It's just the way it's played. Derek used to play loads of early simple minds tracks with a plectrum. It makes a hard, more defined sound than fingers. I had completely the wrong strings on this bass at the time. If you use fingers, its harder and can sound a bit jazz funk. These are flat wound strings (Mccartney style), and Derek would normally play with normal wound strings.
Great. I need to study this in more detail. I have a version I have done but it currently has a synth bass line and doesn't sound quite the same. will have to see if I can get this down. Was hoping Mr Forbes woudl put it up on his Hafferson channel like he did for I Travel but sadly not Thanks!
