The live version of Vortex must not have been a Napalm Records release, they do not block any of the content of the bands they rep. Napalm believes in the positive use of reactors to help in promoting their artists.

ACD Drums are an Austrian company that manufacture direct drive kick and hi hat pedals. Vlad is sponsored by them. He also uses a remote hi hat that sits in front of the traditional hi hat that he usually uses to keep time and keep the song moving during slower parts of songs. He also rolls his stick a lot to produce the ghost notes and that could be why the high elbow. Fun fact is that he is actually a classically trained pianist and taught himself the drums to join Jinjer

Fascinating. The first song I ever heard from Jinjer (like a lot of people) was Pisces. I immediately thought of Rush. Now I know why! Seeing these folks for the second time live in a couple weeks in Milwaukee. I am STOKED!

Aw dude! I would murder to see that Milwaukee show! Only 3 shows in America this year, and you're seeing 2 of em? I'm jelly! Hardly anyone says it, but like you I heard Rush right away in Jinjer. I've been a moon-headed Rush fan since 1977, and saw them thirty-six times live, including that very last show at the Forum in LA.
The two bands sound nothing alike, and I've never heard anyone in Jinjer mention Rush. What I hear is the musicianship, the passion, the dedication, the integrity, the compositional nature of how they write, the group chemistry and cohesion.
Jinjer is my favorite band since Rush retired. The baton has been passed to the new generation, and Jinjer has picked up the torch.

The tape is likely more for dampening than tuning....one way to get a drier sound.
Vlad is a classically trained piano player....how he arranges/writes his drum parts, how he plays the kit and his sonic tone (drier sounds) makes perfect sense, given his classically training on piano. All the textures, cymbal dynamics and ghost notes helps give a bigger sound to the band in a tasteful way.
Vlad has mentioned he pretty much built his kit around his main cymbal....a 22" Zildjian K Custom Special Dry Crash. It's a beast of a cymbal...dry, dark, yet explosively powerful. It's the big cymbal out front, just left of center. He has a 21" size of the same crash on the right side.
His current piccolo snare (firecracker) is 10" diameter x 6" deep and is cranked even higher than in this video.
Vlad is one of my favorite drummers.
FYI, China cymbals are not so much turned inside-out...it's just that in modern drumming nearly everyone mounts China cymbals upside down. Billy Cobham popularized mounting China cymbals this way back in the late 60s and early 70s and now I can't think of a single drummer in rock or jazz that doesn't mount a China cymbal upside down. Less easy to crack and more explosive for sure.
    Cheers. 🥁

That was interesting and educational, even to a non-drummer like me. Add me to the list of those who would love to see you analyze the drum work of Nightwish's Kai Hahto. The Army's nickname for him is "The Human Metronome". And, much as I would love to see you analyze a Nightwish drum cam, the best video to see what Hahto can do is to watch the video where he is performing Wintersun's "Sons of Winter and Stars." Heck, I wouldn't mind if you did a video from a Nightwish concert also.

In the mics those toms probably sound much better. I'm not a fan of the tape either. It drove me to find my own solution that I don't see a lot. I would cut old drum heads into a ring and then also cut the metal hoop off (Remo so it would be the poly hoop if it is a different brand and not metal) and then put it under the new head and tune it the normal way. it's a little closer to the effect of adding mass to the head than it is choking the sound off. I'm looking to do some experiments this summer using magnets. Guitarists often talk about pickup height and how if the pickups are too close to the strings their sustain goes away because logically the magnet is restricting the movement of the string. So I want to try putting a washer or metal dot on a drum head and seeing what kind of head control I can get from it.
There are several really good drum playthroughs from Vlad but my favorite is his Mediator playthrough. Everything you see here just 100 times more of it.

Great reaction and analysis, thanks! Bassist here, but I enjoy breaking down and learning all the instruments in great songs. All the Jinjer playthrough videos are amazing. And all their songs are extremely challenging (and FUN!) to play. So much so that I haven't tried yet to learn any of the guitar or drum parts--I'm still busy with Eugene's crazy bass parts! I spent most of the last two days STARTING to learn Call Me a Symbol on bass. It's nuts. Someone should do "bass player reacts" videos for Jinjer. I could go on and on about how weird Eugene's playing is!
Like you, I'm reminded of Rush when I hear Jinjer. The Professor did have a similar way of approaching his compositions. That exacting intention he had, each riff and fill unique within the song. (Interesting that they're called "drum fills"--designed to fill space. Neil did it so well for a trio, and Vlad's role is much the same.) Hardly ever the same fill twice in one song. Extreme dynamic range and range of expression. Use of unusual colors.
I do love the way Vlad uses the bells. Often one right after the other, ding ding, often in combination with other small cymbals or the bells of his rides. Usually stuck in little pauses in the music, or to accentuate a guitar/bass phrase. Dmitriy Kim did a little of the same thing. I wonder if Vlad picked up the idea from him.
And those ghosts on the snare! Lots of drummers use them, but they're kinda a trademark for Vlad. They're everywhere throughout their songs. That high elbow on the snare hand makes the angle look more efficient--he does it with both hands. Vlad could be on Scooby-Doo, he looks like he's seen a g-g-g-ghost! Someone said after Jinjer plays the venue is haunted, there are so many 👻👻👻.

1:40 - ACD Drums are an austrian drum hardware company. Vlad doesn't use any triggers, the laptop behind him is used for launching backing tracks and the click tracks for each song that everyone in the band has in their in-ear monitors.
13:50 - Well, he's self-taugh, he has no formal drum training, so I guess he composes drums like a pianist, which is the only instrument that he any formal training on. 😉

    Vlad's 2 layer/low-flat layout : just like a piano keyboard.
Vlad's use of the cymbals : they are his black keys.
Vlad's composition : pretty sure that, if he approached percussion in any other way, he'd be bored to tears.

11:56 he changes his live setup a fair bit. Sometimes he uses two big floor toms, sometimes only one. Sometimes he sets up a hat very low near the bass drum for washes and sometimes its not there at all. I have seen times where he had a snare and two piccolo snares, sometimes just a snare and one piccolo. The common threads always seem to be lots of cymbals very low, no rack toms whatsoever and at least two snare drums. I think he just sets it up however he feels comfortable that day. Its real nuts when you know what his recording rig was like for the albums he has been on so far. I recall quite a few mics on the snare and also a ProCo Rat pedal being used on one of the snare bottom mics if I am not mistaken.

"Copycat" would be a great song for this, as the drum part is incredible! There's a cymbal pattern that's repeated as sort of a mini-chorus in drums only that's just mesmerizing, and it's a really cool video! IIRC, the song video is a performance-style music video.
