I want to clarify a few things after seeing some recurring themes in this (lively) comment section. I’m going to address people who disagree with my take (mostly).
    1. Some people are under the impression I had improper expectations for the movie. Well, that’s for you to decide, but I expected something like Zodiac, The Silence of the Lambs, Memories of Murder - crime-thrillers with horror elements. And my moviegoing experience was that Longlegs failed as an effective crime-thriller and as a horror movie.
    2. Some people seem to think I “don’t get” atmospheric horror and probably didn’t like Hereditary. Well, wrong - I very much like Hereditary - it was probably my favorite horror movie that year. And I generally like atmospheric horror - the classics like The Shining, Don’t Look Now, Alien, and Suspiria are all personal favorites. And I very much enjoyed newer flicks like It Follows, The Witch, and Midsommar. My broad-ish appreciation for both atmospheric horror and crime-thrillers is what made me surprised at my level of distaste for Longlegs.
    3. Some people say I shouldn’t pay attention to marketing or let it impact my expectations. Well, I say to you that that’s mostly impractical. I don’t treat a release like Longlegs the same as some direct-to-video release, and I suspect most don’t. Having expectations is fine and unavoidable.
    4. Lastly, yes, I recognize that the cinematography, set design, and sound design were strengths. However, I found everything else lacking - from a (very) underwhelming plot, to exposition dumping, to jump scares that didn’t add anything, to creepiness that mostly fell flat for me, to wooden and dry acting, to dialogue that was ChatGPT-like. And, no, Nic Cage's performance as Longlegs didn't work for me - at all. I found it comical and secondhand-embarrassment-inducing.
To those who liked the movie, I'm happy for you - I wanted to as well. To everyone - especially those who disagree - thanks for stopping by.

@@Darksoulsboy69 (1) "Quit expecting, go in neutral." Unless you bought a ticket to a random movie, you went in with expectations. This (tired) take that one shouldn't be anchored to what's promoted is genuinely baffling, isn't applied to anything else in life, and is fully impractical. I can respect someone saying they enjoyed the movie - fair enough - but saying folks shouldn't have expectations is brain rot.
      (2) "Appreciate it for what it is and what it does well." I stated that I think the cinematography was a strength. What I think you really mean is only say positive things and ignore what didn't work for me. Uh, no - when I think a movie, on balance, is subpar, I'm not going to sugarcoat it. Respect for filmmaking requires people to evaluate the whole picture, not find whatever bits are appealing and ignore what you didn't enjoy.
      (3) "Your loss. My favorite horror film since Hereditary." Cool. I very much enjoyed Hereditary - it's phenomenal. That's a movie with strong performances and a polished script to go along with the aesthetic, not a mere shell.
I'm actually glad you enjoyed the movie - I wanted to as well.

The thing is I can’t understand the ending. Lee let her boss do what he did when all she had to do was destroy the doll with the butt of her pistol. Its head was made of porcelain. That would have been a satisfactory ending with her still having to do what she did to her mother. That would have still left the psychological ending that him downstairs got the last laugh on Lee.
It would have tied the ending up and a happy sort of ending because her bosses family was saved.

My feelings are really mixed on it... I liked the atmosphere and the cinematography and lighting and overall vibe was great. The movie was visually interesting and appealing to me, and I felt like they did a good job building up initial tension with the atmosphere and acting at the very beginning. The story was initially interesting and "longlegs" was unsettling at first, so I was optimistic for the rest of the movie, but as it progressed the plot just fell completely flat, especially the 3rd act.
I feel like it would have been much more chilling and interesting without the devil-made-me-do-it thing going on. They could have even still made him a Satan worshipper if they wanted that to be an aspect of his character but I feel like having Satan being the one actually causing the murders was just a weird cheesy point in the story that should have been done much differently

It had so much promise out of the gate. The mood was there, the cinematography was something out of a Fincher flick, the material set us up for a great procedural horror/ thriller, but then... Nicholas Cage shows up to do his ultra-Cage thing. Even with all the prosthetics his quirky mannerisms were there and killed that moodiness. I thought it was beautifully shot, very atmospheric and almost dreamlike. I'm Canadian and I could tell almost right away that it was shot in Canada because the houses all reminded me of the houses that I grew up in in the 90s and I think that contributed a lot to the almost "dark fairytale" vibes it had for me. Oddly, it gave me a similar feeling to the one I used to get when I was a kid reading horror stories like the woman with the ribbon around her neck--I knew logically that it didn't make rational sense but it still gave me chills. My sister watched it and she said it was stupid lol, and I get that. This movie kind of needs you not to think too hard about it and just let yourself feel, it's almost surreal in that sense.

FBI agents are psychics (and implausibly coincidentally met the killer as a child), the character of Longlegs was creepy in some scenes and hilarious in others (someone has to actually direct Nicolas Cage to get the proper performance they want out of him!), and the devil literally made the fathers murder their families... so why does there even need to be a human killer? Yeah, I'm kind of torn on whether Cage was underused. To me, it felt like he was underused in terms of the story, but way overused in the scenes he was in. I didn't find his character to be very threatening or creepy after repeated exposure. He felt more like someone I'd see walking down the street or riding the subway, singing to themselves and/or screaming.

"Long Legs" felt like a scam. And based on how they're spinning it, some fake comments here and there might make it a successful one, at least before word of mouth and honest reviews starting pouring in. I'm sure they're hoping enough people will try to turn it into a "you just don't get it" type of situation. But it's such an obvious attempt to appeal to the A24 horror crowd (as the suits probably call it). I love Nic Cage, and I love a lot of the great horror movies that have come from that studio. And I was fully expecting this to be a match made in heaven (even though it's not A24, I expected a somewhat prestige horror from Neon) where Nic would knock it out of the park, especially after seeing Mandy and Color Out of Space for example. I saw a phoney review unironically saying this was 'elevated' horror. But instead I just wanted to fucking laugh when Nic was on screen, and as we all know, he can have that affect. I enjoyed a lot of his recent films, especially the ones that knew how to utilize him well. But this was no "Pig" or "Mandy" in any sense.
Maika did exceptionally well with what she was given. She really is a perfect lead for indie horror, but she is kind of wasted here. If anything carried the movie, it was her performance, particularly in the first act. With Blair, I don't know if it was on him or the director, but I'm not sure what we were supposed to get from this character at any point. Could have been played by anyone honestly. The marketing of this movie is a flimsy trick. Do they honestly think we're going to analyze the meaning behind the bare minimum nonsense they gave us. Like this is supposed to be reminiscent of Se7en or Silence of the Lambs. A good provocative challenging slow burn to think about. Do they really think they have us figured out to the point that A.I. level writing can go right over our fucking heads. As if spooky ambience and quick cuts would be enough to hide how unintentionally laughable it was to see Nic in that stupid make up (I kept waiting for his character to take it off). Are we all supposed to talk about his unbelievable transformation. How it was so convincing, or brilliantly absurdist and over the top(whatever catches on). Studio: "We gotta get those Midsommar-Hereditary-It Follows-Pearl I'M A STAR kids".
By the way the supernatural aspect was insultingly stupid, and a tonally inconsistent unearned cop out. It was as if they thought they could coast by on the cinematography and Maika's acting alone, but this shit doesn't even try to make sense to a point where I felt second hand embarrassment. Are we really meant to fill in the blanks to make a better or more purposeful film in our heads and do the work for them? Are we meant to say "what do you think this meant, what do you think that meant" as if we can't see through this uninspired garbage from a mile away?
And who the fuck came up with the Maika Monroe heart rate (when in the room with Nic Cage) marketing strategy?

    • @timeandthorns
      @timeandthorns  3 місяці тому +6

Yeah, it certainly felt like a rug pull - the onslaught of sycophantic praise to get everyone in before they hear a negative word. And that partially motivated me to even make this YT account and video - just to address that gap in coverage on this flick. I also completely agree that Cage is great in Mandy. I really wish this movie had went more in that direction for the Longlegs character. You may have already seen it, but if you want to see something somewhat similar in genre to Longlegs (but much better, in my opinion) that also has Cage, watch 8MM.

  • @HellsGreatestAngel

Here’s my absolutely too long review cuz I’m bored.
A strange, compelling film that’s close to a perfect film. The insane promotion and ARG surrounding the film before its release was absolutely brilliant and instantly hooked me on the concept of the film. After following every trailer and tweet, it was no surprise I had to see Longlegs as *soon* as it released.
The movie opens with an insanely creepy shot introducing Lee and Longlegs. This 1970s style intro I loved for the cinematography, with a song that is relevant and catchy. This theme proved to be prevalent throughout the entire film with incredible angles, lighting, set design, and shots. It’s the eerie glow of the singular light in Lee’s office, contrasting the harsh light on the interrogation room, or the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shadows in the forest that make the movie a fun watch to keep you on your toes. It’s definitely my favorite thing about the movie and should 100% win an award for this performance.
Now it’s time for the star of the show: Longlegs himself. Nicolas Cage single-handedly carried the scare-factor if this movie, and I think there are very few, if not any, people that could play the role as he did. His strange child-like behavior around young Lee or the dolls is disturbing in a way, but worse when coupled with the satanic and demonic imagery he speaks of. Or also to put it bluntly: the fact that he uses the supernatural to drive families to death. It’s the shaky, high voice that can scream louder than anything else that he uses to cryptically explain his decisions. It’s the powder white face and the wrinkles that show how long he has been killing. The entire character and persona is horrifying in its own right and was by far one of the best parts of the film.
Speaking of the makeup, it’s the scene that traumatized the theater. (Spoilers!) When LONGLEGS bashes his head against the interrogation desk, coming back up for air and exposing his bloody face, growing more mangled as he continues, leaving Lee bathed in his blood. I have to give a standing ovation for the makeup director and how they managed to create such a surreal experience in making the scene seem so real.
But the story is where the movie starts to fall apart. The idea of a murderer that has only murdered by supernatural proxy is innovative and unique, and the twist at the end that finally shows Lee’s connection to Cobble ties the story together with a bloody bow. The story, in theory is interesting and suspenseful add could add to the amazing elements in the film even more, but instead is just a bit confusing and has holes that weren’t considered by the team. The timeline is incoherent, and when the Longlegs killings happen is quite often not mentioned besides a vague year. The days may be significant to the purpose of the murders, but the dates are hard to follow and frankly confusing. While the dates and timelines are much more comprehensive and detailed online in material like the teasers and the birthday-murders-website, the average watcher shouldn’t have to look up extra online resources to properly understand the events of the film.
The twist of Longlegs’ accomplice being Lee Harker’s own mother, and how she became that role is interesting and adds depth to how each of the Longlegs killings work; However, it leaves us with more questions than answers. While Longlegs’ first interaction with Harker’s family is in 1974, the first of his killings took place in 1968. Before the introduction of Ruth and her initiation of each of the murders, how did he commit the first few? Leave the doll to the child without the parents knowing? Break into the home without the knowledge of anyone? This is just one example of a plot hole that the movie leaves us with.
The pacing of the film is also weird for lack of a better word. The entire movie is told without much explanation until the end, which was a little annoying, but made the monologue at the end all the more compelling, and I can see why they chose to take it that way.
In conclusion, Longlegs is a film that while isn’t perfect, is a memorable addition to the Psychological and Religious Horror genres that shouldn’t be forgotten and should definitely be looked to as a piece of media that should inspire production value of movies to come, and filming in a way that can affect the viewer in more emotions than fear.

It really is interesting how two people can view the exact same movie (presumably) and come to radically different impressions. I agree with you on three points: (1) the marketing was phenomenal; (2) the cinematography was topnotch, which is typical for Oz Perkins flicks; and (3) the story was flimsy, though I'd go further than that.
In terms of disagreement, I honestly just didn't find Cage's performance after the opening scene very compelling. I wanted to laugh at multiple parts. They felt like first takes to me that could've use better direction and control. The makeup didn't work for me either. Really, nothing about his character did. The interrogation scene made me roll my eyes and check out. I didn't find it real or convincing at all, either from Monroe's reaction or Cage's performance. I thought there was ample material for a quality movie, but the pieces just didn't fall together well for me at all - and I really wanted them to.
Also, your review isn't too long - it's a great thing for folks to analyze the media they consume and put some thought into it! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    • @HellsGreatestAngel
      @HellsGreatestAngel 3 місяці тому

@@timeandthorns I agree with many of your points! I personally found Cage’s character to be a compelling and scary addition to the film, but I could see how one could find the performance a bit comical in some ways. I think what mainly made me enjoy the performance was the voice, which I found legitimately scary. While the interrogation scene isn’t very realistic when compared to real police investigations, I was mainly referring to the makeup during the scene which I thought looked pretty damn convincing lol. And I definitely agree that the story was the most lacking part of the film. It’s almost a reverse of the common “good idea, bad execution.” That is: a mediocre idea with very good execution. While people saying that the movie “changed horror media forever” or believe that it’s a perfect film I don’t agree with, I also don’t agree with those saying it was complete trash. (Btw, you were the first person to point out the super random name Longlegs. Like for real, that name has nothing to do with the story besides being mysterious, like I’m sure there could’ve been a much more *on-topic* name that had the same effect!)

Thank you for saving me money. It would have been nice if you had fake wharewolf or vampire teeth during the review. And pretended you had only one arm.

I thought it was ok. It was creepy, fun, interesting but it def couldve had more.

What I liked was the acting was excellent from everyone. It was cool for a 90's throwback. It was creepy and eerie because of the camera shots. I didn't like the second half of the movie because they decided to add something and it took me out of the film. I was disappointed by Nicholas Cage performance.

I actually thought the lead actress performance was pretty good, it was the only thing that really kept me engaged throughout, but I have to agree with pretty much everything else it was a total let down in terms of expectation. People say don't go in with expectations...what the fuck does that even mean? Of course you're going to have an anticipation for a movie and guess what good ones don't disappoint you. Horror is subjective as to what scares people, but the movie shouldn't feel odd just for the sake of just being odd, there should have an intent and purpose and I didn't really see it with Longlegs.

I agree with u. Saw it over the weekend & it was not scary at all. The plot was non-existent, the acting was sub-par & oh, Nic Cage looked like a facelift gone wrong!

Enjoyed your opinion. I was quite underwhelmed by this movie. Screenplay felt like it was written by a precocious 8th grader who just took their first hit of pot. Cage was like a cross between Tiny Tim, Robert Smith from The Cure, and Mrs Doubtfire. Not scary or creepy, just plain goofy.

@@AbrasiousProductions Yeah, I'm a bit surprised Mike liked it. He did say the weakest element of the movie was the plot, which I pretty much agree with. But both were relatively positive on it. Bizarre.
