Most people seem to think Derek Forbes quit Simple Minds. In actual fact he was sacked, the others thought that he was no longer contributing or committing himself fully to the band moving forward. They were ready to push for the big time and Derek, they said, was not as available as they required him to be, and that would have to be 100% commitment. He seemingly was enjoying the rock star club life too much. They have more recently stated that they should have tried harder to let him know his position was in danger and that he would have to get his act together if he wished to remain with the band moving forward. I know I would have. What a bass player, and was always integral to creative process musically. They should have tried much harder, he had earned that right. By the way, I grew up just round the corner from Derek Forbes in Castlemilk. He was on Castlemilk Drive & I was in Bogany terrace. He was a couple of years older than me & I must be honest I didn't really know at all. Coincidentally, I roadied for a band when I was 17 - 18 yrs of age called Diversion, who played pubs & clubs. They did well & always had plenty gigs. There were 4 band members. Guitar & vocals - Billy McConnachie, Bass & vocals - his identical twin Ricky McConnachie, Drums - Donnie MacNeil, Keyboards & sometimes Accordion & backing vocals - Drummer Donnie's younger brother, one Mick MacNeil. His musical talent was obvious to anybody who was into music on any level, I saw it for myself many times & I was not even mildly surprised when he achieved the level of success that he did. By the way, he was a nice guy as well, no airs & graces, I was just a roadie, a young guy about the same age as him, but was always inclusive & up for a laugh. Let me tell you , his brother Donnie was a brilliant drummer, musical talent must run in the family.
Absolute monster. I was absolutely obsessed with Sons and F / SFC. First time I saw them I was Front row Hammersmith Odeon in 1981. IMHO this was when SM were at their very best.
The best instrumental ever. Simple Minds were never the same after Forbes left. In truth they were starting to lose their sound a bit with Sparkle In Rain so it's prob just as well he bailed in '85. A tremendously unique bass player and vastly underrated.
@rabbruce8232 Agreed only two left out of rhe original five, minus Derek, Michael, Brian, bring them back and make a new record with either of the producers from their first five albums...it would go straight to no 1!
Disagree MacNeil was their core sound and the reason they sounded the way they did and why the quality of their music went down the toilet after he left in 1990.
Just pure class and what is missing in the current Simple Minds line up. These days, they're like a tribute band. If Derek can do this, making it sound as it should, why can't Kerr and Burchill?
Has any Bass Player ever Excelled More except for Mark King and the late great Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzie??? Thick guitar strings more than pull their weight when combined with Skilled Artists! 😎💪👍
Simple Minds lost it whe Derek Forbes and Mick McNeill left. Every great band has a solid spine. When they left, Simple Minds became bland in my opinion.
The greatest riff machine bass player of modern times,, Derek Forbes,,!!
You must check out Mark King of Level 42 and Les Claypool of Primus you'll love them both!
Not bad for a wee boy from Castlemilk.

Superb bass riff.... Mr.Forbes is one hell of a bass player. Mel and Derek...one of the finest rythm sections ever.
Bear in mind, it wasn't Mel on the original track, but your point is still valid.

Not so underrated , he is well known
And songwriter!
@@gabriel222 absolutely
Nuff Said! 👍
Derek is the boss when it comes to incredible bass lines ❤️
One of the greatest bass players in modern music, period! Hat's off Derek, you are the P(erfect) Bass Man!
Along with Peter Hook,my two favourite Bassist’s
The big guy knocked out a line in the big sleep... That made me pick up the bass, and learn that... Miss u dad
Now that's the way it should be played 🥰💖💕
Whenever i watched SM live there was only ever one bloke id bother to look at, that was Derek, brilliant, cool, couldn't take my eyes off his playing.
Simple Minds has to rethink and put him back... PERIOD.
And just think this fella was a lead guitar player before being one of the best bass players of all time.
Love how fast he plays, like regular rhythm guitar, but with a lot more heft and depth
U2 had The Edge and The Minds had Derek Forbes as their core sound and exceptional landscape musician. Brilliant!
The difference being The Edge is still with U2
Very perceptive
Shocking why we can’t have the original line-up 😡

And no-one misses the guitar... Forbes & Hook are the Best
One of greatest bass players ever
Ahh fucking ace part of my youth soundtrack.
Love this ❤
Amazing bass player!!
Such a shame when he left , the band was never the same for me , even when Mc Neil
Left too , the heart and soul was no longer there
absolute class!!!!
The bass monster at work
Mark King & The Original Sound of Simple Minds are a force to be recond with!!!!
Derek, 💪👍😎
Mark and Derek are my bass legends along with Mick Karn, Simon Gallup, John Taylor (yes, him too) and few others.
einer der Beste Bassplaver ever
best bass theme ever
🤩 incredible
Holy shit … this is huge. Such talent.
best bass player
Derek came back with simple minds riunion see you soon
I hope concerts come back and Derek Forbes & The Dark come to the United States.
Really wish that they'd been the support at Hull last week.
Bedford Esquires ace
I believe I was there that night 🍻
Derek fantastic 👌🏽
Great times magic music
TOP TOP TOP
Bass god x
Just pure class and what is missing in the current Simple Minds line up. These days, they're like a tribute band.
If Derek can do this, making it sound as it should, why can't Kerr and Burchill?
Because they are too pig headed and stubborn to Ask MacNeil and Forbes back they should ask Gaynor back as well.
Is bass late... a part of sec?
Waterfront!
I’ll leave it there! 😎
fuck i love this bass
Has any Bass Player ever Excelled More except for Mark King and the late great Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzie???
Thick guitar strings more than pull their weight when combined with Skilled Artists! 😎💪👍
Thin Lizzy are my fave band but you must check out Les Claypool of Primus he's insane!
Your forgetting Geddy Lee best rock bassist ever.
SM became shite after Derek left.
Wrong they didn’t become shite until MacNeil left.
@@MrChippiechappie That's my opinion, that doesn't make it "wrong" because it differs from yours.
It's great but it's still missing Burchill.
Boom 🎶✨🕊️💫🌉
🖤💢💥
Is that Brian McGee on drums?
No, it can't be. McGee plays left-handed.
oh yeah him and tony levin ......
This is what the minds sounded like .apart from keybroads ( mick mcneil ) god! Good try👍
@Taco for me, the Kerr, Burchill, McGee, McNeil, Forbes lineup was perfection & the creative height of Simple Minds
And Mel gaynor. Without this drum ,bass combination sm have no 💓 heartbeat
derek forbes doit retourner dans simple minds car c'est le bassiste d origine
Simple Minds lost it whe Derek Forbes and Mick McNeill left. Every great band has a solid spine. When they left, Simple Minds became bland in my opinion.
só achei o baterista muito rápido 🤷🤦🏽
Propaganda... Brilliant also
They are much better now, with the girls.
Thems fighting words...
Are you for real? They’re fucking awful.
Ur right 😂
