The 200 year old Judges Abandoned Mansion Down South in North Carolina

- This old house originally began its life as a small one story house built in the late 1700’s. The back half of the house which still remains incorporated into the main Greek revival structure. In the middle 1800’s the family found success in farming and local politics as the father was a local Judge and had this large Greek revival house built around 1830-1840. The house would remain lived in by the same family for another few generations until the 1960’s to 1970’s when the house was finally vacated for a final time. For the last 40 or so years the house has sat empty slowly crumbling away and giving into the cruel hands of time and nature. Such an incredible old place, glad to have been able to document it. The second house was also built around 1850-1860 in a rural old railroad town just before the onset of the American civil war. Built for a local prominent businessman in a very unique style for the area, looks like a raised creole cottage or like some house you would see down in Louisiana. Loved the unique architecture. Both houses are lovely. I wish they could both be saved. Too many antibellum structures are being lost in our country. They are historical landmarks and it is a shame to lose them.

I know where both these houses are. I lived in the town of the second one for 14 years. There are a lot of abandoned houses around that area. A lot!! We lived in a house that was built in 1800. Sold it after my husband died. Love your videos.

I agree with your statement of 'it is a shame this place has so many remodels.'...I do home restorations to keep the homes in tack with the integrity they were built.I refer to most remodels as 're muddled '.

I explored a house very similar to this one many years ago before they tore it down. It was built in the mid 1800's too. And I too was flabbergasted that the stair case was simple and towards the back door instead of the front door, but that stair case was even more simple that this one and also when I went upstairs it was just one large room because I wondered about the bedroom situation. I wish I would have looked for an attic but was scared of getting caught. But the outside and down stairs was beautiful! I love watching your channel!

Those places survived the Civil War and God knows how many hurricanes, tornadoes and other natural disasters but not the ravages of time. Would be great to see them restored to their former beauty.

The first house had a unique transom! They bring in additional lighting and provide air flow, love it! If only they still made houses this way… Thank you Kappy for the re-tour 👍😊 The floor plan for house two was unique as well! Loved seeing the second floor balcony 😊

This judge’s house is a house one could only dream of finding and exploring. For me, the older, the better! Your love and respect for these old homes comes shining through. I’ve always been fascinated with old homes since l was a child. I was lucky. My parents loved beautiful old homes. I was raised in a late 19th century home, which my parents and 3 siblings loved. I now own and live in a circa 1850’s stone house with the original fireplace, in Ontario, Canada. Kappy, it is great to see your knowledge of old house terminology increasing. It adds so much to the exploration of your finds! The more knowledge, the better. I respect your love of old architecture and the stunning shots you take. Thank you for hours after hours of pleasure! I can tell you one thing and that is that the number of abandoned old homes in Canada don’t even begin to compare with the States! I'm impressed that the grounds surrounding these homes are still well maintained . Usually they are surrounded by vegetation creeping in and overtaking them.

Two interesting houses today. The first house sadly is in such decay that you really can't get an idea of how it looked. The original house was small compared to the addition that was added in the 1850's. I'm sure when it was finished it was quite spectacular. I wonder where the outhouse was? Was this first house near a river? That's the only thing I can think of for it to be built on stilts.
Sadly both houses are in a sad state of decay. Houses like these need to be preserved and not abandoned. It's part of our history...

That 1st house was kind of sad. So many pretty features left though. The 2nd home was more to my liking. "IF" they hadn't try to make it modern....
You are correct that the paneling was back in the 60's or 70's. I remember when my Mom decided she wanted paneling in ever room except the kitchen. Messed up our house for a few weeks. But she got her way. That was in the early 70's. Another great video Mr Kappy! Thanks for taking me along!

Good video, Kappy. First place is very dark and hard for me to pick up much detail but i like the big rooms. Interesting it seems like the outside had never been painted. You are right about the second house, all the old details have been stripped away. I thought it had a nice feel to it, though. I think it was a nice place to live in .Thanks, Kappy

Them ole tin roofs really withstood the test of time. Them and the slate ones unless a tree fell on em .
The first "skinny house" was interesting. Probably built that way for heat to circulate. Then put up some giant velvet curtains in front of all them windows ,perfect !
We remodeled our kitchen in our 1850's 2 story brick house. Made it look old with a white farm house style. When we took out the drop ceiling that dad put in years ago, he too wrote the date of the remodel. I took a pic of it before we put in the new ceiling.
That judge's house...there's something so restful about that style. A person can visualize the pewter candlesticks, hurricane lamps, a fire burning, tea, and a rare good book. The second house...interesting style. A shame it can't be saved. Wood paneliing-yuck!!! But a way to hide cracks in the plaster. Thanks, Kappy! 🌷

Think of the tools used to build that late 1700s portion of the first house, evident in every board. The fact that any local chamber of commerce would ignore such history right under their noses is short-sighted and takes away an irreplaceable piece of history.

First one is winding down. The second one reminded me a bit of some old rental homes in nearby Petersburg. Pretty humble livin 19:40 condition in 2008 but still has some personality. Thanks for sharing. ❤

I would be afraid to live in the one with a grave yard. Spooky plus depending on how old the graves are the graves can be sunken. Neat old houses though. Nothing built today would last as long. I remember as a child, in the 60's, living in an old house similar to the first one. There was an outhouse and a well. Strange things happened in and around that house lol. Spooky

You have an excellent job ! Have you ever thought about doing big huge buildings of any kind hotels warehouses whatever that was built using handsaw brace and bits, bricks, rocks, and mortar ? Probably have to go into some bigger older towns, Atlanta Chicago Chicago. I love to look at huge old buildings. At one time I could’ve restored old houses thought about buy and restore some older homes and sell them now I’m too old to do it but still love to look at them and think about it and dreaming on thanks for your videos ! This house looks to be rehabitable. The Judge's house is too far gone, what can be salvaged souls be.
Needs brought down to the stubs. You need to get unto contracting and get some investors. Save these houses. You see the beauty in the roughest of homes. Make videos and out it out to the Design Channels.

Ya know, so often, I think how sad it is that some of the most amazing woodwork, stairs, furniture, etc. is literally left to rot. I understand and respect the thought of leaving it for others to have a chance to film and simply because it doesn't belong to you. Tell me Kappy, if the owner of a particular mansion gave you written permission to have anything in the house you want and you knew it was in its last days, would you make arrangements to get the furniture, fireplaces, staircases, etc.? As silly as it may sound, I often think of how nice it would be to have permission like that and to be able to go and get that furniture. I don't have much room in my trailer, but I would find someone who would take good care of it or donate it to a museum. How do you feel about that?

It saddens me to see that these once grand old homes are left to rot because OF their history in the South. Slavery was never good, but it's not the home's fault if they were built by slaves.
Says a lot about the builders of these 200-300 year old houses. They are still standing today, and the people didn't have electric tools or computers, just a few hand tools and muscle power. The houses built today will not last long and aren't even near as nice as these beauties.
What was once a stately home is now a derelict old shell of what it once was. No one is around who cares about the family cemetery any more. Sigh.
That house needs a good handyman right now the roof is metal so it's not gitting water damage so why not fix this one up.. second house is not in to bad shape I love the old doors and that white mantle that place can be fixed up nice..

Can you believe the INSANITY that people lived in. You know that song by kelly clarkson- Mr Know it all --with out cell phones, or even radiator heaters, not even central heating or air conditioning. I mean people came to LOGIC they said through out their whole lives---according to them in this time period. Can you believe people were alive in here--reminds of jack nicholson in the SHINNING at the BAR......what a great movie----no one will admit their isane
The 2nd house, it seems that the downstairs was probably for slaves to do the work for the house. The 2nd floor was the living space for the master and family.
