Echo: Made In The Shade - How to build a hot rod under the trees.
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2016
- This is a short film I produced about minimalist hot rod builder Echo Tescier. I followed Echo around his back-alley shop under the trees. He's known for building Rat Rods. His current project is this 1935 Chevy Gasser Truck. For three days we shot footage, talked about life, cars, and then evaded the police. Please enjoy.
News: 2019- I'm working on a new YT series and channel called "Behind The Wheels". The concept is to highlight the interesting people BEHIND the wheels as much as the cars themselves. Now that Spring is here, I'll be taking my `68 Torino to shows and looking out for cool people with their interesting cars. It'll be fun to share their story with you all.

He's an inspiration. I'm 71 years old, and when I grow up I want to be just like Echo, only me.
This guy could never have a TV show because he actually knows what he's doing!
THIS is what is real.
Indeeeeed
Makes me want to go work on my 48 or 55 same problem money
Doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would fake it. Probably wouldn't get along with the producers in that regard.
TV is now controlled by SJW Feminist BLM LGBTQ ANTIFA Democrats.
He's living the dream. Doing it right. A successful man.
Everything I wanted to say was said in the first few comments so this is the best I can do. No skulls, no deliberate weld beads, no train bells, just a bring tears to your eyes real 50's, 60's RAT ROD.
Keep up the good work and the world does need more of your kind. Long Life and Good Heath.
I wish I had a neighbor like this guy, it would be a blast to hang out and watch Him work, maybe give HIm a hand here and there and just learn from Him.
Thank you for creating this. These rad old guys have the absolute best experience and stories about building hot rods. They should be recognized more often.
This guy is a legend should be more guys like this in world
I agree, Echo is a the real deal. He lives and breathes hot rods. No fluff, just rods. You can usually catch him at various cruise-ins around LA. Usually every Friday night at Bob's in Burbank. He's the nicest guy to meet.
True story. Back when men were men.
Guys like this are not welcome in this world! 😇
no question about it. rats rule the street.
@@lindalinda2158 The world is not welcome in these guys!
The first guy I've heard on the Internet, who knows, and can verbalize what makes cars look 'right'. I've been building hot rods and other stuff for 50+ years. I shake my heads at cars, sometimes, knowing a minor or moderately ride height adjustment would improve the look 100%.
So true ! I just put a lift on a first gen CRV and wow did I ever play with it to get the correct "look"
100% legit old school hot rodder. God Bless him!
Respectable, intelligent and humble human being.
That he IS.
Hes not only building the way they use to ....hes living the hotrod lifestile.....HES THE MAN....love your vids Karl X.
That dude has been doing this for 40-50 years, the same way I’m sure, and all the right reasons, his enjoyment.
It will be a pleasure to hang out with that guy he's full of knowledge Legend
did this exact same thing 60 years ago while in high school, 37 chev truck, found a ported and relieved flathead engine no one wanted,, isky full race cam, fenton dual carb manifold, borrowed dracing slicks, no money to speak of, all built under the trees. learned a lot that i use today. more kids should be getting their hands dirty this way. today still doing the same thing but with diesels
Love it, nothing but happy joy joy here folks, in England we are being stamped out slowly by legislation, ya can't build on the street anymore, on your drive way is the same, someone will complain saying you are a health hazard, even working in your own garage at home will get some busy body neighbour on your back about noise or some such, i had one project stolen and one set on fire and the police don't give a damn, keep fighting my man much respect from the UK.
No offense to you sir, but, fuck the UK, in the ass, with a double barrel, triple XL shotgun with sabot rounds.
It's time to give the police and the nosy neighbors lead poisoning if you know what I mean 45 caliber
caspers last stand me I was stationed in Cornwall England, thirty-some years ago, and I seen rods and cars and bikes while there. Really enjoyed my time spending time around the British royal Air Force and the Beautiful country. I never made it back there but I think of it all the time. Enjoy your country all that good food and stick to the cars scene. Lot of good folks from all over the world doing what we love best
these rods are very beautiful, this is essence of craftsmanship.
LOL!!! Polishing that imaginary window! Digging his one-off sense of humor. Guy's a national treasure!
UPDATE: Echo's rat truck is complete and on the road. MANY changes have been made since I produced this short. I hope to head back to LA soon for a "post mortem" video. Echo brings the bad-ass truck to Bob's in Burbank, so check it out if you're in LA. ALSO... Echo is looking for projects, so... if you want a rod built, please contact him before the shop fills up again.
get back to LA and do a show ''this guy is good like to see more, thanks for the show.
I'm working on finishing a couple more videos with Echo. One is a "Project Update" and another is a follow up to the Rat Truck build.
@@karlx-1 let's get those video out .please
Karl X any news when the update video dropping? Great video!
I love cars. I wish he could help on my project. Only if he lived in South Dakota.
Think he is very humbled. The 27T he talks about, I have it now and bought it in incomplete pieces and parts. Full build all over again. I’m almost complete. I have tried to keep what I can from his build.
Good old Dude. Need more people like him.
A truely individualist, need more of those in this world
I love guys like this, no big expensive garage, no TV show and he don’t have the “I build hot rods so I’m better than you” attitude...down to earth and doin what he loves. Keep doin what you love brother and have fun doin it.
This guy is pretty cool. I love how he does everything out doors and doesn’t want to be stuck inside. I also like his simplicity in life and I think that’s how everyone should live, just live with what you need.
Thanks for this video, I grew up around old drag racers. My Dad wrenched an raced with Don Noyes in Upstate NY, Don had a nationally recognized Gasser named the US Mule. Now I live in Southwest Florida and met an old guy that used to make metal model cars by hand and now he just fiddles in his shop all day and tells stories, He says Ron Covell is a good friend and visits him from time to time. The guy in the video reminds me of the toy maker ... some cool old guys
Hard core old school...This guy is a living legend.
This guy is a legend in his own right. Truly inspiring. I'm gonna go build a rat rod now.
It's been 10 months hows the rat rod going?
These are the best types of people to deal with also. I have done it for many years even back into the 70s. And I put together quite a few hot rods sold all of them except the one I have now. But I live out in the sticks a lot further than these guys. Even our neighbors would get really ticked off one mile from our house because we would go down and grease the roads with candy cane burnout all up and down the road LOL. But society looks at us like we are from another planet. Kind of a strange Paradox because I look at them like they are from another planet LOL. Really liked this video. People Like Us. Down to earth easy to deal with because if you are they are. They make the best of friends
Thanks so much for making this and Echo thanks for your honesty and doing what you love and believe in!
Nice piece of work, I love the ending where they're hiding from the cops with mischievous sparkles in their eyes, great film : )
You're a cool cat! You remind me of my hot rod father in law. Just subscribed, keep up the cool work👊
I love this guy. He’s got life figured out. How does he get money to build cars? Does he sell them? I know that engine on an engine stand wasn’t cheap.
A No Bull-Shit Hot Rodder- Makes the Best out of What hes Got! Sometimes Not Alot!😉👍🍻
*a* *lot*
My kind of person. Work with a passion and love it .
If he ever gets discouraged he can remind himself he's keeping an artform alive, making people smile and happy as they travel down memory lane or create new beautiful memories.
You can hear his little doggie panting. That is cool 😎
Reminds me of Iggy pop, like his minimalist outdoor attitude. Money is what puts all our projects to a halt, even digging up old stuff people know they can get ridiculous dollars for scrap, ditch the old clothing but keep every nut and bolt.
Yeah he made me think of Iggy Pop too.
subbed for revisit and update video this guy is the real deal with raw builds not many left in the world everyone goes with flashy paint with stock motors.
And colored led lights plugged into a cigarette lighter.
He is rich beyond most peoples dreams.
Well said
Well made little film . Really enjoyed it .
Pretty Cool 😎 stuff... really liked the Deuce..
This man lives the life I'm trying to reach
Great Video Karl Nice to see a real bloke Doing what he wants to do in life ( As long as it doesn't effect others )
I have always said if life was meant to be work, Home, & Sleep we would live in a 10 km radius of home, shops and work
This guy just lives and does what he enjoys
I hope to see more of your well produced Videos Please
Thanks Joe. Echo's radius is about 20 feet! The complicated and cluttered world leads to more sadness and depression. It's easier said than done though. My video site is www.grandfunalley.com I hope to produce many more videos. Trying hard to make a living at it. - Karl (Grandfunalley Media)
Moondyne .Joe vu vu pop
Karl, Dude, you gotta do more films on Rat Rod builders!
Thanks for sharing. Seems like a grounded guy....🤙
To me this kind of stuff is fun. Yes it's a lot of work but the rewards are great. Nothing better than comments on your ride!. These are some nice rides- it's not about how much $$ you put into it . it is the time and attention to detail, quality of your work.-- rock on man!!!
Much respect I'm a driveway engineer myself💪
Thoroughly enjoyed this video!! Keep doing what you do good buddy!! Great camera work as well!!
Keep it up brother, love what youre doin keep it original
The last of a dyeing breed keep them hot rods alive nice video
Way better watching this then som multi million dollar shop with mirror floors! A lot of gear heads can relate to this mans set up working outside on the ground and builds nice stuff! Good attitude too!
wow, I had those 3 in 1 AMT model cars - great attitude, wish he lived down the street
Great Guy . Excellent consepts

Good attitude. I have done up more modern cars but I've always wanted to do a '34 Ford. This is quite inspiring, like you say though it's all going to come down to money in the end.
Really good Film I'd like too see an update on this guy!
old master, great craftsman.hats off.
Just awesome!
Cool guy and nice cars . His back-alley workshop is an oasis in the concrete and asphalt jungle. A time trip back to 1970
How is this channel not viral or have more content?!!! Would love to see more on this guy
Awesome my friend.
Glad you enjoyed it Dave.
Nice work Karl.
I'm happy to announce that "Echo Made In The Shade" (along with others) will be shown in the U.K at the SummerTyne Americana Festival. Saturday, July 21st. It's a festival celebrating classic American culture through music and image. Many folks in Europe really dig Americana, and of course American Hotrodding.
"Echo Tescier, a hot rod builder in LA is one of a dying breed - a true free spirit dedicated to the art of building and driving fast hot rods." Please check it out! www.sagegateshead.com/event/summertyne-lounge-2018
Keep going bro. l'm also an old dog going for 66 now but still buildin V8's into anything solid to please myself. Love your dog too, faithful as hell.
Money is always the big obstacle
Yes money is always a problem but a little abit at a time it will get done sooner or later
From one metal-bother to another! Thank you, I love your spirit and totally understand your addiction, and may we never be cured. Best wishes to you from me and all the mice, deep in a French forest. (28 degrees outside, but 15 here in a 400 year old stone workshop). I think I will take a leaf out of your book and start working outside.... And grow a beard!! Bravo to you. Subscribed
Nice to see a true car guy building cool rods the old fashioned way.
Well it,s nice to See A Build being done bye you thks again Keep it up mighty fine to See Wow
Really good.
Good stuff man! I really enjoyed watching an ole schoool ( utmost respect meant) use his ingenuity, knowledge, an patience to create a moving work of art! HELLS YEAH TO ALL THE RAT RODDERS OUT THERE!!! KEEP THE KNUCKLE BUSTIN, LONG NIGHTS, AN HOT DAYS GOIN! Guys like you keep the hope alive for guys like me, that don't even own a car, much less have a license that wanna be a part of "Car Culture." I love mechanical automotive creativity!
I want more!
I wanna shake that mans hand he has some serious words of wisdom
Echo ! where the hell are you man you and me are built out of the same stuff and i want to shake your hand its been to long since i had the privilege of listening to wise men and i need more of this inspiration and a model for aspiration. I am 30 and live in coos bay on the coast in Oregon. i hope i hear from you, it is true what they say, 'where there is a will there is a way.' I find it hard to forget the love for things that people have long set aside and left behind, exiled to the scrap yard to be ground down and lost. it has been a challenge to keep true to these things when the world around us seldom has any time for stuff that isn't brand new. and to often these things are just outside of a realistic possibility, but i have faith in my lack of fear and determination to my pursuit of happiness. i know you are a treasury of that antiquity and its wiser ways. if nothing else thank you for sharing what you have.
Just found this, give you alot of damn credit for living life the exact way you want........most of us do not......and we have all kinds of excuses.......but are any of them valid?
Poverty
@@md-er2wz I'll bet this guy is" technically " poor.but I would consider him rich
I like that style! If I l8ved closer I'd offer to help ya out in that little shop. It reminds me of a shop a old friend of mine had out in the sticks of Pennsylvania. I spent allot of summers at his place! The good old days! Peace!
Sir you are a real steel master.
Well Echo you look like you've been rode hard and put away wet, but then a lot of us do. You know how to build rat rods and build them well. Strangely you know what they are , 98% of the crap they call Rat rods today aren't real anything. Building them out side in the sun is a major bonus, keep up the good work as you are a credit to hot rodders every where.
bob m this guy is not a hot toddler he is a rat builder, a guy who gets away with building pieces of shit that have half the work that a real hot rod takes!!!!!
@@XXX-qk2cq Everybody has different taste and style. If it makes his life happy who TF cares?
@@XXX-qk2cq I have to agree. I don't see anything spectacular about his abilities to build anything noteworthy. I do see a lot of crappy welds and extremely dangerous engineering.
Great video. Please do another one
This guy is the real deal. Respect
Awesome build and great video✌👊
About 1960 my future BIL and I would go 9 miles to another town where the local hotrodders had an old store, so old I never knew the original purpose. It was cold and dirty and disarrayed but full of guys building old 30's and 40's coupes and using big Olds, Ford and sometimes foreign power(somebody wiped out their Jag in the hinterlands and didn't care to retrieve it). It was a great group of guys just building whatever they had in mind and the parts they could get cheap. There was no rod with original anything but some of the body. It was fun though since I already had the bug. Several years later I'd have the "car to beat" for several counties around. People would just show up and want to race I had never met or seen before. it was a little poke I left the "275 HP" decal on the air cleaner lid that got to some of them. Hey, you didn't have to be Einstein to hear 12:1 compression and Arkus Duntov at work under the hood.
good man! reminds me of what I wanna be like !
Awesome story
Great vid.
This is real love for your craft NO million dollar shop set up for the camera.
very good video ; like to see more. thanks
Wow great work for that man brooo He has a lot of talent and no one wants to keep going with his Legacy thats Money if u have the money and the talent Damm thats Art God Bless this Man am al the way over Atlanta Ga i wished i know this Man 😎🤙 so he can show me his legacy nice work great Talent sad to C one Willing to Learn
Oh man.. Everything i want to say was said already..👍👍
Love the guy.... he came as he was. Living in the now.
I love the video!
"And the neighbors just got pissed off" "I'll go down there and tell that fucker to shut up" 😂😂
Idk about some of that welding. Wouldn’t stop me driving any of these though haha
I know what he means when he says money is an obstacle, I am always finding myself selling something cool that I built so I can fund the next project, I wish I could have kept all of them. You never know if the next one is going to be as fun and as cool as the one you just sold. I guess I like the journey more than the destination......
a happy bloke playing with cars .
This is art
I admire OG people
We need more people like this in the world
Funny stuff with the neighbors...😁
This is art what a fantastic guy
this dude is my inspiration
