    Her enunciation is immaculate. She doesn't chop the final sounds - when a word ends with a letter, you hear it.

    It is *very* easy to become distracted by Eugene's bass work- no need to apologise!!
    He is the most virtuosic both-hands-always-busy-yet-always-musical-and-in-service-to-the-song bassist in heavy music imho.
    To show you how good he is, I'd love to see you do a vid on Jinjer's gorgeously thru-composed single "Vortex", & then once you've recorded that, treat yourself to watching the bass playthrough vid which Eugene uploaded- it's a drop-A 5-string #MasterClass with *all* the techniques, & a blueprint for how to enable a single-guitarist heavy band to sound HUGE. If you're not impressed, I'll give you your money back myself! ;)

    You said you are listening to Slaughter to Prevail. If you want to hear a master of false fold singing, you need to listen to Lorna Shore. Will Ramos is a god in his growling dynamics. I recommend To the Hellfire (one take vocals). For Jinjer, I would look at Perrenial (Live at Wacken) and Pit of Consciousness (Live in Kiev). The later highlights her lowest of lows.

    It's wild that she hasn't had formal training, with how well she modifies her vowels in both the clean and harsh vocals. On top of her insanely good diction and control. I think your next one should be Wallflower - the jazz influence is strong with this band.

    I'm 48 years old, and up until a few years ago I absolutely hated growling and any kind of harsh vocals. I was also not that fond of heavy metal over all.
    Then I found Tatiana, and now I absolutely LOVE it! 😄
    I have realised that I had only heard bad growling before. Tatiana has made it into an artform, and she has been my gateway drug into harder forms of heavy metal, and I am finding more and more good growlers.
    My favourites with Jinjer are now some of the most harsh ones.
    Also Tatiana is a fenomenal performer on stage. I love "who is gonna be the one", the official live performance from Napalm Records UA-cam channel. That shows off both her awesome growling (almost all growl in that song, except for a surprise, as usual), and one of her best stage performances I think. She was on FIRE that day.
    I also LOVE the official video to "home back", partly because of the awesome singing and growling (the deepest guttural growls I have ever heard from her), partly because of the awesome music, partly because the imagery of the video (GENIOUS video), and last but not least, the topic and absolutely heartbreaking story of the lyrics. She is an absolute POET, and I actually choke up when I listen to that song.
    Now THAT is something I never thought I would experience. Choking up during deep guttural growling!! I never thought it would be possible. And to think I used to HATE growling until a few years ago! 😄
    Good reaction and breakdown of her singing man 👍

  • @ericpeterson7512
    @ericpeterson7512 4 місяці тому +3

    Great r&a, thank you for your insight! Your speaking voice is very rich and mellifluous. Yes I said mellifluous lol.
    BTW that was a 4/4. They just play across the bars so effortlessly, and accentuate notes and phrases so unusually, that even a 4/4 often doesn't sound or feel like a 4/4 in Jinjer's hands. In fact this whole song is in 4/4 (with the tiny exception of two transitions, which are each a quick two beats) which is unusual for these guys. Note how her voice carries the 4/4 in the chorus ("this is what it is...") while the instruments throw the emphasis all over the place. That's very Jinjer.
    And no, it's not the same song you reacted to before--you had it right, that was Pisces. The dead giveaway is the surprising Reggae part in this song, with the clean guitar emphasizing the 2 and 4. The two compositions have the similarity that there is stark dynamic contrast between heavy parts with harsh vocals and very clean parts with clean vocals. When you go back to Pisces, note how there's more air and softness in her clean tone, emphasizing innocence. She purposely makes it softer than usual, in duality with her shocking harsh phonations. Duality is the theme of that song, and her voice is the perfect vehicle.
    She is a phenomenal voice actor, telling a story with her voice very much like an opera singer--but with more tools in the toolbox! She has way more than two modes. She's like a master painter with a palette full of colors, and different brushes and tools for varied textures. To me this sets her apart from all other singers.
    And she doesn't have any clue how she does it!
    I'm gonna make a couple suggestions. Two names: Melissa Cross and Elizabeth Zharoff/The Charismatic Voice. Elizabeth has an extended interview with Tatiana where you can see (along with the fact that she's a beautiful, charming, quirky, humble person) that she is clueless about how she does it. You'll be shocked by how intuitive and innate her ability is. She's an absolute natural. A unicorn for reals.
    Melissa is the preeminent vocal coach to the stars of harsh vocals. Although she's more than that, and her method starts with speaking, then singing, and only then screaming. Her expertise goes back decades. She has been credited with saving the voices of many stars, including David Draiman of Disturbed. She debunks some of the fallacies out there about extreme vocals. She invented the phrase vocal fry. She identifies four ways to scream with different mechanics. She was one of the first to put an endoscope down the throat of a singer to observe the oscillations during harsh phonations. Her teaching methods are extraordinary. (One thing I heard her say is that it's not true that the folds vibrate at half the speed for harsh vs clean phonation.) She makes a primary distinction between classical singing and pop singing. In my opinion anyone who's serious about learning healthy ways of singing harshly should check out her videos.
    Also the Fairy Voice Mother has some excellent videos analyzing Tatiana's skills. And there's a good lesson series from Voice Hacks feat. Chris Liepe.
    I do believe the difference in perceived pitch of harsh vocals/noise is in the shaping of the mouth and soft palate. It's the difference between shaping "ooh" (low) and "aah" (high). There are infinite variations of vowel sounds, but I believe this is the key. Tatiana is the unschooled master.
    Please keep bringing us more Jinjer! Very enjoyable to see you going down this rabbit hole. They're a uniquely talented band. They've turned me into a reaction video hobbyist lol. Yours are some of my favorites.

    One thing about the "Perennial": Live at Wacken 2018 video is that it is the last song of their set and you can tell she is tired at the start of the song, at the end of the song she is out of breath but you don't hear it during the song.
    I'm going to suggest 2 vocalists who can add pitch into their screams/harsh vocal, just a bit either at the start or the end of the word/phrase. The first is Devin Townsend "'Kingdom' for EMGtv" ua-cam.com/video/nubJjB95VdY/v-deo.html singers/vocal coaches seem rather impressed with this one especially if they are opera ones. The second is Courtney LaPlante from Spiritbox, she has a few One Take performances, I'd recommend Circle With Me - Courtney LaPlante live one take performance ua-cam.com/video/zMnfkW9UZc4/v-deo.html

    On your point about endurance, listening to "Alive in Melbourne" is something else. If you listen hard it sounds like she starts the concert off cold, and is good, but not spectacular for the first couple of songs... but then by the time "Ape" comes on she hits her stride and is damn near flawless for the next hour. Tatiana has at least 5 octaves she can cover in growls (if you can call them octaves). There are live performances of her, especially with Vortex, where she drops into bass rumble territory, then she can hit high fry+false folds on the other side... it's almost like a squeak.
    I often wonder what she could do if she had any vocal training.
    You just heard reggae blended in, and you're confusing it with a jazz blend 😂. Wait until you hear folk, and rap, and ska, and punk, and...

    Someone who mixes harsh and 'normal' singing voice at the same time is Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom. Check out the song Are You Dead Yet, after the chorus he'll switch from just the harsh to the kind of mixed.

    I feel like her harsh vocals in Pisces were mostly pure false fold, whereas there may be more of a mix with some fry screaming here. I don’t really have deep scientific understanding of it, and I’m just kind of basing that on the sound and my own journey with learning how to do harsh vocals, since I honestly don’t know exactly what I’m doing to make the sounds 😂

    In all honesty my fave part of her performance is that brief, super-rhythmic reggae-style delivery. A bit envious because I can never nail a vocal in one take. But when teaching myself to growl I knew there had to be a viable way- these bands tour and the lead voices have to hold up. For devastatingly low growls, I suggest “Home Back”: by track’s end her voice hits the very bottom.

    • @ericpeterson7512
      @ericpeterson7512 4 місяці тому

      I hear only 4/4, with two quick transitions of one measure of 2/4 (could add those to one of the 4's to get a 6). I'd be interested to know where you're hearing the 3/4.
      Have you ever tried to count the chorus of Pisces? I'd love to see the chart. It seems open to interpretation. It's a matter of emphasis. It's almost like a single measure of 20/8, repeated. With one measure of 2/4 at the very beginning for the four-note guitar/bass riff. Sick!

    And this version is even better than the studio version. She really is an impressive vocalist. Also - you have to remember that she is quite small - like between 5'1" and 5'4". She frequently performs on boxes at the front of the stage to elevate herself (and it looks badass too...) so those low notes coming out of a smaller frame are that much more impressive.
    Edit: And a little interesting FYI - I have seen many singer/screamer/growler vocalists say that it is the singing that actually causes them the most issues with performing night after night, not the screams or growls. Goes to show that when the technique is truly mastered, the vocal cords do not play a part in their performance at all. As a matter of fact, in Jinjer's song Pieces, she has a beautiful belt - well live, she generally growls through that line instead because it is too taxing to belt that night after night.

    Also notice her physical presentation-very different from the kind of Goth schoolgirl look in Pisces.
    A lot of her pitch when she’s using false folds has to do with the way she shapes her mouth and throat, but once in awhile I think I hear her real voice creep in a little. She did tell Elizabeth (charismatic voice) that she rests her voice pretty strictly between concerts so I think it is somewhat rough on her throat.

    • @ericpeterson7512
      @ericpeterson7512 4 місяці тому +2

      From what I've learned, you're absolutely right about the perceived pitch of the screams. It's talking that's really rough on the throat. That's why she dislikes interviews while on tour. Harsh is the easiest, when done right. Clean belting and gravelly notes are fatiguing too.
      The biggest difference I notice in her recorded and live singing is that she rarely does glissando live (a smooth glide from one pitch to another). It must be one of the most fatiguing things for her. Like on Perennial where she goes "Finally reached the point of no retu-urn." There's a big gliss there on the record, no gliss live at Wacken.

    This recording was done with minimal effects (maybe none but I don't know for certain) on the vocals. Usually there is a fair amount of delay/echo added, along with compression and equalization too. And there are no additional vocals layered in either. Those are probably the main reasons why the perceived pitch is higher here. Anything that might enhance the lower frequencies has been left out.

    Jinjer is amazing, Tatiana is one of the top metal voices in my opinion. If she would ever co-op with Alissa White-Gluz and Linzey Rae I’d definitely buy that stuff.
    However, so 44 hours before you premiere the video; is it to late to write her name correctly? Her name is Tatiana Shmayluk.

    Interesting comment about it being harder to hear her clean voice over the music compared to the harsh vocals. It's a classic "engineering trick" to put some distortion on sounds to make them more prevalent in a mix. Normally done with bass and vocals to make them "pop" a bit more. She is basically doing that on her own with the harsh voice.
