      Robert Hall Photography , I’m looking at the AD600pro after selling my Broncolor Siros L, too expensive to keep for the amount I’m shooting. And I can’t seem to find an answer to this question anywhere:
      Will the Stable color mode work in combination with HSS?
      I almost exclusively shoot HS(S) and whether it’s highly stable at sync speed is of little interest, however, at HSS I need it to be stable also, can’t see anywhere that anyone has tested color accuracy using HSS.
      Thanks👍🏽

    FINALLY an objective comparison of these systems. Been looking into getting my first couple lights and I just wish I'd found this earlier! Everyone else seems to be biased or sponsored one way or another and trashing on the lights they don't own. Appreciate the real data and the (seemingly) relatively unbiased comparison.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  5 років тому +1

      Thanks man, if anything I'm a little biased to Godox because it's what I'm most familiar with, and what I personally choose because it satisfies my need for a speedlight and bigger strobes, all on one system. And I'm more geared to go the value route as well. But, at the end of the day numbers don't lie!

      Neil Snape why do you use ad600pro when you have Broncolor??

  • @georgeli722
    @georgeli722 6 років тому +10

    Good review. I agree with all the points. Personally I'm a profoto user - shooting commercially means I must have the reliability that profoto offers. If a head fails, I can drive to the nearest studio and rent one for the day, if I drop a head (as i did a few months ago) I can get it serviced whereever I am in the world. Also, I hate the recessed tube as well because it does block the light output, but on the other hand I love it becuase it means it's that much harder to damage the flash tube. I have damaged several broncolour heads both in studio and on location and I think any other exposed light head will be subject to similar dangers. It's just one less thing to worry about on a busy set. Also, I aboslutely adore the profoto mount system. It's quick, secure, and zoomable. The issues I've had with broncolour is that it's unintuitive to use and can be slow to fit. And Paul c Buff had the old pincer mount things that sagged with heavy modifiers... Anywho, it's all about how it fits into one's individual workflow and in my case, about reliability in the commercial world. Nice review!

    • @dreamteamtokyo
      @dreamteamtokyo 2 місяці тому

      I try to make this exact point all the time and it just flies over people's heads. Professionals use Profoto. I'm on the Internet arguing with a kid and he's telling me Godox is better and cheaper. I've dropped Profoto heads before with nothing as little as a scratch. Popped off 140 more shots with it and collected my payday. Rarely do I ever smash a flash tube. If that Godox fell, that plastic thing is shattering the flash into pieces.

    Now that was an fantastic unbiased review Mr Robert Hall! I love the way you broke it down to the differences in how each stood in a variety of categories. I personally own a Broncolor Siros L 400w. And I LOVE this unit! The quality of light it produces is immaculate! And like yourself, I am not bias when it comes to a review or opinion. You were absolutely correct about that rear knob being exposed beyond the protective rear of the strobe. It’s something I noticed and was a little concerned of. One other noticeable thing is the finish/coating on the unit. It scratches easily. Other than that, it’s a fantastic unit. I would like to point out some other interesting notes about its features. Though the unit I own is the 400w version, it’s more of a fair comparison to the Profoto B1X or maybe even the Godox AD600 pro due to using the unit at its highest power setting when using HSS in Godox and Profoto’s case and HS in Broncolor’s. When using these features, the units that are using HSS cannot function at full power as the unit using HS is able to work at its highest power setting. Which sort of balances things out in that category. But as long as one is shooting at the sync speed of 1/250 and below, than the Profoto and Godox wins, hands down as far as output.
    Oh, and one other thing with Broncolor. These units can be stopped down to 4 watts seconds (800w) and 2 watts seconds (400w). That’s close to a candle light. The range on this unit is amazing.
    Also, when you talked about the overall spread of light with an exposed light tube vs a recessed light tube, it appears (from the still Photo) that Godox has the better overall spread of light, which in my eyes, made Godox the winner there.
    The overall reason I went with broncolor is because of the way I see myself using the equipment now and in the future. The types of photography I am getting into is product photography and advertisement. Along with hair and makeup products. And as far as I’m concerned, all 3 units are winners depending on any photographers needs, budget, and likes.
    Thanks again for that great review.
    👍

      @robhallphoto  6 років тому +1

      Yeah i did also find the exterior doesn't take well to abuse. I'm wondering if the 400w version would meter exactly a stop below the 800w. I'm assuming so with how accurate Broncolor is. That being said, the 400w version would still be the most powerful light (in standard sync).

    • @TimberedSplash
      @TimberedSplash 6 років тому

      Robert Hall Photography Wow! I did read somewhere about the power difference between the 400w version and the 800w version, but I found it hard to believe that between 400w and 800w which is double the power, makes the 800w version only 1 stop better than the 400w version. Interesting stuff there. If you happen to get your hands on a Broncolor 400w version, I would love to see a video of you doing some tests with it.
      And thanks for all the great work you put in your channel to spread knowledge and teachings so that others can perfect their craft.

    • @mariapablo2127

      Mr. Hudson, what is it you like about the Broncolor Siros L 400W?

    • @TimberedSplash
      @TimberedSplash 6 років тому

      It's been a few months since I have had them, so I have played around with them a bit and discovered all the cool stuff I was able to do with the features of it's patented Scoros technology. Along with color consistency, the power range is amazing. For the 400w strobes, the lowest power setting is 4ws which is phenomenal when one doesn't need too much light. That's almost similar to using candle light to illuminate one's subject. With many other mono lights, one's options are limited when shooting in a small place or studio where the mono lights cannot be moved farther back to cut down the amount of light. Then I played around with it's HyperSync technology for faster than shutter sync speed. Instead of pulsing the light, as one would have with High Speed Sync (HSS), Broncolor, like Paul C Buff, uses a single timed duration flash. The advantage here is that the strobe doesn't drop power. I was able to shoot at sync speeds above 1/250, and up to 1/8000 at the strobe's highest power setting. Another feature I like, and will start to use more is it's Flash Cut Off feature in which the unit will calculate the flash duration for a given output and allow one to fire off 50 flashes in a minute. Someday, I would like to do some action shoots with dancers, skateboarders, cyclists, etc.

    I think it's whatever works for you and your budget. I like the Godox system to use with speedlights and AD200 but the AD600 when needing the large output. The total system cost of the Godox can be had for under $1500 (AD600, AD200, trigger and 860). They can all communicate well together for larger shots. For strictly studio, I like the DB800; the modelling light (75W) can really act as a continuous light and really don't need HSS in a studio.
    I have yet to need more light than the AD600 but for the times I "made it work", looking back, I would have been better off with a second light coming at a different direction.

    Hi Robert! You do a great job on your reviews, but one review I have not seen is Godox ad600pro vs Godox ad600 max. power output metered comparison with a light modifier such as a beauty dish, umbrella, softbox, or some other modifier. Could you do this or do you have results with a link so we can view? Much appreciated and thanks!

    I went with Godox(Technically I went with Flashpoint) because I shoot with Fuji cameras and they had the best ecosystem available. From speedlights to my recently acquired Flashpoint Studio300 monolight, one remote gives full control of them all. Power settings, TTL(though I never use it) and HSS. I can even control them from a Flashpoint Zoom-Mini(or any other Godox/Flashpoint) speedlight. The only reason I never bought the original AD600 was that my speedlights handled any "on location" work well enough. As I said in your first review of the AD600Pro, I'm now just waiting for an extension head to become available and will likely pick one up then...and maybe a 200 or two.

    • @jaimeduncan6167
      @jaimeduncan6167 6 років тому

      Jimmy Hill not really, the have the best ecosystem if you go down , the Goddox. Packs , for example , are very bad. They don’t have snitching good up to 1600ws etc.of course if you are not going to a shoot with a bunch of assistants...

    • @jimmyhill9591
      @jimmyhill9591 6 років тому

      Let me clear up my original post. Godox has the best ecosystem for MY uses, but everyones uses will vary. I primarily shoot headshots in my home studio or on location in clients offices. The Godox ecosystem allows me to use one remote to fully control my speedlights and my monolight. There aren't any other systems out there which allow that, AND are fully compatible with Fuji TTL/HSS, that I am aware of.
      When you say "They don’t have snitching good up to 1600ws", I assume you meant "something" up to 1600ws. For my WORK, I've never even needed full power from my 300ws monolight. I bought it for the faster recycling times(compared to my speedlights), and the 600Pro would just be a portable alternative or for those rare times I'm outdoors and MIGHT want a little more power. That said, Flashpoint does sell a 1200ws studio strobe(Rapid 1200 HSS R2) which works with the Godox remotes for those looking for more power. I'm not trying to overpower the sun or light up an event space.

    I started with the Godox brand and I think I'm going to stay with Godox. I was tempted to go with Profoto but Profoto doesn't seem to offer that much more than what you could get with the Godox. I have Godox AD 200pro, 400 pro, and 600 pro. The build quality might not be up to Profoto's standards but it's solid.
    I have to disagree with you when you said you would prefer the Godox ad 600 pro screen on the back. I actually dropped my ad 600 pro and it fell on its back. It hit the concrete pretty hard. And the ad 600 pro was still working without any problems. But, the battery itself was broken afterwards. A cheaper replacement than trying to fix the 600 pro. So I'm glad that the screen wasn't on the back or else I would've lost the screen.
    And with the screen on the side it gives Godox an advantage since the ad 400 and 600 can have an ac adapter attached to the back for when I'm using them in a studio. Profoto doesn't seem to have this feature which I love so much for studio work. And I already bought a replacement bulb for both the ad 400 and 600 just in case I break the bulb. Easy bulb replacement.
    And with Godox releasing the ad 300 pro and ad 100, a photographer has so many choices for strobes. Especially the smaller strobes best for tight spaces like the ad 200 and the new ad 100.

    Robert - Great job on this video. You covered a lot of material and decision factors. Any thoughts about flash/trigger consistency with the power controllers in both standard and HSS modes? Does one have more dropped frames versus another due the flash not firing? Or are all 3 so consistent that this isn't an issue? Thanks for helping everyone out with all your info.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  6 років тому +1

      I think all 3 are consistent so long as you are aware that with Godox HSS has more potential to put your flash into heat protection mode. One way Godox reduced cost is by using a "counter" for heat protection rather than actually measuring heat. The Pro has greatly improved in this regard but i know many people struggled with this before. The Siros and Profoto are extremely consistent and I never experienced an issue (though I've used them a lot less).

    • @JayWatson
      @JayWatson 6 років тому

      Thanks for the follow up and warning about the internal counter. Nice to know you didn't notice dropped frames. 100 at full power seems reasonable for the Pro with outdoor location work if that number is accurate.

  • @michaelwiseii4552

    The cost factor is huge between these lights and if that’s a roadblock then the Godox system is perfect.
    With that being said you may be saving money up front but you could end up spending more should your light fail. Godox treats these strobes as disposable lights, if anything goes wrong you throw it away and buy a new one (sound like Youngnuo?). Service is simply not a option even when buying from Adorama. Adorama will replace the light should anything happen to it within the warrantee period but after that time you will need to replace the light.
    I personally have had two AD600’s get knocked over (long story and in the end it was poor planning on my part) and Adorama quickly replaced both units. When calling in I did ask what the repair charge would be if it was out of the warrantee period and was told they do not repair them.
    When buying any photography gear there are disposable items like umbrellas and gaffer tape but we are talking about a strobe that is close to $1000. Is that something that you are willing to simply toss in the trash and replace should anything go wrong?
    I love my four AD600’s and three AD200’s but after seeing there is no repair service being offered I am starting to question my purchases.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  6 років тому +8

      I had a discussion the other day with someone how I am actually more interested in cheaper, "disposable" equipment rather than more robust gear that could potentially last decades.
      Technology is moving so fast. HSS in monolights and hybrids is only a few years old. Its not long before the global shutter changes everything in digital photography. Done right it will render HSS useless as flash will be able to sync with any shutter speed without issue.
      I don't want to be stuck with lights that I paid an arm and a leg for that cannot incorporate technologies of the future. I would much rather pay less now and happily ditch it in the semi-near future when taking advantage of new technologies require new lighting equipment.

    • @michaelwiseii4552
      @michaelwiseii4552 6 років тому +4

      Robert Hall Photography I am not really using these lights for HSS but you are on point. I would imagine at some point soon syncing your cameras to the lights will no longer be an issue. The main reason I moved to the Godox system was the price, built in power and triggering system as well as the fact I was under the impression that Adorama would service the light (I purchased the Flashpoint light). I just want to make sure people understand that what they are spending money on and what type of service they should expect should anything go wrong.
      Thank you so much for the information that you put out there. It helped me decide to make the move to the Flashpoint 600’s (4) and 200’s (3). I have been using them for the last 6 months and love them so far.

      This discussion is 2y old, but it's still prominent on this video… Hint… GET AN EXTENSION HEAD. No one should be putting a 600 Pro at the top of a stand or on the end of a boom. Period. At least losing an extension head would be $109 lost as opposed to $900. I got a Black Friday bundle with the extension head, and from the moment I rigged up this massive lighting unit, I knew 100% the body was never going on top of a stand or modifier end of a boom arm. Period. I do use it as a counterweight indoors but plan to put a stop to even that. Point being, either employ an assistant or get an extension head.

    This was a great review! I know the video is 8 months old but I had a question on one thing that wasn't touched on. I know the original B1 did not support battery charging during use. Does the B1x or Siros 800L have an AC adaptor or the ability to charge during use if you want to multi-purpose the lights for studio and on the move shooting? I fond through Google the AD600 has an AC adapter pack so that adds in multi-purpose to that light but is it possible to use either of the other two in a charge-through setup?

    You might also add an ODS (OverDrive Sync) by Phottix. Same thing as HS in Pocket Wizzards, but delay is aplicable directly on Odin, without the need of using PC and software.

    • @robhallphoto

      Same goes for Godox. Any trigger system with "HS" is capable on any flash, because it just changes the timing, not the function of the flash. Oddly enough Godox implemented this function on the X1 trigger, but not on the X-Pro. I just stuck with the native options.

    Ok, I watched the whole film. Very nicely done comparison. Very well thought out methodology. Thank you. I also saw somewhere below someone said that you are the only one with whom Godox is still communicating in terms of marketing to the western world :D. Good job then :). And in that regard, I would have a suggestion to pass to Godox in terms of their trigger development. I think it would be nice to add another 5 buttons on the right side of XPro and use it as a preset buttons that allow to remember power, zoom, mode, channel and group mode (5 or 16). And in fact any changeable setting that can be made on XPro. This would be very helpful for event photographers that often times have to work in few different "zones of light", for example - hotel lounge, event promo wall, and event hall.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  6 років тому +2

      Definitely a great idea Jakub. I've told them directly that I think they need a trigger that has bluetooth without an A1. That way you could use the app (which they still need to design for Android) as a memory recall for quickly changing setups between different groups.

    • @jakubjackiewicz1795
      @jakubjackiewicz1795 6 років тому +1

      This is also a great idea, but I would also like to have an option of having this functionality in a standalone device (Presets I mean). This way changing zones would be as easy as one click, without the hassle of using phone and remembering to charge it before gig (but this is actually a must-do behaviour these days I think ;) ).

    robert, there is one thing, as far as I am aware (marketing and statements in videos) Broncolor is NOT meant to do a lot of hss, for this they rig a different system, you "patch" multiple Packs together, ie like a wireless A/B group in speedlight terms; but in their case the battery pack, you 'link' them, and number them, so like a complex firework show, each fires in a sequential manner, THAT is the fast duration, max duration of each unit, 4 firing in sequence, so the theory is you fire one, meanwhile the first re-charges it's capacitor bank, so you have no mis-fire, or blank shot, as the charging is done while another is discharging it's assigned burst of light.
