I grew up in a very orthodox Mormon home, and this trailer resonated with me deeply. Not sure if I'll have the strength to see the film, but I will definitely try!
Not super orthodox here (and now ex). Not sure I'll be seeing this. Didn't react very well to this trailer or to descriptions found in some reviews from Sundance.
I grew up in an insanely Christian household and I saw this movie yesterday. It made me feel an overwhelming sense of anxiety and anger, but it was a really well made movie
I've read a lot of good things about THE STARLING GIRL.and I'm so glad when I heard that Bleecker Street had acquired it few months ago. I'll definitely be watching STARLING GIRL in theaters next months. I've been enjoying Bleecker Street 2023 titles like "Emily" and "Mafia Mamma", I can't wait to see more of their titles later in the year.
This looks amazing! It looks powerful, raw, and relatable. Bleeker Street is such an underrated studio! After watching Breathe, Mafia Mamma, and Jules, I’ll watch anything the studio makes!
Very good film. And a good demonstration of how not to do Christianity with all the heavy guilt trip crap that's prevalent across the American bible belt states.
I was raised by a christian, Pentecostal mother...I use to see through so much of the crap that would go on. Twenty minutes into this movie and it just gives me the creeps. Lots of screwed up people in churches. People are people no matter where they are.
Unfortunately, I think it’s been thoroughly documented. It just depends on the lens you’re viewing from, if you see it! Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God ( and his children). ❤
Feels like a whataboutism. Yes, there's a problem in Hollywood. What does that have to do with the trailer? Are you deflecting because you support the culture portrayed in the movie?

I’m a Christian women and I’m so tired of Hollywood making us look like we’re bad people. I go to a church that is extremely accepting. I’ve made lots of mistakes in my life and I’m so happy to be back at church. I even met my husband there and we now have a 2yr old son. Wish people would talk more about the positive things about religion.
You are aware of the fact that the church covers up many pastor's sins that they commit against children, so many stories where they blame the victims, I'm not saying that there aren't good Christian communities, i am sure there are many good communities like yours. The issue is that the communities that are not very open and accepting and most of the time use religion as an excuse for their racism and sexism, never facing any real-life consequences. The victims that come out of these communities can't do much about it but to tell their stories. These movies aren't fiction you know? They are based on true events and experiences of real people. These people who have been through so much pain and suffering that they had to run away from their families and communities, the least we can do for them is acknowledge their story and show them love ❤
Wow you sound just a preachy as Hollywood right now. You missed her point entirely….name a positive Christian movie that came out in the last 5 years? That’s @Grecia Rodriguez point. But no, we are all evil southern baptists.. or evil Catholics….or evil cult leaders.
I am a drinker and I’m so tired of Hollywood making us look like we’re bad people. I go to a bar that is extremely accepting. I’ve made lots of mistakes in my life and I’m so happy to be back drinking. I even met my husband there and we now have a two year old son. Wish people would talk about the positive things about drinking… what works for you doesn’t for everyone and every lifestyle is glorified and vilified by media. Take a listen to those who resonate to it and have empathy. Drinking brings joy and community to some while churches do the same for others. People have different experiences, don’t play martyr. If anything religion has more legal protections than others who also want to live out their personal decisions
this is fundamentalist christianity. its not a cult. their community is just more devout and has different standards in dress and other things than other christians.

Yes because not being a whore with a high body county and saving yourself for marriage si as to have a loving sexual relationship with your spouse is "so controlling"! /s.
When I read the description, I thought this was gonna be about a self-loathing lesbian, similar to "Yes, God, Yes", but this is actually a bit more subtle.
Right I thought it was gonna be gay lol 😭 but this might be good too, depending on what direction the movie takes. It could have a really poignant look into how a Christian upbringing can have an effect on a teenage girl.

Incredible film.
Does anyone else think this could be the origin story for Clarice Starling from Silence of the Lambs?
