    Could it be that they don't like cold feet? Yours are planted in beds, not pots. Typically in southern UK, if we get a -5C frost overnight, it will still get to +5C or more in the day. So, I doubt the cold will reach the roots much? However, in a small pot, all the roots will fell the frost.

    • @walkingtalkinggardeners
      @walkingtalkinggardeners 2 дні тому

      Hi Mark. Absolutely right, the roots of pot grown plants are far more susceptible to freezing conditions compared to those grown in the ground. However, calla lily bulbs are recommended to be planted to just below the surface, which makes them susceptible to ground penetrating frosts on those odd nights when you can get a further dip in temperature. With these more exotic plants, it is often the combination of freezing temperatures and waterlogged conditions that will kill them, but these hybrid Calla Lillie's have shrugged it off for the past couple of years. Hopefully they will return again in the spring. Simon

      @walkingtalkinggardeners 4 дні тому

      Hi Rachel , I've seen these naturalised along the salt lakes of Torrevieja, Spain, so they will cope well in hot dry soils. However they can become far more handsome plants with more favourable conditions. I would recommend simply digging in plenty of organic matter such as a sterilised. blended farm manure. To keep the soil a bit more moist, my grandad would have also lined the base of the hole with folded newspaper. Water periodically while they establish and then again during periods of drought. You can get a Box Moth Trap that has a pheromone to attract the adult moths. Nematoes Direct say their caterpillar killer nematodes are effective on these, I have not tried (I don't have any Box), your thoughts? My neighbour used the hose jet with some success, sadly he threw in the towel this year because of the effort. Apparently there is some evidence that birds are starting to learn that there is a food source on box, the same way that they have leant to feed in horse chestnuts, to eat horse chestnut leaf-miner moths. You may have noticed horse chestnut leave are not so badly damages as they were a few years back. (like the way bird leaned to steal the cream from milk bottles)I dont know if maybe feeding birds may help? RHS Wisley have a nice garden where they are experimenting with alternatives to box.

    • @walkingtalkinggardeners
      @walkingtalkinggardeners 5 днів тому

      Hi Mark, the traps will work in attracting some of the moths but is more effective as an indicator of having the box tree moth in the area. You can't used them and then expect your box plants to be caterpillar free as that won't happen. Once you see that the moths are around using the traps then you can apply your method of control. I haven't used the nematodes but the RHS has trialled them and found that they are not particularly effect and that was under controlled conditions. Really world conditions can expect to be significantly worse. In the RHS tests the nematodes proved to be approximately 50% less effective compared to the bacillus thuringiensis under favourable conditions. The nematodes also need to be kept in moist conditions as they will die off in dry conditions. They are also less effective on younger caterpillars compared to larger caterpillars, as smaller caterpillars are more protected in their silk cocoons. However as the general public cannot legally purchase and use Xentari then the nematodes will be their only viable natural predator option. Be that as it may I haven't heard of anyone actually use them so I have no real world feed back to offer. You can argue that I should have added this method in this video but without some decent evidence I don't think it a particularly good option. I have noticed that horse chestnuts tree have been better this year, but the birds around where I live haven't cottoned on to my box plants yet so they need to pull their socks up and stop being so lazy! I hope this answers you question. Simon

      @@walkingtalkinggardeners Thanks Simon, that very informative. I'm convinced the birds will do an excellent job in the future, maybe in 10 years or so. But we need something else to fill that long gap. Don't suppose you will be at the RHS flower show next Saturday?

    You can buy the biological control in the UK. Maybe I am missing something. I have bought some online from a company in Swindon and my neighbour had a professional come and spray his hedges (for £600! 😂). More information on the time of year, would be useful in your video as I am sure they have multiple "broods". I sprayed mine, only to find a load more caterpillars and adults just a month or so later.

    • @walkingtalkinggardeners
      @walkingtalkinggardeners 5 днів тому

      Hi Travelling Tom, Box tree caterpillar are active throughout the growing season. In West Sussex they can be active from Feb until the end of the year depending on the weather. Yes they have multiple broods but the timing of those will differ from year to year, place to place, will be temperature depended, availability of hosts plants etc. Yes you can legally buy bacillus thuringinensis in the UK but only if you have the PA1 certificate and a certificate for the mode of application such as a knap sack sprayer PA6. The general public (which this video is aimed at) cannot legally purchase or apply this product in the UK. Only those with the certificates can, however anyone can purchase it online from amazon and they will ship that in from Holland which is also illegal. You can also buy it on ebay from the UK which is also illegal. However it is not illegal to sell it as the responsibility is with the purchaser. £600 sounds extremely expensive. A knapsack spray guy for a full day should be around £300, the treatment is about £15 for a box which gives you about 12 litres of spray. Unless you have enough box plants to keep you busy for 8 hours of spraying then I would question this. You will definitely require multiple applications during the year as the bacteria can be washed off with rain so then next batch of hatching caterpillars won't be affected, and the moths lay eggs all the time they are around. You will require approximately 3 or 4 applications per year but it can easily be more. I have done 6 before, and yes I have the appropriate certificates. I hope this answers your question. Kind regards, Simon

    How do you get rid of white powdery mildew from my oak sapling?I’ve tried spraying it with water with milk and water with vinegar with no joy🤙🏻

    • @walkingtalkinggardeners
      @walkingtalkinggardeners 13 днів тому

      Hi Stephen, I have this on mine each year so I feel your pain. Assuming you have killed the fungal spores the structures will still be on the plant. You can consider wiping them off however there will still be damaged tissue underneath. This damage will not repair and will stay until the leaves drop or are removed. I will use a systemic or contact fungicide, but you just need to keep an eye on this during the year and spray as soon as you spot the signs. I hop this helps. Simon

    Hello again Simon, last winter I was successful in over wintering my regular dahlias in the ground. My winters are really cold, getting near zero F at times. I layered several inches of mulch bark chips on the plants. On top of that, I covered the entire area with plastic to minimize dampness. This past spring the dahlias survived and are now blooming for me! Next spring I'm considering trying tree dahlias. I don't know how they will react to my climate but I'm willing to try. Do you have good success over wintering these plants? I've heard that the UK winters are cold and wet.

    • @walkingtalkinggardeners
      @walkingtalkinggardeners 14 днів тому

      Hello Alien, and thanks for your question. Yes, I have grown these a couple of times and currently have a couple of specimens in the garden, which I planted last spring and overwintered fine. All I did was cover with 2-3 inches of bark chips, but temperatures only went down to -5 Celsius. Your 0 degrees Fahrenheit could be too much as they won't be as cold hardy as the regular hybrids. However, they are not expensive to purchase, so why not have a go? You succeeded with your other dahlias. Buy as bare root, plant them in a pocket of gravel to help reduce the issue of water logging in freezing conditions and cover with a thick dry mulch. Also, plant outside as early in the spring as you can so they have the whole season to establish before the cold weather arrives. Simon

    Really good advice, all of them. This is my 4th year growing saffron, and I have learned much, and made many mistakes and acquired many learnings. Will be sharing my FAQs video soon, but this year I am actually going to dedicate a raised bed to saffron...they multiply so much. Hoping for a good bloom production this year 🤞🤞🤞. Hi! I just harvested some seeds of allium ”mount everest” and was planning on winter sowing them outdoor in a tray or something. I tried last year with zero germination, but we’ll see how it goes this year. IF they germinate- how much growth would be expected during that first year? And when should they be planted out in the ground? (I live in Sweden with cold climate). 🌸

    • @walkingtalkinggardeners
      @walkingtalkinggardeners 15 днів тому

      Hi there, I would plant them out in the ground after late frosts have passed. However, it may take a couple of years before the bulbs are large enough to flower. I am not familiar with your winter weather, but I will assume it's cold, wet, and prolonged. Alliums are not going to like over wintering in freezing waterlogged conditions and need to be baked with heat over the summer. If you can provide good growing conditions, they should reach maybe 18inches in the first year but no blooms until.subsequent years. Simon

      Hi Andgie, there are a lot of factors to consider such as what country you are in, is it in sun or shade, is the soil moist, dry, which cultivar it us etc. If you are in the UK then it hasn't been good weather for them.so they are flowering late this year. I have only had a couple of cultivars flowers either one just putting out its flower bud today. Hopefully yours will bloom in the next few weeks. Give it some water during the hot weather and cut back any shading foliage. Simon
