- ►Thermostats are a simple device that regulates coolant flow through the engine. When cold, it will stay closed, stopping coolant flow to help the engine come up to temperature faster. Once up to temperature, it will open and allow coolant to flow normally and maintain proper engine temperature. Always install with the 'jiggle pin' bleed valve at 12 o'clock when possible.
For many applications, multiple temperature ratings are available. These ratings denote when the thermostat opens, and in extreme climates, different temperature ratings can be used to assist the vehicle in maintaining proper temperatures. In very hot desert climates, for instance, a lower temperature rated thermostat may be preferred.
There are two types of thermostat failures:
Thermostat stuck open (most common): Coolant will flow through the engine constantly from cold, preventing the engine from reaching operating temperature. Usually, this means a rich mixture resulting in poor fuel mileage and potential catalytic converter damage.
Thermostat stuck closed: If the thermostat is stuck closed, it will restrict flow into the engine resulting in an overheating condition, resulting in potential catastrophic engine damage.

You’re a scholar and a gentleman. Had a shop butcher my ML63 doing an upper radiator hose ( service street, Marietta GA ) damaged my thermostat and didn’t clip back any hoses. All rubbed on radiator fan and blew open. Left my wife and baby stranded on side of road. Thanks to your video I fixed every hose and thermostat in under 2 hours. God bless you brother man
I own a 2008 E63. Previous car was 2000 C230K. Please produce more M156 videos, yall do a Fantastic job. Thank you!!!
UPDATE 11/22......just ordered new thermostat.....i had cracked the breather line connection @ the thermostat while replacing my power steering reservoir. Made repairs to connection point with JB WELD and that lasted about a year......was driving the other day and smelled antifreeze....popped the hood and found coolant and JB WELD failure. Easy job replacing the thermostat. thank you FCP EURO!!!!
I have this exact same car with the same split in the front under cowling with an equal number of scrape marks.
I learned a lot from this video. I want to replace my power steering reservoir and this video shows how to do it too!
Super frustrating part of E63 ownership is that front scraping in 90% of parking spots ^.^ Glad this helped with your power steering res DIY!
@@fcpeuro please reply. And if so can you unplug it at the hose instead of radiator?
That is by far, the best, slickest, presentation I have seen. You are an amazing mechanic, and you can work on my AMG anytime you like. Good job ! Cheers Phill.
So thankful for these people🙏
Nice job 👍. Next time do a repair in a tuxedo!! How do you stay grime free???
Kyle's cleanliness and attire choice is the 8th wonder of the world... it doesn't make sense to any of us!
LOL I was think the same thing I get dirty just opening my hood!
This was very straightforward with beginners in mind. Thanks for the video! I started DIY on my C63 Especially in basic preventative maintenance and this sure saves more money and you know that the job is done right. 🤑
All about saving that money AMGRyRy! Its amazing with some time and patience the amount you can get done on your car in your driveway with some basic hand tools.
@@fcpeuro I agree! Dealer service charges are way overpriced imo. The costs will stack up if you intend to keep the car like i am. I highly suggest that DIY is the way to go if owning any car 😂
Please keep going. Thanks
You’ve just proven that Mercedes Benz can be fixed with a white shirt and soft hands. You’ve make it easy
Excellent informative presentation tutorial Kyle well done love your work, I like your comparison " not very temperamental like BMW and Audi" so true! gone are the days of 15min thermostat changes. One question? on the face of any of the "O" ring mating surfaces would you consider it any advantage to use a light coating of either a silicon grease or some type of RTV especially if the mating face is has pre-existing corrosion pitting?
Cheers from the land down under.
Glad you like the video, Glenn! On the o-rings, typically its best to lubricate them before installation to avoid pinching or crushing them, rtv might compromise the rubber.
@@fcpeuro remember when you said the ends are brittle for the coolant recovery tank vent hose? The end has broken off inside the thermostat breather. How can it be fixed?
This is great! Helpful for clearing space in front of the driver side timing cover too. Do you intend to make a video for your Valve Cover Gasket kit?
Glad it was helpful! We can definitely add valve cover gaskets to the list of DIYs!
@@fcpeuro also the timing cover gaskets which are part of the kit you sell. Those were the hardest part of the job for me. And, they leaked the most.
Old gasket residual is pretty tight and difficult to remove.
Great video, I was hoping you would take your watch off, might want to think about it next time
Keith, appreciate your concern for Kyle's watch! We'll let him know next time, but he's very timely.
Put some drift stitches on that cracked bumper for style points.
Kyle needs to put an emblem back on his cosmetic cover before any style points can be handed out... disgrace.
THIS IS AWSOME THIS GOT ME MOTIVATED UNTIL.......... I SAW THE THERMOSTAT FOR A 2011 S63 AMG........ TOTALY DIFFERENT. WHERE IS YOUR SHOP LOCATED?
do you run the car with the lid open on the expansion tank? to bleed the system cause my coolant was bubbling and spilling over?
Does the coolant have to be mixed with water or it can be used as is? Thanks for the video!
Depends on the coolant. If it isn’t diluted then you put water in it to dilute it, if it’s diluted already water is not necessary
The moment my 2010 c63 starts up even if I haven't driving it for days the engine fan will turn on and turn off when I turn off the car so I'm thinking my thermostat is stuck open also in my gauge cluster my engine runs at little highter temp always would that be thermostat issue
Is the ml63 the same way. I seen some videos where you have to remove the pulley to get access to the bottom bolt. Lmk
Please can you help me on my w204 c class my radiator fan keeps coming on at full pelt 10seconds of starting the car I goes off once I've taken the key out ive renewed the Coolant Temp sensor but Its still doing it
Hi,
Clear plastic drain hose size please ?
I have a question regarding E63 Amg wagon turbo Reservoir for 2014, its the second tank suppose to br full all the time?
Hi. M156 E63. What part of the engine is the oil temperature sensor in? Can you help with this?
My next project in the ML63. Subscribed ;-)
Thanks for the sub Kennan ! Let us know how it goes
Is it necessary to drain the Coolant? I know it would be best practice to do so however I remember performing this on so many W203 (non- AMG) Models when short on time. I would just put some rags underneath to catch the little coolant dropping on belt or pulleys and top up as necessary.
i know Im kinda off topic but do anyone know of a good site to stream newly released series online ?
@Kabir Jayceon try FlixZone. Just search on google for it :)
@Alan Raphael yup, have been using FlixZone for years myself :D
@Alan Raphael Thank you, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I really appreciate it!
@Kabir Jayceon Happy to help :)
At the end you mentioned your temp was sitting at around 85; what did it get to after driving for a while; and what’s normal? My E63 normally hovers around 100 (even after fluid flush) being here in the PNW. Thank you
Hi Damon, around 100 is within the normal range!
Just had mine replaced, I was hitting 120 when pushing my e63. Ended up buying the Mishimoto thermostat!
@@davehaye3374 120 is completely normal for the m156 after being driven hard.
My 2014 Mercedes c250 will not get up to operating temperature with the heat on. When the heat is turned on the engine temperature drops. Otherwise the car runs fine. Replaced Thermostat with 3 different ones. Heat valve twice. And now water pump. It’s been to 3 Mechanics including Mercedes. All Mercedes Parts. Input from you would be nice.
I think i need to replace my thermostat? If i turn off the heater, the car will over heat. Or is that something else? I just replaced my coolant resevoir tank.
Hi, there is a chance you may have introduced air into your coolant system after replacing the tank. We would advise on trying to bleed out the system first. From there you can look into thermostat/waterpump replacement if the system persists.
2007 e63 amg coolant level indicator is on. any advice would be helpful thanks
Bad sign. Possible head bolt issue.
@@ronbourassa353 thanks but I figured it out 2 months ago
cant you change it without relocating the power steering fluid
It's something you can certainly try, but Kyle prefers to make room to replace the thermostat when he's working, it definitely makes it easier
@@fcpeuro thanks! I just wish the camera showed the exact plugs and lines how to disconnect. I’m going to change my thermostat this week. @c63_420
Hey man my fan is keeps working is can be for thermostat?
It is possible, however your best bet would be to scan the vehicle and see if there is a code for either the thermostat or fan.
How many Mail
I can Change
21:40 - Hahaha, "Not very temperamental like a BMW or an Audi".
Can your shop ADOPT ME, please ... I wanna work for you and live in that shop .... and work on mercs all the time ... PLEASE !!!!
We do have a Murphy bed setup in the dorm in the shop 😂
@@fcpeuro I do not mind I'll work for food and bed only, just need the money to buy a ticket to US... which i do not have and do not have.....
Can you please assist me with these CODES
My MB II Scanner has arrived, Here are the active codes for my W204 2008 C300 RWD

It could be a thermostat issue, temp sensor issue, etc.
