This illustrates how important Mick was to the Minds. They’ve never been the same without him.
Get MacNeil and Forbes back so we can have a proper Simple Minds!
Totally agree !
So totally agree!😎👍
Get them all back to the same as street fighting years time.
Yes Sir
and Mel
Mick was the greatest keyboard player of the '80s new-wave era. Not an attention seeker. Just pure talent and taste.
100% de acuerdo
Add Billy Currie and Chris Payne

Agreed; also, I like how Jim has always said how important Mick was to the band, what a loss it was when he left and how his contribution lives on in their live shows. Duran Duran are a lot like that too. I wish certain other bands could have a similar attitude. 😔
Mick, Billy Currie, and Martin Gore.
Mick is a superb musician.
100% agreeing with you!
l’Âme des minds
Brilliant, Micks keyboards and Dereks bass…. ❤
...and burchill's guitars, it's incomprehensible how everyone mentions mick and derek and never charlie , the essential timbre of SM ... their sound owes a lot to their very talented guitarist ... to think that at the time they were particularly recognizable for that ..
I think the reason that Mick and Derek are name checked more than Charlie is simply because they are nostalgically missed by the fans, whereas Charlie has remained with the group. For me personally, I have played bass for nearly forty years and Derek was a massive influence.
True, of enormous importance, but more as a band, far beyond the technical prowess of its components, but from a compositional point of view, which is the thing that matters most in music.. alone we probably won't stand here talking about one one of the greatest groups in history, both for the level reached and for the very rare truly fundamental groups... a full-blown elegy, probably unrepeatable, naturally from '79 to '85... but let's say '89.. After another band with the same name but another without a doubt... 😂
Isn't Charlie the main composer in Simple Minds with Kerr for Lyrics ? I know Mick MacNeil composed Theme for Great Cities and i think was the wizard of sound in their albums and Derek Forbes was the one who gave musical ideas to Simple Minds just with his bass impro. But i always thought that the real mastermind behind Simple Minds was Charlie Burchill, am i wrong ?J
Has to be my favourite album of all time. Bought it when I was in the 6th form and I still play it almost every week now in my car. Reminds me of a carefree time. Mick's keyboards on that album were like nothing I'd ever heard. Special.
The first Simple Minds song I ever heard. Mick's swirling synths got me hooked. Magical album.
In my top five favourite albums.
The production still blows my mind even in 2023.
Mick McNeil -a 20th century icon breathing life into the 21st century
The true sound of SM was all about the keys and bass. Love this!
Blimey, never thought I’d hear one of the most captivating synth melodies of the 80s recreated on an accordion. Bravo Mick! A key part of the SM platinum era.
Just love this and it just shows how the Scottish influence in SM music was at the core of their best stuff. Thanks for this, it was a delight
Never been same without Mick. 😢
the genius behind the minds.
One of the most iconic keyboard riffs of the 20th century. Sampled by many Italian dance bands of the late 90’s
omg... this is totally awesome... 2 of the best musicians... Mick and Derek made SM just the best band in the 80's
Wish Mick could return to the band!!!!!!!!!!
Miss you so much, Mick( also Derek and Mel)!! An endless thanks and a big hug from an italian fan since 1982 !! Ciao
All great songs have that undelaying (basic) chemistry of band members that contribute to what will become classics. Change one component of that band and it's gone. Happens all the time through history. New Gold Dream was the pinnacle of The Simple Minds.
I couldn't stop smiling all the way through this
Brilliant Mick
My grandfather was a poor man, and died when I was about 8. The thing that I cherish the most about him, is that he owned an old accordion and could play it. I'd sit in front of him and listened in awe. He'd explain that you needed to fill it with air, and that "it was an orchestra in its own"... Jeez, I wish I hadn't lost him when I was so young.
Genius
This is gold. As I grow older I keep getting back to this album. Now seeing explained in videos how well it was made, it explains my continued interest!
It's my favorite album as well and I have the collection 😍
Absolutely brilliant! 😍🤩
Mick, your Keyboards saved my youth, man. All the best.
You can't think of the original Simple Minds without the beautiful and exciting keys Mick MacNeil provided. He was a defining factor in SM. And Mick, wherever you are, we want you to know we heard and we appreciated, over and over.
One of the most sonically beautiful albums of all time
When I was a kid my mum bought an accordéon like this thinking me or my brother would play on it, that never happened. Years later discovering new gold dream and it's synths riffs was like discovering a gold mine, I wanted to play that song, I bought my first synth, a D50, with my first wage once graduated. 30 years later I'm still playing this song every week... If I could travel back in time now that I know this song story I would grab this accordéon and never let it go.
Many thanks Mick for this revelation, your sound have enlighten our lifes
The Mars Bar line up in the early years was the best
fantastic.. in many regards, Mick is the Alan Wilder of Simple Minds. I guess Jim and Charlie never really let him have the same position in the band in fear of losing control
Mick is legend of the keyboards and squeeze box as Mick called it, was a honour to speak to Mick at Simple minds convention last Oct Glasgow and and get pic which I will frame top man Bill Iredale
Amazing ... looking at old videos when SM did this live i was so impressed of the speed of Micks hands and fingers... guess some synths almost did not manage it😉
OMG This is phenomenal !!
Mick Macneil could be all alone on stage, sitting on a stool with his accordion that I would still pay 1000 times the ticket price way before attending a free concert given by any artist of today's "popular" wave.
I bought a copy of that album on vinyl at a cancer research charity shop in Morningside in Edinburgh 10 years ago. I've been listening to it ever since. I had no idea what I was about to hear
Guy is a hero off mine , genius
Would' have been Marvelous if mick, mel, jim,Charlie,Derek could get back together for a big retro tour.❤
In the 80s Simple Minds enjoyed worldwide success, while always sounding very Scottish Now I know why!
I knew he was good, but FFS I have just counted about 8 fingers on his right hand at one point !!!! take me back to the early albums and videos and you could see /hear/feel the talent from Mick. When will the real Simple minds group do a reunion tour --make sure him and Derek are on board for it as well though ???
Lovely Mick. His choices of sounds, the textures he added and the beauty of the compositions....man, they were a great band!
One of the most unique and original keyboardist of all time. Phenomenal musician
Fantastic! thank you
Crazy brilliant😄🤯! TIL the logical connection between synth and accordion!
Thank you, Mick. That was bliss to listen to!
Jamais remplacé, les Minds ont beaucoup perdu musicalement avec son départ. Ses arrangements pour les concerts des années 1983 à 1986 resteront à jamais inégalés.
in truth I believe a band that together formed a whole, a full-blown elegy like a perfect football team, each of them gave their best, together the magic ... probably unrepeatable for those lucky enough to understand the level to which they have arrived, without considering that they were really innovative and fundamental precursors for modern music... but I clearly distinguish them between the old simple minds from 79 to 85 and the others who seem imitative cousins despite kerr and burchill...
You left Simple Minds and some fool told me that you've died on cancer somewhere in the early '90s. There was no UA-cam or social media and 30 years not any sign of Mick MacNeil. I'm a huge fan of the New Golden sound in total and a Herbie Hancock solo on Hunter and the Hunted made it a respectable input. I've analyzed all of your key parts and 30 years living with false information is an unbelievable fact. I saw you once live in Amsterdam with Simply Red as support act, it was the "Once Upon a Time" Tour with a massive live sound. Unforgettable how powerful the titel track opens with Robin Clark ✌🏼🦴
Love to see the original SM lineup together again
This is brilliant! Hearing this threw me back to 1982. I've loved this song since then! Mick was so fun to watch play live. ❤
He did NGD with a squeeze box. Just made my day.
That was the most amazing thing I’ve seen in music for a long time. Simple Minds always were more art than just music. Mick has just explained some of the working parts.
Mick is a genius. 🏴
That is just class, I love hearing how songs were created and Mick has just shed light on a classic... wish he was still in the band and he could do a acoustic version of this with the lads it would be brilliant..
what Simple Minds couldve been had Mick still been with them, awesome song writer and player
Amazing
Hi Michael, nice to see you again ! You really were the architect of SM sound ! Once you left....it never was the same...
Correct
Es alucinante, nunca me cansaré de flipar con esta canción
This is incredible..!!
Superb, Mick is an absolute legend.
Behold the man that made me want to become a keyboardist!! His contribution to Simple Minds is overwhelming, and he's forever my hero.
I mean Mivk provided the atmosphere and lushes to Simple Minds. He has to be my favourite member. Absolute genius. It’s not the same without him or the rest of the band.
God knows how many times ive watched these clips ...but ive just gone and done it again ✌️✌️🇬🇧🇬🇧
This was my favourite era of Simple Minds and it's because of Mick, what a magnificent musician ❤
Very cool. Big fan. Good to see you here.
When he played this live on keyboard he knuckled one of the keys which shows a classical training - its a very uncommon technique and shows just how good a player he is.
Watch this every time I need a NGD fix. It's not just genius it's beautiful, thank you Mick
So good!
what an amazing musician Mick is
Has to be my most played song at the moment , at least 5 times a day while on the desk top at work 🍺
That’s utterly amazing...
Be good if you were back in the chair Mick. I wouldn’t have been a minds fan without hearing you many years ago🫶
One of their greatest songs from one of their greatest albums. First time I heard it was on WLIR at Christmastime 1982. It remains on so many of my playlists today.
Truly mind blowing!!
Love it !
Such a humble man who created such beautiful music
To start with I thought, he’s never going to pull this off. OMG 🙏🏻
Good advice on how to develop techniques for keyboardists😊
You're responsible for trance❤
That’s great being a SM fan New gold dream with a fisarmonica from Castelfidardo
Legend❤
Superb.
I'm so glad I found this album in 1984
Ce serait tellement bien les retours de Michael MC Neil Derek Forbes et Mel Gaynor au sein de Simple minds
Totally agree 👍
If only they could get back together for one last tour 🙏
Goosebumps!
Thanks Mick for the music. When you played with the Minds they were so big. Also your sound at that moment.
amazing, this finally explains how the magical sound of that song came to be. Accordion wow really. Thanks for sharing.
81, 82, 83, 84... what a fantastic record!!
Absolute Perfection ❤️
Eres increíble Mick!!! Piel de gallina!!! ♥️🏴🏴♥️
Mick king of piano
This made my day... thanks Mick!
Such an incredible keyboard player, thank you for sharing this - love it
Absolutely brilliant. Got goosebumps. What's Mick up to alately??
Amazing! A master at his craft!
Magic 🙂
They were so young when they wrote this music from the gods..
Love Mick!
I'm 54 and still a fan sir 😊
I can't believe how he makes it work!
Beautiful
Hi Mick, since you left S.M their music has no longer had the magical pathos that made them famous: Too bad for everyone...
