      Agreed; also, I like how Jim has always said how important Mick was to the band, what a loss it was when he left and how his contribution lives on in their live shows. Duran Duran are a lot like that too. I wish certain other bands could have a similar attitude. 😔

      ...and burchill's guitars, it's incomprehensible how everyone mentions mick and derek and never charlie , the essential timbre of SM ... their sound owes a lot to their very talented guitarist ... to think that at the time they were particularly recognizable for that ..

    • @bassatnight
      @bassatnight Рік тому +8

      I think the reason that Mick and Derek are name checked more than Charlie is simply because they are nostalgically missed by the fans, whereas Charlie has remained with the group. For me personally, I have played bass for nearly forty years and Derek was a massive influence.

      True, of enormous importance, but more as a band, far beyond the technical prowess of its components, but from a compositional point of view, which is the thing that matters most in music.. alone we probably won't stand here talking about one one of the greatest groups in history, both for the level reached and for the very rare truly fundamental groups... a full-blown elegy, probably unrepeatable, naturally from '79 to '85... but let's say '89.. After another band with the same name but another without a doubt... 😂

      Isn't Charlie the main composer in Simple Minds with Kerr for Lyrics ? I know Mick MacNeil composed Theme for Great Cities and i think was the wizard of sound in their albums and Derek Forbes was the one who gave musical ideas to Simple Minds just with his bass impro. But i always thought that the real mastermind behind Simple Minds was Charlie Burchill, am i wrong ?J

    My grandfather was a poor man, and died when I was about 8. The thing that I cherish the most about him, is that he owned an old accordion and could play it. I'd sit in front of him and listened in awe. He'd explain that you needed to fill it with air, and that "it was an orchestra in its own"... Jeez, I wish I hadn't lost him when I was so young.

    When I was a kid my mum bought an accordéon like this thinking me or my brother would play on it, that never happened. Years later discovering new gold dream and it's synths riffs was like discovering a gold mine, I wanted to play that song, I bought my first synth, a D50, with my first wage once graduated. 30 years later I'm still playing this song every week... If I could travel back in time now that I know this song story I would grab this accordéon and never let it go.

      in truth I believe a band that together formed a whole, a full-blown elegy like a perfect football team, each of them gave their best, together the magic ... probably unrepeatable for those lucky enough to understand the level to which they have arrived, without considering that they were really innovative and fundamental precursors for modern music... but I clearly distinguish them between the old simple minds from 79 to 85 and the others who seem imitative cousins despite kerr and burchill...

    You left Simple Minds and some fool told me that you've died on cancer somewhere in the early '90s. There was no UA-cam or social media and 30 years not any sign of Mick MacNeil. I'm a huge fan of the New Golden sound in total and a Herbie Hancock solo on Hunter and the Hunted made it a respectable input. I've analyzed all of your key parts and 30 years living with false information is an unbelievable fact. I saw you once live in Amsterdam with Simply Red as support act, it was the "Once Upon a Time" Tour with a massive live sound. Unforgettable how powerful the titel track opens with Robin Clark ✌🏼🦴
