  • You can be forgiven for thinking that having cacti and succulents outside all year round is the preserve of gardens found around the Mediterranean and central America. However, for those gardeners coping with the wet, freezing winters of the UK and northern Europe in general, there are a small group of cacti and succulents that will survive outside all year round so long as several condition are met. Both the plants and the growing conditions are discussed in this video.

great video and beautiful plants. I bet that some escobaria vivipara, red claret cup cactus, or pediocactus simpsonii would do fine outside with no cover during the winter there. with the proper drainage, of course. They arent much to look at but do have some fine flowers. Last year I planted some claret cup and simpsonii cacti in my yard in northern nevada and we had probably the most wet winter we've had in 15 years and I didnt cover the cacti. I thought for sure they had died in the rain/snow melt and frost, but when spring came they looked exactly the same as when I planted them, more or less. I was shocked. This year Im trying out a couple more varieties as well as growing some of the ones i mentioned from seed. would love to have a garden full of the little things.
    happy gardening.✌️
