    Comparing the Profoto B1 Air vs. Godox AD600 / Flashpoint Xplor TTL in all the categories that define a moonlight including power output, color consistency, power consistency, features, modifiers, system, accessories, customer service, build quality, size, etc.
    Profoto B1 Description (From B&H)
    Based on the popular D1 Air series of monolights, all of the familiar professional and convenience features we've come to expect from Profoto are onboard. The B1 has the same dense, durable polymer housing, integrated 77-degree reflector, built-in receiver compatible with Air transmitters and intuitive highly visible controls and display as the D1 but with two striking differences - battery power and TTL camera/flash integration.
    Busy photographers can literally set up their lights, slip the optional Air Remote TTL-C or TTL-N transmitter onto their camera's hot shoe and point-and-shoot without taking a reading and testing. Traditionally point-and-shoot would be a suspect term for a pro, but not if you're shooting back to back jobs on an impossible schedule with what you thought was an undoable deadline. Composition, posing etc, is of course up to the photographer, but time after time the B1 will give you a first shot exposure that's a keeper.
    The key to this control is the optional Air Remote TTL-C (for Canon) or TTL-N (for Nikon) transmitter. Operating on 2.4 GHz band width, the transmitter, really a controller, has 8 frequency channels and with 3 groups per channel and a range of up to 330' for TTL triggering and 1,000' for normal triggering. Each channel has power ratio capability of +/- 2 stops. If you prefer to use manual you have +/- 9 stops power variation. You've also got modeling light, unit shut-down and first or rear curtain control. The TTL-C/N and the B1 500 Air TTL have mini-USB connectors for firmware updates directly from Profoto's website. The head can be triggered by any Air Remote but requires the TTL-C/N for full functionality.
    Core performance features are equally impressive. The B1 recycles in 0.1 to 1.9 seconds but can deliver up to 20 flashes per second in Quick Burst Mode which engages at lower power settings. Flash duration in Normal Mode is a very fast 1/1000 sec but there's also a Freeze Mode that delivers flash durations a short as 1/19,000 sec. for capturing liquid sprays or splashes and other creative effects.
    A free update from Profoto's website adds High-Speed Sync to the B1 and Air Remote TTL-C or TTL-N. HSS is the technical term for syncing flash with shutter speeds shorter than the so-called x-sync - typically 1/250 of a second. It's a useful tool for controlling ambient light and for freezing action. Profoto uses a patent-pending technology that emits an extremely fast series of flash pulses. With the upgrade installed, a simple button-press activates HSS Mode allowing you to shoot at shutter speeds as fast as 1/8,000 of a second. The B1 500 AirTTL employs an exchangeable Lithium-ion battery that gets up to 220 flashes on a 2-hour charge with the included 2.8A charger or a 1-hour charge with an optional 4.5A quick charger. The Battery has fuel gauge-type LEDs that make monitoring remaining power easy. The B1's modeling light has been upgraded to LED to put less strain on the battery and provide the equivalent output of a 70W halogen bulb.
    Finally, B1's the back panel has been upgraded with a large, bright LCD screen that informs the user of the flash's power level, radio channel and group, sync choice, modeling light mode and recycle alert. There's also a large battery gauge that literally can be read from 20' away.
    The B1 500 TTL comes with protective cap, 2.8A charger and a soft case.

    Interesting analysis. I purchased the AD600 (Godox) 15 months ago. I loved it, after using speed-lights for several years. Eventually I bought the extension head as well as the AC power adapter (which you mentioned), which are both very useful; the extension is very useful, since I have low ceilings and I use top-down lighting with a 60" softlighter and need to position the light as high as possible. For high volume, the AC adapter is nice for safety, but either way the battery capacity is also very good. The problem though is that my colors are way off using the Godox, especially when shooting at smaller apertures/higher powers. My grey colors were losing their blue touch and turn magenta. That realization was what led me to this video.
    On one shoot, I was rolling the AD600 and the bulb fell out and smashed on the floor, so thanks, good job mentioning it in the durability test (the profoto the bulb is encased). I now take the bulbs out before any kind of long-distance transportation.
    In other words, everything you said matches my experience with the Godox. Thanks!

    Great comparison. Much more in depth than the Fstoppers review. And on a side note you are quickly becoming the Bob Wolf of Photography videos. Soothing to watch.....Informational.......Creative. I've owned both systems and recently sold/selling my Profoto gear. Profoto is amazing but as your review covers there are some downsides. I have been a proud Profoto user/owner for 8+ years but recently switched to a full Flashpoint Xplor/Streaklight/Ving 860 II system. Maybe it's just me but I fear Profoto will become the next 'Pocket Wizard' of the industry (Undercut by less expensive, feature rich, solid performing Chinese counterparts.) I owned the B1 and a B2 (sigh) in addition to the many $$$ accessories that complete the system. The tipping point was when I saw your video about the insane sale Adorama had three weeks ago. I was in need for a second and possibly a third light which meant over 4.5k in the Profoto world. Again, Profoto is amazing but there are significant downsides that you point out. I would add to your list, Redundancy. The trigger costs $411. It's quite difficult to justify owning two Air TTL remotes. Period. Two Godox/Flashpoint R2 remotes are less than $100. Then consider there is no two way feedback for light power output or a simple IR assist for when shooting in low light (yes I know about the X1 Ir assist issues but at least the X1 has that feature). The B1/B2 built in reflector is both a positive and a negative. The positive: Elegant design and ease of use with Grids, Gels, and Barndoors. The negative: Beauty Dishes and larger light modifiers such as parabolic umbrellas and +5' Octa's where I need a $200+ dome in order to 'approach' an omni directional light source. Also note that the Glass Dome can not be used on the B2. The bulb in the B1 can be user replaced but it is quite difficult to do and expensive. The B2 bulb must be sent back to Profoto for service. And though the Gel system is easy to use it 1) Can not be used when you have the Dome in place and 2) It extends the front of the unit so far forward that it adversely affects the throw of light when using a beauty dish. Anywho, I sold the B1 and with that money I bought three Xplor TTL's (triggers included) and still had enough left over for a damn good burger and fries @ Five Guys. So really it came down to this: What is better for me, my style, my budget: One B1 with one remote and one B2 for portability or three Xplor600's, One remote head, two AC adapters, studio rental time (we New Yorkers live in quite small spaces), and multiple remotes for redundancy.

      Thank you so much for the detailed user review, I'm still struggling which one to get, a B1 or AD600. If I need to do some continuous shootings, could AD600 capable to recycle fast enough for freezing the moving objects/models in action?

      @fredericraquil1324 7 років тому +2

      Kenji Liu hey buy the godox, if you re not happy with, just resell it a'd buy the B1. Considering the price difference, you will not regret your choice whatsoever.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  7 років тому +1

      The recycle speed is a touch slower at Full power but other than that it's about equal, and considering the AD600 is actually putting out more light / power setting it's actually faster in recycle. Also the test shows, flash duration is faster on the AD600 when comparing to light output, not wattage, so the AD600 is actually superior in that category.

    Good fair comparison. However I will point out (as a Profoto user) you can use multiple brands of softboxes and umbrellas on Profoto without a problem. For umbrellas you just have to make sure the shaft diameter is correct. For soft boxes you just need a Profoto speed ring. Personally I own and have tried several different brand softboxes and they all snap right into the Profoto speed ring.

    Re your observation that both units didn't gain power linearly at low power settings (turning up power 1 stop didn't t give 1 stop increase) I wonder if the ambient light from that window wasn't polluting your results...? At very low power, the ambient would be a significant percentage of total exposure but would NOT vary when you vary flash power, so changing power level would seem to have less effect. At high power settings, the ambient would be only a small percentage of total, so would have negligible effect on results. PS -- I have the XPLOR 600 and my only real complaint is the cheesy, notchy angle adjustment on the stand mount...

    • @zenithjcoke
      @zenithjcoke 6 років тому +1

      Very late to the party here, but you are correct. In the segment around 07:15 where he claims the Profoto is jumping a bit in exposure you can cleary see on the light meter that it's hopping between measuring the flash at 40-50% of the total exposure, so your explanation is right on the money. Also probably the reason he was experiencing the uneven exposure, as you can clearly see in the video that he just happens to shoot the B1 when the window light is bright and the other light when it's more dim.

    Awesome video! Price and compatibility are big factors for me in deciding, so thanks for thinking of those things in your review.
    Your videos are great, and not only because you appear to be a fellow fan of Nikon+Fuji, Flashes+Gels, and the Sekonic 758-DR.
    Question on the color "issue"... was that only because of jacking the power quickly? If set up at a mid-range power setting and left to settle there for 20-30 shots without much further change would you expect much variation? I already take a patch reference shot (passport) anyway. Now, I only have speedlights.

    Honestly, I was really torn between these two setups when I started shopping for a battery powered studio strobe. The Profoto B1 seems to be the benchmark from which everyone views strobes, and having a set of these seems to be a great bragging point for people... I get it, because I wanted some! Anyway, I priced out a set of two strobes and a trigger for Profoto, and found that this would cost me $4,567 for two strobes and a transmitter. At that point I went out and bought the Godox (Flashpoint) set from Adorama when it was on sale, and got two HSS/TTL heads, with two transmitters, for $1,098. It's a no brainer at that price difference, at least for me. I'm glad to see that the Godox/Flashpoint unit stacked up fairly well against the B1.

    Great review, thanks for taking the time. I'm looking to buy my first off camera flash system for on location sports. One concern I'm having trouble getting a handle on is recycle time to allow flash to keep pace with high fps sports shooting. Profoto has a freeze mode that I'm understanding may be better suited for fast sports.
    Can anyone comment if my high fps expectations are realistic? If so, does the profoto have an edge?
    I'm ok buying profoto, but the features of ad600 really appeal to me; AC power option, flashes per battery charge, etc

Other than in the US here in Germany is no possibility to get any customer support / repair if something happens to your strobes.... That decreases the suberb performance of the xplor.

    There is a saying: The best camera is this which you always wears with you and so it's with a portable flash system, too. Nearly nobody cares about the portability. Packing size, wheight etc. I really love to get the Godox as small as about 20cm by 12cm by 18cm. Put the akkus on any side pocket and have it all (incl. the camera) in one big roller bag.
    I haven't worked with the Profoto's yet but with the Broncolor Siros L 800. They are that fxxx heavy and bulky that I won't wear them all around. I think the Profoto's are nearly the same. They don't change its size when you unplug the accu.
    And if it comes to power output. You can put two AD600 into one super lightweight and small twinhead for having 1200ws.
    More to consider: If you buy one set of the Profotos you get one charger.
    If you buy 2 Godox you get 2 charger. So if you are having lunch on your job you are able to charge both accus at a time.
    As I mentioned before the new Godox Xpro triggers can switch from TTL to M using the equivalent power output.

    I loved this in-depth comparison. I love my godox AD600 but one thing it's lacking is documentation and how to manuals. Do you have a good source that could show me how to use it with a wireless light meter and the stroboscopic mode?

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  7 років тому

      Yeah they do need a better system for that. As for using it with a light meter you just have to use a light meter that will detect any flash and use test on the X1. Stroboscopic mode i'm sure there are tutorials on youtube that could be applied, it's pretty simple to access on the AD600.

Do you think that is something that can be modified in the firmware? ... it would be a huge bonus to these lights if it is possible. Speaking of firmware... I just received my 2 FP Xplor TTL and a 1200ws extension head... the first thing I wanted to do was upgrade the firmware but as I understand it, the firmware is only upgradeable with a Windows machine... is that right? Very interested in this myself. The Profoto ability to use TTL, switch to manual (at the exact same setting) and then adjust to taste could be very useful.

      now to figure out how to influence Godox into doing it... I have good reason to believe Godox will be introducing a new 1200ws light and 2400ws extension head very soon. I was hoping they were going to do this at Photokina or even PhotoPlus... but I know it's coming

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  7 років тому

      I definitely think it's possible, and would assume it wouldn't be that hard to program it in. The light is already "remembering" a power setting in TTL during the preflash, all it has to do is then use that figure when switching to manual. Perhaps by making some sort of hold group to switch option. I'm not expecting a 1200ws light, but a 2400ws head using 4 AD600 has long been "expected".

      Rob, I seem to recall reading on Godox’s page that the light remembers the last exposure for a few seconds… I looked in the manual but can’t seem to locate it now… I’m going to attempt contacting them… I’m holding my breath, wish me luck… Go! lol

    Thank you very much for this detailed review, I'm still struggling which one to get, a B1 or AD600. If I need to do some continuous shootings, could AD600 capable to recycle fast enough for freezing the moving objects/models in action?

    • @robhallphoto

      The AD600 and B1 are pretty close in recycle speed if you consider the output. Freezing action is capable with either based on your settings, flash power, and proximity of light.

    Robert you compared Flashpoint/Godox AD600 to Orlit/Jinbei? Seems like Orlit ergonomics are more like the Profoto B1. Orlit is newer line, at least in the US. Both imported by Adorama. Thank you.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  7 років тому +1

      Hey Art. I haven't put much interest into the Orlit because it is designed more to work with the Canon 600's and I'm a Nikon shooter. I did email Jinbei so I could try since many expressed interest, but unfortunately never received a response. It seems as though the Orlit was Jinbei's response to the AD600 and will work great if someone is already invested in Canon 600 EX-RT's, otherwise I still find the Godox X series far more complete. And I think the AD200 is far and away better than Jinbei's newest portable strobe (which seems to be more like the Profoto B2).

    Good comparison, however what photographers should consider is that most professionals who use Profoto gear on a daily basis rent the equipment. So if someone like me travels from L.A. to N.Y., I can rent the gear I'm comfortable using and hire a local assistant who will also be familiar with Profoto. If I want to try a specific modifier that I don't use often, I can usually rent it first. I'm almost positive that Godox gear is not rentable in any major rental house in the USA. That's a major benefit that shouldn't be overlooked for those on tight budgets.

    I assist a photographer who shoots with a Canon 1D X. When doing sports action posters where he needs to freeze motion, he'll use 3 paul c buff Einstein heads for his key and a single one for his him. The recycle rate at the lower power settings lets him motordrive his strobes. They seem to keep up with the Canon 1DX pretty well. I was wondering if the AD600's recycle rate could keep up with a motordrive at lower power settings? Your thoughts please.

      +Mauriã Sabbado I'm not going to upload it separately, but I'm happy to describe the project. I had a client who managed leather for Chrysler. They had to document the color hues of all their leathers and the amount it varies. They also had to show acceptable levels of scarring and skin stains. Since it was for commercial purchasing and all about the range of color within the leather, I needed perfect color accuracy from the light to avoid inconsistencies.

    Great video but for those who use Paul C Buff's Alien Bees how do these lights compare to Einstiens? Only serious difference I'm seeing is the internal battery. Otherwise. the Einstein are cheaper, more Power output and shoots TTL as well. Plus I don't have to switch mounts for all my modifiers. Your thoughts?

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  7 років тому +1

      Personally for me PCB innovation is gone so I moved away from the company. The digibee was a joke in terms of a modern release.
      As for your points, "cheaper" is not true when you consider you would need a battery as well to use it outdoors. That kind of explains the price gap between Xplor 600 and Einstein. Even moreso when you consider control, the Cyber Commander is far more expensive than an R2/X1 controller.
      The Einstein can't do HSS.
      I'm not sure that the Einstein truly is more powerful either. Just because it's 640 "watts" doesn't mean it puts out more light, as demonstrated in this video.
      Also, i'm not sure about other brands but as far as I know TTL never worked on the Einstein for Nikon.
      That's my thoughts!

    • @RobertSilverPhotography
      @RobertSilverPhotography 7 років тому

      Thank for responding to my questions. Great video. But how is the customer service? I feel like I can reach out and touch someone at PCB. Calling them in China or only through email i can't say gives me a lot of sense of security if I need help or replacement or a fix. PCB services is great. That's a factor, nothing lasts for ever. I rather pay extra for good service - just playing devil's advocate here. I have Alien Bees and PCB mounts on all my modifiers (not Bowens) and im trying to avoid that change.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  7 років тому

      +Robert Silver Photography Godox customer service is definitely lacking, but Flashpoint / cheetah does a great job bridging that gap in the US, pixapro in UK, strobepro in Canada.

    I ripped this from a forum and confirmed it works perfectly to double the power of your Godox or Flashpoint for $20!!! I have two Xplor 600's and with this hack I essentially have 2400 watts to play with. Take that sun!! I wish i knew about this hack earlier so I'm posting it around for other people to enjoy.
    "BTW for those with a particularly 'geeky' inclination, there is a way of increasing the maximum power you get out of this flash when using high shutter speeds.
    You need....
    1) The XTR-16 receiver (US$20)
    2) To switch off the internal receiver to bypass HSS
    3) Set the flash to manual 1/1 maximum power and set the Godox/flashpoint as a slave unit.
    4) Add a flash delay (custom function 0) of 23 to your X1T-S trigger.
    At that point you are hypersyncing the flash (taking advantage of its t.01 1/220 flash duration) and can shoot up to 1/8000th of a second. The advantages of doing this are twofold....
    1) You gain a stop of power. Not a lot but it is the equivalent of using a 1200ws light in HSS which is very useful in bright sunlight
    2) You use less battery and you can shoot twice as many shots at full power before you overheat the flash (100)."

    Hello Robert, love the channel. Ok, I shoot Nikon, but pondering about buying a Sony 6300 in the near future. Will the FlashPoint work with the Sony camera and it's a Nikon mono light version. Lastly, I own several Nikon SB800 flashes, this monolight flash Nikons flashes using the Sony camera?

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  7 років тому

      +Detroit Don Using a Godox X1T-S / Flashpoint R2 Sony trigger will give you full Sony functionality. The AD600 / Xplor 600 builds in all the brands functionality so you can use any camera as long as you have the appropriate trigger.
      As for Nikon SB-800s, if you get an Godox X1R-N or Flashpoint R2 Receiver for Nikon, you can control the SB-800 from the X1T-N or R2 controller.

    • @robhallphoto
