Having had the "experience" of hydro lock created by the exact references in your video I am thankful to know the breaking serial number point to be aware of. I would have otherwise passed on a great opportunity to buy an SL63 had I not been aware of the upgrades! Thank you.
Great vid as always. The M156 is the last of the BIG NA V8's. We'll probably never see another mass produced. When I was buying my CLS I bounced between the 55 and the 63. In all my reading and test drives it became clear the M113K was the better engine long term and with long tubes the sound perfection. Much respect to the M156 however.......legend for sure.
I have a 2009 C63 bought 7 years ago with 29 thousand kilometres. Now on 167 thousand kilometres and the engine has never been touched other than servicing so even if it was to fail tomorrow, I've had a ton of fun with it. And I love it so much I will keep it till it does fail. Such a fun car to drive.
Excellent video and narrator. The one thing all owners of AMG 156 6.3 engines should do is change the oil and filter every 5000 klm with fluid titanium oil for extra wear protection for the tappets and cams.
I'm about to roll over 130,000 miles on my unmodified 2011 C63 AMG. I was fortunate in missing the bad head bolts by like 500 engines and the car has been quite reliable overall. As luck would have it, I just had to replace the A/C compressor for $1400, which is the most I've spent on a repair for it. Wear items due now and being addressed are front struts and the plastic trim on a couple of the climate control vents--broken plastic trim...that's C class for ya lol. I had horrible luck with aftermarket air filters (would throw codes constantly), so I went back to stock type filters and the problem went away. I love this car, it is truly a Jekyll/Hyde car. It can cruise easily all day long, comfortably under 2000 RPM on the highway, but turn into a raging AMG V8 beast in an instant. I stay on top of the fluid changes and when she's driven, visit the fuel pump often ;)
You really must buy special oils or oil additives for flat tappet engines. Modern oils basically provide very little lubrication because modern engines usually have been designed usually for very low friction.
Also, one more potential issue with these: Failing fuel injectors. My 2015 C63 507 had an injector stick open at 19k miles... All 8 were replaced with new spark plugs under warranty
Great video. I knew about the head bolt issues, but not about the others. I’ve been shopping for an SL 63 or 65. Hope you will do videos on them sometime. Subscribed and liked.
IM VERY SURPRISED THE M156 CARS ARE NOT HOLDING THEIR VALUE. ITS THE ONLY FULLY DEVELOPED ENGINE BY AMG. IT SOUNDS THE BEST OUT OF 97% OF AMGS. NATURALLY ASPIRATED. PEOPLE ARE SLEEPING ON THESE CARS.
As a Mercedes mechanic, I like the m156 and m159. But my heart still belongs to the good old 2,3-16v (M102.983)Engine from 190 /W201 ..... Just rebuild it after 250000km and have fun without fearing of expensive damages... And it gives you a racecar feeling too..... I don't like turbo engines, as like m156, I like the roaring sound of those NA-engines. The C63 is the nowadays 190e 2,3-16v. But it's too modern for me, I like it oldschool! 😊👍
The M156 is an awesome engine despite it’s problems. Had an 2009 C63 with the P30 (it didn’t have any engine upgrade in those years) then a 2010 E63. The sound they make is incredible! In 2012 I moved up to another E63 with the M157 biturbo and P30. It was noticeably faster and still sounded very good but not like the M156. I believe he says in the video that starting in 2012 the M156 engines have the black plastic valve covers but it starts with cars made in the early part of 2011. I’m not certain of the exact date but from what I can tell it’s production dates as early as January 2011 for model year 2011 in the US.
My father owns an '07 CLS 63! It is the stuff of dreams. Wicked fast and an exhaust note from the most intense rock-and-roll. Only issues I have are the abysmal ride quality and the sharp on/off brakes.
Also if it does fail after a botched mod, rare defect, or from failing to do your part by changing the oil, they are as easy to rebuild as a 350 SBC but with more steps since it has 4 cams instead of 1.
Great memories , I used to own in order of car & yr from new:- 2011 c63 PPP WEISTEC’d, 2014 c63 507 wagon WEISTEC’d ,2016 E63 AMG(s)WEISTEC’d , 2017,C63s coupe 600bhp mapped, in 2019 I finally gave up on AMG’s after finding the after sales customer care literally non existent and how the cars are built so moved onto Audi’s -- happily drive an R8 plus coupe 🤨
I see no reason to hate the engine, exepct the reliability, but for sure one of the greatest engine made, that 6.2 n/a madness is the most thrilling engine I have felt
Can you make one on the M157 please!!! I want to know more about my engine, LOL. And I really appreciate your channel a lot as well and might be getting a w211 or w210 E55 depending on the deal I could find. I currently own a w218 CLS63 and want to make that a garage queen.
Kyle Li watch the video from Tasos. It is a good engine. Its weak point is the coating they used in cylinders. I suppose m157 won’t be very reliable in the long run either.
Yeah, the M156/159 has its troubles. But I can't think of any other high-displacement V8 that's as responsive or free-revving as this is. And with a soundtrack like this engine has, IMO, it's one of the best N/A V8 engines ever produced.
The M156 was also used in the ML63, S63 and R63 too. I'm not too sure if it was ever used in the GLS 63 ? or whether that was just a M157 5.5 twin turbo ?, Also there is the M159 which was derived from the M156 and used in the Mercedes SLS sports car too.
Watch Tasos' videos. The aluminum silicone cylinder coating is a very serious concern. 4.7 liters engines in w212 E550 have the same potential problem. Other than that it's a good engine. But unlike lifters in m156, the cylinder coating can't be fixed.
@@zali9657 well you said m157 or 2014 e63. That's the engine I am talking about too. It's based on m278. Those engines may have serious problems caused by cylinder coating .

@@ati1903 can i wait till every 5k miles instead? Just got the 09 C63 AMG. New owner here with not a whole lot of spare money l.ao
Jordan Fleming no i would change every 3000 miles
@@ati1903 let's say I use the correct oil and everything, could I do it myself with no problems? Or is there something extra that MB does that id be missing out on
Who here has an amg engine in their car 🙋🏻♂️
Me, I have a 2005 CL55, and it makes smile every time I drive it. :)
R H G55💪
2005 CLK55 AMG ,,M113 ,,naturally aspirated ..the most reliable and easiest to service AMG engine ever built...
2013 Lunar Blue C63 AMG P31 pack. 460whp

Your videos are so awesome and informative. Love the vaporwave music.
Having had the "experience" of hydro lock created by the exact references in your video I am thankful to know the breaking serial number point to be aware of. I would have otherwise passed on a great opportunity to buy an SL63 had I not been aware of the upgrades! Thank you.
Oh cool Torsten Oelschlager built my engine too @ 12:08. I visited the factory some years ago and I think he moved on to engineering.
Finally an unbiased assessment of the dreded M156!
Own a 2010 E63. Last of the 6.2. love it....
The lexus v8 is the last n.a. v8 performance
I'm looking at a CLS55 but the SBC Brakes are the main issue for me
Excellent video thank you, My wife and I are loving our 2012 C63.
Excellent Video... Thanks.Larry Hernandez
M156 still alive? looking to get one 100k+ miles
@Nicholas N. Yes sir, they are reliable cars. Just make sure the maintenance has been done. Npre purchase inspection is never a bad idea though.
@@travr1131 ok thank you, hope it serves you well
Woow man incredible quality both information and video. Keep up the good work!
You really must buy special oils or oil additives for flat tappet engines. Modern oils basically provide very little lubrication because modern engines usually have been designed usually for very low friction.
I run 10w-60 Liqui Moly and Lubegard engine oil treatment in my M156
A work of art
Also, one more potential issue with these: Failing fuel injectors. My 2015 C63 507 had an injector stick open at 19k miles... All 8 were replaced with new spark plugs under warranty
Great video. I knew about the head bolt issues, but not about the others. I’ve been shopping for an SL 63 or 65. Hope you will do videos on them sometime. Subscribed and liked.
Looking for a Cl63 currently, I love this channel
I've been enjoying your videos. Good job bro
I w watched this video 20x or more now , great work looking forward to more videos you post .
5:53 some Australian drag racing, nice 👌🏼 I am biased though 😉
IM VERY SURPRISED THE M156 CARS ARE NOT HOLDING THEIR VALUE. ITS THE ONLY FULLY DEVELOPED ENGINE BY AMG. IT SOUNDS THE BEST OUT OF 97% OF AMGS. NATURALLY ASPIRATED. PEOPLE ARE SLEEPING ON THESE CARS.
Any idea how many miles these can go? Everything is 100k miles used market
Thank you for being so informative and thorough!
Great quality and very informative. Earned a follower!
I own the e 63 2008 and I have to say that I love this engine
if you seek problem you'll find problem in every car. so don't cry, drive your amg with proud
So much AWESOME information! Thanks for what you do AMG Meister !
Wouw🙌🏻 what an great explained episode about my favorite engine all times.
Gotta love that throaty 6.3... looking forward to buying my first CLK 63 Black Series in the next few years.
I'm working on a CLK63 Black series tomorrow. It's for sale.
Steve Fitzpatrick dope! Need a couple more years haha

this part just feels so good to look at, its so SMoo000th
Excellent content and very informative as always. Keep it up man!
2013 w204 c63 with the m156 is my dream car man. I have a 2012 c350 with a few mods but man I would love me a coupe amg w204 c63.
My father owns an '07 CLS 63! It is the stuff of dreams. Wicked fast and an exhaust note from the most intense rock-and-roll. Only issues I have are the abysmal ride quality and the sharp on/off brakes.
Another informative and entertaining video. Thank you sir.
I’m not sure if this would fit your Channel but I would love to see a 4.2 audi v8 video. Love your vids
2 seconds into this video I allready hit like button :)
Thank you, I have a 2008 E63 and you pointed out all the problems.
Also if it does fail after a botched mod, rare defect, or from failing to do your part by changing the oil, they are as easy to rebuild as a 350 SBC but with more steps since it has 4 cams instead of 1.
The Germans' equivalent to the Chevy LS engine. Made me proud my favorite Mercedes sedan (the CLS63 AMG '08) has it under the hood.
Ardhana Hariwidagdo aye I have that car
Yes sir! Mine is also a 2008, and it's a beast. I absolutely love it!👍
SuperB63AMG how many miles/kilometers does your car have on it

maybe a video on how to upgrade an m156 for better reliability
Blitz Ace that’s going to be too expensive.
16 Pilot AEM Magnaflow 9AT I take it you don’t like Mercedes
CL63 is my favorite AMG with that engine apart from the SLS with it's M159.
same
Great memories , I used to own in order of car & yr from new:- 2011 c63 PPP WEISTEC’d, 2014 c63 507 wagon WEISTEC’d ,2016 E63 AMG(s)WEISTEC’d , 2017,C63s coupe 600bhp mapped, in 2019 I finally gave up on AMG’s after finding the after sales customer care literally non existent and how the cars are built so moved onto Audi’s -- happily drive an R8 plus coupe 🤨
Young rich nigga! That’s awesome
I see no reason to hate the engine, exepct the reliability, but for sure one of the greatest engine made, that 6.2 n/a madness is the most thrilling engine I have felt
Love the vid, makes me appreciate my S63 even more now! :)
I’d like to see a M159 upgraded C63 fully modded. It’d be sweet! Has anyone done one or is it not worth the money?
Can you make one on the M157 please!!! I want to know more about my engine, LOL. And I really appreciate your channel a lot as well and might be getting a w211 or w210 E55 depending on the deal I could find. I currently own a w218 CLS63 and want to make that a garage queen.
Kyle Li watch the video from Tasos. It is a good engine. Its weak point is the coating they used in cylinders. I suppose m157 won’t be very reliable in the long run either.
I watched this video stuck in a traffic jam in my c180 😆
AMGmeister, Kudos. Love your videos. My AMG loves you. :-)
Would’ve you recommend changing air filter box and intake from US to European one?
Yeah, the M156/159 has its troubles. But I can't think of any other high-displacement V8 that's as responsive or free-revving as this is. And with a soundtrack like this engine has, IMO, it's one of the best N/A V8 engines ever produced.
Lexus v8s revs up to 8k and are among the best and most reliable v8 engines plus the N/A sound is amazing
Thank you for this amazing content you are producing. ♥️♥️
Please do M157 E63 AMG.
I’m gonna get a 2014 E63 AMG. I need all the specs like you did on the E55.
Watch Tasos' videos. The aluminum silicone cylinder coating is a very serious concern. 4.7 liters engines in w212 E550 have the same potential problem. Other than that it's a good engine. But unlike lifters in m156, the cylinder coating can't be fixed.
@@alexandrasharabrina9051 I'm talking about the 5.5 v8 on the AMG. that's the one I'm looking to get
@@zali9657 well you said m157 or 2014 e63. That's the engine I am talking about too. It's based on m278. Those engines may have serious problems caused by cylinder coating .
I agree that the cylinder coating is a potential issue.
What an awesome video! Also please do a video on the m157 engine?
