This week, Ginny, Mike and Tom shoot the electric breeze on a variety of subjects, including Dacia's amazing sub £15k price tag for its new Spring, the arrival of some hot VWs that should be GTIs... but aren't, and a swimming electric car. The team also answer listeners' questions, including a tow car puzzler and a back seat storage conundrum.
If you have a car buying question or want to be included in our postbag, add your comment below or message us at info@electrifying.com.
Every week, the Electrifying.com meet online to discuss all the important matters at hand. Such as the weather, what we’re all having for our tea and who dumped who in last night’s Love Island. Between these heavyweight subjects, we also talk about electric cars. A lot. Probably an unhealthy amount to be honest.
And when we do discuss cars, we find out a lot. From industry gossip to the more mundane practicalities of electric car ownership, it’s the place where we dish the dirt on the cars we’ve been driving and deliver our own verdicts on the latest electric car news. We also like to have a good laugh at the daftest bits of anti-electric news that we’ve seen in the press.
We can’t promise that you’ll learn much. You probably won’t. But if you fancy 30 minutes of idle chat and gossip about the world of electric cars, we’re here for you. If you like it / hate it / think it’s too long or too short, let us know. - Авто та транспорт
As for the steering wheel heating in the EX30. That's actually a setting that will automatically turn the heating on when it's below 12C. It can be turned off in the menu. Having an automated setting and then it turns on automatically is not really a bug, that's supposed to happen. As for not being able to turn it off, some people have seen that, it's still possible to do, by setting it to 1 and then OFF instead of directly turning it off. A bit annoying, but should be fixed soon.
Thanks for the info. Found the setting & turned it off. Not sure why it was on in the first place. 👍
Great podcast!
Re the Fiat 500e being overpriced, I bought mine in December 2021 (with a discount) and have never regretted it. There are currently some pre-registered 73 plate deals to be had at Arnold Clark who are typically selling them from between £19 and £21K, which is around 60% of list price.

Went and had a look at the 2000 Paris Motor Show Ginny that you presented - nothing to be embarrassed about - Yes, the fringe, but still able to speak your mind. 🤣🤣
The Citroen Belingo/Peugeot Rifter/Vauxhall Combo are, IMO, the best value large dog cars you can buy (from owner of 2 greyhound). The new updated versions are about to come out with over about 210 miles wltp. So probably 160 to 180 real world. Also with heat pump option, and much improved interiors.
Love the podcast and the channel generally. Now 3 months into EV ownership.
Re car play, I may be the odd one out but I must admit I don’t miss CarPlay etc in my Volvo c40. The inbuilt mapping is great and the indication of arrival charge remaining and auto calculation of stops is very good, maybe not quite Tesla level but not far off.
It’s also the first car I have used where the voice recognition actually works most of the time.
Keep up the good work
Interestingly on early cars is my Smart #1 Brabus I bought on the day the UK order book opened. It came without Android Auto, Apple CarPlay or a heated steering wheel, all have been added by OTA upgrades.
Ginny… I was born interested in cars and watched your review videos for yonks… you’ve not changed a bit… 😊
@Ginny Remember the pervious episode where you had a glaring light source directly behind your head, and as you moved your head throughout the shoot the camera would struggle with the auto f-stop making it rather annoying for the viewer? Well, you accidently did it again. Now, if you don't care about that sort of stuff, proper studio lighting, videography 101 and such, then never mind. Otherwise, another great conversation. As always, it makes my weekends better. :-) Thank you!
I used to auto parking all the time on a corolla and miss it on the niro 😮
Used pre facelift Mg5 is my suggestion for a used dog friendly introduction to electric vehicles. Look how far away your nearest Mg dealer is. You’ll be surprised how many there are now
I buyed my MG ZS EV back in 2021 specifically to my 42 kilo black amstaff, if the MG 5 had been aviable at the time, It wasn't here in Spain, would been the one.
The Renault Scenic is our favourite choice when we replace our Citroen e-C4 next year. It pushed the Skoda Enyaq off the top spot.
Great discussion as always. Small quality issue, the 'ladies' camera is exposure hunting a bit... sorry.
Re: essential accessories, definitely the heat pump - I'm a great fan having five of them (fridge, freezer*2, tumble dryer and car) and hopefully replacement for the oil CH boiler soon. Park assist (not auto park) is essential. I spent a terrifying three or four months with a brand new Model Y before the software updates caught up. Despite the cameras, it was difficult, to say the least, to estimate where the corners of the car were in tight spots. Now there's much, much less parking stress. Final accessory is a speed limiter (Zoe had one, Tesla doesn't). I live in Wales with numerous 20mph limits and would like to keep my driving licence. 'Nuff sed.
Definitely worth checking out the 1998 Scenic review.
It is good to have this video drop before Wednesday when the world car of the year is announced. If the EX30 wins (unlikely I suspect) it would be fairly embarrassing for Volvo. Do the manufacturers doctor the press cars like diesel-gate? Did Ginny vote for it (or are votes secret)?
I might go and get a dog as an excuse to buy an Enyaq 😂
Seriously, I can't wait to see the Epic in the metal. I loved the Yeti, not a looker, but was quirky enough to be different. Whereas the epic looks nice, but the interior might be simplified and functional like they are doing in Dacia.
On the point with interiors, there are a lot of manufacturers opting to use fabrics on the dash, and I wonder, if in time, these will fade.🤔
Great video as always. When Tom quotes the killer deals could the source be referenced in the notes? I always struggle to find the deal he mentions eg ENY1 for £250 down and £250pm.
Cheers all 😀
How this is not on main stream tv I really don’t know , best chat show on here
One thing to find out, why don't all manufacturers have an emergency release mechanism installed on their EVs? Vauxhall is one & I suspect other Stellantis EVs don't have this either...
Auto heated steering wheel is an optional setting on my Polestar 2, might be worth hunting around in the climate settings.
I AGREE, please do a refresh of Dog friendly cars, esp the ones who have introduced dog or pet mode - this is a great feature when you just need to nip in the shop...
Just saw the old scenic review. Wow! Ginny 🔥.
I am a fan of Kilowatt Half Hour, so thank you. I also realise you are probably doing it on a shoestring. What would be good though is a clear time in the week at which it is released. Any chance?
To add to an earlier comment, there was discussion about efficiency and range.
To put this in context with all the ICE cars I have had I have never really worried about MPG, perhaps because much of my fuel was paid by someone else. I have always been more concerned about handling, mid range acceleration, and speed. Besides if you needed more Gs there were always places selling it every few Ms.
To translate into the world of EVs, I still do not care very much about MPK because most of the time I can charge at home where the Ks are close to £0.0 because of our renewables. The odd occasion when I have to use the high speed public charging network is not a major financial consideration. What does bother me about the public charging network in the UK is that it is patchy, and I might not be able to charge, which is why I drive a PHEV at the moment.
What does matter to me about efficiency is the size and expense of the battery to get around, because it impacts handling, mid range acceleration, and speed not to mention capital costs. Smaller batteries which do more with less are really going to matter. So I think the present concern about efficiency and range is actually more concern about the availability of the high speed public charging network and the price at which you charge.
I disagree with Tom that the Vauxhall Mokka is the same thing as a Peugeot e-2008. I tested the former and bought the latter. Much better driving dynamics, interior space and build quality/style on the Peugeot. Hopefully better residuals too although I bought a 2 year old GT Premium which had already taken its biggest depreciation hit! Also for Nicola plug in wireless CarPlay/Android Auto adapters are now readily available quite cheaply. We bought a £40 one from Amazon and it works great. Quite rightly as she says plugging in every time is a pain in the ass!
Ginny is wrong about the original Renault Scenic being ugly. Even had a decent advertising advert with Lightning Seeds ‘Life of Riley’ soundtrack. Mine was the original with the TD engine absolutely loved it. It is an aerodynamic shape and very practical load carrier., especially as the seats were individual folding in the rear and could also be removed from the vehicle. TD engine was economical (55-60mpg) only downside, a bit gruff on had acceleration, one car reviewer likened it to a bellowing moose. Had it for ten years and did 160,000miles in it. For a Renault it’s electrics were faultless not like wife’s later 2003 Laguna after 8 years everything was packing up on it and going awry.
After your advise I have ordered a Tesla Model 3 RWD. i did however have a double check of everything else around the same price. I have a neck issue so can't bend easily and am 6'2". I noted MG4, MG5 were almost impossible for me, even MG ZS unable to get in easily, BYD Seal was a no go. Volvo EX 30 and even C40/XC40 even though I could get in, room behind me was very dissapointing and my son who is equally as tall would not be able to fit.
Strangely Kia Niro EV and Hyundai Kona EV were good for size and had much more room as these were made as an EV and were better. Much better and smoother than my Kia E Niro 4+ but I agree the Kona seemed the better car. i believe you also came to the same conclusion. They were both good EV's and would make a great car, but for the nice spec and ensuring heat pump was fitted, pushed both over £44,000.
However retrying the Tesla Model 3 RWD, it was fantastic, quiet, relaxed, smooth ride and easy to drive. No hassle of indicators not behaving, the buttons worked well. The lack of other buttons was better as well as less time spent looking away from the road as heating was simply in the corner of the screen.
Thank you so much and I am pleased that I test drove a few other EV's and this let me see how far the new Model 3 was.
Given you run over every week - why not just call this ‘The Kilowatt Podcast’ and embrace a longer format!
I'm sure someone at BMW is a Hitchhikers guide fan. Heart of Gold reference.
What are your views on the 'Hyundai Casper' and has anyone driven it ?
great episode but still waiting for my proper EV hot hatch EV Renault 5 Turbo anyone 😂😂😂😂. Also can you do episode on EV startups and how that many fail like Arival, FIsker, YearOne, ... Thanks and greetings from sLOVEnia, Urban 😊
👍 Thanks for the half hour of fun and EV info. We had a test ride in the Fiat 500e Cabrio.
Nice EV, and the only reason we didnt buy it was. . . the starting price of €38.500 ! ! !
Now we are looking at the Citroën ëC3 Max or the Renault R5 Etech. Both about the same price, and same range. (up to 400km)
Pro for the Renault is the funfactor and range, . . but it has a NMC battery, which we rather not have.
Pro for the Citroën is the LFP battery, but it lacks the funfactor.
Question: would the NMC or LFP battery be a dealbraker for you, and if so, why?
They depreciate very fast so I'm thinking a good buy when used ones get to £10k or so, they'll still have a few years battery warranty left then too
Tom didn't say get a leaf. He said get a life 😮🤷♂️😂
Google Maps is sooo much better than Apple Maps, yes? 😜
Hi Nicola! 👋
Thats a bit bloody crazy
Personally I prefer the look of the EV4 concept because of the aerodynamic front end .
Can’t understand why car manufacturers still build ICE shaped front end ( dummy radiator grill ) . Becoming a pet hate
When do car manufacturers change the old 12V batteries to bigger ones and more reliable. I think Tesla use 16V lithium ones. Correct me if I’m wrong Mike. So much relies on those old fashioned batteries and with technology increasing???
You're right Hayley. Tesla seems to be ahead on the 12v (or 16v) battery front.
Car2play means you always have wireless CarPlay

Am I surprised that maybe one of the big car manufacturers might fall by the wayside no we wait and see on final note what happened to Tom Ford 🤔😎
EX30 candidate for worst car of the year! read my comments from earlier videos, took two people to open the bonnet, steering wheel heater wouldn't turn off, glove box wouldn't open, car wouldn't shut down without getting out and locking doors, voice control wouldn't work.

And Tom lol
It's 1998 for men and moters
when petrol prices come down when ev cars increases my family is going to buy a 6 litre diesel SUV
MG now matching Tesla with a 1.9% - 2.6% interest rate on MG4 and MGZS making them £250 - £399 a month on PCP over 4 years - Im just about to buy a MG4 X Power for £359 a month bargain !!
PCP is not the best finance it was created to fool people to buy more expensive cars
That is one seriously overweight chocolate Labrador😮
Brb
I don’t recommend the EX30
So many quality issues
Some idiot put a petrol motor into a Model S but it was an individual not Tesla who did this obviously. Skoda Enyaq however is at the control of poor VW software and where I live it's not yet released and when it does come will be very expensive as with any Euro car in my market whereas Chinese and Asian/Pacific car brands are cheaper due to lower transport costs. V2L is very important particularly with power outages, someone in Australia used it with their Atto 3 to run their child's dialysis machine during a multi-day power outage due to bad storms taking out the power and of course the step up from that is V2H & V2G.
Uncle Rich from Rich Rebuilds with ICE-T? In fairness he has done some conversions the other way too😂
Google is amazing in cars apple users are stuck in a closed ios
My advice to anyone thinking about getting the Volvo EX30 stop think and listen to the reviews. Its posher sister the Smart #1 is more expensive but after having the same platform it’s a totally different car with oodles more kit as standard and none of those issues mentioned. ❤. You don’t need the model i bought (Brabus) the premium is the sweet spot.
Is the #1 more expensive - especially now that they have introduced the ‘pro’ model at the bottom of the range?
@@adyblanchard5438 the pro maybe cheaper although the premium is fully loaded the one to get
Hooray, 500e goes petrol.
What do you mean by the Chinese are not buiding cars, what universre are you living in?
Could the ladies please stop interrupting Tom before he's finished , it's most annoying
That is problematic with most alpha hosts. And yes, it is irritating.
Mike really needs to be there to reign in the waffle
😂
The Chinese are only doing what Japan did to the UK Bike and Car Industry in the 50's and 60's. If the manufacturers wanna compete, build a better, cheaoer electric vehicle... Simples! `Collabs` MUST result in economies of scale and cheaper pices or else why bother? Seems `they` want retain the profit margin before mark-down pricing.

Ladies. EV’s are impressive but with residual values plummeting how can they be a sensible buy🤷🏻♂️
Buy one which is 1 or 2 years old and which will still have 6 years on the battery and drive chain warranty.
No new car is a sensible buy.
EVs now have normal depreciation. Reported as values plummeting…thanks media.
Ricardo should gather a Tesla. Even old cars are up to date…
