Prepping gives you peace of mind for any realistic disaster, just to make you anxious about the even bigger disaster, like tripple nuked earthquakes ending society.
Once you have a plan, some gear, some food and other supplies at home, a bag ready to go should you need to, it's important to make it a sustainable and healthy lifestyle. Buy some ikea storage shelves and keep all your canned food in a rotation instead of constant panic and stockpiling. That kind of sustainability.

You might of said this in one of your other videos, but no prep is ever worth going into major debt for. Preparedness is important, but if you have student loans, credit cards, or other loans you need to take care of that stuff first. Then worry about paying off your home or buying a house and set aside a percentage of your income to prepping splitting between all the categories. Its a process, you learn through trial and error that some things will work better for you than others. All the preps in the world will not mean shit if your severely overweight and unhealthy. In the words of Garand Thumb, "Get fit or Die".

“Being useful” it’s a good idea to have something that can’t be stolen/robbed from you. Knowledge is power. Not to add more paranoia to a group that probably has enough paranoids within it. But we all know the joke, you don’t have to be faster than a bear, you just have to be faster than your buddy. And then even further where they hurt their buddies leg. Well, just saying, your buddy is in the best position to stab you in the back and take everything you’ve stocked up; but that’s not advantageous for him if you also have skills that he can’t just take. Kinda shtty to think about, but with this gun tube push for people to network and get groups, it seems important to consider.

Honestly, I think you nail it at the end. Half the problem is people selling bullshit and then the endless arguments about it. It got to the point for me about a year ago that I don't even shoot some places anymore because I can't take the level of nonsense attached to that place. I'm not going to drop a bunch of coin on ammo to go listen to people complain or rant or scream that people aren't doing THE [NINJA] THING. I can do that, basically for free, with talk radio and just turn it off when I'm annoyed.
I honestly just stopped taking a lot of the people in the "prepping" community seriously about 10 years back when I watched an obese dude in his mid 50's, in person, try to tell a freshly separated JTAC guy how radios work "in real life".
If you're all about T. Rex Arms and [Prepper Channel] as being gospel, you're going to end up deep in debt with a bunch of dumb shit you don't really know how to use. But hey, at least you can tell Lucas that you do carry "distracts" to bang the dudes you saw on your [totally secure and not at all a spy device you paid for to lose your security and autonomy] Ring doorbell that the prepper guy told you to get because it's so simple.

I did so much prepping in the last 6-7 years that not only did I partially burn out on it, I hit what I can only describe as an "end point" where the only thing I can really do is stack things. More food, more ammo, more water, more gold, more meds... and my little house cannot hold it all and still function as a place to live when shit HASN'T hit the fan. I have decided that we're "good enough" on anything. Every now and then I may top some things off, get another crate of ammo, get some more #10 cans of freeze dried beef, whatever. We're good for several years on all fronts, and if shit ever gets so bad that we actually have to live off of our preps for more than a few weeks and/or use the defense tools, I'm comfortable rolling the dice that I've done enough to outlast the vast, vast majority of people, and do what I've always intended to do with my preps -- help people.

@@boejiden1942 Yes to nods, and yes to training. Not nearly as much as the preparedness community online would like you to believe they do, but what I have decided to be "enough". To be frank, I made the call years ago that I am not willing to devote a huge amount of my time and resources to continual professional training in order to gain a small tactical edge when I'm already well ahead of the vast majority of people in that regard. Would I get smoked by a retired special forces guy, or the random fudd with a 30-06? Possibly! Am I going to lose sleep over that? Nope.
The way I see it there is a point where "good enough" is truly good enough, and I am not willing to severely degrade my present for the potential promise of a tiny edge in a future that may or may not even happen.

I'm kinda sick of the try hards obviously. 99.9% of civs will never use their pistol in a defensive situation let alone their rifles. SHTF is never going to happen THANK GOD. Everyone prepped for that kinda thing but no one(or very few people) prepped for a pandemic which was obviously far more likely. This entire "prepping" industry quite frankly relies on fear mongering. In fact, i've noticed that most of the conservative political movement relies on fear mongering now as do most GOP politicians now. BTW, I say this as a conservative.
I think its fun to train but its really not that important compared to practicing something like a trade skill. How many of us can weld? How many of us know how to replace a door on their house without a youtube video? Can you change your brakes on their vehicle? Do you know how to wire a new outlet in your home? Can you plant and properly maintain a decent sized garden?
Instead of training for a civil war or something we should probably just talk to each other and figure out why the country is so hyper partisan now. it's because both parties are fear mongering like crazy and social media puts people into echo chambers which then drive the groups in the echo chambers to fear and hate their fellow countrymen for some bullshit political reasons. People should spend less time online and more time out in the world living.

Man, this was right on the money. Getting out of the military coming into covid I got into this stuff hard core. Combat vet getting out after the better part of a decade and coming home to all the bs of 2020-2021 I guess I got a little obsessive with this stuff. And yeah, I bought a bunch of shit, sold some stuff and sorta settled on what I wanted/felt I needed...But then I started chasing after marginally better gear, getting into the weeds on optics, parts, plate, carriers, chest rigs, and all the little differences, and uses for each one. About 4 months ago I snapped out of it. Two realizations. One: none of the gear I had bought, replaced or upgraded had ever been used to the point of breakage or being truly worn out...So why the hell was I buying more stuff when I already have something bombproof that is still perfectly functional. Number two: if shtf truly and totally...would I be in my city apartment with a car ready to haul my years of tactical purchases, parts, guns etc to my family's place out in the country in classic bug out fashion...Or would I be caught up somewhere because work and school takes me away from home. Would I be able to even get to all that gear and kit I was stashing like it was the key to my very survival that would always be there for me? After those two realizations, I took to ebay to downsize my collection. Kept it to good quality, scalable, general purpose stuff, a few pew pews, and some spare parts. I'm not writing this off as hobby at all or losing interest, I just had to snap out of that feeling that not having the latest and greatest meant I was not doing something right. Easy to get sucked into the tactical minutia mindset. Now, I've been getting more into rucking again, camping, working out, etc. Not obsessing over this stuff has been sooo much healthier for me. Still have it, still gonna shoot and train, just broadening my horizons and saving money in the process. I could go on but I already wrote a damn novel.

My unexpected SHTF skill set? I got a new job. Part of that new job was learning confined space entry, with all the requisite air quality testing, rope work, setting up tag lines and pulleys, etc. Now 2-3 times a week I’m running guys on lines into ovens, pits, tanks, etc. and I can whip together an ingress/egress rope setup pretty quickly. I could set up a bucket line for a well, or move equipment up and down an elevation, and other cool tricks. I learned it for free at work. No, better yet, I got paid to learn it. I am also going to take the free stop the bleed course (that I set them up for), and the next level of confined space entry, the confined space rescue course.
Prep skills are everywhere. Our day to day lives surround us with people with skills we can learn, often for free, that will benefit us in a bad situation. Cops and soldiers aren’t the only people with SHTF skills, and often the skills they have - martial disciplines like gun fighting and taking down aggressors - aren’t applicable or are downright detrimental to a situation.
Learn to cook. Learn to can. Learn to garden. Learn to use rope. Learn how a generator works. Learn how to fix your car. These are skills that will benefit you in the end of times but will also benefit you this week.
Then hit the range with your buds and put some more rounds through your beater rifle and EDC pistol.

For me, the key to not burning out was finding ways to make it enjoyable.
Instead of buying a new gun, I'd buy a couple cases of ammo, and take a class. That way i had fun improving my skills, and learning new things to practice.
Instead of buying shelves of canned food and having the tedious task of going through it, organizing it, and rotating it out. I bought livestock, and learned how to farm, i personally think its fun, animals are entertaining.
I always try to find a way to make the tedious tasks of prepping, fun and engaging, as opposed to tedious acts of consumerism..
No matter how much stuff you buy, you'll eventually run out. So setting up a system that is more sustainable long term made more sense, it also keeps me active and keeps my mind off of all the bullshit, because im more concerned with taking care of my animals, and actually training than i am with what new gear there is for me to buy.

Why’s why I’ve been practicing growing my own food from seeds I saved from last years harvest. I harvested about 35 lbs of potatoes a few weeks ago which I planted from last years potato harvest. Also getting tons of peppers, letting my beans dry on the stall, squash, corn and my tomatoes for slicing and turning into sauce are just about ripe!
I’d love to get some goats and chickens but that’s learning for the future.

The best thing I've done in a preparedness sense is blending SHTF/WROL training into activities that don't include going to the range every week. Girlfriend and I need a break? We can go on a vacation with some backpacking. It's dual purpose as you can practice; shelter making, water/food preparation, starting and maintaining a fire, physical fitness with hikes, how and what to pack for sustainment, test clothing/equipment, you can use physical maps and navigation tools to get to your destinations. You can do a ton of things that are more likely to keep you alive compared to getting the newest nylon kit and it's not redundant and boring or an area where you can get complacent. Prepping can't be your entire life nor should it hold you from living your life peacefully, but you can blend it into your day to day and after a time start to not realize it.

I'm in my mid-40's, a bit older than most of you are, and I've been into survivalism/SHTF/etc since I was a teenager, and I watched my city catch on fire after some cops got acquitted for beating some dude who was high on crack. I've been through all the vacillations, survivalism, prepping, bushcrafting, and I've burned out on all of them variously. The balance I found, is that having guns, shooting competitions, offroading, camping as hobbies, and then living a sustainable lifestyle, where you learn to grow much of what you eat, develop relationships with farmers, butchers, and ranchers in your wider geographic area, and use guns, offroading, animals and other things as a means of forming and keeping a community is the best balance.
Great vid, I really tend to enjoy the philosophy vids over gear, unless it's philosophy of gear, which tends to be more useful than a very specific review of a thing I will never buy.

I'm guilty of this too, but like you were alluding to, we want to focus WAY too much on our rifle, our attachments, our ammunition. If it truly is going to be a SHTF, WROL, blah blah blah, one of the BIGGEST things is going to be health/physical and mental shape, speaking/leadership/people skills, and general SKILLS that small communities and units will absolutely NEED to survive. MOST everyday people are going to be unprepared and looking for people to link up with to survive. EVERY community will need a caregiver/doctor, builders, planners, mechanics, hunters, gatherers, skilled laborers, and overall strong-willed people! We can't let our weapons and food supplies become our identity. I'm good with tools and can weld/repair/build things, know basic car/motorcycle maintenance, and have a myriad of other skills I could bring to a community and being a distance runner I could be molded to become a half decent scout/messenger, etc. Someday soon, I'm hoping to be able to afford a home with some land and I'll learn to grow a vegetable garden....and have my own range haha....and to add....I did sell my LPVO...not because I hopped on the "Guntubers are ditching the LPVO now so I will too!", but because I found the 3x prism is simple, robust, lighter-weight, and the perfect "all-around" optic for my 16" rifle. Regarding doing things with your gear to keep you interested: I find that most of the tactical bros I hang out with/meet at ranges have a vague intention of getting into hunting, but never actually take the plunge and do it. I think everyone who cares about SHTF preparedness should have experience hunting, shooting, cleaning, and butchering their own large game animals. If you have any rifle caliber firearm and a ruck with sustainment gear, you basically already have everything you need, and you'll learn a lot about your kit (and fitness levels) by getting out, backcountry camping, and tracking down some deer on BLM land.

Priority is always skill development and increasing capability rather than purchasing our way out of the problem. Homesteading and home manufacture/repair should be a major skill development area but are ignored on social media, especially by those presenting "high-quality imagery." I also discussed that people should be able to utilize those of poor health in their survival efforts because no doing so excludes the vast majority of available people. Lastly I see no large channels covering expedient or improvised construction methods like those I cover in depth due to lack of revenue produced by that subject area.

Speaking for myself here between 2020 and 2023 I was heavily invested in tactical/preparedness/ training etc. After feeling adequately proficient enough with my CCW and go to rifle and relatively content with the current state of my setup, I decided to take a pause. I moved to the country and started homesteading. I’m very well set in the firearms, support, logistics department but I still want more. I’m focusing more on self sustainability in the food and energy department these days but yeah it’s better to figure out your priorities and slowly chip away at procurement over time so that you don’t run out of money and motivation. If you can build community and to continually train is also a very important skill. We get burned out because we keep moving the goal posts and never let the dopamine hit come from actually succeeding.
solution. In my experience, the best things to do are to take a step back and start recording data on... well anything. Preps: lbs of various foods, round counts, days of clean water... working out: record your lifts, weights, reps, run times... I think you get the picture. either way, what this does is it puts into perspective how far youve come, or gives you a starting point to measure progress later. Sometimes its hard to see the forest through the trees. Love you guys. and just get out there and do it.

SHTF also means your home may be compromise because you alone cannot protect it entirely depending on how large it is be it a hour or an apartment. You need a small army with round the clock rotation of security, which means food, water to feed them and weapons to arm them.
It is always best to prepare for the possibility of abandoning your home and have a go back with essentials to take with you so you can move quickly and live somewhere else, so you cannot carry all your guns and ammo with you. You need a basic loadout that will not slow you down on top of survival gear

I find myself bouncing between gun/gear/fieldcraft to “I can stack a bit more food and firewood for this winter” and what tools and skills would be nice to have if the lights don’t ever come back on.
