He is an incredible drummer, songwriter and overall musician. He is also one of the few people that you don't get mad at his success, or jealous of it, because he is also another rare thing, a decent human being. You cheer him on, are happy for him, and you do this because you know that he would do the same for you.
Good to know all of your yt psychology degrees are working for you. I don’t cheer him on. He’s a decent drummer but I’ve always thought Foo Fighters to be 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮.
"If you're passionate and driven and focused in what you do, if you're really good at it, people will take notice." "If you're passionate and driven and focused, you can achieve anything you wanna achieve in life, because you'll figure it out." "You have to be able to take whatever it is that someone else is using, and make it your own, or just do your own thing." "There should be no right or wrong, you should be cool with what you do and how you sound." great video. thank you.
superblonde Griiiiiiind! May have not been doing it long enough on a certain scale. Depending what kind of noticed your talking about? He's not just talking music
superblonde the longer u live, the more u realize there is no such thing as luck. Don't waste time doubting the method and making excuses. I've found the harder I work, the luckier I get. There's always better musicians and usually there's a reason or reasons why they aren't successful and it typically doesn't have anything to do with talent or ability. It's usually attitude and likeability that holds people back.
Guilt and fear are important indicators for limitations in life. From Guilt well learn what is wrong and in turn learn to avoid it. Fear tells us not to push it too much towards discomfort or death. Understanding secondary negative emotions and over coming them through improved behaviour and replacing them with primary emotions like Joy and Happiness.

The Internet Killed Music I agree with you. I do respect David Ghrol, but his advice is fairly antiquated. The days of success from paying your dues are over. We just need to figure out a new way to make musical opportunities again, because the ones we know of are declining as we speak.
It's easy to say "touring is where it's at," but how much longer will that be a legit source of income? Before you know it, the chart toppers won't even be able to bring 100 people, and it is definitely the easiest way to burn out. I hope to get the proper equipment to utilize the internet more myself.
Amen to that! I do recall losing all my money from your I expenses when I was 20, and you are right. And being established with a fan base is just barely possible anymore, and even at that, you're just making hundreds of dollars a year. All these bands want to "pay their dues," but the days of getting discovered from doing so are gone with the wind. I have grown to embrace a boring life just working, saving money, having health insurance, etc.
There are bands that pull it off without a label. It's just rare that a group stays together long enough and everyone puts in the work to be successful without some huge label and a big signing bonus.

Same dude. Foo Fighters has such an unmatched sound and presence that is all their own, that stands out from anything else out there. It has gotten me through some of the toughest times in my life, because my problems dissolve away in that moment. Dave is kick ass.
Watching the Foos in NZ was the best concert I've been to and the Foo Fighters aren't even my favourite group. Grohl IS the epitome of inspiration. Just draws the crowd along in his journey with his interaction.
""You don't have to stand in line at the song contest on TV to become a popular musician.....To stand in front of some judge who doesn't even play an instrument on their own goddamn record.....telling you 'you're not good enough---f----that."" Everything he said was outstanding....but those lines were super outstanding.
@@edimichaelchannel1162 True. But it is still subjective. Based on what 'they' feel. Do you think that someone like Prince or Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton or Bob Dylan would've won a contest? Maybe or maybe not. Still I wouldn't put that decision in the hands of these people who have lesser musicianship and songwriting talent.
When he broke his leg, at the end... and came back out in a cast... Under Pressure... somehow, everyone filled with pride ... you could feel it. Love this guy and his band
That was so effing rock! Thanks for adding that, I had heard about it but that's the first time I have seen it. Dave is a totally dedicated achiever. He is driven and that's a massive key to success. Anybody can benefit from his wisdom and integrity.
@Urban Cowboy he started doing it without making millions and playing around the world, he started for the reward of making music. If making music is not enough then you'll probably never make it. that is his point.
Dave is such an inspiration. My doctor introduced me to Dave and has given me the tools to watch of the short clips that Dave has made to help me with my PTSD. Every time I need that extra boost I go back to his music and videos. The talents Dave shares with all of us help in more ways than what he realizes. I am very thankful for him. Thank you for the messages!
"The musician comes first" is about the value we must give to ourselves, and the love we must have for ourselves... not in a selfish way, but to remember that before of everything, the human being is the most valuable thing in the process... that phrase helped me a lot during a depression time, and I am grateful for those words.
I loved this: "Imagine Bob Dylan singing 'Blowin' in the Wind' in front of Christine Aguilera... 'uh, that's a little bit nasel-y and sharp." How many winners of "The Voice" will win the Nobel Prize?
Man, this is awesome, it's like the most inspiring video i've ever seen, not only because Dave is my favorite musician, but also because anything he says is true, and he speaks as honestly as possible of how he got success. I'd say my favorite rule is cherish your voice, dont care of what others do, dont compare yourself to the "mainstream", just do your own.
The Foo Fighters aren't necessarily my favorite band ever....they're kind of a modern rock version of "classic rock." It's all a bit too polished and friendly for my tastes...although they have many killer songs, the latest single(Run) being a prime example, and one of their best songs in years. But....despite my lukewarm interest in that band, I've always massively respected Dave as a person and musician. He's absolutely the real deal, and seems to be a genuinely great human being. There's plenty of super creative idiosyncratic musicians from his generation to draw inspiration from.....so I'm kinda glad Dave's always sidestepped that scene and those vices and instead done his own thing. It's not precisely my cup of tea, but I sure as hell respect it...and find him to be a very inspiring person. Hope he's around for a long time....this world needs his voice!
I think he'd a been a great politician, if he wasn't so honest ,I feel hes a great person at least comes off the way so maybe a actor too.Love his music though
I'm a country music singer/songwriter that has been inspired by Dave's writing and vocal/musical delivery of the greatest music I have ever heard. Without sharing too much detail, here's a short story. I had just come out of heart breaking relationship that devastated me on all levels. I was riding in a friends car and the song "The Best Of You" came on the radio and it hit me on a very positive way. I later bought the CD and played that song several times every day for months. It helped get my life back on track. Love you Dave, thanks do much.
@Matt K He doesn't have to but it's certainly not an affectation. It's how he speaks all the time. He really couldn't care less what we think. Quite right too!
I love the attitude leftists have; we love Grohl, so we'll censor him because we're so much more sincere and smarter than him, and...and well the whole human race.
"Just do it" is my favorite. I've played guitar for over a year now. I still suck but I suck in a good way. I'm constantly expanding my horizons with my playing technique and have bought a music mixing console that records. I've set up a band room with drums an Xbox and trippy posters and I basically live in that room. I've played my first guitar every day since I bought it and have loved more than any guitar I've ever played. It's a strat hss. I've learned to jam with a drummer and I'm constantly thinking about ways to play music for large audiences. Nothing can stop me from doing so. I just have to play in a band. There's no way I can't do it. I'll have to "just do it"
Great piece, Evan. And that ending was bad-ass! So glad you included it. Met Dave once in New York years back. He was the coolest ass dude I came across. What you see is what you get with him- straight up. I'm still surprised how well he made that transition from drummer to lead. That's so rare.
One of the best videos I have ever seen on UA-cam. Thank you so much that last part honestly made me cry hard. Life might kick you down but it's your soul and faith that keeps you going when your passion is gone. My word is "thrive" thanks for sharing and thanks for making me understand what an awesome person Dave is Rock on and be blessed!!
Glad you liked it Alex. :) Thank you very much for the appreciation and sharing your feelings. Awesome one word - keep #Thriving! Always #Believe. #BTA309 Shine
I literally don’t know if I’ve seen dedication like Dave breaking his leg & coming back on stage on the gurney to play. I’m blown away! Super inspiring!
Bit of a naive statement. Most musicians never get noticed, even talented ones. Dave was fortunate to get a big break with Nirvana. What’s better than being brilliant? Being lucky
"My wife turns on pandora, the pop hits station...it was Apocolyptic, I was terrified. The human race is going down such a dangerous path...people are worried about asteroids...fgit that, turn on the radio...I listen to that and I just don't hear anyone...it's devoid of anything, how can that be?..................The most important thing is, just do your own thing."
My main takeaway from all this is he just does things. He doesn't worry about whether he's ready or good enough or knows how to do it or whatever. He just jumps in the deep end and figures out the rest from there. Pretty cool.
The Foo Fighters aren't necessarily my favorite band ever....they're kind of a modern rock version of "classic rock." One thing I had forgotten (and maybe that's why even after stopping being an Internet Video creator, I still play with the software.) You do it for yourself. It's your passion, your voice, your creativity. Everyone has something. Rather it be Carpenter, Car Repair, Home Decorator, Cook, whatever. Plus as it was just stated in the James Hetfield 10 rules I am watching currently (thanks to Roku) if I don't do some video work I get grouchy. LOL. After my stroke, and continuing deteriation of the brain, I am NOT Hardcoredlw any longer. However I can still have fun doing simple magazine MTV style DVD video edits for backwoods internet ignorant friends.
Rule 8, for sure. What he said is pure gold. Everyone has an audience and as he said - they will come along regardless. You've just got to not let the J-Lo's and "Voice" nonsense get in your way. Record stuff, play shows and they will come.
I watched this video three weeks ago. Though it wasn't the first time, it banged my head and shifted my life exponentially. Thank you, Evan, for your passion and brilliant work. Dave, you f***ing rock! Time to learn to fly! Who cares how old or young you are! Just make it a happend.
I'm just a 12 y.o girl but when I'm older I want to be a rockstar just like Dave Grohl, He's my icon. Music and my guitars are the best thing that have ever happened to me. Dave is so great, he stared up his own band, wrote songs and never gave up, that's amazing. This is the best video ever. I really want to meet him!! And you have proof to never give up. That is exactly what I'm going to do. He's the best!:)

7:55 Dave holding the physical, analogue artifact of a song, one that just also happens to have what might be one of history's greatest sustained crescendo scream lines ever, from 2 1/2 til 3 minutes in.
I'm not the biggest fun of Foo but the longer I know Dave the more I admire him. I was on the concert 2 years ago during broken leg tour and hit me sooo hard. He make whole tour with broken leg almost jumping on these amazing trone, concert took over 2 hours. It comes to me - damit Dave is such a passion driving down to earth close to his fans musician. Atm I'm reading his biography and It only makes me fall in love more in that wonderfull man. Slowly but surely he become of my biggest Idols ever not only muscially but as well and mostly as a beautifull human being. Btw among others Lemmy loved him and ojust that should make a mark. Much love :*
"Cherish your voice"....There is always a reason to believe in yourself and smile when you listen to Dave Grohl. As a matter of fact the Foo Fighters' song "Walk" is my motivation song n.1. Thank you Evan for the bonuses, Pat hugging Dave means the world to an old Nirvana fan like me :)
I always get pumped up after watching Dave Grohl's inspirational videos so I pick up my guitar and after a couple of minutes realize how much I suck at playing guitar, sad life
mert balbal Pick it up again and practise, you'll get good at it... Don't try to be good, just play simple riffs than inspire you... You'll become more confident, and technique will come naturally... Compose as soon as you can. It doesn't matter how simple your songs are, your composing skills will become better with time. Just have fun, that's the key. It worked for me
Yep, agree +Victor MORLEY. I sucked at first but loved it so much I kept practicing (and by that I mean looking up tabs of songs I like on Ultimate Guitar and looked up "how to play ... " on youtube and just played and played (in my room with the door closed) and now I still suck but I suck a LOT less and I'm just good enough to enjoy playing the songs now, even if it is just to a wall.
I loved this. I'm a musician (drummer, guitarist in progress) and I already loved the Foo Fighters before hearing this, but this makes me ready to play music EVEN MORE. Thanks for making this!
Kyle bardone what if you've tried lots of stuff...sport, music, art, writing, acting, for example...and you're no good at any of them? point 1 renders all of the other points irrelevant. you can't just choose to be great at something. if you could then everyone would write songs like kurt cobain. but people don't and can't write songs like kurt cobain because he's a fucking genius songwriter. i'm sorry to be nitpicking over dave grohl, because he's a great guy and i love nirvana, but not everyone can get to be good at stuff.
I have such a problem with this, to be honest. I can't get good at anything I do, no matter how hard I try. It seems like there's this giant wall that prevents me from going anywhere. I completely understand the hopeless feeling. And yes, it's true that not everyone will be able to write music like Cobain, play like Michael Jordan, or even become President of the United States...only a select few will be able to achieve that level of success. Some people seem to possess a "natural talent" that most of us don't have. Yet that doesn't have to stop you from trying your best at everything. When you say you've tried lots of stuff...at what point did you give up? Becoming better at something is way more of a mental game than a physical one. It's really easy for you to become mentally pessimistic, which affects your physical performance, which in turn causes you to think that you aren't good enough. For me, it reaches the point where I think "natural talent" is the only way I'll be able to get better. "Oh, he's better than me at trumpet, he must have god-given chops". "Oh, he's better than me at baseball, he must a natural combination of hand-eye coordination and power". It is at that point that I, personally, give up. But if there's anything I've learned it's this: it's all in your mind. People can criticize you all they want, but you've got to understand that you are the only one who can truly determine your confidence and drive to push forward. It's really fucking difficult and quite cliche, but simply put, you've just gotta believe in yourself. People will criticize you and try to put you down; screw them, just keep pushing forward. If you like what you do, keep doing it. Otherwise, you'll just be miserable. I'm not the best at playing (I mostly play guitar) and I'm most certainly not an excellent songwriter. But by god I love it, and I'll continue doing it because it pleases me. Songwriting, I feel, gives me purpose and a way to express myself. Don't compare yourself to other people and lament over how you're inferior to them, because at the end of the day, that's only convincing yourself that you suck and that you should give up. How good they are has no bearing on how good you will be. I'm absolutely sure you're better than you think you are. Just keep pushing forward.
+Chris James Exactly. If everyone could be great nobody would be. Best you can do is do things you enjoy doing and if you get lucky (like lottery odds luck) you might end up in a situation like dave lol.
That's not how it works... You don't jut try something and expect to be good at it... few people are naturally beter at others, and if they are, in ten years of practice it won't make any difference. The only reason you aren't good at it is because you haven't put enough effort into it
He's saying be authentic. Come from a place that is within, work hard, and of course Fresh Pots! He is 1 of the greatest speakers. You can tell he lives in his music, and I respect that. It shines through when he preforms.
Love Dave Grohl. Nirvana was the band for Gen X and I am do grateful I was young when they came on the scene. When Kurt died it was a shock to the nation. Then a few years later I hear this new band I really liked, and I found out it was fronted by Dave Grohl and it was like a second chance for Nirvana fans to feel that passion and excitement all over again. Foo Fighters!!!
Dave's voice is rock and roll. It takes a great person to say "Who's gonna fight the Foo? Somebody's gotta do it, I'm here, and I wrote all this music,... I love this world and should rock them correctly!" Thank you Dave, we love you for it brother!
The 'Figure it out' is my favorite and most valuable advice...if you really want something bad enough, you will indeed figure it out. If you don't figure it out, then you simply didn't want it bad enough.
"you gotta be focused and passionate" If you check out the story of the beginnings of groups like Alice in Chains and Guns n Roses, it´s amazing how focused and hard working they were, they lived together and played +5hours a day, every single day. No exceptions. It´s not a coincidence, they were really really hard workers, plus very very talented.
I have to say some of the best musicians in the world are not known, the world knows nothing about them, they have not been discovered yet. So you can be the best musician in the world but if you are not discovered yet then you will go no where. Whose responsibility is it to get you discovered, well I guess that is yours. So being talented and being discovered are two different things
17 months ago (about one month after the publish date of this video) my musical partner died suddenly. It was devastating. I have not been able to write, play, or even sing in front of people because it is just too painful. I have mental illness and music has always been how I work stuff out. When you are dealing with heavy stuff and can't go to what helps you work it out because that's where the pain is, it's awful. My partner and I shared a love of the Foo Fighters and Dave is not just my Rock n Roll hero, he is someone I look up to as an example of how to be an awesome F*in human being. Thank you for this video. It reminds me why I admire him so much and listening him talk about how devastated he was after Kurt died gives me hope that I too will bounce back to do what I love.

Yeah, if you're really good you'll succeed. And especially if a genius happens to come a long to write some huge rock classics for you to play drums on. Luck has nothing to do with it Dave. Any good drummer, if you're driven, will end up playing in a legendary rock band.
Dave is clearly a great bloke, and I love his songwriting, but I think a lot of "making it" is just pure chance - being in the right place at the right time. For him, it was being a friend of a friend of Kurt Cobain's who happened to be looking for a new drummer. If he hadn't made it into Nirvana, I really don't think he'd have had the opportunity to develop the Foo Fighters so quickly with an existing fanbase, connections in the music industry, money to fund it, etc. etc.
I guess he is prepared to seize the opportunity and he still did his best. If he was not good, he might not been accepted to join Nirvana. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for watching. #BTA313 Shine
You have to be good AND lucky. There's a mountain of incredibly talented musicians that have never made it big, or even small. There are also quite a few not-so-great musicians who have become incredibly famous and rich. So, I agree that the best way to be successful in music is to actually be good, but sometimes it certainly pays to be lucky and/or very good at marketing.
@aidan mcnally: Yes, may be he is lucky to get these opportunities and be this famous but my friend, it doesn't really matter if you would be famous or not - you should just love, and be passionate of what you do. And that's precisely, we love Dave Grohl and feel motivated. I am sure there are people who are just as happy as Dave Grohl by loving what they do and are not famous. As he says - "Driver/ catalyst for playing music is that you should love playing music". :)
XBebopo was it luck that made Dave Grohl practice drumming "his way" in the 80's. No, it was a conscious decision. Was it luck that was responsible for Dave to go out and start writing a demo (on his own) while he was in Nirvana? No. He had songs he wanted to record. Was it luck that he recorded his demo in 5 days playing ALL the instrument by himself? See where I'm going with this, right?
There's tons of people who have done basically the same stuff and never made it big. If you think that the only thing that matters is hard work, then you're going to be disappointed by life.

He is also one of the few people that you don't get mad at his success, or jealous of it, because he is also another rare thing, a decent human being. superblonde the longer u live, the more u realize there is no such thing as luck. Don't waste time doubting the method and making excuses. I've found the harder I work, the luckier I get. There's always better musicians and usually there's a reason or reasons why they aren't successful and it typically doesn't have anything to do with talent or ability. It's usually attitude and likeability that holds people back.

@Otie Jason
I don't think it's not about feeling it... It's about letting it consume you.

It's just rare that a group stays together long enough and everyone puts in the work to be successful without some huge label and a big signing bonus.
my favorite one don't lose your personality.

I was riding in a friends car and the song "The Best Of You" came on the radio and it hit me on a very positive way. I later bought the CD and played that song several times every day for months.

Yep, agree +Victor MORLEY. I sucked at first but loved it so much I kept practicing (and by that I mean looking up tabs of songs I like on Ultimate Guitar and looked up "how to play ... And " just figure it out"
what do you do if you're not good at anything?
Get good at something?
The only reason you aren't good at it is because you haven't put enough effort into it
"Figure it out" Dave Grohl is the coolest cat in the world. He is genuine, honest, open and passionate about life and what it offers.

Awesome! Thank you for sharing. 💛😊 #Believe - Ahmed
Dave's voice is rock and roll. It takes a great person to say "Who's gonna fight the Foo? Somebody's gotta do it, I'm here, and I wrote all this music,... I love this world and should rock them correctly!" Thank you Dave, we love you for it brother!
Absolutely! Dave is a rock legend 🤘 #Believe - Feb (from Evan's team)

Couldn't agree more.
The 'Figure it out' is my favorite and most valuable advice...if you really want something bad enough, you will indeed figure it out. If you don't figure it out, then you simply didn't want it bad enough.

"you gotta be focused and passionate"
If you check out the story of the beginnings of groups like Alice in Chains and Guns n Roses, it´s amazing how focused and hard working they were, they lived together and played +5hours a day, every single day. No exceptions.
It´s not a coincidence, they were really really hard workers, plus very very talented.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for watching Sergio. :) #BTA304 Shine
What if you are not seeking fame and money and ass kissers.... just saying
@@aishaarellano7473 You're right. Some artists are not looking for fame but for the fun of the job, a job they really like.
It reminds me why I admire him so much and listening him talk about how devastated he was after Kurt died gives me hope that I too will bounce back to do what I love.
thanks!! pure inspiration, love them all

I can listening to Dave talk all day and night. He’s a genius.
Absolutely! Dave's insights are always a delight. 😊 #Believe - Feb (from Evan's team)
