Completely agree man!! I went in with high hopes and was shocked at how bad it was, and disappointed that nothing was resolved or explained further...

why is longlegs shown driving a car, but then later on in the film, when the police finally go to arrest him, he's standing at a bus stop with a bunch of luggage?

How about when she sees him in her house that night, but when she goes back in she checks the room and it seems empty, so she doesn't bother searching around anymore and just sits down again with her back to the door and focuses on solving the absurd letter. And then, did she ever tell a single soul about the letter?? I don't think she mentioned it to her boss or anyone..?

Holy shit I forgot about that! Yeah she just stops searching the house as soon as she sees the letter hahaha what a great addition to the FBI.

yes she could have easily mentioned that Longlegs was at her house last night but for some reason she doesn’t. Never explained. Just a vehicle for the letter even tho she didn’t need the letter to solve the code she was already working on the library of letters (one fucking time). Already knew the birthdays. It was such a hack script.

Did you even watch the movie? lmao "They forgot she was psychic" when this was said I understood that you did not understand the movie as this is explained very blatantly. Contrarian takes for the sake of it.

@@theplebe6342 She's not really a psychic. Pretty much everytime she discover a clue, she looks over her shoulder, as if something is giving her a hunch. This is actually the devil telling her where to look. Like the scene at the library, where she looks over her shoulder at the window, there's the devil's shadow outside, fading out. Then she picks the book about the 9 circle of hell and discover the upside down triangle thing. There's lots of little subliminal stuff like this during the whole movie. Personally, i loved it.

No, the reviewer is right. The notion that she's a psychic is never brought up again. The closest we get is that she solves all the letters in a couple of hours one evening by using a Bible. Of course, they don't show us how she uses the Bible to solve this code that has absolutely nothing to do with the Bible (and why didn't anyone else think of this over the past few decades they've been getting those letters?) So, I have to assume she used her psychic powers because the movie doesn't tell me. Oh and the letters were another failed plot point because once she solves them, she even tells us that they don't have any meaning except for one of them. It's just shitty writing. Things are put into the movie to create a cool scene but have nothing to do with the overall story.

I don’t think they explain it blatantly. I assumed she had some intuition because she was under the influence of the doll or something.

I wanted to love this movie. I even convinced myself I did after the first watch. It’s exactly the kind of horror film I love. Then I saw it a second time. It misses the mark on most things it tries to do. I see the bones of an iconic horror, but it’s stripped of its flesh. Really a missed opportunity.

Also the mom doing “ deal with the devil” when he literally couldn’t harm the daughter without the doll while she is in a DIFFERENT COUNTRY was so fucking weird 😭😭
Also if someone gonna say that the devil could harm her without the doll then why does they need to insert the dolls in each house ? Also why in ALL THE KILLINGS the police never found a doll in any crime scene ?
Also why does “ the devil” want the daughter AFTER SHE IS GROWN UP ?? Doesn’t he only target 8 year old girls on their birthday ? So weird lmao

I agree with all of your points. All of the people who are trying to sell this as an amazing movie are just reaching. Badly. They desperately want the movie to be good so they are making excuses of ways it can be good. The acting was good and the cinematography is good, but the script sucks.
I think people have been fed shitty movies for so long that when a mediocre movie comes along, they think they've seen a new masterpiece.

This movie hinges off the marketing sooo much. I don’t see this movie being recommended or even be cared about in the future. The supernatural aspect they cram in at the end is super shallow and cliche, every other line is a pretentious monologue, the screenplay felt thrown together, one of the messiest 3rd acts I have ever seen in a movie, it also felt like a 12 year olds interpretation of how the police and detectives work. The whole thing just rings hollow.

    OK. Long reply incoming.
Before addressing specific points, I will say that I do not think Longlegs is a bad movie, but it did fall (very) short of reaching its potential due to weak writing, as you have pointed out.
However, I think you have missed the mark in two ways.
    1. Why engage with discourse over the moving being "scary?" Being scared by a movie is for children. No one should be trying to "scare" an audience of adults through a movie screen. What makes a horror film is its ability to meaningfully upset, unsettle, unnerve, discomfort, or disturb an adult. "Scaring" is hack territory, filled with jump scares and CGI demonic face transformations. Any adult talking about "scary" horror movies either is talking to an audience of children or has lost all credibility as a person qualified to critically examine media/art.
    2. The main character is not "psychic." As explained very clearly in the movie, while the main character's doll was intact, the devil ("The Man Downstairs") had the power to strongly influence her cognition through a sort of psychic sense of what she should be thinking and doing at any given time, as if the devil is a puppeteer who uses special dolls as a medium to control his puppets.
I have to agree that overall I cannot call this a good movie, but there are a few things about it I really loved.
    1. The cinematography was phenomenal at choosing lighting and angles that created constant discomfort, weaving a thread of anxiety through the entire movie.
    2. The sound design was incredible at choosing periods of silence and moments of loud noise that contributed to the continuous sense of dread without becoming jump scares or overused cliche.
    3. There was a very deliberate choice to almost always show what is behind the main character, often a dark hallway or empty room, yet never abuse the technique by showing a creature or having a jump scare. It felt as though the main character was constantly being watched by something we never get to see, and it added another layer to the uneasiness in every scene.
Overall, I completely understand your feelings for the movie. The writing failed dramatically in several ways.
A much stronger ending to the film (in my opinion) would have been the discovery by police search that Longlegs himself had a doll, revealing that the devil made him kill himself because he was done with him. Longlegs, a worshipper of Satan, is instructed how to make his own doll, and the "thing" inside the metal ball in the dolls' heads is the person's soul for whom the doll is made. Because the devil is prohibited from harming or stealing a person's soul, he has Longlegs offer a doll to a family as a gift. When the gift is accepted, the girl's soul is traded in a demonic ritual, and if the doll is destroyed, so is the soul with it. In this way, the devil sacrifices souls to himself. The significance of the number 14 (the "birthday" number) is that there are to be 14 child sacrifices leading up to the events of The Book of Revelation, since it is pointed to as significant several times in the film. The main character destroys the final girl's doll, thinking she has set her free. With the sacrifice of the 14th girl's soul, Revelation is set into motion, and we end the film by showing the seven-headed beast rising from the ocean, also closing the loop on the main character's earlier quoting of that passage from The Bible.
