Starfield Review - Is It As BAD As They Say?

- Starfield is arguably the biggest release to hit gaming in the last 10 years. And because of that, the hype and expectation is through the roof and so the early reviews were mixed. There are scores ranging from 4/10 right through to 10/10. So who is right?
Well fear not my lovelies, because Reggie and the boys have gone deep to give you their thoughts in this spoiler free review.

I'm now hooked on Starfield, but I can't deny it took some painful hours to get there and hopefully the review feels balanced in sharing the good and the bad. Would love to hear your thoughts below, Reggie xxx
Your take seems like a fair assesment to someone who got bethesdanized back in the day with Morrowind, and has learned the hard way over the years to read between the lines of what is announced compared to what is to expect... You certainly strengthened my resolve to give it a year or so of optimizations, expansions and awesome modding before even downloading my pre-order copy on a new rig that I will hopefully have by then :)

Pretty good review. I'm hooked in this game, and I have to say as someone that's put hundreds of hours in Elite Dangerous and No Mans Sky and also Star Citizen Bethesda planetary procedural generation is actually extremely impressive. Biology planets have poles with ice and mountain ranges and valleys, deserts and hills. I'm actually very impressed by this. Had Bethesda been able to implement space travel like ED/NMS/SC this game wouldve been as close to a 10 out of 10 for me as at it gets. That said though I still love it. Love the setting and writing, the many factions I'm very much immersed in it 70 hours in.
It can be a bit overwhelming at first though like you said you are pounded with missions, job opportunities and faction recruitments, all of which lead to interesting mission chains some with very nice rewards.
As someone who's put in enough hours in Elite Dangerous to become Triple Elite and top ranks on Community Goals many times over, I can appreciate the insight from your very specific point of view.
as someone who has played elite, no mans sky and a bit SC the procedural generation is completely dog shit... I've been on 40+ planets and the verticality is basically the same. There're no mountains there are only small hills that are looking the same on every fckn planet...
I really like the game. It reminds me of fallout in space but with Morrowind like pacing and no cliff racers haunting you. I think people may eventually get past not having their hands held when they realize they can create their own destiny by doing whatever they want instead. Finding what you like to do in Starfield is such an experience. I'm a bit biased about the space travel, I know it's disappointing for most but as a person with a fear of big open spaces, the fast travel system is a godsend for me. I don't hate no man sky but i'd freakout skipping planets
Starfield is very refined to the point where they focus on actual gameplay instead of gotcha mentality. It's about exploring and getting lost without the unnecessary clutter. A world where every decision define you're experience.
Dude, i spent like 5 hours on my ship building so i can have the coolest looking load screens! Ive got about 150 hours played. So thats 140 hours doing shit and 10 hours of loading screens. Seriously tho, dont mind the quibbles. I love this game. Coming from thousands of hours in Elite, this compliments it very well. And for me, fast travel on the ground is not even possible due to this being a Bethesda game and thus forcing me to hoard-carry everything that isnt bolted down - and those bolts cant be cut with the cutter. Must take EVERYTHING! So much fun to be had playing the actual intended stuff or just aimlessly wandering about. Love it.
I dont have as many hours in ED but I did put in about 200 hours when the game first came out in EA but also played a ton of NMS and about 100 hours on SC. While I wish Bethesda had similar space travel and planet exploration what they have is actually extremely immersive for me. The loading screens I genuinely dont care. It pops up all my photo mode gallery and they last a couple seconds. Basically what the game is appeals to me a lot than what it isnt. Can you imagine if the space sim aspect was like ED? This would be one of the greatest games of all time, their procedural generation tech is S tier imo. Bethesda have done an amazing job with that. Global illumination is also so freaking good.
I've watched about 30 reviews over the last few days and put about 60 hours into starfield. This review is the best out of all of them and straight down the middle without hating or fanboying. I had to subscribe. Keep up the good work
Sorry I missed this comment but just wanted to say it was great to read this morning! Really appreciate it mate and thank you for the sub.
Its ok that everything isnt curated. Different games do different things. Starfield is about feeling how big space is. Many space games feel tiny because travelling from planet to planet even in a system is too damn fast. I do agree on the black screen though.
But people are wrong about the planets just being skyboxes. They move in orbits and rotate depending on the time as well.
Appreciate being fairer than most. But a lot of the criticisms on a lot of channels is simply wrong.
Very fair comments all round there mate. It’s interesting the fast travel thing. It’s a necessary evil in a game of this scale… it’s utterly huge. Imagine if they didn’t have it… people would also be in outrage. I think fundamentally for me it’s the implementation of it. Making it a bit slicker, a bit more seamless, a bit more intuitive and it wouldn’t have even been a big deal for people.
What’s weird to me about space games is how big and unrealistic people’s exception is every time. This game is way more than elderscroll and fallout was at launch.
Which doesn't really say much lol
This game is amazing. I went in with no expectations and no hype.
I found it to be a fascinating world - a huge world - full of interesting people, great sidequests, surprising random encounters, and some genuinely shoking moment.
The opening was fine.
And the abundance of quests gives you freedom to do what takes your fancy. There's no urgency. Want to join the cops? Go for it. Want to be a pirate? Go for it. Want to do the exploration story? Go for it.
And the fast travel is totally optional. You can be sure that players would complain if visiting a new planet took hours for realism. I would however recommend that players take off and land before heading to new stars. Because the random encounters in orbit are something you will love. Lonely hauler singing ballads over the radio. Shuttle full of school kids chatting over the radio. So good.
"What this game strives to be"
Nah. What it strives to be is what it is. But you've found what really works about it
The first few hours of the game kinda were boring, just like most bethesda games but as soon as you get to atlantis and DO THE UC VANGUARD questline straight away imo its so good and teachs you alot of things im hooked. The intro to the terrormorphs on that first planet was so good. Landed there when it was raining at night time and it was just eery there. love it.
Exactly how I feel. And that whole quest line you mention, without giving any spoilers, is honestly better than main quest lines in so many other games. It’s a slow start Starfield, but then it’s truly brilliant. Thanks for sharing!
Biggest pain for me personally are the constant loading screens breaking immersion. Unacceptable for a 2023 game 😢
The reason there are no vehicles is because you'd hit those invisible walls within 30 seconds of driving. Lack of vehicles actually improves the sense of immersion and exploration imo.
I am 30 hours into Starfield and am enjoying it immensely. This is an amazing game for what it is. 😎
Also, biggest technical disappointment for me: You can't walk around in your ship unless it's landed or docked! So no way of doing anything like sleeping, managing cargo, talking with crew, etc. while in space. I could think of an easy workaround to make this work:
They could have added the option to exit your pilot seat while flying. At that moment a tiny, invisible space station is docked to the ship in an instant, and then you would have the same state as if docked, minus the ship being moving but that's a small downside. On top of that they could have made it so that you could exit into space through the docking port and do a space walk. But seems Bethesda didn't think this far.
So I actually thought this too but believe it or not you can exit your seat whilst in space and speak to crew and look out windows etc. Its just that stupidly the game doesn’t give you the prompt. I believe you hold down B on the controller or hold down E on keyboard. I played for 10 hours before discovering this!
@@cockneygamer Yup, I got this wrong. Actually the game has a bug when changing the default keyboard shortcuts the key for getting up during flight might not work. Gotta have to figure out how to fix this, seems to be the default E key.
@@cockneygamer You can do it by pressing 'E' on the keyboard I discovered it by accident. There is already a mod for the awful inventory system.
But that is what I have always loved about all Bethesda games. the unpredictability of outcomes, and this game has that in spades. Loving this game so far.
Each day it just grows and grows on me. I think an 8/10 score is fair but it feels like a high 8 after even more time with it.
I’m honestly baffled huh the hate this game is getting. I’m trying to work out where it all started from other than that “negative ign” score
@@cockneygamer I have now spent 60h in Starfield and every single extra hour I spend in it I discover more and more tiny details that surprise me ! I think that part of the negativity comes from just how utterly overwhelming this game is especially in the early game , I think that its size scope and ambition might be a blessing and a curse at the same time.
Quality of life (menu and such) issues aside its now been proven that flying between planets is possible and that the entire STAR SYSTEMS are actually one cell with simulated orbits (including things like eclipses) and mods are coming out that allow interplanetary flight for the people that like that sort of thing.
My biggest wish personally is ground vehicles and I suspect this will be an official expansion from BGS.
A review that doesn't hold back on the criticisms but actually makes some good points other reviews have missed. I like your saucy humour but it takes awhile to get used to you referring to yourself in the third person, unless Reggie is someone else lol anyway your videos have been a breath of fresh air
Thank you for the words, appreciate it. It’s a genuinely brilliant game once you get past the first 10 hours or so and is probably my second favourite game of the year after Baldurs Gate.
Edit: also noted on the Reggie comment!
@@cockneygamer For what it's worth; even though it truely is as cringe af when somebody refers to themselves in the 3rd person IRL, I found it very amusing, and even charming, here. 🙃
It's weird to me that people who don't like Bethesda games went into a Bethesda game thinking it would be no man's sky
It's interesting about the fact that many feel the beginning of the game is a bit of a slow mess. Reminds me of the opening sequence of Skyrim, lol. Another GREAT game that just starts off a bit wrong and sluggish!
There are no vehicles because you're not on a spherical planet. You're in a 1km square. If there were vehicles, you'd find the edges of the square much faster. No Man's Sky has its flaws, but at least it has spherical planets that you can drive all the way around. Starfield is not a space exploration game - it's a fetch quest menu program, and it doesn't even try to hide it. And where's the space flight? You can't even seamlessly fly from one planet to another - even apart from the constant loading screens, when you get to a planet, you can't fly down to a landing, exit your cockpit, open the airlock and walk out: instead the game puts you in space above a planet, and then you're suddenly dumped out of your ship on the planet surface - they call this "landing".
Doesn’t mass effect have vehicles?
@@cockneygamer Lots of games have vehicles, and with some games the size of the play area is big enough so that it doesn't matter. My point is that, with Starfield, they seem to have decided not to implement vehicles in this game specifically because they knew the size of their game world (around 1km square per touchdown) would become very obvious if they allowed people to travel around at vehicle speed.
Your review is the fairest I'd say, and the most entertaining. It's just a shame that better decisions were not made in the design stage. I wanted Elite Dangerous with engaging character and a variety of quests. But Starfield is something else. I get that something else can still be good in its own way, but not sure this is for me.
Thank you mate and that’s a smart decision. We have obviously seen both Cyberpunk and NMS drastically improve since it’s launch, so maybe it’s one to pick up in the future and see how it’s going. I already see there are over 500 mods released for starfield so for sure we will see further improvements regardless.
@@cockneygamer Think you've saved me a few quid here. Cheers mate. I'm an East London lad myself. If only we could have landed in Vicky Park and explored a ruined London.
The lack of a local mini map for towns is so lazy and it takes me ages to find stuff in new atlantis due to its size.
Somewhere on this comment section someone said that it was actually on us gamers to get a pencil out and map it on some paper… I kid you not!
And yes I couldn’t agree with you more.
Starfield feels like that one time I had in school. I was to write an essay, didn't bother doing it, but when the time came I started reading the title. My teacher said "Good, you get a 10" and I said "I'd like to stop here."
I find Starfield to be in the kinda alright-pretty good territory. Definitely no higher than an 8, even then that feels generous.
Worth the price of renewing my Game Pass subscription but not worth a whole ass $70 like one would pay for a top of the line, AAA game released this console generation. These days I expect to be offered graphics and performance mode OPTIONS on consoles and will gladly take the necessary fidelity sacrifices to have it run in the neighborhood of 60FPS. The whole "stability" and "our creative vision" and "ambition" feels like a cop out like they didn't want to bother much from a technical standpoint which just shouldn't be allowed to stand considering the time they spent on this and that MS funding.
The whole thing feels like a shinier version of previous generation games which fair enough; I do enjoy some games from previous generations but these days if I'm going to pay $70 for a game I need something that actually feels like a current gen game. So as it stands, playing it as part of game pass it is. Though I could be tempted to actually buy it once it goes on sale and gets to a price that's closer to the budget feel that the moment to moment gameplay feels like on either the Xbox Series S or the ROG Ally. It feels...better on the Ally as I can get all over the place frame rates that still exceed 30FPS but I have to set everything so low that; while it looks okay on the 7.whatever inch screen of the Ally it looks like mashed potatoes if I connect it to a big screen TV.😂😂
Very well said mate and a more than fair way to take the game.
As a guy with WELL over 10k hours into Skyrim & thousands into Oblivion and Morrowind. As much as people touted this is Skyrim in space, I had a weird feeling I would be disappointed, least it wouldn't be Skyrim. Sure enough, I was. Well I will say it much more Fallout 4 then Skyrim or Oblivion "unless you count the horrid oblivion zoom in they brought back, the super strict oblivion guards/cops" and spoilers... the kinda honestly half-baked "starborn" magic. It just didn't really feel like Skyrim or Fallout 4. Like the DNA is there, but all of the action is broken apart, stuck behind 20 load screens & just doesn't feel as hand-crafted as exploring Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim and Fallout... but more like the bad pre-gen of early Daggerfall & the issues I had with Oblivion all brought into a Space-Shooter. Just wasn't my cup of tea.
Well said mate. I’ve really enjoyed my time with Starfield but no way can I deny its issues, and you sum them up well. I haven’t gone back to Starfield like I have other Bethesda games.
@cockneygamer I did get through and even enjoyed it a bit, I just don't think it will hold a candle to their previous games even when full mods do come out. It just had a lot of moments that just slogged on in a lot of parts. It also makes your player a bit too much "the good guy" no matter what you do, every follower will leave you or complain for just stealing an apple off a table. It feels a bit even on rails.
“It feels on rails” is spot on and actually quite a damming comment when you consider this is an open world space extravaganza
@cockneygamer I really don't know, but it really makes me feel sometimes like I am playing like a super spread out Jedi - Fallen Order to the the point I am saying to myself, why am I not just playing that again. Edit: Not enough really compels you either to explore other planets, like I went to earth and found absolutely nothing. No Easter eggs, no cool areas, nothing but minerals and rocks. Like I guess that is realistic, but it's not fun..
I would give it maybe 6 or 7 out of 10. That means for me, it's not worth my time: Bad storytelling, bad dialogues, no interesting characters, bland compagnons (much worse than in Fallout 4), boring starship fights, bad animations, plants look awful. There is a waterfall promenade in New Atlantis. One would think such a place should look beautiful, but with the bad and flat textures of the plants and the awful water it looks more like kind of a toxic waste dump. The fights are quite decent, especially when you use the boost pack, but they could be better with an improved AI.
My expectations were high, but the promises were es well. I actually even bought a Xbox because of the Bethesda deal, because I loved the TES games and Fallout 3 and 4. And now I got this soulless and uninspired piece of crap.
At least Phantom of Liberts comes out in a few weeks and I can go on with Cyberpunk, which is a much better game.
So maybe I could explain why I hate this game, although it's not a 0 or even 4 of ten. But it's not a system seller and I don't have a clue what the 220.000.000 budget was spent for. Probably fot marketing.
Love this comment. Simply because you have every right mate to say how you feel. This review is just there to give an honest view on how I see it, but it does not make it more right in any situation. You come up with more than valid points here and I totally respect that.
Starfield has many many many warts. I feel like you’ll either love it, hate it or a bit in between. Appreciate the comment mate, well thought out response.
Hello mate, commented on your video before release and I’m telling you that you’ve hit the reality of starfield without sh**ing all over it. Some absolutely outspoken truths. The game is a big standard Bethesda title with little innovation or risk taken, I’ve had to really discipline myself to not fast travel and sit in load screens every five bloody minutes!! I will say this though… I think they’ve essentially made a modding platform in the knowledge the PC community (Xbox Series X myself) will create it for them, honestly I love the game I’ll admit I’m a Bethesda fanboy for their style of RPG and the ancient creation engine.
One massive point I’ll make is this game feels fresh, a real new IP that feels enticing enough to commit! The “NASA Punk” ship style feels like it has 10” inspirations and yet it’s star fields own ship design unique to them… I said before I’m an elite veteran and I’ll tell you the ship scales didn’t work at all, in starfield the ship creation is so impressive how if all fits together
I’ve had a pint tonight mate and I’m certain your video made my evening, appreciate it
Wow, what a lovely comment and a great write up with your own thoughts. Completely agree with you on modding. This game hopefully only get better and better.
And really appreciate you taking the time to watch the video… I know if you only watch some of it that it either comes across overly negative or overly positive. The Cockney Gamer channel is all about giving as much balance wherever possible so I’m grateful that resonated. Nothing will beat the beer you had though.
Thank you again for taking the time here, really appreciate it!
I’m telling you when it comes to reviews on starfield it’s always one way or the other, I noticed other comments said it but somehow you managed to point out all the evident flaws without writing off the positive aspects of the game!!! It really ain’t a perfect game at all but it is a platform to work too, they’ve worked out that so long as they build that world and lore enough to create a new and fresh environment they’ve basically set out what Microsoft wanted… they’ve taken note of how skilled and committed the modding community is and the cheeky phase 2 is to allow the community to carry and build the franchise by itself at zero cost to them!! Funny thing is it’s Slavs labour but people will do it and unique to Bethesda unlike other developers… Bethesda will actually encourage the modding of the IP at the players risk! Minimum risk to them but maximum productivity… not sure if you played Skyrim but after 10 years after the mods basically made it a next gen game, this originally was not encouraged by Bethesda…
Now look at starfield taking note that it’s been designed from the ground up knowing it would be modded and Todd has said they are all over that mod support…
If 10+ years is how long Skyrim lasted after years of no console mod support, imagine starfield in a few years with full support!! It’s not so much a Bethesda money maker as it is a Microsoft console seller or loyalty guarantor
Sorry mate, just speaking my own opinions and thoughts because you’re review actually incited constructive debate rather then commit to a single viewpoint
Spout those thoughts away, love to hear them. I’ve said many times now that this channel belongs to you lovely folks… not me. I’m just hear to try and make an entertaining review and provide a decent platform for arguments either way.
And yes to the Skyrim comments too… it’s quite unbelievable what that game has become!
Thank you mate, appreciate it. You ever fancy a pint up at Canary Wharf after the work day to chat gaming, just give me a shout. Have a good one..
Space isn't a skybox. Those planets are there, they're just so big and so far away. If our ships could travel much faster than they do then we'd be able to see us flying around planets, to and from, etc... But currently it takes hours in real time to do it. And it would take longer for further targets.
Even though they are just no collision 3D models with textures slapped on top of them. They do move around and rotate and all that.
They for sure move around and follow an orbit, but sadly they are just a 2d cut out where picked stretch as you get closer :-(
@@cockneygamerFrom what I've seen they're 3D. You can fly around them with console commands. But in the end it doesn't matter because you can't fly into them to land anyways. What matters is that it's convincing visually, which from afar it is.
Worst inventory I've ever seen. Stopped playing after three hours and will wait to see what happens in a few months.
Nice lie
Literally what's wrong with the inventory? I see so many people say this but yet can't explain why they think it's bad. Everything else the video pointed out though is absolutely true.
Personally after 20 or so hours my enjoyment level went up. Just needed to get used to it.
LMAO... "Todd is just flinging the good stuff at you". Excellent writing.
Haha… I wasn’t sure if that one went too far. Will probably get a letter from Todd’s lawyers soon enough.
You got a new subscriber mate! Will watch your BG3 review now. @@cockneygamer
Thank you kindly good sir, very much appreciated
If Some "Game" developer gave all the whinny gamers the Space game they dream of. Here's the deal They would need to have the computing power of approx 5 super computers you know those large buildings that help to do the simulations of solar systems, galaxies etc. You would need Terabytes of storage and memory. Let alone what type of graphical computing power you would also need. Game developers have to narrow and focus on what is possible for the average PC and consul. So you're never going to get what you dream of currently because it's impossible.
Personally, I like the large area Starfield has given us. It's given every one a choice. Stick to built areas / solar systems, or be a wanderer looking for the unseen. I accept the technical limitations imposed, and I am impressed with what has been accomplished. Sure, some of the basics like the inventory being ass to use sucks. But you have a game where you can be a pew pew pirate, or a geologist mapping out every planet and moons features. It's the type of sandbox experience I dreamed of having way back in the early 1970s. I am grateful to have the opportunity to experience it, and I am having too much fun it should be illegal.
Complaining about 4k graphics that dip into 40 FPS. Wow. I mean... I know I'm old, but... I remember 10 fps at 320x200.. Perspective people.
When you have the option to spend $1500 on the best GPU dedicated for 4k gaming let alone a whole new PC with top end hardware costing $3,000 to $4,000 then yes…40 fps and lower is unoptimized and unacceptable
"Quest Buck Cake" is not a bad way to sell a game, just saying.
Can't believe Reggie left Nintendo for this
Haha, you can never knock a good man down
@@cockneygamer Lmao, right.
Eels up inside ya, gaining an entrance where they can 😂 love it. Defo the hitcher from mighty boosh. 👌
Opinions Vs Mass effect trilogy?
Man alive… that’s a great question!
Mass effect still takes it for me… but only when I consider it as a trilogy. In individual game terms… I’d say Starfield sits above Mass effect 1 and 3, but just below 2. So it’s in good company!
@@cockneygamer Pissed me off royally when they changed the control system in 2 I think it was. Just asking as I loved that game, along with The Outer worlds and ED. Just asking as I've got a box I built in 2017 and will probably have to spend a few grand just to play this. Cheers for replying and looks like you just cost me a shit load of dosh LOL :)
@thegrumpygamer3081 if you liked Outer Worlds then you’ll love this for sure. It’s nothing like ED sadly but from a lore and space perspective it’s great. Won’t lie, the first part is a bit disappointing but then it gets really good.
@@cockneygamer Completed that plus all the DLC's. Cheers I'll send you the bill, currently running at nearly £4,000 :)
@thegrumpygamer3081 haha… well, even if you don’t like it, you’ll have one hell of a rig for the future!
Any game I have to play or hours before I get into it isn't worth the effort with so many better options out there IMO.
I will say, with Baldurs gate just coming out a few weeks prior, it’s really consumed money and time from people. Controversial as this may sound, maybe delaying Starfield 6 months could have given it a bit of time in the oven to iron out a few of those creases (fixing up the loading screens as an example).
1. For those who have played Starfield, is it better or worse than other Bethesda titles like Fallout 3/4 or Skyrim?
2. Worth buying, wait for sale, don’t buy?
If you got xbox and gamepass I'd definitely give it a try. They got base building, you can form a crew, and the choices you make for your character background effects the game. I made a gangster and put a bounty on myself 😂😂
Personally not as good as Skyrim, but I recently played Fallout 4 and I’m having as much fun in Starfield as I did that. In fact I’d probably out Starfield ahead of it…
I put a lot of hours in fallout 3&4 but honestly they're lower on my list than all the tes games. I think starfield lands between the two series, I like the vibe/lore of the game better than fallout, the gunplay is solid. Definitely has that Skyrim feeling of mystery and depth.
If you like Bethesda games you'll probably enjoy starfield.
12:52 oh man... you got me at "cyber spunk"
You’re in luck my friend, my Cyberspunk review is full of it!
90% of people saying it's bad are PlayStation fan boys, this game is at least a 93 for me amongst the best RPG's and will only get better with mods. my game of the year
Those same PlayStation fanboys must have bought the game and dropped it like a hot potato.. 3 months out, only 10% are left and still playing.
@@hawkzulu5671 that's normal for any single player game but this is a game that people will come back too, it's had over 12million players and DLC due soon
I love this game but it is definitely the epitome of ok to good at everything but a master of none.
Well said and I fully agree here. It's very good all around but it never masters its craft at one aspect. The mods that have already been released mind you do have me excited for the future.
I think the issues with gaming is reviews that say a game is good if you get trhough the bad parts.why would they work to make full games?thanx for bg3
That’s why games as you explain don’t get rated a 10 or 9 score I guess? Just like games that are excellent overall but start slowly probably shouldn’t get a 4 or 5 score.
Really? So, if you have enough patience, the AI gets smart, the game starts to run smooth and optimized, the plot gets interesting, the invisible walls disappears, the loading screens are gone, you can actually travel to and land on planets, and even drive vehicles there. Sorry, but not even all the patience in the world will give you any of this.
I can only review if how is see it.
- yes the missions are interesting… in fact side faction quests are some of the best I’ve played
- optimizations are needed, but nothing that is worse than other big title releases. In fact this has released in a way better state than a game like Cyberpunk
- invisible walls, as explained in the review with the 2000% speed increase are a non issue. I don’t know who games like the way I show it in an RPG. I don’t even game like that in Star Citizen.
- loading screens/travel within solar system I get and agree on.
So really then, starfield is not perfect, but for any one saying it’s terrible/bad probably haven’t actually played it enough. I saw reviews coming out within a few hours of release. I can’t work out how that’s possible.
Thanks. Seen plenty of fanboy-ish videos, but this is the first one I've seen with some reality to it. Lets me know it's not my kind of game. Maybe I'll pick it up in a year or two when it's $20.
Absolutely welcome mate. And yes, I think this game will be miles better come a year or so. The more I play the more I enjoy and no way is it as bad as people say. And no way is it a 10/10 type score either.
Recycled graphics from 2015, optimization non existent, stale combat from FO (without vats), animations from Oblivion, dead empty sterile world, weak main story, uncreative side quests (90% of them), enforced nostalgia, incredibly dull and boring companions and NPCs in general, endless loading screens...
it's not the worst game ever but it's far, faaar away from the best even for 2023.
You said 1000% of what I feel. I have been experiencing so much dissonance when it comes down to this game and this opening sums all my thoughts up. I think things will get better with modding though.
But isnt it kinda sad, that modders allways have to fix bethesda games?
@@SchunGaming The game isn't broken though.
@@troyknights3342 yes it ist. It has way to many flaws sadly. It tries to get to many different games aspects, but made them worse than were they came from and put them into there game.
I didn't imply that I want them to fix it though. Modding always makes my games better that is just more brain power and putting the game into users hands to develop. Modding been around since I played Neverwinter Nights back in the early 2000's and probably before that.@@SchunGaming Getting better doesn't mean its broken.
It's a masterpiece. Though it took me 20 hours to reach that view and I'm on 40 hours now. I've barely scratched the quests.
I’m slowly feeling that way too… I’m having an absolute blast. I can’t give it a 10 score for all its issues, but no way is this game a 4 or 5 out of 10 which I’ve seen a lot of people give.
I like the cockney gamer gimmick but some of the similes were a bit too on-the-nose. Good gaff though, don't feel you have to force it.
Really good feedback mate, love hearing these comments the best. I think many times I have a script good to go and it feels natural in my head, but I do re-record many areas and sometimes that can feel unnatural in the edit. So this is always lovely to hear mate and I take it fully onboard.
The loading screens and stuttering make the simplest task take so long it's torture to complete to me
This is one thing my review doesn’t appreciate. I’m on a pretty good set up so loading screens aren’t tooooo bad, but I understand for others it’s a much longer experience. I’ve no idea what it’s like on Xbox.
@@cockneygamerexhausting.
Thats why I love Elite Dangerous - game is immersive masterpiece
What I find surprising is why they didn’t copy some of the mechanics from Elite. In particular the loading screen when you hop system. To be fair to Starfield, it’s not actually doing anything different here, it’s just Elite does it with more flair to keep you fully immersed.
Top comment. I literally migrated my PS account to PC last night after not playing ED since 2019. Can't wait to hop on this weekend in my Ferdy
I couldnt even complete the tutorial on Elite Dangerous I found the flight control baffling and frustrating.
@@Jezza_One I was like that then I found Hugh Jardon. He walks you through with the initial stuff pretty neatly. Even though the tutorial is for older version but it still is valid and highly suggested - ua-cam.com/video/fl9KwUSowcw/v-deo.html

You diamond geezer ❤
I've found some really good, fun new channels since typing into YT search 'Starfield is shit', and this one is the pick of them! Excellent content, style and info... 'onest guv'nor. 👍
I’m 26 hrs in and I’m bored out of my mind. But glad you guys are enjoying tho !
I think Starfield is definitely going to split people down the middle. I totally get why people might not like it either and why others will love it. Appreciate you sharing!
I’m just going to repeat this for the hundredth time, but a game is legitimately only hurting itself if it’s not fun to play immediately. All of the best games that I’ve ever played were fun to play immediately and stayed fun. Expecting people to put 20+ hours into something that they paid for to start having fun is a ridiculous premise
Very good point. It’s not so much it’s “not fun” but rather overwhelming. Usually in games there is a progression of sorts, where you open it all up and away you go. But here’s it’s almost the opposite. Ship design. Main quests. Factions. Space travel. Combat. Plus trying to navigate the menus, systems, gunplay. So that first 10 hours or so feels laborious until you get into a groove and clear out some of the nonsense. Once you do it’s absolutely superb.
well, the game kinda doesnt tell you what to do and lets you explore it yourself. and i get it. some people do not have the adventurous trait irl to explore what the game can do and is. some people prefer a linear line on what to do and want to be told exactly how to do it. having this much freedom is a double edged sword.
@@cockneygamer still falls to the developer of a game to guide the player to understand the basic fundamentals of the game in order to avoid this issue. I bought armored core over getting this game in the short term, and i've never played an armored core video game in my life, but within the first hour I completely understand the controls, systems, what they mean, and how it interacts with the fights that I participate in. Sure there are more systems in starfield and I'm sure they're more complex, but the burden falls on Bethesda to ensure that they develop an intuitive and well explained way to use those systems instead of "information overload" that many players I'm seeing are experiencing. It's just a part of good game design
god the bukkake quest party got me really bad mate, glorious :D

So..no man's sky with less planets?
The whole Reggie thing is very odd
I think people are feeling what I felt about Oblivion. Morrowind gave me so much freedom to do whatever I wanted, so even though Oblivion came around with better polish and better graphics, I felt restricted. Ever since then I've never had high expectations for Bethesda games. The only "Bethesda" game that managed to surprise me was New Vegas, and that was made by Obsidian.
"Starfield vs. No Man's Sky: A Galactic Fiasco"
When it comes to space exploration games, the bar was set pretty low with the infamous launch of No Man's Sky. However, Starfield somehow manages to plummet even further into the abyss of disappointment. Comparing Starfield to No Man's Sky is like trying to decide which spaceship has more holes in it - they're both disastrous in their own right. Here's how Starfield manages to outdo No Man's Sky in the realm of galactic failure:
Graphics Downgrade: While No Man's Sky was criticized for its initial graphical promises, Starfield manages to pull off a downgrade of epic proportions. The visuals are shockingly outdated, with textures that make No Man's Sky's planets look like a work of art. Even with its rocky start, No Man's Sky eventually improved its graphics, whereas Starfield takes a step backward.
Content Void: No Man's Sky was initially lambasted for its lack of content, but over the years, Hello Games worked tirelessly to add substantial updates and features. In contrast, Starfield launches with an embarrassingly limited amount of content. It feels like an empty void, with little to see, do, or explore. No Man's Sky may have started as a barren landscape, but it evolved; Starfield, on the other hand, feels stagnant.
Glitch-Infested Space: Both games have their share of bugs, but Starfield takes it to a whole new level. It's as if Bethesda saw No Man's Sky's launch issues and decided to double down. From game-breaking crashes to hilarious physics mishaps, Starfield is a veritable smorgasbord of glitches.
Stale Gameplay: No Man's Sky faced criticism for repetitive gameplay, but Starfield somehow manages to make it even more boring. The endless scanning, resource gathering, and menial tasks feel like a punishment rather than gameplay. No Man's Sky may have had a rocky start, but it's since added depth and variety to its gameplay.
Lack of Innovation: No Man's Sky at least attempted to innovate the space exploration genre with its procedurally generated universe and ambitious concepts. Starfield, on the other hand, feels like a carbon copy of old space games with little to distinguish itself from its predecessors.
Microtransactions and DLC: No Man's Sky eventually introduced free updates that significantly improved the game, earning back some goodwill. Starfield, however, opts for the path of microtransactions and paid DLC, further frustrating players who expected a complete experience from the start.
In summary, Starfield's launch is a disheartening reminder of how a game can fail to learn from the mistakes of its predecessors. It manages to underperform in every aspect when compared to the comeback story of No Man's Sky. Bethesda's attempt at entering the space exploration genre feels uninspired, unfinished, and a disservice to gamers who were hoping for something truly stellar. Save your interstellar adventures for No Man's Sky - it's the lesser of two galactic disappointments.
No one said it was bad. Since when did a 7/10 mean bad? Xbox fanboys are like those women who are 7s but want to be treated like 10s. Played on PC and 7/10 is a generous score.
As I said elsewhere, loads of big name UA-camrs have said it’s bad… hence my video title

If they add vehicles that would mean more people would be crashing into those invisible walls more frequently as it would be easier to travel around faster.
Too bad star citizen has 600m but not 1 item ship car has mass to it. And fps is terrible. I know sf has its issues. But sc takes the cake cuz all sc is is looks and time sinks.
There must be at least ten or eleven of us out there who feel the exact same way. I wish SF was multi player - We could make a org called 'The Final Eleven People Who Still Play StarField'.
Yes it’s boring
It’s pretty I’ll give it that. I put in 10 hours and I didn’t have it in me to put in anymore. I won’t torture myself trying to wait it out on this game.
Game is bad as a bethesda game.. It misses what made the other games nice, the only thing that made them apealling.. It was the game's open world maps where there were many things going on...
As said in the video, don't try to look for what it isn't... enjoy what it is - a fuck ton of fun. It's side quests have more depth than the main stories of a lot of other games, lol
@@NemoticonI was thinking that funnily enough in the review that just one of these branching quest lines is bigger and better than the main quest line of many games!
@@cockneygamer Considering the game is built on an old engine, it was never going to be a technical masterpeice. But in terms of what they achieved with it, making the most of a narrative lead format, I think it's amazing. People have forgotten how to enjoy video games these days, too quick look for flaws rather than just letting the game take you on an adventure.
@@Nemoticon too quick to look for flaw, and too easily influenced by others. herd mentality.
@@Nemoticon If was made by a top dev studio like insomniac or a big publisher like Rockstar the people will critised them much more ... but why in Bethesda game the people have to enjoy it when they find it boring ? Becuase is Bethesda ? Do not forget that publicly they promised much more than this . They lied so what did you expect ?
I'll answer this question now to save you the time.
Nope... It is way better than click baiting youtubers would have you believe.
This is pretty hilarious really. It seems as if people are just bad at gaming now, and can't handle stuff like not having a mini map to guide them. "Starfield gets better the more you play"? No, YOU get good enough to finally appreciate Starfield. It's not a game problem, it's a you problem.
Are you honestly saying a game of the scale of Starfield doesn’t need good maps? And that is somehow a reflection on the gamers ability? GTA/RDR are huge sandbox games with both solid maps and a mini map to boot.
Starfield doesn’t need a mini map per se, but the actual maps of cities and towns is nonsense. I can’t see how that can honestly be argued any other way.
@@cockneygamer Yep. Exploration based games are there to be explored. Getting to know the areas and remembering them or mapping out areas isn't hard and is part of the fun. Haven't you played Phantasy Star or TES: Arena?
@falksi3182 so in Starfield, you think the player should memorise all locations in Atlantis city, all the different levels that exist in all the different buildings, all the elevators that exist to get you to places and all the transit system locations? And then do that for all the other cities like Neon and Akila? My man… that would be impossible. It’s an RPG like Fallout/Skyrim or any other sandbox, and a solid map is an absolute must in a game like this in these huge cities.
@@cockneygamer Like I say, mapping them is an option too. Have you ever played TES:Arena or Phantasy Star 1? How do you think we beat those games?
@falksi3182 but you can’t map them? I’m all ok with self discovery and the map slowly designs itself as you walk about. But Starfield never does that? It’s a permanent fog of war.

It's nothing like prey at all can confirm, but not at all in a good way. Prey actually gives you more player freedom than this game in some ways which is just sad as hell honestly.

@SeymourClevage comments like that keep me going, so thank you. A lot of work goes into these videos and a lot of self doubt too, so these comments are the best. Appreciate it mate, that has made my day!

Best of luck to you.
I have to revert my earlier comment that this game will be a blast! It was based on my experience with Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout 4 but eight years have passed since FO4, times have changed (for the worse) and Bethesda has been bought by Microsoft. Accordingly I shouldn't really be surprised that all the NPCs and quests in the game are infested by political correctness and wokeness. Tamed and lamed down so not to take a chance in offending any gentle soul on the diverse planet. I'm 40 hours into the game and I have yet to encounter an NPC that isn't boring or even downright insufferable, and I have yet to discover any quest that isn't utterly boring or irrational. Bethesda has lost their edge of making fun RPGs.
Yeh it is, move on to another game people.
yes, yes it is, infact its worse

Someone didn't watch the entire review. The game is great. People came in looking to hate this game.
I give it a 5 out of 10. This game has very little to do with space. The way the game was hyped up, I expected to be flying your ship and actually landing on planets. The game is very mediocre nothing great, nothing real bad.
I love Starfield...Its so amazing...The best graphics ever running at a locked 120fps with ray tracing...Amazing story and deep immersive space exploration...The multiplayer is fantastic...No loading screens...The greatest game since Redfall...I can't believe how amazing it is...Todd Howard is so honest and an amazing man...I can't believe it only took 7 years to develop...
What games do you kkow has raytracing locked at 120fps?
And I assume Mass Effect/God of War/Last of Us are terrible because they don’t have multiplayer either?
And did Bethesda promise multiplayer then? If so I definitely missed that!
“As bad as they say”?
What regard said it’s bad? Lol
Well Worth a Buy gave it 4/10!
@@cockneygamerpeople came into this game wanting to hate it. Subconsciously or no.
@@bishopcruz I agree with you here. I honestly think the early IGN review seemed to have set the standard for people’s early views without giving it the time. The issue with us UA-camrs is that there is a mad rush to get an early review out for views, and so you don’t have the time to form a proper opinion. Im not saying worth a buy is wrong in their views (I love their channel), but they had a review out on Saturday when the game was out Friday and gave it a 4/10 (he didn’t get review code). Knowing the time it takes to render a video and upload it and what not, I just don’t see how it’s possible, but maybe has a lot of staff so who am I to say. I don’t see how this a 2/10 or an 4/10… I’ve reviewed plenty of games and it doesn’t come close to those scores.
