? Maybe that's their secret awesomeness code.
