I lived next to Saul Zaentz in Pacific Heights in SF. He parked his Rolls Royce in our building's parking garage right next to my beat up old Honda Civic. It was all I could do to not ding that a-hole's Rolls everyday. I had rented the spot to him not knowing who he was. I went to the Fantasy Records building not knowing what was inside (it was a plain looking building). I walked in and saw hundreds of gold records on the wall. I was whisked up to his office where I met a small man who was every bit the description of Scrooge. A true rip off artist who stole from America's best rock songwriter of the sixties.

Saul Zaentz and Stan Polley standing next to each other shoveling coal into the fires of hell.
With CCR it was a combination of egos (ALL of them) and the ego of the main talent (John) had all of the leverage. In the end it was just a shame that the brothers never reconciled before Tom's death. The other two have told their side and, to me, John's carries a heavier weight of truth. But, as this comments section illustrates, everyone has their own opinions.
CCR will always be my favorite band. Willy and the Poor Boys was the first rock album I ever bought and I wore it out. I soon bought all of the rest of the albums and loved them all, even Mardi Gras. Lookin' for a Reason, Tearin' Up the Country, Someday Never Comes, Hello Mary Lou, Door to Door and Sweet Hitch-Hiker were all pretty good tunes.

He said if they didn't do it that he would end the band, then Fogerty spends the next 50 years complaining about it. Fogerty is one of the greatest songwriters & Rock n Roll artists.
He also was/is a ruthless individual towards his brothers and band mates.
    read Bad Moon Rising.
many greats are ruthless about their art, but Fogerty was a Statue of Liberty-sized jerk about it. he literally told the RRHoF committee that he would not attend the award ceremony if any of the other members of CCR were there, his brother Tom not being a problem because he was dead (not having received a kind word from John in decades).
it was the most depressing book about RnR I’ve ever read, including for the one about Badfinger.
I guess Fogerty just put every last tally whacker drip of soul, passion, compassion, love, etc. into his great (until after Creedence broke up) songs.
he sings so powerfully that he could’ve been in AC/DC (where Malcolm would have killed him) but he talks like Mickey Mouse.

I want comment about the issues in CCR as I was kid when all that went on..I’ll say this. I have drummed in several small club bands. Never a touring act. But I always took it seriously. In each band I practiced hard and rehearsed a lot. Out of five bands I finally got into one where we had no Prima Donna. I had a awesome guest house on my property. My music room. I graciously allowed ‘our’ band to rehearse there. I owned 95% of the PA and a practice pa…I owned the trailer and truck that hauled it. Never did I pull rank and remind anyone of that. Unless they said ‘my band’ Or took an attitude marginalizing the rest of us. My fav was this idiotic bass player who had the balls to say be was canceling rehearsal and had some guys coming over to my house to jam.. Gets better. And just whose gear do they plan on using. My drums. The guitar and keyboard players rig . Not to mention I had a 10 channel board. Crown heads, monitors Michs. Full la A perfect setup. Ignorant f@#$.
I lol. Let me get this straight. Your canceling our practice and you think your bringing people i don’t even know into my home who you are volunteering our gear for them to use. ‘Im the front man. Its my band’. Oh snap

I don't know how it is today, but back in the late '60s and early-to-late '70s:
(e.g.) The Doors SHARED their writing AND publishing equally "Music by the Doors" (except for "Soft Parade") .
Credence: My guess is that the leftovers after Zaentz got done pillaging Credence's publishing were NOT shared equally, but instead the majority of any remaining writing/publishing dollars went to John, who wrote the hits. I'd be willing to bet on that.
Bands back then used to go through this all the time. In those days (not today) bands didn't make much money on the road (some bands LOST money), yet everyone in the band shares equally in the misery of traveling & touring.
Back then the money was in songwriting and publishing. Granted, Zaentz was the bad guy iMHO, but I'll bet John Fogerty kept the songwriting credits and remaining publishing revenues mostly for himself. I've been in a few bands, and I can tell you that not sharing songwriting and publishing revenues is a proven recipe for inter-band squabbling and even eventual hatred & break-up.
In our band 3 of us wrote, but we didn't "share" - so if we had lucked out (we didn't) and had a couple hits, our drummer (who didn't write) would have received essentially nothing - even though he worked just as hard (especially on the road) as the rest of us. That would really suck, and MAYBE that's what went on with the other 3 guys in Credence.
It would be interesting to see which bands who are successful share, and which ones do not. Sting wrote most of the hits for the Police. Did he share with Copeland & Summers? You tell me.
and PS ... if John Fogerty DID share WRITING and publishing dollars (the ones left after Zaentz took his share) with the rest of Credence
    then please accept my apology.

I think the other members of the band were correct. by the time they got their shot the band was already so established that it had become so recognized for Fogerty's sound that any attempt by the other band members to be creative would be viewed as a complete deviation from what the public thought the band was. CCR sounds like fogerty that says it all and Fogerty's music is not good enough to carry that band or any other band that's why Fogerty has done nothing but flounder since he left the band.

Wrong.. John shared his song writing royalties with the other 3 up til 1969, despite them not contributing one note to the process, so they became wealthy as a result of his generosity, and yet.. the 3 of them still screwed him over and sided with the record company that shafted him.. so id suggest that it pays to deal with the facts..

It tells a story of the trials & tribulations of a lifetime of trying to make it in the music, business!, culminating in a very successful career! Not many people can take the reins of a group of musicians & take them from “garage” band status to arguably 1 of the greatest roots based R & R bands in history!
