The only way or place I'll stay and ride out the hurricane is inside a tsunami pod, since it would protect me and whoever else is in there well from anything the hurricane may throw at it, especially flooding storm surges.
@@AquaTech225 I said serious hurricane, like Andrew that I rode out in homestead as a kid. The windows blew out and we hid in a closet. The whole town was destroyed. Cat 1 or 2 is not that bad unless you live in a flood prone area.
That's a pretty intense video! A really good friend of mine rode out hurricane Katrina on his 37 foot sailboat. He started dragging, all the way across St Louis Bay, watching entire houses float by him and was just waiting to go ashore when all of a sudden his boat stopped. Turns out he got hooked on an old steel cable that had been laying on the bottom for who knows how long. But he said afterwards that you couldn't pay him enough money to ride another hurricane out on a boat.

Probably safer out there as long as your anchored in multiple directions and far away from other boats.Bigger vessels get away from land and do exactly what you guys did-not saying it wasn’t scary as all hell,I’m sure it was but you lived. Excellent footage thanks for sharing
Nah this was incredibly stupid on a vessel this size. I am 37 as of a week ago and I've have had my captain's license since I was 19. I got my Masters license when I was 31. While I will say that they anchored themselves in multiple directions and the best way that they possibly could have what they did was incredibly reckless and dangerous and just stupid. A storm of that caliber on a boat of that size Just is asking for death. Oh and then of course that selfishly puts others at risk around you for a good people and if in sight will then try to save you and likely cause the same fate to themselves in doing so.
@@Jason-TheChad-Muska_circa1995 -- did they anchor themselves outside the mooring ball? I didn't see any other anchors. Indeed, really an unnecessarily risky move. All I know was upwind of them was pretty wide open. If I had that kind of draft as they do that little island below their starboard quarter is were i would have set three heavy anchors. On the plus side they went with what they had and all went well. Been doing this on my own for 45 years both commercially and under wind, I never hang on a mooring in any thing bigger than 35kts. The shrimp boats on FMB were anchored in multiple directions and they were piled up, flipped over, broken in half, etc. There is NO excuse to ride out a storm like that. Some stayed on their boats in Fort Myers tied up at the harbor. I live just off the river in NFM. Can't what they went through. There are still dozens of large vessels stacked up off West 1ST street about 250 feet from the river
I ran up the river to Alva the monday before the storm, from Fort Myers Beach. Looking at your footage, I just don't want to think about what would have happened had we stayed. Our S2 Yachts 9.2c is a tank of a boat but I'm not sure it's tanky enough for that. Wind that stripped the paint off...
But the more compelling & interesting part of this would be some footage of what YOU all were doing while a hurricane stripped paint off the boat! The aftermath we can see anywhere on UA-cam but I really was hoping you could show us what hunkering down in a boat during a hurricane was like.
Thank you for sharing. You were incredibly blessed. Did you ever think of motoring to wind to mitigate some of the wind force? Also, what is the mooring anchored to? I survived in burnt store marina with minor damage. We had 2 gusts 200+. Good luck and fair winds!!!
Balls and ovaries of steel . anyone who says " hey a hurricaine is coming , let's just park the boat in the middle of the river and wait it out " hahahhaha natural selection at its finest . good for you both beating the odds!
That looks terrifying! I'm in the UK and hopefully buying a partially completed Richard Woods Skoota. Was there an alternative choice you could have made, or did you have to just sit it out? In the UK, I've never known wind to be so strong as to take paint off of metal. Crazy!
If I could go back and do it over I would NOT have stayed on the boat! We would have had a lot more damage because we wouldn’t have been there when that sailboat dragged into us in the middle of the night but I still don’t care. In Florida we like to have hurricane parties but this one sucked lol
Charlie completely took my home on the peace River. We rebuilt and sold the home & left FL. Absolutely no desire to go through anymore of that nonsense.
Staying on a boat in a Cat4 hurricane, not sure if that is having balls of steel, or just sheer stupidity, because no one is coming. So glad that you made it with no injuries and minimal damage. A lot of boats were not so lucky.
That hurricane was scary on land somewhere where it didn't flood. I could not imagine being on a boat during a hurricane. Especially Ian that storm went on and on and on. It was like the never ending storm. Glad you guys are OK.
At 1:06 you can see your bridle going through the mooring thimble and your line is clearly chafed and it looks like old chafe because of the growth on it! I would definitely have changed that line, maybe put a back up on and added chafe gear. You were quite lucky.
That's not even the spot on the bridle that I was worried about.......and down here in SWFL growth happens over night! The conditions in our waters are perfect for barnacle growth as well as every thing else. Our lines are 2yrs old and we will be replacing it before next season. I was more worried about the parts of the bridle that were rubbing against the boat just off the cleat. Thanks for you comment!
I didn't think the line looked worn at all aside from the damage from the storm. Either way my hat is off to you and your wife. I'm wondering if you would do it again.
I would never do that ever. I use to shrimp in Englewood with my dad growing up in, thunderstorms were terrible out there on the bay or in myakka river. That's crazy to me.
That must have been really scary being on your boat. Others who did same said never again. What a good mooring you have. And proper nylon bridal to take shock loads. A great testament to the quality of how you built the boat too . how was you land base property? Cheers Warren
Crazy...Looks like you were in intercoastal waters and not the Gulf, right? My mother (RIP) lived on Casey Key...Not sure what damage they took other than trees and power poles down.
Still a very good place to take an impressive picture damage since you can't even access the barrier islands unless you live there or or contracted to work there.
Yep, sometimes we scare ourselves. After Bob I will never ride out another. Truth be known after the wind hit 35-40 mph there was no getting off, our minds were made up for us so a 70 lb CQR, 3/4 inch line, 300 ft of 1/2 chain with oversized large Danforth, and my lunch hook held including a boat that drifted, his CQR anchor climbed my anchor chain, I felt terrible setting him free but its every man for himself. Rigging was getting tangled. Boats adrift caused serious damage.
@darlajean1045 that’s some experience! How strong were the winds for you? When it came through NC we had 80 mph winds and it almost blew me off the dock here when I went to check our boat with my hubby.
About 3 miles away from us at a marina they had a top wind speed record at 203mph 😣 I was to busy crying to record the bad stuff lol plus everything was just white with rain around us. thanks for watching!
Why wouldn't you move further north of it? I was in my rv in Okeechobee and was petrified the winds got above 65mph and lifted me up once about midnight that was when I called my neighbor to come get me even though I didn't want to leave my cats, I'll never stay again that's for sure!
Was that Don Pedro Island? I am glad I discovered your channel, I hope some day to live aboard a trawler. Seeing you all successfully survive the storm, God willing I may never have too...but I am always open to learn. God bless🙏
Where we’re you moored at? Looks like you were all very lucky, but the big question is though…… Would you do it again, ride it out on land in a house or evacuate next time? Because we all know there will be a next time and quite possibly worse than this time!!
I'll go take a vacation in the mountains for the next hurricane lol I've lived in Florida my whole life (37yrs) and this is by far the worst hurricane I've ever seen. I don't think we'll see another that big and strong in this area for a very long time.......I hope 🥺

Your documentation is valuable. Almost priceless. What!? Get on yada said, she did say she did she did , yall. Take care. Childs of men. Go on now!
that was brave! glad your ok!
Brave? Hhhmmm🤔
Brave ????? Not how i would describe it.
*you’re
Nothing brave about this,, just stupid.. They would be the ones screaming for rescue during the storm and complaining that it never came... These idiots are putting other peoples lives on the line because they're not smart enough to leave their boat. Please dare me to say that I'm not right!!! I was there listening to the please for rescue..
@@smokendt ……..I dare
Eeek!😬 Do you live in your boat? Is that why?🤔
Y’all are bats*t craaaaaazzzzzzyyyy! 😂😂! Thanks for the footage and sooo glaaaad y’all survive but nonetheless crazzzy is what y’all are! Be blessed 😇 😂
Man that’s crazy AF!!! God Bless❤
You were very very very lucky
Hello how are you doing?
You spelled stupid wrong
I can’t believe that real estate sign. Made it thru untouched.
Thank u for sharing.
Wow that very brave of ya'll to stay out there.. how did your boat not capsized? almighty God was watching over you..
Looked exciting!
Dude says: that Betty jean that's the crazy for me!LOL
But the more compelling & interesting part of this would be some footage of what YOU all were doing while a hurricane stripped paint off the boat! The aftermath we can see anywhere on UA-cam but I really was hoping you could show us what hunkering down in a boat during a hurricane was like.
You risked your lives for a video. Well done.
You watched a video I risked my life for. Well done.
Consider yourself very lucky. Just 10 to 20 miles further south it would have been RIP.
Don’t forget the Coast Guard 🎉too
Thank you for sharing. You were incredibly blessed. Did you ever think of motoring to wind to mitigate some of the wind force? Also, what is the mooring anchored to? I survived in burnt store marina with minor damage. We had 2 gusts 200+. Good luck and fair winds!!!
Multihulls are worse. I’d be concerned about taking flight ✈️
That bridle worked great 👍🏼
Balls and ovaries of steel . anyone who says " hey a hurricaine is coming , let's just park the boat in the middle of the river and wait it out " hahahhaha natural selection at its finest . good for you both beating the odds!
Thanks for the video. I’m so glad you made it with little damage. We’re you terrified during any of it?
Staying on a boat in a Cat4 hurricane, not sure if that is having balls of steel, or just sheer stupidity, because no one is coming. So glad that you made it with no injuries and minimal damage. A lot of boats were not so lucky.
That hurricane was scary on land somewhere where it didn't flood. I could not imagine being on a boat during a hurricane. Especially Ian that storm went on and on and on. It was like the never ending storm. Glad you guys are OK.
I don’t understand who does this. No one is coming to save you when you need help.
@@jasonmeador3144 no way!
I would never do that ever. I use to shrimp in Englewood with my dad growing up in, thunderstorms were terrible out there on the bay or in myakka river. That's crazy to me.
That must have been really scary being on your boat. Others
who did same said never again. What a good mooring you have. And proper nylon bridal to take shock loads.
A great testament to the quality of how you built the boat too . how was you land base property?
Cheers Warren
Our house is in Port Charlotte and had no damage. We were very lucky! Thanks for watching 😁
Now what intelligent person stays on their boat when warnings of level 4 hurricane is on the way. Happy they are still alive. Geez
It is actually safer-most times- to be on the ocean instead of land. I couldn't have done it but as you can see, they made out better than the land.
With all the falling trees and flooding I would have rather been on the boat. With gusts of 208 and sustained winds of 176mph being in town was worse.
Crazy...Looks like you were in intercoastal waters and not the Gulf, right? My mother (RIP) lived on Casey Key...Not sure what damage they took other than trees and power poles down.
Maybe it was safer to sail out to the ocean and go north?
Still a very good place to take an impressive picture damage since you can't even access the barrier islands unless you live there or or contracted to work there.
Hi guys !! Send us something from the Bahamas please
Hope your having a blast!!
Mark from-Off the grid adventure boat
Yep, sometimes we scare ourselves. After Bob I will never ride out another. Truth be known after the wind hit 35-40 mph there was no getting off, our minds were made up for us so a 70 lb CQR, 3/4 inch line, 300 ft of 1/2 chain with oversized large Danforth, and my lunch hook held including a boat that drifted, his CQR anchor climbed my anchor chain, I felt terrible setting him free but its every man for himself. Rigging was getting tangled. Boats adrift caused serious damage.
Wow, amazing. You both did it and survived. I guess you take boat out far enough from land and ride it out.
It was Ft. Myers Beach that got the direct hit. Everything north of that was a lightest part of the hurricane.
fort myers got the storm surge but we had the wind. sustained winds of 170mph with the highest gust recorded of 205mph from our local marinas
Did the people on Toby Two make it? I wasn’t sure if the RIP was for the boat or if the people didn’t make it. Glad you guys made it okay.
Luckily they weren’t on the boat!
@@darlajean1045 thank you - glad to hear it.
Next time I would recommend a second anchor... and trying to be somewhere without other unmanned boats in the area...
You were very brave, we live in N. Ft Myers and it got very hairy at our house, and we didn’t even have to deal with the storm surge
Is there any reason why you stayed? Couldn’t you have left that area and headed far away from Ian?
Smart thinking. I have to invest in a boat.
Wow you guys have the biggest kahunas I've ever seen! I would have been a panicked mess. Omg
Can’t imagine what that sounded like! You would have been blown off the boat if you were out in that! 80-90 was all I could stand.
Glad u guys are OK afterwards
Why wouldn't you move further north of it? I was in my rv in Okeechobee and was petrified the winds got above 65mph and lifted me up once about midnight that was when I called my neighbor to come get me even though I didn't want to leave my cats, I'll never stay again that's for sure!
Is it safer on a boat than on land ?
Hello how are you doing?
So scary, luckily you didn’t get hurt in any kind of way
Was that Don Pedro Island? I am glad I discovered your channel, I hope some day to live aboard a trawler. Seeing you all successfully survive the storm, God willing I may never have too...but I am always open to learn. God bless🙏
Where we’re you moored at? Looks like you were all very lucky, but the big question is though……
Would you do it again, ride it out on land in a house or evacuate next time? Because we all know there will be a next time and quite possibly worse than this time!!
I'll go take a vacation in the mountains for the next hurricane lol I've lived in Florida my whole life (37yrs) and this is by far the worst hurricane I've ever seen. I don't think we'll see another that big and strong in this area for a very long time.......I hope 🥺
