      @@timf5875 Fun thing is, that many great drummers have at least some sort of Jazz background. Not all of them are Jazz drummers in an actual sense but they certainly studied Jazz, Jazz drummers and Jazz technique. In my book a good band needs three things: a drummer that knows Jazz, a bass player that knows Funk and a guitar player that knows Blues. They might not be the best band in the world, but if the singer knows his limits and doesn't mess it up, you will have fun.

    When people think of Cream they think of Eric Clapton (who ironically somewhat resents people comparing his current work with Cream). Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker had a LOT to do with it. While Clapton did sing on a lot of Cream songs, I personally think Jack Bruce was better vocally. Great reaction!

    • @RyTrapp0
      @RyTrapp0 2 роки тому +4

      Honestly, I think Cream is one of the few bands that truly see appropriate respect given to all of the members. Sure, Clapton is the only 'household name', but it's not like anyone else in the band is anything less than legend status in the world of music in general. I mean, doesn't put Ginger Baker up there with Keith Moon?

      Actually I don't think Eric sang all that many tunes during his Cream days. He basically developed his singing in the post Cream days encouraged by Delaney and Bonnie and now is a very fine singer. But Jack was a tremendous (and trained) singer throughout his career.

    It seems that nearly every time it was Eric Clapton's turn to sing, the camera would show Ginger Baker on the drums. This was their farewell concert, and as the concert continued, they kept inserting more and more visual effects, which ruined it for anyone actually interested in what they were playing. Jack Bruce was born in Bishopbriggs, Ginger Baker in S.E. London, and Eric Clapton in Ripley, near London - and believe it or not Clapton's father was a Canadian soldier stationed in the U.K. during WWII, who didn't stick around for Eric's birth. That's what adds meaning to Clapton's song "My Father's Eyes".

    Back in the mid-80s, Jack Bruce was touring with Ginger Baker and a young guitar player, and I saw them at a small club in Boston. Ginger was apparently not in great health at that point, so the first half of the set they had another drummer playing with them. He was quite good--you couldn't find any fault anywhere with his drumming, and most drummers would be grateful to be that good. But then Ginger Baker came out and sat down at the same drum set with the same settings on the same PA system, and the sound was entirely different. The sound of Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce playing together was absolutely the most massive, overwhelming sound I've ever heard--not loud, just massive, like someone dropped a freight train out of the sky. I never heard anything like it, before or since. I somehow managed to miss Cream every time they were in town, but that concert gave me a taste of what it must have been like. The reaction you note in the Albert Hall gives some indication of the effect of that power.

    100% with you in the "taste" of music needing some fluidity and organic feel as opposed to the hard, mechanical or digital gadgets taking over our lives.
    I'm a software developer, so that digital part is even more part of my life (and enjoy it). But for counterbalance I've always appreciated music and occasionally even contemplate taking up learning to play. When I mention that with friends and colleagues, I often get the advice to get a synthesizer to fit my skills - and I'm like "NOOOO", I need something analog, organic, something completely opposite of digital.
    I'm most drawn to saxophone as a solo-instrument I could enjoy playing by myself. Maybe one day...

    More of the music I grew up on. The sixties and seventies had a very wide variation of style.
    Of course album versions of most songs, if bands wanted them to get radio play, were between 3 & 4 minutes long. Although some bands would sneak a monster 7 or 8 minute one that got airplay. Live versions usually were much longer as they would improvise on stage.

      Personally I think the Ella Fitzgerald is terrible, it destroys the essence and power of the song

    As we used to say, "I wonder if these guys turn OFF?". My one and only regret from the hippie era: never seeing Cream live.

    Actually Jack Bruce was the only Scotsman in the band . Baker and Clapton were/are both English.

    Late to this party, but had to ask if now do you see why they used to call Clapton "God?"

    Great reaction video, but in fairness to Clapton it's a wonder he could sing at all. He was suffering with flu, but somehow got through the concerts. I guess after waiting 37 years for a full reunion concert he didn't want to cancel...

    Have you ever listened to Greta Van Fleet? If not check out the lead singer Josh Kiszka. He has a awesome voice.

    I understand the attraction of the live versions of tunes, but most of the time, especially with iconic songs, the studio versions are superior. That's case with this one as others have noted below. Jack's lead vocal is much better and you can hear the harmonies.
