Age of Empires II: Age of Kings Campaign - 3.6 Saladin: The Lion and the Demon

- Outraged that the Holy Land is ruled by Saracens, knights from Europe have descended upon the Middle East in a series of Crusades. Now four European kingdoms have sprung up in the desert. The Saracen king, Saladin, rallies his troops in an attempt to drive back the invaders. In response to the European Crusades, the Saracens have organized a Jihad. In response to the European vileness, the once-cultured Saracens have become treacherous. But will it be enough to save their homeland?

Archer of the Eye #2: "Great, what's his name?"
Archer of the Eye #1: "It's the Viper."
Archer of the Eye #2: "Oh no!"
#OhNo!

6 min in and all the heroes are dead
Never change Viper. Never change
You don't even need a spoiler alert for that anymore XD
Can't wait to see what he does with Subotai
maistromann Man I wonder how he beats the first Attila campaign :D
Viper will use Attila to attack Bleda, and in the process, get Attila killed by the boar. #OhNo
in his defense, those "heroes" are basically "glorified arbalesters" and we all know how much arbalesters like to just die :p
RIP Tower of Flies, hero building that died off screen without ever being selected by Viper.
He noticed it at 14:30

it did it's job well

13:55 "lest just ignore the trebs" those were the 2 hero trebs "God's Own Sling" and "Bad Neighbor". 11
Yeah
their names
Genoese war ships sighted!
Genoese war ships sighted!
Genoese war ships sighted!
Genoese war ships sighted!
And yet when Viper finally turned his sights on Cyan, he said he didn't know what they had. I guess the announcer wasn't enthusiastic enough.
pleasantcrump
That should be the new taunt to replace "Enemy Sighted."
pleasantcrump best quote of this episode indeed!
pleasantcrump
Still not as annoying as "Help! Crusaders are attacking out trade routes!"
HELP! GENOVESE WARSHIPS ARE ATTACKING OUR TRADE ROUTES!
"what is this? bad neighbor? 300 hp?"
hahaha the reaction
it is hero unit and actually it isn't in game files counted as siege, it doesn't take bonus dmg from rams, but also it doesn't do bonus dmg to buildings.
i doubt that that is true because i know that hero cavalry gets the same bonus damage as regular cavalry
Check yourself in scenario editor. Unpacked version of bad neighbour and God's sling (both trebuchet heros) doesn't get bonus dmg from siege ram. Packed yes they do. Tested under userpatch but in 1.0c and older it was like that too.
But I said one thing wrong. They are doing siege dmg, normal treb and bad neighbour does exactly the same dmg.
There is also one bug, bad neighbour from chemistry gets +2 attack in stats that actually works (then bad neighbour does 1 more dmg then normal treb).
that is really wierd
"I'm not good at keeping heroes alive so let's just kill them" is not a valid solution to the problem :D
The narration at the last ending slide is sadly too true.
Yes, felt the same.
religion will always brighten and tainted the world

I don't know about that. The Middle East has been a war-torn area for a relatively short amount of time. The crusades ended and there was relative stability in the region for centuries, especially away from the Turkic fronts of battle in Europe and the Berbers in the West. Before the 1900s and after the Crusades (a period of almost 700 years - longer than even America has existed), the "Holy Land" was much safer than it is now.
The first sign of intra-religious conflict in Palestine was in the early 1900s and the first organized fighting was in the 20s between the newly settled Jews and the established Arabs. That's barely a century old. It only erupted after the fall of the Ottoman caliphate, when Europeans took control of the land and since they didn't care how things should be divided or even if they should be divided, they birthed the modern mess we have today.
@@SirSpamaIot
Disagree a bit, first this ignores the series of Ottoman Persian wars that happened there, the wars the Ottomans undertook to conquer what made their empire that big (I mean sure, if you let Turkey and Iran have their way with Arab nations today you'd get the same result eventually but then you'd also criticize the west for not stopping the carnage)
And then there's local rebellions and civil wars in the Ottoman empire, which if you actually take a look at the list of wars in the modern middle east, are what make up most of the "mess" that is associated with the mid east, 90% of the wars here are internal ones aimed at fighting for power, something that isn't unique to 20-21st centuries ME
And as a Syrian, the whole argument of "dumb Euros never knew how to carve up stuff" argument never made sense to me, we Arabs don't have any significant issues relating to how borders were drawn, we in the ME have relatively very good relations with each other and have 0 border disputes, our wars have 0 to do with borders and a LOT to do with corrupt regimes (and no corrupt regimes aren't a result of western intervention, Assad and Gaddafi are corrupt regimes that are super anti-west)
Yes there was the war between Saddam and Iran but again, are we forgetting the countless wars between Iran and Ottomans that were not civil by any definition
Obviously you'll get less external wars if you give all the region to one giant empire, but today this is practically impossible due to nationalism
Do you guys want me to do this mission with the objective being just defending for a wonder win? Let me know, and I can add an alternate attempt.
Yeah why not....i bet my virginity that you'll fail.
It would certainly be interesting if you started building the wonder ASAP and tried defending it from there. The gameplay would be completely different.
Å kun forsvare seg på dette oppdraget er et helvete. Hadde vært gøy å se! :D
would be great its definitely more enjoyable to watch you try to go for the objectives then just kill everyone :-)
Yes please, I'm not complaining since it's another video!
Bonus challenge: the archers of the eyes must survive
*sees video is almost an hour long*
*grabs popcorn*
is just viper killing all . the AI one by one
YahiroYamaha vipers greatest challenge *____ hero must survive *
Viper could keep a 1hp monk alive through 100 paladins and 500 onagers. But he can't keep any heroes alive... #herolivesmatter
He calls that monk a "Hero Monk" and it dies shortly.
Viper are you new to this game? You can use food boats to gather food.
#clearly he is
food boats? haven't heard of those actually

I was so pissed, especially since he hovered over them so many times! But he's clearly new to this game. He can't even make his cavalry archers shoot their arrows!
+TheReacTT lol I'm new!
You're gonna be disappointed, if I remember correctly Genghis just shows up briefly at the start of the campaign and is never seen again!
well there's always subotai for dying.
Well, yeah he does die actually.
delete ur comments and it wouldn't be spoiled lol
Spoiling is overrated. And in this case, it doesn't really matter.
46:46 Very good lumbercamp placement ! Campain's creators would be proud of you ;D 11
Actually taking those guys out instead of building the wonder made this my favourite campaign map. Took me about two hours though!
Hey Ørjan! I really hope you enjoy making these videos as much as we love watching them... This feeling of getting thrown back into these priceless childhood memories is awesome. Thank you Sir!
"He's only buildings rams, the military mastermind that he is..." ... "ohhh nooo, my trebs... the rams..." xD great
You can kill gray at the start by sailing your 4 ships to his town and killing his vills
Maybe you can play this one again but then with building the wonder immediately? Should be an interesting challenge
It is "hardcore" way to play this mission because AI doesn't wait between attacks if you build wonder. They attack you everytime they have army, they don't wait, you basicly have bad neighbours around your walls at 2nd minute of game.
sounds like fun for theviper!
Agreed, I was hoping he'd do that in this episode, so I was a bit disappointed when he started attacking them instead, haha. Challenge #10 maybe? It would be very fun to watch!
@Honudes Gai No, you dumb fuck. Its not "super easy" at all. You played on easy though. Its hard as fuck on the highest difficulty setting, mamelukes or not.
Yeah, during the siege of Acre, Richard's two trebs were actually named 'Bad Neighbour' & "Gods own Sling'.
+Viper
They delete their buildings when killed only if that single unit is assigned to it. If there are more units coming to build, it still stands.
Intro: "England, France, and the Holy Roman Empire - embarked for the holy land with hundreds of thousands of troop"
Viper: 17:57 "Where are all their units coming from?"
IneFISHent! Cringe.
40:59 Point boost to AI when Wonder construction started.
ayup, they get free units i believe. This is why not building the wonder and just razing everything might actually be easier because it means less units for your enemies, less aggressive AI and also, you have an extra 3000 ressources + villagers that are gathering. Also, they don't have walls so even though they are reasonably good at repelling attacks, they will probably lose a lot of buildings in the process so patience should bring victory for you
the micro was incredibly on point this episode!
except for the fishing boat micro

the moment when the first comment says exactly what you think when opening the video :3
HE HAS DELIVERED!
Don't forget Viper: William Wallace has taught you once how to use the "idle villager" button.
Love this series so much :D
39:10 "Guess there's only blue and red left"
Yellow: Am I a joke to you
Viper: Yes, yes you are
yes indeed!
Get ready, Viper. Next scenario is going to be...woof.
The Ghengis Khan missions are easy up until the great wall mission, then it gets difficult.
That moment when you realise you've caught up on the series and can no longer binge and must face the cold reality of life again......... weep.
MrHatsuka1 I do relate
Viper you're amazing! You're the only guy who has the balls to pull off what you did, awesome stuff!
FINALLY!! GL on tournament btw!
That last line of narration is ominous, especially given the contemporary state of the Middle East. Not only that, but this game was released a year before 9/11
2 00 AM here.........work early tomorrow y u do dis biper
Can't believe you just owned the IA so easily... The mission was so hard for me. I won with the wonder, but my city was totaly destroyed, and i only had 2 villagers left.
Well played Viper !
My full respect, this episode of the Saladin campaign is one of the toughest of all campaigns, just a little behind from Joan of Arc part 5. #Kudos
I love that you took the offensive route! So awesome!
58 minute video. This is going to be good!
34:26 OHHHHH WAWAWIWAAA..... you really are triying to NOT say Oh NO right?
i like the sounds he makes all along Kreygasm
Something to note here:all the AI ennemis start with a very low eco low vills, but as soon as you start a wonder they all get a 1500 in all ress tribute,so no the better aproach is beating the ennemi
Here's Genghis Khan! I shall send him scouting... *gets shot dead by a castle*
Finally!!! Now let me go grab my popcorn and enjoy a nice sunday evening :))))))))))) thx vipz
This scenario was in my opinion one of the hardest to beat. That stream of siege and heavy cavalry continuously pouring into your city is a struggle. VIper how-tos make it seem so damn easy.
Finally. Was refreshing all day. ;)
Genghis Khan hero is really strong. You are still gonna kill it before the 10 mins.
*Hero Unit Exists* :
Viper: "I'm going to end this man's whole career"
That was EPIC!
Now it's time for Gengis Khan campaign! You're going to do that, isn't it Biper?
Templars Are preparing to attack...This mission sucks a lot with unstoppable backup enemies
this woulda been much more fun to watch 7 real life players try to take out vipers wonder
Actually "Bad Neighbour" was the nickname given by Richard the Lionheart to a massive trebuchet used in the Siege of Acre :)
The best strategy in this mission is attacking the genoese and teutons straight on, make no wonder but a far castle. With just galleons and a cannon galleon you can take out every potential water threat. Then just go full eco and spam a lot of units.
oh god I am watching the weirdest ad for you viper, this lady is peeling glue off of her hands in a seductive manner. I hope it pays well lol
Thank you, you should try the glue peeling thing!
in my mind i see the guy who's been hoarding on Saladin's house all this time (the story narrator) as the one who shouts the warnings at the viper while Saladin be like.. does this guy never go home? sheeeeesh...
God Damn it I spent like two intense hours defending my wonder on moderate difficulty and you destroyed everyone on hard you're awesome man!
finally! congratz on return of the kings tournament. good job
I'm really glad he decided to go all conquest on this one. A wonder victory would have been too easy, imo!
Superesky yeah conquest is the easy way to do this mission, apart from the almost cheating way to build tge wonder on the island
you can if u farm the gold tile first :-)
i have done it several times so its possible whether you believe it or not xD
Yeah you can build a Wonder on that island. I think I've done it before too. Wonders are the same size as Castles (4x4 tiles) and if you clear some of those straggler trees (and maybe some of the gold too) you can fit a wonder on there.
And hills don't affect where you can place buildings (except TCs). As long as certain tiles are flat, buildings can be placed there.
Yea i don't blame you even if you looked like a newbie for some parts of the single player i don't think these missions really will make you ready for the tournament.
Sorry to disappoint Viper - but you will not be able to play with the Genghis Khan hero unit. :-P
its alright he gets Subotai, a poor mans Genghis khan
Eh. Genghis Khan dies anyway though. In fact he only gets Subotai afterwards, I think.
hah lol that reminds me i think out of all the original campaigns Saladin is the only one that survives.
Did William Wallace die in the story?
Joan of Arc, Genghis Khan and Barbarossa did.
So did El Cid and Montezuma.
Huh, these stories have a lot of main character deaths. Never knew Ensemble Studios could give George RR Martin and HBO a run for their money.
ya i think Old Will survived, not sure why but I thought he died at Falkirk. Heh well thats real life for you, though i reckon hands down Attlia gets the best death and Barbarossa the most avoidable.
32:39 lol
also, you really won't appreciate how much skill there is in this video unless you suffered trying to get through this scenario. It's REALLY tough. I recently tried and couldn't even get through it trying to build a wonder. EDIT:
I beat it. The cheap way to beat it is to send your war galleys towards Jerusalem and have them destroy their town center at the start. Since that's where Jerusalem's AI mainly stores their resources at the beginning, destroying the town center and nearby villagers wrecks them easily. From then on, do what Viper did. Make rams, upgrade them, defend your base, and take out Richard next. I used the Siege Rams to jebait the AI like Viper. Keep a steady flow of rams, knights and mamelukes to take out yellow's paladins. As Richard's castle, longbowmen and siege go down, build up more cavalry archers to get rid Templar's teutonic knights. With that army, you should be able to stay steady and kill every enemy civ. I made one castle outside of the walls, to the north west of the base so that Genoese ships would mostly get taken care of.
Funny thing is that the Genoese didn't resign on my game. They kept playing until their final villager was killed by an arrow from my towers.
I passed this level easily, building 3 gates at each entrance to the north of the city, this prevents them from approaching the wall enough. Then just build Elite Mameluke and eliminate the catapults.
Cant wait for Genghis Khan mission 3: Into China failed that 4 times on hard that sucks so hard xD i really want to see how he is making that in one try haha
*Richard resigned "YAYYYYY!!" XD
hey viper, just fyi the AI won't delete the building if you kill the vil working on it in one hit. They have to take damage and begin to flee in order for them to also delete the building. No idea why they designed it like that.
Also, your cav archers felt clunky because no lag and because thumb ring didn't exist in AoK.
Fun fact- a stone flung from a trebuchet stays in the air for two years! And everyone in the army lives longer than most trees! Oh AOE timescales- never change.
Thx for killing everyone, was important to me!
Came here after watching an AOE2:DE video.
While DE has a lot good going for it, I like how much sharper everything looks here... DE looks blurry.
Same and I feel the original Commentators are much better than the DE
"Got all these elephants I don't want taking up pop space" What? War elephants are about as population efficient as you can get! Sure they're useless in multiplayer, but they're great against AI.
something1random23 why useless

Ok! Finally I've seen this video! Very fun!
Well played man. Respect!
Viper only won due to those 5 Elephants.
Yay!! It's here!!
Fill up the openings to your city with fortified stone walls and upgrade to make bombard cannons and upgraded Pikeman from blacksmith. Pump out those villagers. Hold back the army with canons and Pikeman You’ll be fine
57:22 "I want to see the steal foundries of Damascus and the gardens of the caliph in Baghdad." Yep, those two cities are also on top of my city trip list.
is it just me or he always applies MP strats on these campaign?
he should go for roleplay and prioritize it's goals rather than go full conquest win. this mission will be really hard if he goes for wonder instead of killing them off one by one
He did build the wonder, and I have no doubt that he could have left blue and teal alone at the end and waited for his wonder victory. However, waiting for the wonder would take a while if he has nothing else to do. :)
Game: your mission is to build a wonder and fend off a massive siege for 300 years
Viper: oh so 1v5, just take out the tcs
Game: no you wont be able to beat them theres too many
Viper: I cant hear you over the sound of my enemies screaming
Game: *GENOESE WARSHIPS ARE ATTACKING*
Viper ignores the objective and proceeds to slaughter everyone 😂😂😂
I would sell my soul to see you play AOE - Rise of Rome.
You don't have to defend the wonder if you kill all the enemies first
[insert guy tapping finger on his head meme]
I feel nostalgic, a great game.
Congratz theviper and DauT. Awesome gaming!
imo,i felt like the AI wasn't aggressive as much at the early stage of the game
that's what happened to me too, the AI was so incredibly fast at sending units on water. IDK, but the AI on viper's game was a little too passive.
It's fairly well known that the French at Acre built catapults called God's stone thrower (God's own sling in AoE) and Bad Neighbour. What's perhaps less well known is that medieval accounts also recorded that the Saracens within the walls constructed their own trebuchet called Bad Relation.
0:20 I don't get why you dont spend some of that 2k stone on castles. They dont take up pop limit and wouldve massacred that enemy unit spam while your mamelukes handled the siege, and given you a strong position to siege them from
This series has been a great fun to watch so far. For this scenario, however, I need to confess that I'm a bit dissapointed. I was hoping that you followed the scenario instructions: build a wonder and defend it. Seeing you destroy the AI players one by one was ok to watch, but it'd have been much more fun to see you defend the 1vs5, wall like crazy and make Tim proud.
well im a complete noob and I tried to raid the enemies, and my base got harrassed pretty badly. The only way i could win was just building the wonder and defending the base. I think its easier that way
I disagree, seeing the fuckers resign one by one was even better to watch than just defending against them.
Strat on medium that worked for me (without wonder):
Close all 3 entries to the city by gates - enemies now need to walk/ride from the coast side west. Place 2-3 bombard canons inside the city, so they can attack the small path on the mentioned westcoast
Then I basically took out gray within the first 5 minutes with my starting force and 2 trebs. If you destroy their TC and kill all their vills, they will delete everything and resign.
After that, the hard part begin: Defeat RED (Richard Lionheart) by constantly attack him with Mameluks&bombard canons. Destroy TC and his castles.
Important keep blue and cyan busy by attacking them with 2-3 mameluks constantly, so they wont send every troups to help Red defending your attack.
As soon RED is defeated, the game is basically over, once they started getting desperate, their attacks dried up and it was easy to pick them off one by one.
Overall, it was a quiet ending to the game but extremely satisfying to win.
why is jerusalem his enemy? isnt it supposed to be in saladin's hand?
daan waan ¯\_ツ_/¯
Think they mean the leftovers of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, a crusader kingdom.
It is there to make the map more difficult. In real life the were no Jerusalem army left they were all destroied in the attle of hitten horn (campaign 3). It was only the English that actually arrived in the holy lands and the city of Acre fell in real life. Saladin didn't defeat Richard but was forced to withdrew from Jerusalem. The English didn't know that they could just take Jerusalem and price John threated to take the trone back in England so Richard made the peace deal with Saladin as mention in the senario without taking Jerusalem. To credit Saladin for this peace treaty is a bit unfair but i also feel this campaign is a bit biased.
+Mikkel Sieburg It is very much biased. It never shows the bad side of scarcens!!!
Yeah, I think that is because it's written from the Frankish PoW point of view, who clearly likes the Saracens and they behave to him nicely, to show their hospitality. But sometimes he mentions, that crusades changed their usually calm nature in more radical and zealous way
There's an exploit unfortunately in this mission. The AI wont target walls if the AI isnt able to see anything past the wall. My guess is that they are set on an attack move towards the object and realize an obstacle and then attack the obstacle. All i did was resource up, delete all building except the walls and wonders, sit and wait while having a cup of tea
dude you bringed me 12 years back to the past with this campaign !!!
Befor i had internet , and playing aok on Compaq Peintum 2 ,
Spending 1 week to finish an campaign haha !
Damn use to be good time !!!!
The Europeans starts to build a wonder against viper 😂 wrong roles
The creme de la creme. Amazing experience Vper :D
Leave it to Biper to manage go full aggro on the turtle / siege scenario. I played this on hard yesterday, and it was pretty tough trying to do anything but mass mamelukes. When you don't raid the AI early on, their combined forces later contain a ridiculous amount of siege. The Shah's elephant reinforcements were much appreciated, since they gave me a breather to heal up my mameluke pack while the elite ellies held the line. Probably the toughest scenario of the original campaigns, imo.
Do they not really start attacking until the wonder is started? I remember seeing Richard's hero seige weapons 3-5 mins into the game when I played.
Also good job on keeping your hero towers alive Viper!
they always attack in waves, when you start to build the wonder the attacks gets harder. The english will deploy their hero trebuchets asap for example.
