You're absolutely right. "Fat, fat, fat in our food is a satiety trigger." Many people think that it's not the fat, but the protein that is a satiety trigger. This has been dispelled many times. Fat makes you stop eating. Protein or sugar doesn't. Thank you for saying this Dr. C.
I would not personally test that hypothesis. I'm betting I would increase or at least match my calories, until satiety, from pure fats, than from a balanced meal.
Pure protein would be concentrated or isolated amino acids in the form or powders, drinks, or shakes. Meat contains a few hundred things instead of just protein. Those powders and shakes could cause a rise in glucose due to their highly processed and purified nature. I would think real meat portions with enough fat in it would be satiating or close to neutral in that regard.
I’ve ‘known’ this for years, however n of 1 tells me I’m an outlier to this ‘rule’. Fat does not trigger satiety for me, and yes, that’s with zero carbs and even no protein. I’ve experimented from every angle. I’d love to be wrong on this 😞
This is one of the best channels about eating wisely. I like the way he explains complicated subjects. He speaks with clarity and little breaks between sentences, so his audience can ponder his words. I followed his recommendations for about 2 months and lost 15 pounds. Great job, doc.
This is food for thought. I moved into the carnivore space 4 months ago and have not regretted it. However I found I was bursting with so much energy I was having difficulty sleeping so I joined a gym. Since then I've noticed my blood sugar has crept up and I've put on a kilo of weight. I am not eating more but as a diabetic in remission I am concerned. The positives are that I am sleeping really well and I can climb stairs using alternate legs which I haven't done for 8 years and feel great. The trainers think I could be developing muscle but I think your advice on protein/fat ratios is worth looking at especially the rising blood sugar.
Pure protein would be concentrated or isolated amino acids in the form or powders, drinks, or shakes. Meat contains a few hundred things instead of just protein. Powders and shakes could cause a noticeable rise in glucose due to their highly processed and purified nature. This may or may not apply to your situation. if I remember correctly, some prescription steroidal drugs might cause an increase in blood glucose.
I'm wondering if the rise is from the exercise. But also wondering if you're still experiencing some insulin resistance. So the higher blood glucose is requiring more insulin. You also might not be fully fat adapted yet as well, so the body is relying on converting more of the protein to glucose. I would say keep an eye on things, but over time all that should improve. If you're diabetes has only been in remission for 4-8 months, you still have lots of healing to do, I would presume. Amazing it's in remission though! Good work
It is a well documented TEMPORARY sideeffect of transitioning into fat adaptation for glucose levels to be elevated. That will reverse and go lower than before after a few weeks. If you are curious as to why that is check out Ben Bikman or Dr. Chaffee. Cheers! And enjoy your journey to optimal health!
True doc! So easy to get high protein as carnivore. Back in my thirties i went on a mass gainer regimen with a "healthy" whole food diet ( high carb, low fat, high protein) and it was hard for me to hit my daily protein target of 180-200 grams (even with supplementing w protein powder)... now as a carnivore (and no protein powder), my lowest protein intake is roughly 250grams. Now, im just concerned w getting enough fat and according to my tracker, i land between 60-80% calories from fat daily. I work a very physical job and workout most of my free time. Currently 42yo. 5' 10" maintaining about 170 Lbs. Good energy!
Great lecture! I had extensive bloodwork done last month after 14 months carnivore. My S-BUN and S-urea came back a bit elevated (24.6mg/DL and 8.8mmol/L respectively) and my HBa1C just under the threshold of "prediabetic" at 5.6 However, my doctor was not concerned because all my liver and kidney tests came back normal (ALT/AST/Gamma gt/eGFR), my thyroid markers T3/T4/TSH all normal, my HDL is double what the triglycerides are (1.5 vs 0.75), fasting insulin 3.0 mIU/L, uric acid low at 0.27 mmol/L and creatinine normal range. He said i was likely a bit dehydrated at the time i had blood drawn which caused the elevated BUN/urea and the HBa1C being slightly high is because the red blood cells live longer on carnivore and are exposed to blood glucose for longer, which affects the HBa1C reading. (false elevation) My protein intake daily averages around 180-200grams
I really appreciate the work that you do Dr Cywes, but as someone who has taken care of elderly relatives, there are definitely people that have trouble eating enough protein. Many of these little old ladies are content just having a few crackers per day. And they waste away becoming severely malnourished. I always had to find ways to make them eat a bit more, having to make meat purees to make it easier for them to eat. Also as a bariatric surgeon you know that many people that have bariatric surgery have trouble eating enough protein and tend to prefer to eat highly processed food that are easier to digest
Terrific video! I've been on a carnivore way of eating for almost two years now and while the improvements in my overall health have been impressive I do still struggle to eat as much fat as I know I should. Most meat that you can buy in stores is far leaner than is ideal even if you're looking for it. Sure, if you eat beef brisket or pork belly for every meal you'll get there but that's pretty tough to do. For me I think the biggest issue is that I'll sometimes forget just how great eggs are as a healthy food.
Thank you so much CA Doc!! I was concerned about protein with all the different opinions out there. I will never chase protein again. I do get adequate fat and don't do carbs so I guess I'm good. 66 And feeling great!
I make my own bone broths and fullfat greek yogurt..... my go to for satieting apppetite and fasting.... eat more whole foods and less packaged/processed foods low sugar no chemical sugars
The oxygen that acts as the final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain comes from the air we breathe, not from carbohydrates, fats, or proteins. During cellular respiration, macronutrients like carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are broken down to provide electrons and hydrogen ions. Great job Doc. It’s probably your best one . I will listen to it 20 or 30 times to digest it. I’ve already listened to it. Three times great job.
Thank you! Day 500 of carnivore today and my labs for the past few months have not been as I expected! Bun, triglycerides, fasting insulin, and LFTs are elevated. Will try reducing my protein intake and see what happens.
But first know that whoever set the levels probably have a ve$ted interest like statins, 'healthy' cholesterol numbers keep dropping to sell more statins and healthy men in the 1940 were in the 300s

Thanks for this video, however, I'm not sure I understood the main point. As I understand, per Keto, fat should be a significant part of a daily diet, also too much protein can cause some issues with its metabolism, and it will also keep you hungry. But then, doesn't it contradict carnivore, which is practically all meat? Another even more confusing were the comments on physical exercise, gym, etc. It is true that genetics play significant role in the growth of muscles. However, within your own limits, there is a lot of room for gaining muscle mass when working out with weights. From my personal experience in my college years, I was going to the gym 3-4 times a week, in 4 years gained about 10kg while my waste line did not increase, bench press from 30kg to 125kg, biceps circumference 39cm, my jacket size was two size higher than standard for my age/height because of my chest. Of course I never looked even close to some guys which were way bigger than me, but personally for me these were excellent results. My point is, physical exercises are very important, and I believe you will need more protein to grow your muscles, and growing your muscles is important for overall health.
🙏 Dr. My paleo journey... coffee and 🥚 and berries for breakfast. 🚶 or 🏋 or HIIT. Dinner is 8 ounces , 30 grams, and some veggies. Enough protein for me, despite the other formulas I see every day on UA-cam. I eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm full. Snacks are nuts, 🧀 sometimes with crackers and 🍿. Being fit you listen to your body and trust in. A nice place at age 69. BTW 🍻 every night. 🤗😋
cows walk those hills and preries like a million years ago, people don't. so using this analogy exercise aren't optional, they are absolutely necessary. what exercises specifically is much less relevant - you do what you want, but you have to do it, be that walking 10r steps or lifting iron or swinging those bells or just working hard enough.
Listening from Fiji 🇫🇯. Carbohydrate literally means "Water of Carbon" i.e. with the simplified formula C(H20) where C= No. of carbon atoms> 2. NB: Fat/Lipids also have three(3) basic atomic composition i.e. CHO while Protein is made up of CHON
I’m one of the few that had a bad reaction to the Carnivore diet. The stiffness in my ligaments muscles and now my spine has got far worse. I think my uric acid has been raised and settling in these places I need to reign back the protein and purines.
For resistance training, 1.5-2.0g/kilo bodyweight protein is optimal for muscle creation. I weight train 5-6 days per week and consume circa 150g of protein for my 92kg weight. Carnivore keto for 3 weeks. 2kg lost and losing weight, all fat, steadily.
Thank you Dr. Very well timed for me, as I am currently shifting my fat/proteins ratio. Curiously enough, Dr Dom D'agostino recently gave a presentation in which he was sharing "therapeutic ketosis". The typical example is in epilepsy treatment. In that context, the px are put on a 4:1 ratio of fat/protein. Which he admits, is very difficult for people to maintain. Do you have any rough fat/protein ratio that you subscribe to? Personally, or otherwise? Just curious. I guess I'm curious about overall direction. I find that fat is helpful in curbing Rottweiler syndrome. Which is VERY hard for me personally. Thanks again for the presentation!!!
Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen are elements not molecules. Glucose, triglycerides and proteins are molecules. As a Chemist nomenclature is important.
@@iheartcryptoverse2857 Definitions do not disagree; People disagree. In practical terms, when discussing elements, you are often referring to the bulk material or substance (like a sample of gold or a molecule of water), while when discussing atoms, you are focusing on the individual units that make up those substances. For example, when you say "water is made of hydrogen and oxygen," you are referring to the elements. When you say "a water molecule consists of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom," you are referring to the individual atoms that combine to form that molecule. In summary, elements are pure substances made up of one type of atom, while atoms are the individual units that make up those elements.
Exactly what I needed to know why I have hair raising bloodwork results after 2 years of strict carnivore. BUN-24, CREATININE-1.19, LDL-D=3500, LDL-C=500, TRIGS-199 ,HA1C-5.5, LDL-P=612. Apparently, after this video, I think I need to up my fat intake, reduce my protein portions and enhance my cardio exercise with resistance exercise. What say you?

I do think we need to look at the fats in the stomach and its effect on grastin and stomach PH positive effect, which seem to be a very important factor in the "activation/denaturating" of the polypeptides and Stomach break down of these peptides into small pepetides . Thus I see fats for Veg. type eaters to look into as these veg. ( lentiles, beans, etc) also has the carbs which seems to want to move quicker to the Small Intestine. Hance having fats with these vegs/beans items may provide a longer better PH in the stomach to denature the beans/vegs protien bases and have a better DIAAS score going forward.. This is just my thought! Please look into it.
From birth I was fed on kayro syrup and evaporated milk. We were malnourished throughout childhood as was my mother throughout hers. I ate better as an adult but always with loads of carbs and sweets. I am 70 years old and trying to do carnivore since the start of September 2024. Some days I feel great but some days my entire body seems to cease up. I have wondered if my body has to remake every brain cell and mitochondria. Has there been any studies on folks like me and what to expect. I have several autoimmune issues healing so I know this is the right direction but wonder if the game is more difficult if we never had the proper fat for brain cells etc.
I am eating a lot of protein and I have not lost weight, maybe gaining some muscle and losing some fat but I am below average weight for my height, I am quite thin. I do not want to gain weight, I just want to keep my muscles, I'm 73, 6'3" at 73 kg, BMI 20. I am eating 150-200 grams of protein every day. I do moderate exercise with dumbells every day and the kicker is I walk my dog 6000 steps or more a day. I eat very low carb and I am a metabolially flexible Ketovore. I will eat half an avocado every other day, most days I keep my fat intake low.
Great video , Dr Cywes. How about eating to satiety, acording Dr Berry? I treid eting to satiety , I consumed too much protein. I tried to increase fat intake. I gained weight. Simple physiology but confusing in practice...

Oxygen itself doesn't provide energy in the same way hydrogen or carbon bonds do. Instead, it plays a crucial role in the process of extracting energy from molecules like carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. In cellular respiration, energy is stored in the bonds of molecules (like glucose), particularly in carbon-hydrogen bonds. When these molecules are metabolized, they release energy as the bonds are broken. Oxygen acts as the final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain, a key step in the process. Without oxygen, this process would halt, and the energy from those bonds wouldn't be fully released. So, oxygen enables efficient energy production, but it's not the direct source of energy like the chemical bonds in food molecules are.
if starvation drives BUN up, does TRF as well, especially when combined with a 20h+ fast once a week? TRF above 15:9, with a 2 meals per day schedule? My BMI is 21 73kg with an average amount of muscle, and 80..100g protein, wih 2 times per week strenuous workout and a bUN of 22.5
Interesting, my BUN levels has been elevated part couple of years, they tell me because of fasted state. Also my night time urination has increased, I am no diabetic, is it possible that it is effect of to much protein or not enough fat/carbs? My fasting insulin last time when checked was 2.
So, I'm taking 10 grams of collagen peptides per day with a protein shake. Am I wasting my money on the collagen Peptides? I have heard different opinions. 62 year old male.
I've seen some research that would support collagen supplementation, but it may be of idiosyncratic benefit. I myself take collagen (make sure your supplement is clean, not comtaminated with heavy metals!) but if there is solid evidence that it's just flushing away my money, I'd like to see it.
i am 63y, did not see any effect of exercise on muscle building until I started with collagen (and AKG). There is research backing ths up. Dependent on your lean mass, calculate your protien by 1.2 o 1.4g/kg lean mass. This would includ the collagen. And then exercise, resistance training

I respectfully disagree. As Bikman states, gluconeogenesis occurs with lactate, glycerol backbones from trigs, then glycolitic aminos in that particular order of priority. You also forgot to account for all of the stored body fat that we use as fuel. Besides Omega3 & 6 fatty acids, there are no other essential fatty acids. Not everyone wants to be in ketosis 24x7 nor would it be ideal. Prioritize protein. Don't fear fat.
correct and according to Broda Barnes, Ray Peat etc - years of Low Carb ruins Thyroids Ask me how I know ugh So I have had to add in more veg and low sugar whole fruit (not grains and processed unk food, of course)
ahhh, a physiology expert. Bikman was referring to a catabolic state with a calorie dficit. Cywes is right: excess (!!!) protein is turned into sugar. and that happens regardless of available fat, because in case of excess protein that's nothing else than a dtox of the nitrogen.
@@monnoo8221 Of course. Ridding urea and other nitrogen compounds is absolutely normal part of physiology, such as with ridding of CO2 and water. Ketosis is a catabolic state after all. Eating too much fat can make a person gain body fat as well. Fats consumed and absorbed don't disappear. They get stored if in excess. That is the main issue I have with this space. It has become a fat eating contest swapping carbs with fats. Do you know what also raises blood sugar? Exercise. Now if we are being recommended to not raise blood sugar then by this logic nobody should be exercising.
… I wouldn’t say it’s from protein? Even the hungriest carnivores inevitably fast (lowering that uric acid thing) and avoid sugars and lectins… so gout is gone?

Love Fiji.. except when playing the Boks😊
And when providing a ratio, please specify if by weight or "energy/calories".

we cannot extract the chemical energy from fructose. Fructose can only be converted to fatty acid in the liver.
Yes or wasted in uric acid

Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen are elements not molecules. Glucose, triglycerides and proteins are molecules. As a Chemist nomenclature is important.
Exactly. Well corrected
Actually, the operative word in this context is atom(s), not molecule or element. Carbon atom, …, nitrogen atom.
@@yautja7146 Wrong. The definition of element disagrees.
@@yautja7146 Technically correct! Although in Earth-based nature, most are generally found in elemental form when not in part of a molecular compound.
Exactly what I needed to know why I have hair raising bloodwork results after 2 years of strict carnivore. BUN-24, CREATININE-1.19,
LDL-D=3500, LDL-C=500, TRIGS-199 ,HA1C-5.5, LDL-P=612. Apparently, after this video, I think I need to up my fat intake, reduce my protein portions and enhance my cardio exercise with resistance exercise. What say you?
he already said that! Try following his advice and don't hold your breath waiting for him to re- confirm the free advice already given. Good Luck! and MAHA 2024 ❤
Fat and fasting - and get outdoors!
Were you using dairy to increase your fat ratio?
What else would there be...bacon? Serious question as I always hear eat more fat but never hear what that is.
@@michelletrippi7782 Butter, tallow, olive oil, avo oil, coconut oil, fatty fish oil, meats like herring, salmon, pork or beef ribs and ribeye steaks, fatty hamburger, dark meat poultry, chicken with the skin on - there's a LOT of recommendations out there if you're really interested just google it.

I believe this is my first time hearing you Dr, and I’m thrilled to hear such fabulous descriptions of the amazing biology of the human body! I will be listening over and over to try to understand the best I can!
I got chronic fatigue from ablood transfusion back in 1998😮 i bet the answers are in cell wnergy conversion 🤔
I will raise my fat intake , I will post any difference next week, iear meet fish and eggs cooked in butter
Subscribed to learn more about energy production in the body. Thnx
I've watched my cows do zone two training. 🤗
if starvation drives BUN up, does TRF as well, especially when combined with a 20h+ fast once a week? TRF above 15:9, with a 2 meals per day schedule? My BMI is 21 73kg with an average amount of muscle, and 80..100g protein, wih 2 times per week strenuous workout and a bUN of 22.5
So what does it mean if BUN is low
Interesting, my BUN levels has been elevated part couple of years, they tell me because of fasted state. Also my night time urination has increased, I am no diabetic, is it possible that it is effect of to much protein or not enough fat/carbs? My fasting insulin last time when checked was 2.
Then what are we suppose to eat if we are suppose to eat 2000 calories a day?
So, I'm taking 10 grams of collagen peptides per day with a protein shake. Am I wasting my money on the collagen Peptides? I have heard different opinions. 62 year old male.
all I can find is science to support collagen with VERISOL and there are only3 products that I can find
It's better to get collagen from cuts of meat with the most collagen. Osso bucco, ribs, chuck roast, ground beef....anybody have more to add?
I've seen some research that would support collagen supplementation, but it may be of idiosyncratic benefit. I myself take collagen (make sure your supplement is clean, not comtaminated with heavy metals!) but if there is solid evidence that it's just flushing away my money, I'd like to see it.
The amino acids within will always be beneficial. Do the peptides do their magic without being destroyed by enzymes? Maybe, maybe not.
i am 63y, did not see any effect of exercise on muscle building until I started with collagen (and AKG). There is research backing ths up.
Dependent on your lean mass, calculate your protien by 1.2 o 1.4g/kg lean mass. This would includ the collagen. And then exercise, resistance training
Your too low in Salt if your fatigued Doc late in the day. on topic sodium moves amino acids through the body and the muscles
I have been passing out in the afternoon for 1-3 hours almost like I was drugged for surgery last couple of weeks. Will try increasing salt. Just got my Redmonds salt. Never heard of the salt-amino acid association. Thx. 3 months carnivore now.
Being on the diet now for four weeks and just had bloods done and CRS came back high at 40 & Iron and Ferritin are also therefore so when eating a lot of meat how do you keep Iron etc within nomal range, has anyone had this expeirence
What is ‘BUN’ ?
I'm not a tit. 🤣🤣🤣. Almost broke character with that one. But, a brilliant high-level summary of the (re-) emerging nutritional and metabolic science.
Harvard Public Health should be sued for the damage their bought-and-paid-for pseudo science did to our society since the early 60s. 😢
I go to the health club a lot, but far from being a gym rat. So I guess Im safe! :) Who Knew?
If there is no limit for protein, then are you saying that over eating protein will not raise blood sugar spikes?, 200 300 gram pre day
Stop being afraid of blood sugar spikes unless you're diabetic!
@@richardmiddleton7770 your crazy!! That's the cause of most all disease . Have you not been watching enough videos and doctors online here , that tell you to NOT spike your blood sugar often.

(No, this isn't in computer memory Mhz)
It’s not protein that I struggle getting in for me it’s fat I don’t see how to get more fat apart from frying in an oil and maybe adding some butter to your meat
@@KJB0001 Not sure who Broda Barnes is, but Ray Peat has been debunked thoroughly.
ahhh, a physiology expert.
Can the amount of times you poop be an indicator of too much protein?
So confusing when carnivores cure their gout by eating large amounts of protein.
… I wouldn’t say it’s from protein? Even the hungriest carnivores inevitably fast (lowering that uric acid thing) and avoid sugars and lectins… so gout is gone?
