I can't see Tom Hardy doing this (but I see why you'd say that). I also think 2000 Crowe was better looking. I haven't seen Hardy in a role where he can capture all the nuances of charisma, stoicism, leadership and being a badass that Crowe does effortlessly (and did a lesser version of in other roles). On top of that, I don't think Hardy has been a movie (where you could see his face) that he had a lot of inspiring dialogue ("unleash hell" moments).
Hardy has the physique for it, sure, but I think he's too short; he's only 5'9, whereas Crowe is 6'0. I also can't see Hardy as a commander of the Roman army. He's more of a rogue operator who does shit on his own, as opposed to a leader of men.
I remember the score of this film being almost John Williams level. When Zimmer goes full Wagner when they finally go to Rome I actually had a tear in my eye.
Gladiator was a fine all round performance by Russell Crowe, although I thought that he gave an outstanding acting tour de force as' Lucky Jack ' in Master And Commander The Far Side Of The World.

'Master and Commander, the far side of the world' is one of my favorite movies of all time. It came out at an important period in my life. When I was a teenager my mom abruptly moved my sisters and me to Columbus, Ohio after being raised in NYC. 2003-2004 I was sort of depressed, los contact with most friends and new school and all that. NYC you have the liberty of going out walking everywhere in Columbus I felt imprisoned, couldn't go anywhere without a car. I lived with my uncle who had a "fixed" cable box and PPV was showing Master and Commander and I was blown away. Can't count how many times I watched it. I can go on for hours but back then my favorite section was when Paul Bettany was injured and they finally landed in the Galapagos and discovering those plants and animals. I remember thinking him as Darwin having so much fun and then his integrity as a person leaving the discovered species behind to tell Russell Crowe of the enemy ship on the other side of the island. Teaches honor and humility. One more thing, the ship mates, those kids. So many lessons learned. Another movie of that time I hold dear again, due to that time in my life is "Sideways" with Paul Giamatti. Idk how that cable box didn't burn with me PPVing those two movies lol. PS. I had already seen Gladiator when it came out years prior and we discussed it in class with my global history teacher. All the best, love your podcast.

The "Has anyone ever served in the army?" scene reminded me of roulette scene in The Deerhunter when DeNiro tells Christopher Walken there is a way out of certain death.
He punches a hole behind his shoulder blade and hoped he bleed out enough to defeat him. I never considered there might be poison, but that’s really likely. The real Commodus in history supposedly used to fight gladiators in the arena, but would give them wooden swords. He killed a few, causing the gladiators to plot against him since there was no honor in it. They killed him in a really terrible but deserved way.

Btw when they were saying who their winner of the movie was and Bill, Chris and Jason all said Russell Crowe but Shea said Joaquin Phoenix, then Bill compared to the year Karl Malone, the better comparison imo would have been the year LeBron almost won unanimous MVP but there was one guy who voted for Carmelo

The late Roman Empire was constantly defending it's northern and north eastern borders from these Germanic folk
The battle at the beginning was supposed to be against the Marcomanni, who lived mostly in Bohemia which was part of the Roman geographic concept of Germania -- basically everything north of the Danube between the Rhine and the Vistula. So no, they weren't fighting in the modern state of Germany but they were fighting within a territory the Romans would have known as Germany. And no, they were not the indigenous peoples of Central Europe; Celts inhabited the region beforehand -- it was sort where Celtic culture originated at the end of the Bronze Age -- but were gradually being pushed by Elbe Germanic speakers who were offshoots of the Jastorf Culture to the north along the Baltic around the same time the Romans started pushing from the south and west.

Another great 'that guy' from this movie is Sven ole Thorsen as Tigris of Gaul (the guy who fights Crowe with the tigers) - classic action movie heavy who is buddies with Schwarzenneger and has starred in most of his movies (The guy with the hammer in Conan, the 'steroids make you deaf' guard in running man, etc).
The Commodus and Maximus dynamic works so well I think because people see themselves in both characters. Like we aspire to be like Maximus but if we're honest with ourselves we are often a Commodus. Also Commodus is nuerotic, self-obsessed and even viciously introspective, which seems more relatable to us, even if he hate him, whereas Maximus doesn't even seem like he can ever be bothered to think about himself or own a mirror, he is just always a man on a mission. The idea of Maximus on a therapist's sofa is absurd, and that may be 'toxic' but it's true while it's easy to imagine Commodus paying someone to talk to for an hour a day about his problems.

Never thought the dagger was poisoned. He stabbed Maximus in the back, puncturing his lung. Maximus developed a tension pneumothorax coupled with blood loss and died.
I remember M&C came out right after the wake of the first Pirates movie. I think that's why it's so slept on. People passed over the better film because it was just "another ship movie" after Jack Sparrow hit the scene... Captain, Jack Sparrow.
I think in the current generation, there are a couple of actors who could do it. Tom Hardy, for instance. Matching Crowe's performance is another matter altogether

My most rewatched scene is easily the end battle against Commodus; most emotionally charged for the audience and in spite of losing everything at the hands of this evil, troubled and depraved man Maximus's muscle memory and battle tested mastery of fear allows him to put the terror down. The Insider is Russell Crowe’s greatest acting, followed by L.A. Confidential. Gladiator is Russell’s most entertaining movie though. Benicio deserved the Oscar that year. His performance was outstanding.
Kind of what happened this year with Brad Pitt winning for OUATIH but giving a better performance in Ad Astra. He was far more entertaining in one but more interesting in the other.
Master and Commander had the advantage of pulling from the entire series of books. Which is why it was such a successful adaptation. I don’t think it’s fair to compare the two. Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany are perfect as Jack Aubrey and Dr Maturin, respectively. And it is also an excellent rewatchable. But imho I don’t think that it’s better than Gladiator.
I'm with Concepcion: Master and Commander is a better film Maybe even much better. Gladiator is more Hollywood. They ate that shit up. You guys are missing out on Willem Dafoe in Shadow of the Vampire. My favourite Dafoe performance and he's my vote for Best Supporting Actor that year. Del Toro and Phoenix are terrific too though

Directors versions of other films are mentioned and/or compared to the original...such as Prince of Theives and The Town, but nothing for Gladiator, what gives?!?!
I would have to rewatch Master and Commander. I only saw it once and pretty much slept through the whole thing. I just watched Gladiator for the first time, last night. Loved it! Russell Crowe definitely wins the movie! Best Actor! BTW! Bill, he didn't win for A Beautiful Mind. Denzel Washington won for Training Day. It should've been Russell! I also wouldn't count out Cristian Bale just because he's incredible. Crowe is perfect though.
I don't think Hardy has played a character that was a charismatic leader of men. He seems to play the brooding lone wolf type more.

I remember M&C came out right after the wake of the first Pirates movie. I think that's why it's so slept on. People passed over the better film because it was just "another ship movie" after Jack Sparrow hit the scene... Captain, Jack Sparrow.

My most rewatched scene is easily the end battle against Commodus; most emotionally charged for the audience and in spite of losing everything at the hands of this evil, troubled and depraved man Maximus's muscle memory and battle tested mastery of fear allows him to put the terror down. The Insider is Russell Crowe’s greatest acting, followed by L.A. Confidential. Gladiator is Russell’s most entertaining movie though.

Master and Commander had the advantage of pulling from the entire series of books. Which is why it was such a successful adaptation. I don’t think it’s fair to compare the two. Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany are perfect as Jack Aubrey and Dr Maturin, respectively. And it is also an excellent rewatchable.
But imho I don’t think that it’s better than Gladiator.
I'm with Concepcion: Master and Commander is a better film Maybe even much better. Gladiator is more Hollywood. They ate that shit up. That and Titanic are tow of the easiest locks on Best Picture I have ever seen.

You guys are missing out on Willem Dafoe in Shadow of the Vampire. My favourite Dafoe performance and he's my vote for Best Supporting Actor that year. Del Toro and Phoenix are terrific too though

Directors versions of other films are mentioned and/or compared to the original...such as Prince of Theives and The Town, but nothing for Gladiator, what gives?!?!

I would have to rewatch Master and Commander. I only saw it once and pretty much slept through the whole thing. I just watched Gladiator for the first time, last night. Loved it! Russell Crowe definitely wins the movie! Best Actor! BTW! Bill, he didn't win for A Beautiful Mind. Denzel Washington won for Training Day. It should've been Russell! If he would've won 2 years in a row. Just like Tom Hanks during the early 90's. You didn't like Troy, Bill? I love that movie!

Benicio del Toro earned the Oscar for Traffic. The take that Phoenix should have won is pure Prisoner of the Moment/Hindsight.
I go with hindsight. Phoenix has given some great performances over the years, but this wasn't one of them.
In my eyes he earned it in that scene at the very end.
