David's angry rant is just so on point! And Johnny's gentle pat on Rob's shoulder, "When you gonna realize he's not interested?" 😂😂😂
I want to reassure you that I think this is the only episode where Johnny Vegas feels over the top. Perhaps I'm just more agreeable, but he seems to work in every other appearance, balanced out. But if you want an episode where two different styles of humour and personalities compliment each other heavily, the exchanges and contrasts between David Mitchell and Ross Noble in the series H episode "Health and Safety" is worth a watch.
At this point Johnny was still drinking. I cant remember when he stopped but I believe that he kept up the persona for a time before phasing into his own true personality that we see today
From what I can find, he had a 10 year old kid in 2015 "who forced him to stop drinking and to be a dad" (his words) so that would be around 2004/05. His ex-wife says he would drink for two days solidly but stopped around 2005 when his kid was born and he got divorced.
Series G was recorded/aired over 2009/10.
Though he apparently did start drinking and comfort eating again after and stopped in 2010 when he went on a diet and cleaned himself up, so he was probably drinking around the time of this episode, but not quite as much as he did.
@@SaintPhoenixx To be fair "not as much as he did" is a fuckofalot. In the 90s he was completely out of control. Some of his stories are pretty out there.
I'm glad he's come out the other end in one piece. Its pretty clear he's had some struggles with his persona and the expectations people had of him back then.
There are two Kansas Cities. There is the one in Missouri and then there's a Kansas City right across the river in Kansas. I think they are technically the same city.
Learned that from Last of Us. And isn't the bigger part of the city more in Missouri
Rob Brydon channeling his inner Colin Robinson with his Elvis story.
The bouba/kikki thing is famous in linguistics (almost as famous as the fourth floor). I have little education in linguistics, but I am fascinated by the subject and have read a lot.
I do have a degree in chemistry, though I don't work in the field, and chirality (the orange/lemon question) is quite interesting.
David's bewildered "That's witchcraft" kills me.
This was Jonny’s first appearance on QI, and there comes a point in the discussion about oranges being left-handed lemons in which Jonny quietly says, “Do they make special scissors for both?” That is the genius of Michael Pennington, aka Jonny Vegas. He is an absurdist of supreme ability. Over the years, Jonny’s persona has softened from the early version in which he was a drunken, obnoxious, self-pitying blowhard to the current version, who is still somewhat fragile, but leans heavily on absurdity.
This is actually Johnny's third appearance - he previously appeared in Series E Episode 3 "Eating" and Series F Episode 4 "Fight or Flight".
Thanks for the correction.
@@IAmN00bHearMeRoar Johnny going for the more wacky answers (which were closer) shows both his underated cleverness and allowed Alan to be a bit more thinking serious in this episode.
Genius is used all too frequently these days, i guess anyone of superior intelligence to the beholder can be considered as a genius. Vegas to me is a moron
I can confirm carrot is 'moron' in Welsh.
I have a sudden urge to find someone who is an absolute carrot.
Ian Flemming took the name James Bond from a book that written by James Bond about birds of the Caribbian
Bringing TOGETHER the dumb and the 'smart.' THE oxymoron ? = The 1 minute 28 second vid: ''George Carlin on Our Similarities,'' by Ammar Khan
Knowing the range of lefthandedness is like knowing the range of autistics, like, it’s a wide range because only so much can be noticed when a good number of them will have been taught to just behave the ‘normal’ way and might not even know they are. between being missed and being forcibly supressed about 20% is the estimate, saying 70-90% is also a decent guess
I would highly recommend Qi series P episode 1 called “Panimals”. A certain Superman related guest gets Jupitus in a spin lol. Loving your videos Neil, much love from the UK
All over it, Rachael! I reacted to that great episode about 8 months ago. Unfortunately, about 6 months ago, whoever owns the copyright to it told YT to block it. Thanks for the support!!
Place your bets now, will Rob do a Ronnie Corbett impression or will he manage to just keep it in for once.
Not quite as bad as Hugh on MTW with his Savile impressions
I quite like Johnny being off the rails.
I'm pretty sure that Johnny Vegas did have alcohol problems.
Yeah that's putting it lightly.
A lot of the Vegas gibberish was not in the normal edition of this episode, sometimes watching the XL version isn’t the best idea.
I love David Mitchell and I completely get why Victoria is totally in love with him.
Hey, you've been too Powell's! Best bookstore evar! (Yeah, proud Portlander here 🙂 )
The best!
In a lot of languages, I'll pick English..
It's a thing. babies say "ma" or "da"
It's a thing babies do..
Ma = mine cuddle me
Da = him over there
Stephen was wrong, the octopus has no tentacles. It's all arms.
Because Johnnie's maad rants are so unpredictable that the elves never preempt them so he rarely has deductions for obvious answers
I think you're confusing Ben Miller with Brian Cox re: CERN. Miller read physics at Cambridge but never completed his PhD.
Cox worked at CERN and is a professor of Particle Physics at the University of Manchester.
Moron is carrot in Welsh.
Sadly I don't think that intelligence is valued in British society as much as you think. Quiz culture just stems from pub culture, and really comes down to remembering facts rather than intelligence
I guess that’s actually positive, because not only do people value facts, but they appreciate the *nuanced* truth… the actual fact instead of the common mistake, the updated fact, the details of a fact, the exceptions.
I almost didn’t watch because this was a Johnny Vegas one, he tended to ruin any programme he was on in the past, he’s a lot better now
Since they were using the word 'moron', who better to have as a guest than vegas? I don't find him at all funny, just a rambling drunk desperately trying to be funny by being whacky.
He has an audience and the less said about that the better.
