  • It is a war that has lasted for one hundred years, and the French have lost nearly every battle. Soon the English and their allies in Burgundy will conquer all of France. The heir to the French monarchy is too cowardly to ascend to the throne. The French army is wounded and tired and has given up all hope. But in the darkest hour, a young peasant girl declares that she intends to save France.

4:18 "It is a good day for La Hire to die!" -La Hire, hit by a thrown axe close to the walls of a burgundian camp
11:15 "It is here that my tale will end..." -Guy Jesselyne, lost a battle with 3 british cavaliers under his own TC
12:07 "I die with honor!" -Constable Richemont, got outmicro'd by a single longbowman

YOU CAN BUILD A TOWN CENTER IN THIS MISSION?! When I was a little kid playing this I thought it was so hard! I was always losing trying to do it only with the army you get at the start. Eventually I beat it after I was left with only a villager and the cart sneaking from the corner of the map destroying the wall with the villager and dodging all the cannonballs until I got the cart to the hill and still won.

Wow. There actually should be a hardcore version of all the missions. This would work very well for this one.
I must admit though that I always beat the Montezuma "destroy-a-wonder" mission without building anything. I learnt quite some time ago (playing it for like the 10th time) that it was possible but never felt it was needed.
That mission is a lot easier with this approach though.

Joan of Arc correctly predicted the unlikely outcome of the battle of Rouvray, several days in advance. That convinced a local commander who got her an audience with Charles VII. We don't know what happened at that meeting to convince the Dauphain, but it is speculated that since everything else the French had tried had failed, he figured it was worth the risk to give her a chance at breaking the Orleans siege, particularly since she was good at raising the morale of troops. Also, at Orleans she did not officially command the troops, but she carried her own banner and rallied them when their spirits were low.

For those who want to know the historical background: Jeanne d'Arc died more than 20 years before this battle, the battle of Castillon, in 1953. But it concluded the Hundred Years' war with a resounding victory for the French. It was the first battle in Europe where cannons played a crucial role: general Talbot of Shrewsburry wanted to charge at the French camp, but it was guarded by thousands of crossbowmen and 300 cannon, which tore the cavalry apart. The French only had minor casualties, but the British had now lost their entire foothold in France, bar Calais in the north. In 25 years, they went from a dominating position in France to losing it all. And it's a historical fact that that improbable comeback was started by a 16-year old girl. Probably a pretty hot one.

Your last question is pretty pertinent: it's still in debate and there are lot of historical facts and misteries about that:
1: there were prophecies before about a virgin who will save France
2: she's got the determination to believe she was that girl thanks to hearing voices of Saint Michael (the war chief archangel for believers), etc.
3: she was very pious and even as a child went to church sometimes every day which even in that faith days, was not so common and spontaneous (it was already seen as a kind of gift).
4: she success (see first scenario) to cross with a couple of knights through an entirely occupied land (hundreds of km!) in war without even being remarked (i mean, in real history, she would immediatly be puted in jail if they meet any even a small english troop, or worse as you've seen, only because of her pretentions and voices).
5: some legend (as depicted in Luc Besson's film, you should see it, it's the more sceptical version of his life, and it seems even amazing) says that when she came to the Dauphin's court, she recognize him even in a trap where the Dauphin puted his coat and crown on the head of a simple knight and with the all court playing the comedy, to test her and she came to the real dauphin without hesitation and without knowing him, asking directly why he hid from her and didn't want to become king (making a great impression on the entire court).
6: she had a secret private discussion with the Dauphin alone after that, where nobody knows what was said but after that only he decided alone to give the command of the reinforcement for liberating Orléans.
Some think that (because there was rumors about the true descent from his father (no adn test at that time) spread from their competitors for the crown), she gave the confirmation by a proof coming from their voices that he who doubted himself about his own royal descent, to have the sufficient will to take the throne by force to the english or burgundians rival, was the real heir and legitimate future king of France (you got to know that if Burgondy duchy (first a powerful barbarian kingdom before Clovis the first united France) was in war with the future king of France it's because the father of the duke (Jean sans peur (="John the fearless")) plot to take the throne by assassinating a pretender before him (Louis duke of Orléans) and was after that assassinated by the "dauphin" (meaning direct son and heir of the king, without kingdom) Charles in a treacherous meeting, and the Plantagenêts (from Angers, my town, where i was born and live) kings of England got by marriage already all the west of France and pretended to rule the rest and was bound to french heritage by marriage again, Isabelle with Edouard 2 (you see clearly that in "Braveheart" film depicting William Wallace story (you know it? (^_-)), to make peace in fact at the begining, but the rules of transmission of the kingdom crown is different in France and England: in France no woman can rule the country or transmit alone the kingdom, while in Great Britain, you can (so it's a very complex political and family story here, at least like of "Game of throne"or "Dallas" because "truth is stranger than fiction" ("la réalité dépasse la fiction" (and is more interesting, in my opinion because we today are the fruit of the past stories (as I've explained for Rollo the viking for example or French language or architecture in England and more))!)).
7: before that she received confirmation to be virgin by the church and medical examination and have testing questions by clerics which she convinced in that daring way: "You demand me proofs or miracles to give me the confidence, but give me an army and you will see the signs and miracles for what i received this mission from the heaven".
The question remain: proved or not? Ask the English (you have probably seen some delightful bad faith comments under your previous video or elsewhere before, about the "mad" or "witch" Joan, sentence to death by english submited and occupied court to have simply confirmed her voices and mission and worn man clothes, even when she was in prison with no choice of clothes (and the last is true) ! (^_-)
In couple of month she made with the same army as before, absolutely crushed and in a devasted land, more than in hundred years of nobility strong men (a cast of fearless and brutal warriors like Rollo the Normand) battles, leading proud men without any war experience, and making a king crowned who was so hesitant that he never fought himself one battle for himself and betray her in the first occasion (remember Paris reinforcements?) even when she only fought to regain his heritage, his land (like in Compiègne where she fight with few loyal men, even without the king consent (that was a her mistake in fact even if her voices again predicted her fall and death in the year)).
Look how she won at Patay against a way better army (english wikipedia quote ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Patay#The_battle ), showing it is a fact admited even by them):
"Becoming aware of the French approach, Talbot sent a force of archers to ambush them from a patch of woods along the road. This ambush was discovered by scouts when a stag ran into the concealed longbowmen and they let out an excited shout. Talbot attempted to redeploy his men, setting up 500 longbowmen in a location which would block the main road. However, they were attacked before they had a chance to prepare their position by the vanguard of about 1,500 knights under La Hire and Jean Poton de Xaintrailles and swiftly overwhelmed, leading to the exposure of the other English units which were spread out along the road. Fastolf's unit attempted to join up with the English vanguard but the latter fled, forcing Fastolf to follow suit. The rest of the battle was a prolonged mopping-up operation against the fleeing English units, with little organized resistance."
Finally, you got to know that the silver ring she had from her parents (with "Jesus Maria" engraving), the only relic remaining from her (that's why she was burned, to not leave a relic from her, a part of his body to pray for in a French church) is caming back to France last year by buying it to a private english, and the British governement dared after that to demand to France to give it back freely that (for them) "part of English heritage" (you believe that arrogance? The proof that english spirit has'nt changed very much in 6 hundreds years and that there is a deep faith in Joan in the English elite, even today, on the opposite as they claimed always for their own advantage but damage in fact (Castillon was a battle where English army was absolutely and definitively crushed: 4000 loss on english side, 100 for French and Brittany (Conétable de Richemont) side (source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Castillon )!).
They can dream of it, as Philippe de Villiers (who keep it in le "Puy du fou" now) said: "It's too late!"
And then, the same year, you have the Brexit! Strange coincidence isn't it?
I even not mention the lot of miracles as mentioned in aoe2 after.
"Nice story" for sure and not ended and even think: if there was not Joan, no doubt there were even no more france at all and we should all speak English today in France: what a shame (after William conquest especially, this French bastard language corrupted with german barbarian words that hurts me so much in this moment just to try to educate the mass of peasant gamers all over the world!)! (^_-)
    Have a nice day all!

    • @fristi61

Your knowledge on the subject is admirable but there's no need to mix insults towards the English nationality in there.
Sure, there are a few nutjobs who like to claim that Joan of Arc was some kind of pagan or witch or satanist or somesuch nonsense. But that view isn't commonly accepted anywhere, it's just one or two conspiracy theorists. I've certainly never met an Englishman who believes that.
Joan of Arc did not partake in the battle of Patay (as the article you linked and quoted actually pointed out, and the French wikipedia agrees as well). The French vanguard engaged the English as Joan of Arc and the rest of the army was still underway towards the battlefield. This is also why the French soldier count is so low on the article, as it didn't include the rest of the army which had no chance to take part in the battle.
It's a notable victory to be sure, but not one won by Joan of Arc and not one in which she would have been outnumbered if she managed to join the battle with the rest of the army.
The French vanguard was able to win here by attacking the English army as it was still busy forming up. A brilliant surprise attack at a moment when the English were vulnerable. Joan of Arc had nothing to do with it this time, she wasn't there yet.
It's a shame that some English government official somewhere decided to make a big issue out of the French buying Joan's ring back but I don't think most English care at all.
The English haven't been your enemies in 200 years. And the centuries of senseless violence before that is nothing for either party to be proud of, either.
Now, I'm not English or French. I'm simply on the side of history. So I'm just saying it would be best if everyone moved on from this useless hatred.

There is a lot of debate about her involvement with the military, but we know she was present at several battles, likely as a standard-bearer. More importantly, her tactical advice helped immensely in the overall war and her strategy helped in at least a few key battles.

The original game came out in 1999. A top of the line computer was Pentium II 300Mhz with 32mb ram and gaming graphics cards were barely a thing.
Basically your typical pc gaming today is a 100 times faster.
200 pop 4 v 4s were not easiest thing in the world to run., back then.

it helps to have played it many times, I remember my first time holding back building so many forward castles, it probably took forever, last time I played I cleaned up both orange and purple with my starting army and had a few defensive castles to kill the longbowmen, I killed everything and keept most if not all heroes alive and won in 45-50 minutes.

Big strategy for this mission. Instead of invading Burgundy's northern base, go around the trees and attack their southern base. Have your bombard cannons attack their southern town center and place your horse units in the middle area between the northern and southern bases. When Burgundy gets attacked in the south, they'll send their entire northern army south to attack your bomb cannons and for some reason, in both versions of the game, the AI won't adjust and attack any other units except the units that first sparked the battle. So before their units can get south, pick them off with the rest of your army. Then wipe out Burgundy once their army is gone. Makes it easier to then move on to Shrewsburry with your whole force and only have to focus on the British.

Well VIper , here is a ridiculous short version of it of how Joan got so many followers
Basicly France losed almost entire Northern France to the English-Burgundian alliance and for a long time people only heard about French defeats.
Our Joan Of Arc made a prophecy that she would reverse the war into France's favor
Joan petitioned to enter the court and succeeded doing so. She managed to convince the king of France Charles VII (who was probably insane) to send her and an army to lift the siege of Orléaons and she actually did it! (Although the English also had some problems , losing several forts before her arrival) This perpetuate her influence and with further successes the higher-ups were panicking and sold her off to the English. :D

This was the hardest mission I've played so far, but I built my base and obliterated the enemy completely (took a really damn long time though).
I love how you got rid of Shrewsbury right away. That was awesome! I would've taken their resources right away though. I still can't figure out how you build so many units, while the numbers show you have such low economy. It's just baffling xD.

If you send down soldiers to the Burgundy town, they'll just send out all their units, and will barely attack anyone on the way. That was one of my tactics to deal with them.

You can either take out Orange, or Purple, it doesn't matter which, if you don't take out at least one it becomes overwhelming. Burgundy keeps spawning baracks units, Shrewsbury keeps sending cavalier's and capped rams, and the British keep sending Siege Onagers and Longbowmen. There's a second camp of purple on the bottom right of the map. Interesting that you thought to do that on your first try. It took me a few tries before I figured that out. Also, don't destry the enemy markets, you can use them to trade.

The expansion bonuses do not apply in the Age of Kings and Conquerors campaigns. You are playing base AoC even if you're on HD :)

  • @TheIrishEnigma
    @TheIrishEnigma 7 років тому

Not the tidiest start given you're the Viper, but you more than offset it by taking out Orange right off the bat. I think some of that early pressure you commented on was brought on by your Hussars when they tried crossing the shallows, agro'd all those units. One interesting thing, I haven't actually played myself for a while so I have no idea if the HD expansions do take effect or not in the campaigns, but Age of Kings campaigns do receive the bonuses from the Conquerors expansions such as heroes regenerating health, and having the new Imperial Age units like Hussars and Halberdiers .
I think the campaign I'm looking forward to most overall is Ghengis Khan, I think that campaign has the most scenarios where I'm curious to see how you will react.

Your early rush attack on Shrewsbury was a master stroke because they would make the strongest army later: mass siege rams, trebuchets and cavaliers fully upgraded.
On the opposite, to not charge in the begining with hussards and paladins on range burgundian army (archers, canon, axemen and monks, etc.), a fault for me (you would crushed them easily without lot of loss except useless hussards (except 1 or 2 for scouting)).
To let the heroes die so quickly and easely, hum, i find that a little bit embarassing (and you should have remarked that one hero (the first one: Josselyne!) got a paladin look, sorry, i'm not the designer of the game)...
You lost a bit of time in walling and destroy burgundian gate south too (you should have made it first with TC).
And i wont talk about vicious onager's one shot on unique massed arbalets (sorry lol!), cause with carefully controled paladins (instead of losing them in abandoned scouting) and cavalry heroes, it would be easy to remove, but i know you already know it! "Critic is easy and art is difficult!" (french quote) (^_-).
    HO YES! (^_-)
