Man let's give a compassion award to Chris Rock. Comedians all know how to rip hecklers to shreds verbally and Jada and Will are a VERY target rich environment. Most comedians would have murdered Will on the spot. I suspect Chris sensed that things were in a bad shape mentally with Will and he didn't want to make it worse.

    • @nonyabidness5708

    • @josiahstearns9615
      @josiahstearns9615 2 роки тому +86

That's how I felt as well.
And I know when I read that they think I’m being mean to Jada and thinking insensitively… I’m not
I do recognize, alongside you, that Chris decided not to take a step backwards into immaturity and making it about himself, defending what he said, using the stage as a boxing ring (verbal or physical) attacking Will to make himself look more witty at the moment or retaliate. Chris just kept moving forward.
Even after Will yelled out the first time, Chris tried to smooth things over like "relax, Will"... and then Will repeats it again... and that's when Chris didn't want anymore of this and just resumed moving forward and pushing along because (yes, I'm sure he was uncomfortable) but he didn't want this to escalate any further and just wanted the night to continue with what was actually planned.
But Chris had multiple chances to take more shots at Will - heck, he had the mic. Now eventually the stage guys would have eventually intervened and I'm sure that's part of what Chris was thinking when "he's weighing the consequences"... but it could have been so easy for Chris to just ignore all that for the current moment of going back after Will, verbally - and he didn't.
So yes, I do give Rock a lot of credit... even for a seasoned comedian... "I could..." immediately became ~ *I won't* ~
He came out of that situation a lot better than some could have expected.
I realize that a joke like that could easily have been taken as offensive, such as we saw from Jada’s reaction. But when Chris is up there just making light-hearted remarks - not intending to hit anyone on a personal insult it shouldn’t have been received with such distain by Jada. Chris didn’t mean it personally as if to say ‘your stuck with that disease “haha”. To my knowledge many reports Chris wasn’t even aware.
When your in that room, especially toward the front you just have to realize that you could be part of a joke and roll with the punches… Chris clearly exemplified that notion - literally
Don’t misunderstand me - I realize was alopecia does to a person… and how it affects how they feel about themselves and how it cuts into their self-confidence (as I mention in a comment further below in this thread of how Will could have responded). Plus I feel that with all that money they have Jada could have easily bought an expensive wig. A friend of mine has an autoimmune disorder and she doesn’t have any hair at all… not even eyebrows and she couldn’t even touch the money that Jada and Will have and yet she draws On eyebrows and wears a wig that I didn’t even know about until my wife told me - as it looked so realistic.
But Jada took it way too personal… and all she had to do was look over at Will and change his humorous mood to prompt him to do something irrational. Obviously we don’t know if she said anything to him. But I have a hard time believing that Will needed time to process that Joke… he had the same time as Jada and she immediately switch emotions and Will was still laughing.
The only thing that peaks my interest on Chris’ side is this being the second time that he poked fun at Jada… (2016 Awards “wasn’t invited”) aside from that - he was just carrying on as any comedian during these awards… and from my understanding Rock had a whole list of jokes that he didn’t even touch because of that moment - up till then, he was only doing improv before led into his comedy routine he had planned the night.
But it all went south and we never got a chance to hear them.

I can say this much it was not staged. In a interview on Good morning America the Oscar Producer talked about the whole ordeal. You want to know why Will was not arrested according to the producer, Chris Rock asked him not to do nothing. According to the Oscar producer, Chris did not want a situation made words. He just wanted to get the show done and get passed it so he can go home. The LAPD was already on site. Ready to arrest. Will Smith for battery but Chris asked them not to do anything. The Oscar producer said Chris Rock kept his head while everybody else in the building were losing theirs. The producer pretty much said Chris saved the ceremony by keeping his composure.

It’s crazy the amount of self control Chris has. Not only physically or mentally but also emotionally. Chris rock has ptsd from being bullied and immediately Chris was about to punch him, but immediately said no, then he wanted to get him back with words and mentally stopped himself and then he wanted to explode but emotionally stopped himself and said this was the greatest night in television. Usually when someone, especially with ptsd from being hit by bullies as a kid, gets slapped like that, they either black out and go nuts or just like when the doctor hits your knee and your foot kicks, automatically hits back without even thinking about it. I feel like Will's flip into fight mode wasn't because of a delayed understanding of the joke.. it was triggered by a sense of insecurity as the man in his marriage, and it was purely his masculine fighting to show that he will right here right now prove his fierce fear of his wife not seeing him as 'enough'. If he was secure in the relationship, he would not have needed to go to battle right then physically. There was no immediate physical threat. The threat was, whether or not his wife would approve of his response being satisfactory. If he was secure in his relationship, he would have reassured Jada in a more intimate way.. nothing to prove to anybody else. The way he struts off stage with his smirk, is not just about putting Rock in his place, but also proud of the evidence he has just displayed of how worthy he is of his wife. I think "the smirk" is a combination of personal amusement and social appeasement. As anyone who's publicly broken a taboo could tell you there's a sick momentary thrill from the learning experience of it all, from experiencing people react. Will didn't just attack Chris, he attacked the social norms of every person in that room. While only Chris was physically struck, an attack on societal values is still an attack, and in that moment everyone person in that room became a potential enemy. So there's fear that goes with that slap that he has to manage, since he's entered uncharted territory and anyone can now do anything (which is a precedent he himself just established). Smiling is a socially submissive way of signaling to anyone who might then attack _him_ that even though he just started a fight, he doesn't want to be attacked himself. It's a reflex that gives some people a "nervous smile". The way he holds his head and sort of half-scans the room reinforces that hypothesis; he wants to project confidence, but at the same time he wants to gauge the crowd, but at the same time he doesn't want the crowd to be able to gauge him.

I definitely agree with the fact that we get a sense of satisfaction after carrying out something believed to be justified retribution. However, the rest I fully disagree with other than portraying confidence. Smirking, before or after an altercation like that, is a dominant move. At least from what I've observed. The furthest from submissive or nervous. Almost to show that you're slightly unhinged as an intimidation tactic. He's facing the audience who are the first ones to place immediate judgment or react. He's showing that he didn't regret it and would do it again if anyone stepped to him at that moment. Its why some people chuckle a little menacingly to themselves when they get arrested or are about to get in a fight with someone despite it not being a humorous situation. It's done tongue in cheek for the sole purpose of strutting and asserting dominance over the situation/everyone in the vicinity.

Not to mention, she followed this with embarrassing and shaming him on his own show, going into vivid detail of her affair...all the while, playing the victim. She also showed no concern during the incident at the award ceremony, and laughed joyfully as she watched her husband destroy his career in front of an audience of his peers. Yes... I would like to add one comment about Denzel’s reaction/lack of reaction when Will misinterprets the entire point of Denzel’s words… Will says D told him “ your highest moment is when the Devil comes to get you”… and clearly Denzel was referring to Will’s own inner demons overwhelming him and making him act inappropriately, and Will seems to be misinterpreting Denzel‘s advice to mean that the devil sent Chris rock to ruin the night! I absolutely agree that Will was trying to “recruit” Denzel and imply that he was supportive of Will’s actions, and when the camera pans to Denzel, he keeps his face emotionless and flat to show no response at all. Will' s reaction goes deeper than Jada's hair joke. As he stated in his apology video, there's a history between them. Remember at a previous edition of the Oscars when Jada said that she would boycott the Oscars because there weren' t enough African-American people involved? And Chris called her out by saying that she had not been invited in the first place? Basically calling her a hypocrite.
Then he went on to criticise Will for complaining that he hadn' t received enough prizes for his roles (implying racial discrimination) and Chris suggested that while that probably wasn' t fair, neither was Will earning 20 million dollars for one of his roles.
And yes, Jada's joke was unfortunate, but I think she looks amazing with or without hair, and if you didn' t know about her condition, you'd simply be joking about her sense of style.
Then there's that joke about Bardem who was really directed at Jada being jealous of Will for his career.

The joke was very tame. It was a simple short joke. It wasn't even insulting or anything. In fact, when G.I. Jane came out, Demi Moore was lauded for portraying a strong, powerful woman, and many women were apparently empowered. It could have been worse if Chris Rock compared Jada to say, Uncle Fester from the Addams family or something. Will Smith was even laughing pleasantly about the joke. Then Jada gives him the evil eye and then he turns around and acts as if the joke was the most horrible thing ever and acts as if from the very beginning he didn't appreciate the joke and proceeded to assault Chris Rock!
So you saying that it goes deeper, that is confusing. If Jada didn't signal her displeasure at the tame joke, Will Smith would have continued to laugh and enjoy the moment. It was just a case of, "Hey, stop laughing, I don't like the joke, go do something about it. now!" All of those problems they have with their marriage and life, in general, came out INCIDENTALLY because people just wanted to know more about them due to the Oscar situation. And Will Smith is just using all of it to escape and justify what he did to Chris Rock

She looks so rad.
In the movie, when GI Jane shaves her hair off is a massive moment in the movie - a turning point. She is going to be a Navy Seal no matter what and no special treatment about being a woman is going to stand in her way. It is really a rad moment in the movie.
I saw a conversation with a commentator in the UK this morning talking about this Will Smith incident. She also has the same disease as Will Smith’s wife and she said she covers the missing areas with hair attachments. She said it is very stressful and hard to deal with as a woman….

Will is just a typical person who voice his emotion in a situation he didn’t like ..questions was how to do it..yeah it may look like he is protecting Jada..but to protect her properly is to go up personally to rock at a another time and talk to him and voice his concern privately ..this way no one will know except those three what was talked about hence Jada privacy and her lifestyle is kept intimate ..instead Will chose what he thinks was the manly way of protecting her in is twisted mind to approach Rock and to show others in front that he is a real man protecting Jada by assaulting the person who made Jada feel bad..Like someone said..don’t let anyone know that you are a virtues man by standing in front of the world and preaching that you are a vessels of love while in private you loath a person who mocks your love one..

My husband watched it several times and he thought immediately it was real. Will laughed initially and THAT caused him shame when he saw the hurt in his wife’s face, so then he has to defend her honor. I think there was anger but also rage in Will-he had to defend her for a joke but Jada had been shoving her affair in his face for a year and then talking about it on her show. She’s humiliated him over and over again- so when Will says “you have to take the abuse”, I think he means HE has to take the abuse. He keeps trying to be her knight in shining armor but it hasn’t been enough. That has to get to him.

Marlene thank you. Putting aside the fact that Chris Rock's "joke" was wildly inappropriate given the circumstances, Will Smith has just been living in a nightmare for the longest time. And bottling it all up. NOBODY of his caliber at an event of this magnitude would EVER lightly do what he did. This was pent up rage, hurt, and who knows what else boiling to the surface culminating in a completely automatic response. Now putting Chris Rock's "joke" back on the table, imagine how the tables would have been turned had Will stayed in his seat. I've been saying since it happened, had Will just sat there, Chris probably would have landed in hot water over that joke. Insulting a woman on her physical appearance is not comedy. I know. I'm a comedian. It's tacky, it's 5th grade bullying, it's embarrassing for a "professional" comic to do at such a huge event. Even if her condition were not a factor, the joke is STILL tacky. I know Jada is no angel. But 2 wrongs don't make a right. In my personal and professional opinion, Chris Rock should be ashamed of himself.

@@benscott9367 I suspect Chris is a little upset at himself for the joke, especially since he did a whole documentary (inspired by his daughters) about the black hair business, unfair biases & judgments and the extortion of women who have to sell their hair to keep the hair machine moving. I was shocked he made the joke (cuz I watched his program and know how passionate he is about breaking the stereotypes) however these events seem to make comics forget their own rules at times. They just want to make the majority of folks laugh and move on. I give Chris major props for keeping himself so professional afterwards and not dragging it on and on in interviews since then.

This was a very unfortunate event. I don't know if Chris Rock even wrote this joke himself or was just reading it, but it was a pretty mild and harmless statement. Will Smith laughed at first, but then apparently either the joke registered or he saw Jada's response, and that sent him over the edge. The most ridiculous thing to me is Jada's reaction. Alopecia is a medical condition that causes hair loss, and it's a relatively common condition. A lot of people choose to wear wigs, but apparently Jada chose instead, as some people do, to shave her head. Shaved heads in women, and particularly black women, is fairly common and is not unattractive. What makes this whole thing unacceptable to me is that for months, Jada Pinkett Smith has been profiting financially by going on numerous talk shows talking about her alopecia, so it's not as if Chris Rock divulged some deep, dark secret about her. The world in general, if they even noticed her shaved head, would have probably just assumed it was her fashion choice, as it is the choice of so many women, if she herself had not publicized her condition over and over again. Chris Rock could have made the same joke if her hairstyle was just a matter of choice, and not related to a medical condition - would she still have been offended? She's a public figure and as such is subject to "roasts" by comedians. It's part of the price of fame. I feel like her reaction was totally uncalled for and ridiculous. It was a harmless joke about a condition she talked about constantly - and it's not like it's a fatal or uncommon condition. Millions of men and women live with it. They either try to cover it up with wigs or hairpieces and hope no one knows, or they shave their heads and make it public. Jada chose the latter and has no right to take offense at a harmless joke. Despite Will & Jada's unusual and "open" marriage, he is apparently pretty pussy-whipped and felt he had to defend and protect his wife from he perceived as an "attack". I admire Chris Rock for his graceful reaction and his professionalism in continuing with the show. To quote Shakespeare, this was "much ado about nothing".

So what happened was this. A few years ago when she told Will out of nowhere, as well as the entire world that she's been having an affair, and in that same moment she told Will "If you loved me more, you would have known". I think what's happening here is that since then, he's having to do all of the crazy things in order to "prove" to her that he loves her "enough" to be validated.
He thought the joke was funny because it was extremely light humored and quick. But her, having her own problems and insecurities about her hair loss issue of which she obviously can't get over and needs to work on, he saw that look on her face and did what he felt he HAD to do to show her that he "loved her enough".
This.... this is what a toxic, negative, mentally and emotionally manipulative relationship looks like. I feel sorry for Will, but he still has to take responsibility for his actions, be they of his own choosing, or the choosing of his manipulative, awful wife.

Well, I also thought that this was staged, your video made me revisit my opinion. I love that you always put behaviour in context - these notes on sitting in the first row and lighting were really eye-opening.
I think that there were two factors that made people, including me, think that this was staged. First, there are so many lies and deceptions in entertainment industry that over the years, people became distrustful towards what they see.
Second thing is, ironically, the authenticity of the situation. This whole fight looks very awkward compared to fights that people are used to seeing in movies - and, when watching the actors do it, probably subconsciously expected from them to deliver even in similar real-life situation. Punching someone in the face in real-life does not look like that, it often looks 'weird' and clumsy compared to what you see on the screen.
Another thing I noticed now is that we don't even have a good camera angle here. If this was staged, I'm sure they would have pulled off a far better show because they would have a whole team of specialists working all around them making sure that it looks at least entertaining.

I clicked on this thumbnail without any intention of watching the whole thing. I stayed because it's genuinely a very interesting analysis on the nuance of body language that I never noticed. Also, the way he breaks down what he sees and what it means to him is very reveling. I think we could all learn some important lessons about others and hopefully even ourselves by paying more attention to how others react and what we are saying with our body language.

Ronald Reagan was an actor and was known for his humor.

I disagree with you about it being a particularly nasty joke. Yeas it is from a medical condition, but I personally only knew that after the slap. It's possible Chris didn't know about it being a medical condition either. It doesn't look like chemo or something, it literally looks like she buzz cut it 🤷
And 2nd in Chris rock's words. "It was a GI Jane joke!" He didn't say anything particularly mean, just like hey you remind me of GI Jane. Not a particularly funny joke tbh, so it's even possible it was improvised on the spot as a very soft blow that he didn't realize was actually a trigger for her.

@Theseustoo Astyages Regina Hall humiliated Will Smith earlier but he didn't dare slap a woman, then came Chris Rock. Will's slap was about himself, he wanted to show his wife that he was more of a man than the young entanglement. It wasn't about her medical condition. The joke was used by the Smiths as a tool to play out their bad relationship. Now, we know their dirty laundry. Before the slap, I didn't know anything about what was going on between the two adulterers. Or, maybe it was just one, whichever.
