Gotta say, I really appreciate that you always explain the basics when you do these videos instead of glossing over them. I know some creators start to find it a waste of breath to repeat instructions that come up in almost every build. But as someone not very good at soldering and working with small electronics, I really like getting all the information I need in a single video, instead of having to look up techniques in separate tutorials.
It's neat. Does feel a bit of a "they were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should" since so much of the DS functionality is lost with the mod. :/
great to see the ds modding scene growing this way, I build these ds inside gameboy shells myself too and I have worked with andre a few times already and his work really helped streamlined this for beginners
This is what I've been waiting for. Retrohai is super creative but his methods aren't nearly as technical as they could be. Glad to see this is becoming more accessible.
I don't understand why they didn't just use a GBA chip instead of a DS chip. I mean, a DMG that doesn't even play GB/C games? In favor of playing DS games on a single screen with no ability to switch screens? Why even bother? Why go through a hardware mod that REDUCES functionality?
With emulation being mostly quite good these days, I'm more down for putting a Pi-based board in here rather than using an incomplete part of a whole machine to play GBA games
I think it’s more of a recycling project since it’s common for the top screen to break and fall off but still plays GBA games fine as the video suggests.
This is one of those mods that's more just cool to see it happen rather than actually being good. Removing the touch part of the touch screen is the only part that really sucked here.
@@Aeduo if it's salvage I'm all for it. But I've seen too many people destroy working systems for some project, and then not have the skills to finish it. And then trying again.

Really great work, much cleaner than other mods, and now on my wish list. ♥
So hyped that you built one of these for yourself! I built a DMG104 variant last year (has a GBA SP's top screen attached) and it is still my favorite project to date. I didn't use a kit, but all the parts are still easily found online. I'll have to use that ribbon in the future, cause soldering those cartridge connectors wire-for-wire is a MEGA pain in the tush. Mounting the ports and volume slider without a PCB is annoying, so the fact that it was all on one board is nice. Plus, the xbox style triggers are sick too, I bet they are way comfier than regular buttons on the back i used. Highly recommend the kit Tito got if you want to try this yourself, it feels super rewarding to build one and show it off!
Hey pixel man, do you know if these parts are still available online? The kit on ETSY is showing they only ship to Europe but I’ve always wanted to try this. It’s been my dream for a while to built the 104 style system but with the AV out 3.5mm jack. I already have that set up but getting the DMG form factor is the hard part… let me know if you know where to find them, thanks!
Such a juicy joyous journey we just went on! Love these sorts of builds, and seeing the well deserved shout out to Hai was quite respectable. He’s been making some of the most wild handhelds on the net, and it’s cool someone else has taken it a step further for us lazy folks!
I think I would have liked some shallower shoulder buttons. Having those long triggers makes it harder to stick into a pocket. Nothing a new 3d printed set can't fix!
I was thinking the same thing. It might make sense if they were analog but since they aren't I would've liked to see flat buttons. Something like the frets on the back of the Steam Deck which I never thought I'd use but are actually really handy.
As soon as I saw the title, I was wondering how it was going to select the output screen (knowing how the DS works). After watching, I'd say that is definitely an issue that needs to be solved by the creator. Not sure if both of the DS screens are the same, but if so an easy fix would be to redesign the ribbon cable to take the output of both screen, and provide a button on the lines (in the contrast slot that is empty) that allows you to select which screen output is currently showing. That would resolve issues with DS games and all the emulators.
The Chipquik is a really good tip, that stuff is magic, and I've never seen it used outside industry! As an aside, your soldering and rework skills are excellent, probably the best of any retro modding channel I've seen. I've been soldering for years and have my IPC7711 rework cert, so youtube can be a bit of a horror show sometimes, but I'm glad to see someone showing folks how to do things properly and safely! Soldering is really daunting for beginners, and things go way smoother when you teach them the correct techniques from the beginning. It's bad enough lifting pads on a board that you can replace, it's sometimes catastrophic on one of a kind retro gear.
@ He definitely added an extra screen to some GBA, sure, but he's done a bunch of stuff to GBAs and DMGs alike. I may very well be confusing one of his old Game Boy videos from years ago, though.

for getting emulators on the bottom screen you could use the TV out firmware mod with its screen switching capabilities, you dont need to actually install the av out portion just flash the firmware onto the ds lite and solder a button for switching screens. could even have the button be in place of the contrast slider
Glad as always to find someone else that has lost the fear of soldering. It's really not hard. Next skill to master would be plastic welding which you did a bit of with those brass inserts ;)
There is a way to get the bottom screen to show but it requires flashing the wifi chip. with custom firmware and also adding a switch to toggle to the bottom screen but it is doable! Makho and facelesstech have videos of this mod on there youtube channels :).
That is the whole thing. Reliability/build quality. My Gameboy pocket uses a backlight from handheld legends, but it is powered by a usb cable. instead of tapping into the oem motherboard power rails.
Heatset inserts are great, they make solder iron tips specifically for them I use them quite a bit with my prints, I found the soldering iron tip getting stuck in the heat inserts too often, the tips for the inserts don't have the same problem, cheap enough as well

Man, i love the Modding scene 😂😂😂
what a time to be alive 🥹
The gameboy macro mod has been around for ages. It was mostly done by people who broke their top screen and now only use the bottom screen for gba
Its a bit like people using a Wii to make a portable GameCube
Imagine if the screen slid up, revealing a touch screen, and it was a FULLY functional DS...
Look up the DMG-104. Literally the same thing, but it utilizes an sp clam shell to still have the second screen
It's neat.

:/
It’s a good use of a broken ds
But other than that yea
You must be new here because there's several of these "GBA Macro" style mods using a DS.
And also it can't play GB or GBC games, so it's objectively worse than a normal DMG in that regard lol

Sacrificing backwards gb/gbc compatibility and cannibalizing a ds makes this seem a tad silly
