@@dude4173 Yeah I slightly regret this comment. I think at the time I had noticed that some interviewers didn't really listen to what their guest was saying and had a tendency to reel off a list of pre-written questions and casually agree with everything being said rather than taking an actively curiosity. Everyone saying that this doesn't apply unless it was still the 90's, you're wrong. The only thing that's changed is that the industry has a tighter hold on whose allowed to make a ton of money on selling songs. Fortunately, there are still TONS of bands out there that follow in his footsteps. Just go out to live shows of bands you hear touring ALL the time. They don't have lots of recorded music, they don't sell a bunch of t-shirts, but when they come to town, they're sure as hell gonna sell the place out. Bands like Cage the Elephant, Streetlight Manifesto, the Dirty Heads, just to name a few, (and these are all still relatively mainstream) are all totally successful in their own right. They may not be on every radio station, they may not top anything by Billboards, but they have insanely loyal fan bases who will stop at nothing to keep the bands alive off their ticket sales so they can KEEP touring and KEEP playing music which is what it's all really about. Peace!

A Squire Strat is all you need, and all 3 only cost a total of $400 which I paid for myself. I got a free 40W amp for free, and a free Casio keyboard with weighted keys. You just need to be dedicated enough not to cry when guitar center tries to gip you and do some real research, hell I got an Epiphone bass for $90 because the kid didn't know you could fix a tuning peg! Music is for rich LAZY kids, but if you're poor and dedicated, you'll be fine. Quit raining on people's parades.
Not wrong. Unless you have an audience that still swears to buying cd's, you do NOT make serious money on streaming. You need to stream 2BILLION streams + to get Spotify to pay $5 million, and of course, for most, there are many expenses that needs to be taken out before getting starry eyed. Been in the business for 30 years, Dave is absolutely 100 correct. People are gettin what he is saying twisted, they think he's talking about money.... he's not! he's talking about getting out there do what you love, playing your music. You define what the meaning of success is for yourself, for Dave it believe that it's always been about the music first, everything else second. You have to realize that because he loved being a performing musician, way before Nirvana, money was bound to be by default at some point because they were doing everything right, played all the clubs, built a fan base, attracted label attention. Dave made some really good points here.. Too many bands that I've seen don't have the energy/driving sound in there music .To get to be a bad ass (doesn't mean groupies, drugs, drinking) you have to play as hard as you can with an attitude and you have to play it really well..... So many want to play but just playing the notes without putting any extra effort into it isn't going to make you stand out amongst the rest. Give the notes and music some attitude and play it hard as you can. Your musicianship as well as performance will improve and learn as much as you can about the instrument you choose....There are too many rock bands out there but only a few will stand out and become successful...Dave gave some really good insight into this.Cheers!
I really wish they wouldnt have cut this interview up into different segments on here, and theres a lot missing. There used to be a video of this whole thing. I'm not exactly a fan of nirvana or the foo fighters but Dave Grohl's heart is in the right spot. He's a smart, keen guy. If I was 1/4 as successful I'd die happy
beautiful and excellent advice Dave, he's dead on, my band plays a ton of 90's rock and the area I live in adheres to that rock sound quite well, im not a pro but a solid intermediate drummer and being able to smash off covers and get recognition from people after shows telling me how tight and awesome our band sounded is all I need to fulfill my soul, im a realist.. heck its a cover band but along side the rest of my life its a perfect additive, during and after the shows Steven you don't hit on groupies, groupies flock over to talk to you, that's what happens when you deliver a solid performance doing something you love and have passion in that, the people greatly appreciate a good live band these days cause there is a ton of butcher bands out there
He’s absolutely spot on, when Todd Rundgren was asked something similar, he said exactly the same. You have to play live and you will get a following. I’m too old now to start a live career, but I’m quite happy always trying to become a better musician rather than a star! When you’re recording and playing yourself you can pretend you are. 😂Cheers 👍
Dave's simplicity reflects his genius. Not only does this affirm my personal feelings of respect for a guy that did not let major setbacks slow him down at all but it proves to everyone, musicians and non-musicians alike that your attitude in life determines everything, your work, your image and ultimately your career! Takeaway point: In life, YOU'VE GOT TO BE BADASS!
This is true with all artistic careers. You just gotta do your thing and be badass at it. Wether its music or filmmaking or acting or dancing or painting etc.
Absolute charisma. A guy that everytime he talks, everyone keep quiet and just listen what he says. And above all, a great musician. Long live Foo Fighters! 💪
DAVE GROHLS POINT IS TO JUST PLAY WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND YOUR SOUL , AND SOONER OR LATER YOU WILL GET SOMEWHERE IN THE WORLD OF MUSIC OR ENTERTAINMENT IN GENERAL.
David Grohl is friggin' awesome, no BS....always brings it, and he also above all things.....seems like a guy you would want to have a beer with and just talk about anything
I love the respect Dave has for Kurt/Nirvana in saying he wouldn't be where he is if it weren't for Nirvana. But I'd like to say, Dave you are good in your own right, I think you would be where you are if it had only been Foo Fighters from the beginning. Daves love for music is runs deeper then a crack whores vagina on a busy night. Thanks for everything you have blessed us with Dave Grohl.
That's just it though. There are a lot of excellent musicians that never really have much success. Dave seems practical enough to realize (and admit) that he got opportunities he otherwise wouldn't have had by being in the right place and the right time. That doesn't mean he didn't maximize those opportunities through hard work and skill.
So true!!! I took my band back to the streets and success was immediate! the people of al ages and countries loves and buys our CDs no filters, intermediaries nor special PA or lighting pure Funk on the cobblestones. since then we have been called to perform at private parties and festivals all around. it's all relevant, to me putting out my music and having people appreciate it and especially sharing all of this with my friends and band mates, is success! and that is the point I think Dave Grohl is making. it has nothing to do with money, magazine covers, talent shows and all that crap which distracts artist from reaching the point. so thanx Dave for putting things back in prospective!
I never intentionally began to play instruments just so that I can be popular or become famous, I just wanted the knowledge of playing an instrument and play an songs that I wanted to play.
He is true man and held to his believes .good for you Dave your damnn right let music do you're speaking .that's a true musician with talent now rock'em Dave
To Dave: Thank you Sir! This just lifted my spirit and confidence to another level! I love playing music and want to get better at it. It's just that I deal with so many self-defeating thoughts and bs in the head. I once ran into Jonathan Moffet (MJ's drummer) who gave me a similar advice - Gotta be a badass! The music scene needs more inspiring people and leader like you! 🤘
adviceS. This guy really loves and knows what is music. He also doesn't gives a shit to anything else. That's all I ask for a musician these days... He inspires me since I was 12. Thanks.
1:05 I came here from a video of a classical musician complaining about people just offering gigs for exposure... This quote is something that I think a lot of "pro" musicians need to here. Initially, no one is going to just hand you stacks of cash for playing music. You have to be doing it for the right reasons, otherwise it will not be worth it trying to compete against other bands who are doing it out of love/passion.
if any of you actually know anything about the live event industry, its actually doing pretty well right now. Because artists are being hurt by piracy and illegal downloading, they have to revert to other sources in order to make money. One of them is through live events. recently I went to a Cover night at my school, and the first act was terrible. It wasnt because they dont love music, or that they are untalented, it was just boring and completely unforgettable. They did nothing unique or different, and it was a waste of my time. The second act though, i mean WOW, it was dope! You could just feel the energy of the band. They took risks, and looked good doing it. Immediately after they played, I wanted to look them up and check out their music. My point is, ANY of us after hearing an "opening" or "smaller" band that played an awesome show, would want to do the same thing. When you look at tours like Warped Tour, a lot of the bands that now headline them got big because of Warped Tour.
I'm pretty sure Dave was talking about technology as pertaining to being used in their production of their songs and music in general. It's overwhelmingly obvious that in the internet age that we live in that technology is paramount these days. I really think he a little smarter than to think you can ignore the world you live in when it is so technology driven.
Everyone's taking Dave's words so strictly and on point, when what he was basically trying to say, was that even though you have all this good technology at your fingertips, you still gotta realize that doing live shows, whether that be at some dirty little bar, or a stadium, are still some damn good experiences, and if you've been to a few concerts of any kind recently, it's easy to see why. He's not saying to STICK with live shows the entire goddamn time, it's just the point that no matter what decade we're in, playing live is going to impact the audience in some way, especially if you've got talent to go along with it. The ones who keep saying that live shows are dead, and only worked in the 90's, well... keep on assuming that, I hope you enjoy your life of thinking that concerts are dead, and nobody goes out in groups to see their favorite bands when they go on a tour, or an interesting little obscure rock band might be in town.
My advice for anyone interested in music or anything else entertainment related: Never give up on your dream, but also understand, accept, and assume that you will probably not ever be able to make a living from your art alone. Almost everyone who grew up playing music wishes they could do it for a living, but the average person only needs so much new music. As a result, making music alone for a living always has been and always will be a one-in-a-million chance. However, that dosen't mean you ever have to stop playing music and stay open to the possibility of one day making a living from music, nor does it even mean you have to identify with your day job.
Yeah, do what most guys and me do, get a job, work on the side as much as you can. But never ever stop creating and putting out that music/art. It'll wear you out and you'll be exhausted most of the time, but atleast you'll be somewhat stable financially, busy and content. Who knows, maybe one day you'll even get that traction and not have to work as much, thats my only real hope, to be selfsufficient doing what i love. A lot of people expect to much/ dont do enough for it, thats the downfall for so many. If you suceed you suceed, if you arent as successful, atleast keep trying.
Seriously, many people are missing the point of this video. Dave Grohl's message is not hard to understand - play with passion, play with attitude, and do it because you love it. Whether you think his point is too 'naive' or not, he is to an extent not wrong - just go out and do it.

i fucking love how much he swears - "i just beat the fucking piss out of that thing and people saw it."
Ngamoe Morgan IK
ITS SO FUCKING AMAZING
One of the best answers … priceless… and not just for music
I love his way of being straight to the point!
This...is what i needed.
Agreed Mr. Grohl!
I adore this man so much
I love the simplicity
Dave Grohl was the reason I picked up a guitar, Foo Fighters are still my favourite band and they're such a cool bunch of people
I love the respect Dave has for Kurt/Nirvana in saying he wouldn't be where he is if it weren't for Nirvana. But I'd like to say, Dave you are good in your own right, I think you would be where you are if it had only been Foo Fighters from the beginning. Daves love for music is runs deeper then a crack whores vagina on a busy night. Thanks for everything you have blessed us with Dave Grohl.
That's probably the best comment on this page.
True. A lot of the comments here are stupid ass opinions destined to start a war.
This has to be one of my favorite fucking videos I've ever seen. Hands down.
I think I just found a new role model and inspiration.
Real talk !!!!
I never intentionally began to play instruments just so that I can be popular or become famous, I just wanted the knowledge of playing an instrument and play an songs that I wanted to play.
I love him.
He is true man and held to his believes .good for you Dave your damnn right let music do you're speaking .that's a true musician with talent now rock'em Dave
I totally agree with it, this man is a legend
To Dave: Thank you Sir! This just lifted my spirit and confidence to another level! I love playing music and want to get better at it. It's just that I deal with so many self-defeating thoughts and bs in the head. I once ran into Jonathan Moffet (MJ's drummer) who gave me a similar advice - Gotta be a badass! The music scene needs more inspiring people and leader like you! 🤘
I’ve been trying to moonwalk.
Needed this..
Dave's fxxking awesome in this video
ok love this guy. honest and passionate about his craft. hence I love the food fighters
This is extremely good advice for all paths in life.
Straight wisdom, right there.
im in love with this man!!!
Great advice right here!
adviceS.
This guy really loves and knows what is music. He also doesn't gives a shit to anything else. That's all I ask for a musician these days... He inspires me since I was 12. Thanks.
These are some awesome videos.

I came here from a video of a classical musician complaining about people just offering gigs for exposure...
When you look at tours like Warped Tour, a lot of the bands that now headline them got big because of Warped Tour.
i totally agree with this, i also love that he continuously cussing about everything
I love this man
He's mighty fine drummer too
Wow... thank you so much Dave!
Amen Dave, Thank you. I've been preaching this for years.
God damn... i wish we had more musicians like Dave.
you gotta love this man.
This really helped me out thanks Dave
Brilliant 🙏🏼
Dave Grohl...he is just awesome!
Dave is such a badass person
He reminds me from the lead singer from that movie Almost Famous
Superb advice
Still Relevant 2018
Dave is a bad ass! Love this dude!
pure gold
When the interviewer scratches his head at 1:26
*i felt that*
You had an itch as well?
Online streaming, social media and the focus on the single rather than the album have HEAVILY changed the game though, for bands starting out.
I will learn how to play drums because of you!!
I love Dave grohl...he just gets better with age..
1:26 till the end sums it right up for me Dave ty :) rock
He is a fucking legend!
Dave Grohl is a soccer mom with amazing fucking talent
Wise words from an awesome dude!
Play what you love. ✌🏼️
THANK YOU!
I think social media such as UA-cam has added an extra way for bands to get recognized.. Times have changed.
I love this guy
